With the transfer window closing tomorrow, today’s Scribbles are something of a rumour-monger’s delight. Plenty of deals are up in the air, others are apparently imminent. The next day or two is going to be manic as the transfers move at breakneck speed and we’ll do all we can to keep you up to date:

Arsene Wenger’s attempts to restructure his Arsenal defence has kicked into overdrive. Armand Traore is off to QPR, with Brazilian left-back Andre Santos on the verge of a transfer to the Emirates. The 28 year old will offer plenty experience at the back and could be followed by Per Mertesacker– according to L’Equipe France, the centre half is on the verge of a deal and may even be confirmed as a Gunners player by tonight. A move for Chelsea’s Alex has also been mooted.

Bolton’s Stuart Holden will make his return to action this evening as Bolton’s reserves play Fulham. The American has been out since March with a knee injury and his influence has been sorely missed in central midfield by Owen Coyle’s side. Holden will offer plenty steel to a Trotters side that have lost the last two games and face a difficult run of fixtures over the next few Gameweeks.

Man City have failed in a bid to bring Mark Van Bommel to the Etihad Stadium. The Dutchman’s agent Mino Raiola explained just why he is a man in demand:

“The message of AC Milan was clear. Mark van Bommel is not for sale under any circumstances. They have the problem that Yaya Toure will spend considerable time out because of the matches for the African Cup. In addition, they also know that Mark van Bommel is excellent alongside Nigel de Jong. Hence they came in again for him.”

Edin Dzeko has thanked his manager for keeping faith in his abilities. The Bosnian was a shadow of his current self upon arriving in Manchester last season and having adapted to the rigours of the Premier League, is reaping the benefits with six goals in his first three games:

I am happy that he kept faith with me because I think that’s the most important thing in football – that the coach and the players around you believe in you. The beginning was hard for me, but I wanted to have a full pre-season with the team. Now I have had that and I know the league better. I feel much stronger than last season.

Reports indicate Carlos Tevez is expected to start City’s next match at home to Wigan. This could scupper the plans of Fantasy managers looking to bring in the likes of Sergio Aguero for the Latics showdown. The reasoning behind this line of thinking is that Aguero will take part in exhibition matches for Argentina that take place in India and Bangladesh, with the latter game just three days before the Wigan fixture. Tevez, on the other hand, has not been selected for international duty. The Wigan game starts a run of seven matches in three weeks for Roberto Mancini’s side, with the threat of rotation hanging over City’s first-team squad.

Bolton and Blackburn are battling it out for Liverpool’s forgotten front man Daivid N’Zog. Steve Kean is desperate for new recruits after a move for Hoffenheim’s Vedad Ibisevic fell through due to a thigh injury.

Harry Redknapp will battle it out with Roy Hodgson for the signature of Owen Hargreaves. Spurs are looking to increase their central midfield options and are willing to offer the ex-Man United man a short-term deal.

Steve Bruce is targeting Freiburg forward Papiss Demba Cisse as he looks to solve Sunderland’s striking problems. The Black Cats have found the net just once in their first three league games and were knocked out of the Carling Cup 1-0 by Brighton. Cisse was one of the top-scorers in last season’s Bundesliga and would cost around £13m.

Chelsea may turn to Raul Meireles if their attempts to buy Luka Modric are snubbed by Spurs. Meireles is currently out with a collarbone problem but, even when fit, has failed to make the Liverpool starting XI this season, falling out of favour after the summer influx of midfielders, and has made two sub appearances so far.

Stoke are looking to snap up new Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan deal. Andre Villas-Boas is looking for the youngster to gain Premier League experience and with Lukaku likely to play second-fiddle to Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba and Daniel Sturridge this season, a short-term move to the Britannia could be beneficial.

Newcastle are on the verge of signing Inter Milan fill-back Davide Santon. The twenty year old is currently at St James’ Park undergoing a medical as Alan Pardew looks to nail down a replacement for Jose Enrique at left-back. The move certainly limits the potential of Ryan Taylor as a long-term Fantasy option.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

The move's on, unfortunately for Arsenal fans. German coach Joachim Löw has confirmed that he's given Mertesacker a day off from training with the national team to conclude the deal. Mertesacker took Lufthansa flight 3382 from Düsseldorf Airport, departing 11:27 German time, and has now arrived in London.

A kneejerk moves much much quicker than Mertesacker ever has done in his life.

Werder Bremen's defence has been shocking for the last couple of years and Mertesacker's lack of pace (plus injuries, to be fair) has been a major cause of this. If Arsenal play a high defensive line with him in it, then they're asking for trouble.

Is it just me who thinks Dzeko and Nasri will be rested against Wigan?

Bosnia playing two cruch qualifiers against Belarus, Dzeko looks set to play 180 mins.

France playing away from home against Albania and Romania with their qualification by no means secured.

Tevez dropped from the Argentinian squad and has two weeks to get himself match fit and is due his chance to get his season up and running; Balotelli, though in the Italian squad will likewise be a candidate for selection; Johnson/Milner could easily come in for Nasri with the Champs lge getting underway in the week.

Mancini loves to rotate and an easy home game v Wigan, after a tough int. break with the champs lge around th corner is his opportunity to do that. All week noises are coming out of the City camp talking about the importance of squad depth

Each to their own but Torres to Dzeko was/is a perfectly logical move. One is in form, scoring, and most likely to rise, the other's Torres. It would be a much bigger risk to bring in RVP imo.

Just sub the players on and off and it will automatically change your formation for you. However you must have at least 3 defenders on the field, a minimum of 2 midfielders and at least 1 striker

Yeah, he had a good pre-season but, much like Benayoun has been overlooked when the season proper came around. What does a player have to do if scoring and getting man-of-the-match accolades doesn't put him in front of his team-mates. Glad they're both looking to move where they'll be more appreciated, hopefully Mereiles too.

A Flemish cable station is showing a fair bit of live Prem this season and I've had the luxury of watching the big matches in full.

I was overwhelmed by the apparent superiority of the Manchesters, looked at my side, saw no Man C at all and only Nani + J Evans for Man U. Instead I saw Torres, Fletcher, Bardsley, Jagielka all likely to drop. My resistance to multi-transferring fell down in unison with the contents of the Chateauneuf du Pape bottle. Rooney and Young look unstoppable and very unlikely to fail.

8 transfers done already but not hit the big button yet. I shan't bore you with progress so far.

FPL site shows me having lost 0 points, even though I have -6 free transfers. I guess that won't last.

My theory is that the reverse of the Sampson story has happened to Rooney. Now that he's wearing a new heading carpet, he has regained his strength and heading accuracy.

I thought Samson was only strong when he had hair... although long hair. Not quite the reverse.

It tells you when you are making transfers that you'll have -X points dropped. Once the transfers are made, that goes back to zero, it's only showing those transfers you are currently contemplating. Once the GW rolls over, you'll lose your -24 points, don't worry.

      AN ODE TO OWEN HARGREAVES

Owen Hargreaves he trains real hard:
It’s just that – well, his knees are scarred …
Ignore the knees and listen to the hype -

C’mon now, get his agent on Skype!
      The Parker deal is dead,

And Clattermole’s on red -
So let your fingers do the walking,

And get his agent talking …
      Now, Owen’s weekly pay -

Well, what shall we say?
      For every ninety minutes run,

      Thats 50k we’ve done ...
For your juniors with wet ears,

All trembly with their fears …
      Can learn from his experience,

While your gates gain in pounds and pence!
Don’t bore me with manager’s timidity,

Lift your team out of mediocrity …
Remember all the kits you’ll sell,

AND GIVE HIS AGENT A QUICK BELL!!!

do we believe that dzeko's price on fpl should have gone up more than the 0.1 so far. With 195k transfers in already this week and not yet on totalfpl radar for another rise it smacks of another fpl cockup ?

Mark's mentioned this before, but FPL don't give out details of how and when players rise and fall and value. Sites like TotalFPL and FISO try to work it out, but FPL can change the formula for rises, timing of rises etc whenever they feel like it.

IF Adebayor comes in at 8.5 i may get him in later for Rooney, i know, crazy right? but this would be my team if i did:
    Vorm Ruddy
Bosingwa Enrique Woodgate Simpson De Laet
Silva Walcott Young Mata(or Nasri) Dyer
    Adebayor Dzeko Suarez.
Obviously Adebayor may come in at 9-9.5 and screw that, but I like that team, one of Dzeko or Ade can go back to Rooney in January WC if he continues

What do people think about Cahill to Spurs?
I don't really understand the need, I don't rate him as significantly better than Dawson and certainly not Kaboul. Then we have Gallas as back up and Corluka as Mr versatile. I'm not claiming Spurs have the best defence in the world but well neither to Bolton, I just don't get all the hype about Cahill as a defender other than that he's excellent (both offensively and defensively) from set pieces.

Spurs need a central defender - they were ripped apart. Dawson is a good player but needs a commanding defender next to him. Samba would be perfect for them imo.

He wouldn't be a bad signing IMO. Gallas won't be around much longer and I'm not convinced by Kaboul. He is a bit slow but he is a solid defender.

Walcott's been looking good. It'll be just like Arsenal to pull a great performance out right after being hammered like that. Wenger will be looking for lots of goals - and he knows there are two people in his squad who can provide them.
