Arsenal have this afternoon confirmed they have agreed terms with Werder Bremen for the transfer of Per Mertesacker. The deal is rumoured to be in the region of 9 million Euros and is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

The recent 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford was likely the straw that broke the camel’s back and Arsene Wenger has moved to address the abject defensive display from the likes of Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny by bringing the 6 foot 6, 26 year old Werder Bremen captain to the Emirates…

The Statistics

Mertesacker started off his career at local club Hannover, making 74 appearances across three seasons with 7 goals also coming his way. A standout performance at the 2006 World Cup persuaded Werder Bremen to hand over 5 million Euros for his future endeavours.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength as one of the most experienced, yet still reasonably young, members of the national team with over 70 caps to his name thus far.

Five years at Bremen has seen Mertesacker rack up a further 142 appearances and another 12 goals as his height advantage got him on the end of a number of Marko Marin set-pieces.

The Prospects

Following the shell-shock of last weekend Wenger will be looking to shore up the Arsenal back-line, and pronto. Laurent Koscielny was signed for £10m just last summer but will be expected to fall down the pecking order as the German brings some experience and solidarity to the Gunners. For more info check out the twitter timeline of real-life scout Tor-Kristan Karlsen.

With an expected price of around 6.0 to come in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) he’ll be a risky bandwagon for the early wildcarders but if he can get beyond the springy Thomas Vermaelen and get his lofty bean on the end of some corners and free-kicks, he might just be worth his Fantasy crust.

Anyone think there is legs in the Arteta to Arsenal story?

From a fantasy perspective I'd be happy as larry for Baines to get his penalties back!

Not the most ridiculous deal I've heard today. Everton are screwed financially, he would be a cheap replacement for Fabregas. I could see it happening.

He's only actually 1 year older than Gary Cahill, and has 72 more international caps, for a better side.

Cahill is not the sort of defender Arsenal need. They need a partner for Vermaelen and Cahill is too similar.

I like Kosc. Just using him for humourous ends in the context of this email.

Both Arsenal's and Spurs' drubbings this weekend could be put down to a lack of strength in midfield rather than defence.

definitely. young had joy (jenkinson), nani had a bit (traore), park (no midfield trackers) and welbeck (shocking error by djourou. all of course aided by no help from any of the arsenal midfield (includes arshavin and walcott). rooney's hattrick was a charlie adam hatrick so can't really fault koscielny for that

Had to get rid of Rodwell as he fell 0.1 and may fall again because of Barkley.
Sinclair didn't do it for me, so a straight trade for Brunt before he rises (or Sinclair falls), though never don't look very close. Gambled on Walcott's fixtures so did Anderson & Walcott for Nani & Rodwell.

In my opinion it's worth the 4pt hit.

some initial thoughts on Arteta at the rates:

      pros:
      - relatively low price
      - pass hub
      - better (and more consitent) forwards

      cons:
      - probably rvp on pens and freekicks

this might be good, and worth changing someone like Sess or Taraabt for with some cashes

Yeah I thought about it. I'd never be optimistic about a cleansheet though.
Just wanted an alternative to the Given/Vorm that everyone is using.

Thanks. I see the Krul one with the way he's playing at the moment, why Schwarzer though? Not going to be looking to play Vorm all that much really.

Schwarzer rotates better than Given with Vorm.

why schwarzer, because fulham get clean sheets at home, well at least as many as other keepers you can find for 5mil

Not convinced on Fulham yet. Don't think there'll be more cleanies than Villa. Maybe worth a look just for a bit of a differential though.

Schwarzer and Vorm rotate pretty well through the first half of the season. Rotate Home/Away for 15 of the 19 matches. Decent shout and thats what I've gone with.

it's not title winning (highlights how good fabregas was) but if you need 2 good options per position these days:
    szczesny/meh
    sagna/meh---vermaelen/djourou----mertesacker/koscielny---santos/gibbs
    song/frimpong---wilshere/diaby---arteta/ramsey
    walcott/park---van persie/chamakh---gervinho/arshavin
