More bad news for Arsene Wenger as surgery rules Thomas Vermaelen out for two months. A hamstring strain makes Theo Walcott a doubt for England’s game with Wales, while Andrei Arshavin has his say on the Emirates transfers over the summer. Joseph Yobo joins the Everton exodus and heads for old club Fenerbache and Hatim Ben Arfa returns to first-team training for Newcastle. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Only a day after Jack Wilshere was ruled out for a further three months due to an ankle problem, Arsene Wenger has been dealt another bitter injury blow. This morning has brought the news that Thomas Vermaelen had surgery on his left Achilles yesterday and will be out of action for two months. Vermaelen was out for virtually all of last season due to a problem with his right Achilles and Wenger will be hoping the same scenario doesn’t apply here. Per Mertersacker’s presence at the heart of the Gunners back-four will be even more significant in light of this news.

There’s more injury worry for the Arsenal boss- reports indicate Theo Walcott is struggling with a hamstring strain. The winger may be forced out of England’s midweek match with Wales and Fantasy managers will have concerns over this one- he’s looked in great form of late and has Swansea at home this weekend.

Andrei Arshavin has been having his say on the Gunners summer of player exits. The Russian is quoted to have described the loss of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasr as “a catastrophe” and is of the opinion that Arsenal’s style of play is bound to change as a result:

” We have no-one so comfortable with passing the ball to Robin van Persie or who ideally utilises the qualities of the other forwards. With Arteta or whoever replaces those who have left, we will play different football, not as we played with Cesc and Samir.

Arteta and Benayoun have long proved themselves in the Premier League, they’re not bad signings. And we needed strengthening in those positions. Perhaps another holding midfielder wouldn’t hurt and, as far as I know, we were trying till the last minute to get M’Vila, but unfortunately we weren’t able to buy him.

Judging by the quantity and quality of our signings, Arsenal’s football will soon undergo some changes.

Micah Richards has given Roberto Mancini an injury boost ahead of this weekend’s home game with Wigan. The right-back limped out of the England squad with a hamstring twinge but has already started light training back with Man City and reckons he’ll be fit for the match against the Latics:

I felt a bit of tightness in the hamstring and it is not something I want to take any chances with. I missed some games last season with a similar problem and thought it best to be as cautious as possible. I have had the injury looked at and I am confident I will be available for the Wigan game at the weekend.

Everton’s Joseph Yobo has joined former club Fenerbache on a season-long loan. The centre half has been a somewhat peripheral figure in recent times for David Moyes’ side and his move is another step in easing the Toffees crippling debts.

The Sunderland future of Asamoah Gyan continues to look uncertain. Galatasaray failed in a loan-deal attempt before the closure of the Turkish transfer window last night and Marseille have claimed he was offered to them last week. The Ghanaian has been linked with Spurs and admitted yesterday:

“It is normal to be excited when a club such as Tottenham is interested, however I have a contract somewhere and I intend to honour that.”

Hatim Ben Arfa has returned to first-team training with Newcastle. Given the Frenchman’s appalling luck with injuries since his move to St James’ Park last season, Newcastle are unwilling to put a date on his likely comeback and will continue to monitor his progress

Reports suggest Wolves are looking to snap up James McFadden. The player is a free agent after his contract at Birmingham ended and Mick McCarthy is rumoured to be eyeing up the Scot as he looks to provide competition for Matt Jarvis and Stephen Hunt out wide.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If Long, Bent and Given look highly doubtful for this gameweek (hoping all 3 will start at the moment), is it worth using a wildcard for even after missing several price rises? (Subs that will come on are are Taylor S, Moses and no keeper, and Brown as I doubt Senderos will play too).

I also have players like Silva, Lampard and Hoolahan that I would like to change eventually as well as the ones I have mentioned.

    My WC team:

    Given (Vorm)
R Taylor, Enrique, Bosingwa, De Laet (Ward)
    Nasri, Young, Arteta (Dyer, Moses)
    Suarez, Dzeko, Rooney

I noticed my lack of chelsea coverage and am thinking of getting in Mata. I’m leaning towards dropping Young as I have Rooney and have made profit on Young, then I could upgrade Moses (Petrov maybe). Most of my rivals have Young so Mata could be a good differential

    Any thoughts?

This might seem like a ridiculous question, but…

Rooney and Gabby. Hernandez is a terrible replacement for rooney, he has the touch of a serial killer, offers no chance of assists, not guaranteed to start and wont score anywhere near the amount of goals rooney will.

I think this is pretty harsh given how good Hernandez was last year, especially linking with Rooney! I would also argue he is assured starts for the foreseeable with Berbatov playing in the Champions League until Welbeck is back.

The new bonus point system will also work favourably for him (ridiculous shots on target to off ratio).

The 2nd one is more of a gamble (Dzeko = rotation risk too), but just like the look of it and the flexibility it gives me further down the road...

He scores 30pts less that rooney, and rooney was piss poor last season, where as this season he has started on absolute fire. I dont really rate hernandez, hes reasonably quick and a good finisher, beyond that hes got the ability of a league 2 player.

So looking to out together my WC team, i guess its not massively different from most but what do you guys think overall.

    Krul, Vorm

    Bosingwa, Mertesacker, Brown, Simpson, Delaet

    Tchoyi, Silva, Mata, Hunt, Dyer

    Rvp, Rooney, Dzeko

I know Mert is a bit of a punt, but arsenal have the best fixtures in the league and the guy has to be a massive threat from set pieces.

Sorry for this dumb question. I've read the rules and have been playing for a few years but haven't had this crop up before.

I have 2 free transfers this week. If I only use 1, do I get 2 free or 1 free next week?

    The rules say:

"If you do not use your free transfer, you are able to make an additional free transfer the following Gameweek. If you do not use this saved free transfer in the following Gameweek, it will be carried over until you do. You can never have more than 1 saved transfer."

I assume this means I'd get 2 next week but I think the wording is slightly unclear - could it be that if you use 1 of your 2 free transfers in a given week the one you use is considered your "saved" free transfer, in which case you'd only get 1 the next week?

I'm sure this is actually simple and people will have been in the position before. Thanks in advance if you can help.

    a.young-Downing-Nasri-jarvis ( m.petrov)

interesting team, very weak defence (which taylor is that btw? if s taylor then its good, if r taylor then he's subject to possible rotation over the next couple of weeks, if swansea's taylor then i have no idea)
petrov have a run of fixtures from hell, u might want to consider that
      the rest looks solid
keep an eye on manu team news, once the twins are back, smalling might lose his spot or at least be subject to rotation and with a defence like that u might get into trouble

I'm no expert (lots of people on here talk the talk, but only a few really walk the walk, always bear this in mind when taking advice) but 'chasing' last weeks points can prove fruitless. This doesn't really apply to Suarez, but Agbon hasn't got a great record & Dzecko is a bit of an unknown & likely to be rotated, though admittedly looking red-hot right now. Guesswork really, definitely not bad shouts, so like I said, might as well go for it! Good luck.

agree with hope that kills below re agbonlahor. He is getting forward and picked more under Mcleish, but Villa's shots on goal record over the last three games is appalling. the only reason Bent profits is because of his accuracy. He only needs two chances for two goals. Agbonlahor is a waste of a vital striker place.

Rooney is the best forward pick. Bonus pts system loves him, he scores, is free from rotation risk, on penalties in one of the most attacking sides in the prem, if not the most attacking side.

RVP is a great shout as well as is Suarez.

Dzeko is a rotation risk when fixtures come thick and fast, which they are about to for City. But his second season stats at his previous stats are amazing.

If I were you I'd do

Rooney - Suarez (one of Dzeko/Klasnic/RVP)

He has a fall out with Craig Levin. Craig refuse to put him on against the Czechs in the away leg opting for Boyd instead and it didnt pay off, there was then a few texts sent between fletcher and Scottish management resulting on Fletcher turning his back on Scotland while Levin is in charge.

    Current team:

    Vorm, GK
Jose Enrique, Santos, N Taylor, De Laet, DEF
    Silva, Mata, Cabaye, Ferguson, MID
    Rooney, RVP, Adebayor

Which of the following is stronger as I will play all 3 this week.

    i) Schwarzer, Hutton, Brunt

IMO Ferguson is a trap, you need to make two transfers to get him out...

Rest of the team looks strong but perhaps a little too weak in defence. Santos is vet to be proven and is a risk.

From a fantasy prospective i think he will do well at Villa, he's attacking and cheap, he's just not 100% match fit yet.

I really dont know, I watched the Wolves game and Herd done a reasonable job at RB and could play there this weekend. I would imagine Mcleish would want to field his new signing though, and I have no doubts that his intention is for hutton to be RB for the season (he loved him at Rangers). I would choose hutton if your on your WC but bench him away to everton.

He actually did put in a couple good passes, but overall he doesn't possess the vision to carve open a compact defence, which Arsenal often face. Virtually every pass he makes is sideways or backwards, a very frustrating player. Sincerely hope with Arteta's arrival he won't play much.

You mention he can't defend, he actually does put in quite a lot of good sliding tackles. His purpose in the team is not to defend anyway.

yeah but now playing in the middle and not as an attacking mid or right winger, he needs to chase players back especially on counterattack which he never does. and with a team that has walcott and arshvin and rvp up front, u need the rest with high workload which is why he will never feature alongside arteta.

          No, of course he won't.

But Walcott does actually track back to help Sagna. Rosicky plays at the point of the 3 and has Ramsey and Song or Frimpong to cover him. His priority is to create chances, he doesn't do this enough and doesn't score goals himself. He is effectively an attacking midfield, but not good enough for this level.
