Alan Pardew bemoans his side’s lack of new signings. Andre Villas-Boas admits he’d have no problem dropping Lampard or Torres, while Roberto Mancini mulls over handing Carlo Tevez a start against Wigan. Kenny Dalglish comes to Andy Carroll’s defence and Kevin Davies promises Man United a rough old time ahead of tomorrow’s clash at the Reebok. Here’s today’s Scribbles, folks:

Didier Drogba is looking to return from concussion in time for next week’s showdown with Man United. The Chelsea forward will miss tomorrow’s trip to Sunderland and the midweek Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen but Andre Villas-Boas said yesterday the club would ”push it to the limit” to ensure the Ivorian is ready for the Old Trafford clash.

Villas-Boas also admitted that, if necessary, he will have no qualms about dropping either Frank Lampard or Fernando Torres. The pair were omitted from their respective international line-ups last week and while the Chelsea boss backed his under-fire pair, he admitted:

The moment when it compromises the running of the team, I think it has to come to an end, which is fair enough.

Man City are reported to be not too overly worried regarding Samir Nasri’s broken finger. The winger is still in line for a start against Wigan tomorrow and although the club have yet to comment on the injury, Nasri tweeted yesterday:

I broke my finger during the last international game, I will let you if I will be able to play Saturday.

Reports today suggest Carlos Tevez is in line for a first-team recall. With Sergio Aguero playing in India and Bangladesh the past week while Tevez stayed at home in Manchester, Roberto Mancini may give Tevez a chance to start against Wigan. City play Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday and Mancini will want Aguero 100% for that one.

Stuart Holden is edging ever-closer to his Bolton first-team comeback. The midfielder turned out for the reserves on Wednesday and, having also played last week, is clocking up the minutes as he battles back from a knee injury. Owen Coyle is delighted with his progress:

‘It’s great to have him back. I think he has probably been getting a little bit frustrated because he thinks he can click his fingers after being out for six months and get back at the level he was at.It takes time to build up that fitness and your decision-making in a game, but it was great to see him running about with a Bolton Wanderers shirt on, albeit in a reserve game.

Alan Pardew revealed his frustration over his lack of signings in the August transfer window. The Newcastle boss was desperate to add to his options up front but in a statement that is unlikely to go down well with Mike Ashley and co, Pardew said:

“I can only say that, from my point of view, we put the targets in front of the board and then it comes down to financial decisions, and that financial decision didn’t take place.”

Kenny Dalglish defended Andy Carroll yesterday, following criticism from Fabio Capello over the striker’s form and fitness. The Liverpool boss spoke ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Stoke:

I think it is unfair to discuss Andy. Everyone wants to talk about it but we have said what we have had to say. What we have said is very pertinent and very honest. We know the truth. We do not have any problem whatsoever with Andy. We are delighted to have him here and he will be a fantastic asset for us.

Kevin Davies has promised Man United they are in for a battle tomorrow evening as the Trotters play host to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The forward spoke of his imminent tussle with United new boy Phil Jones and alluded that Bolton intend to target David de Gea’s shaky start to the season, saying:

United at home is one we all look forward to and we fancy our chances against anyone here. I faced Phil Jones at Blackburn last year and he’s a big, strong boy, so I’ll be looking to give him a going over…I’m sure there’ll be a few crosses going in.

Right, im goin to knock all this Dzeko talk on the head.

Dzeko and Tevez will both start.

    Tevez will play 90mins

Dzeko will play at least 60 and be replaced by Aguerro or Balotelli

In summary its worth keeping Dzeko but the big points are with Tevez this weekend.

I've had Rooney since week 2, but with Hernandez back I don't think he offers value.

I too am torn between Nani and Young, I always thought Nani would do better over the season. I'm just mindful of Valencia coming back at some point. Maybe Young as less of a rotation risk and on better form.

Disagree. Welebeck and Rooney could interchange as both are capable of playing as a striker or a second striker. Hernandez is an out and out striker.

I get what you're saying but there's deep and there's deep. He's still very attacking. When there is a top player available that is in good form it's mostly a good idea to get him.

My main problem with Rooney is that I think he passes the ball a bit too often when I wish he'd just whack it in to bring me home the points 8)

'In Like Flynn, these are my planned subs:

    Given (Vorm)
    Kompany Bosingwa Ward (Warnock Simpson)
    Silva Walcott Young Taarabt (Dyer)
    Rooney Dzeko Best

    Bank .9

Simpson is away to QPR but feel Ward is more likely to get assists. Warnock is away to Everton do don't fancy doubling up on Villa this week.
Dyer is the obvious one in midfield, leaving 3 inform strikers upfront.
I've decided to go with Walcott instead of RVP.
Dzeko is my main doubt as there's still a chance he'll start on the bench, or come off after 55-60 minutes.

Do you think I'm missing anybody?

I think it's a nice team, I like the pick of Taarabt. You have all the key areas covered. Obviously you know Best is a risk but one you are willing to take apparently! QPR are quite boring so I wouldn't expect more than one goal to be honest...defensive.

I have Walcott and Dzeko, I think they'll both play 90 minutes. Nice defence as well. You're all set imo!

I've agonised over that decision. RVP would be the guy I'd want, but I can't see a way to get him without downgrading several players. I'm also thinking of taking the cautious approach to see how the team settles and gels before investing..

Areta > Watson (or other 5.5)

    What do people think?
    A - original team
    B - RVP- Watson

Go with Rooney - I hope everyone goes with him and he draws a blank or gets gametime limited. Havent had him on my team and need to pick up points. Go with Roo.

Yeah out of those 2 has to be Rooney.

Walcott would be if you're playing catch up, much later on in the season.

Can't see Arsenal havin it all their own way, and they've been poor thusfar. I must therefore say Rooney. If I was going to (c) any Arse player, it would have to be VP.

Do you think it was the implants that gave him this confidence. I think if Suarez were to whiten his teeth, he would probably score 50 goals this season.

Either worth a 4 point hit I currently have no Arsenal coverage?

    Moses>Arteta

    Sinclair>Walcott

Not a great believer in taking hits personally but if you were to do either of those I would take the second option. I'm going into this gameweek with no Arsenal coverage as well - makes me feel a little bit sick thinking about it...

    Here's my dilemma:

    Moses & Young
    or
    Anderson & Walcott

    Your opinions would be appreciated

If you have either Young or Anderson, keep them not because I think they will have big weeks, but because you dont want to give away the price rise yet before you get one more rise in. In terms of points this week, I would reckon Anderson and Walcott as Young may have his gametime limited.

Tricky one. I think I'd go for Anderson & Walcott, mainly from a fixtures point of view (I know, I know, form over fixtures this year but old habits die hard!)

Ok, never asked for advice before as I'm prepared to live or (usually) die (purely in a fantasy football sense) by my own decisions but I'm going nuts with my captain choice. Messed up badly last week by choosing Bent over Rooney.

    Main options are:

    Rooney
    Dzeko
    Silva
    Baines

Can anyone come up with a persuasive enough argument for one candidate so I can get some sleep tonight?!

Many thanks in advance for any and all advice.

Rooney, Silva and Dzeko may have gametime limited. Especially Rooney and Dezeko. That Leaves Silva and Baines. Silva should also get gametime limited - I think City may play a more defensive game ala last year, to give their players some rest for CL. Baines on free kicks, pks - now with a solid argentine up front and A speedy Drenthe in front of him. For me, its Baines all the way out of the choices listed.

    Wildcard midfield of
A.Silva, Walcott, Young, Dyer, S.Ferguson or
    B.Silva, Walcott, Meireles, Taarabt, Dyer

Already have Rooney so do i need Young?his price is skyrocketing so if i get rid of him, i wont be able to afford to get him back in
B gives me more balance and leaves me .5 to upgrade one of my 3 4.0 defenders

Damn, just seen Youngs price rise. That's a risky one. Keep with not to many concerns, get rid with a potential heart break.

I know there are a lot of questions going on right now but nevermind, how is my team looking? Used 2 freebies. Should I take a hit for anyone? Or hold now?

    Given (Ruddy)
    Baines Bosingwa S.Taylor(De Laet)(Brown)
    Jarvis Sinclair Walcott Brunt(Sessegnon)
    Rooney(c)Dzeko Bent

No hit need at all FB. Team looks good. If baines is out de laet is decent replacement. as is sess if bent or jarvis are out but i can see them both playing. Looking good.

yeah annoyed I can't play de laet really, but West Brom always scrape a goal, think it'll be 2-1 West Brom with probably only 5 points for Brunt, but more than a measley 1 for De Laet 😛

Fixtures out of the picture, looking at the player and team surrounding them as the only influential factors… Would people rather have VDV or Mata in their lineup?

This may be a hard question as we have seen what VDV can do and Mata has only had 25 minutes EPL game time.

I'm suprised at how many teams have Mata in considering he has not had 90 minutes with Chelsea. Then again, with Malouda not being in favour I guess this bolsters his appeal.

You didn't read the question properly! I'm not considering bringing either in, just trying to weigh up Mata as a player. As i've not seen him play for Chelsea I don't get the hype?

He was massively influential for that short period of time, also he was excellent in the U21's tournament which I saw a lot of. Worth a go I'd say!
