Alan Pardew bemoans his side’s lack of new signings. Andre Villas-Boas admits he’d have no problem dropping Lampard or Torres, while Roberto Mancini mulls over handing Carlo Tevez a start against Wigan. Kenny Dalglish comes to Andy Carroll’s defence and Kevin Davies promises Man United a rough old time ahead of tomorrow’s clash at the Reebok. Here’s today’s Scribbles, folks:

Didier Drogba is looking to return from concussion in time for next week’s showdown with Man United. The Chelsea forward will miss tomorrow’s trip to Sunderland and the midweek Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen but Andre Villas-Boas said yesterday the club would ”push it to the limit” to ensure the Ivorian is ready for the Old Trafford clash.

Villas-Boas also admitted that, if necessary, he will have no qualms about dropping either Frank Lampard or Fernando Torres. The pair were omitted from their respective international line-ups last week and while the Chelsea boss backed his under-fire pair, he admitted:

The moment when it compromises the running of the team, I think it has to come to an end, which is fair enough.

Man City are reported to be not too overly worried regarding Samir Nasri’s broken finger. The winger is still in line for a start against Wigan tomorrow and although the club have yet to comment on the injury, Nasri tweeted yesterday:

I broke my finger during the last international game, I will let you if I will be able to play Saturday.

Reports today suggest Carlos Tevez is in line for a first-team recall. With Sergio Aguero playing in India and Bangladesh the past week while Tevez stayed at home in Manchester, Roberto Mancini may give Tevez a chance to start against Wigan. City play Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday and Mancini will want Aguero 100% for that one.

Stuart Holden is edging ever-closer to his Bolton first-team comeback. The midfielder turned out for the reserves on Wednesday and, having also played last week, is clocking up the minutes as he battles back from a knee injury. Owen Coyle is delighted with his progress:

‘It’s great to have him back. I think he has probably been getting a little bit frustrated because he thinks he can click his fingers after being out for six months and get back at the level he was at.It takes time to build up that fitness and your decision-making in a game, but it was great to see him running about with a Bolton Wanderers shirt on, albeit in a reserve game.

Alan Pardew revealed his frustration over his lack of signings in the August transfer window. The Newcastle boss was desperate to add to his options up front but in a statement that is unlikely to go down well with Mike Ashley and co, Pardew said:

“I can only say that, from my point of view, we put the targets in front of the board and then it comes down to financial decisions, and that financial decision didn’t take place.”

Kenny Dalglish defended Andy Carroll yesterday, following criticism from Fabio Capello over the striker’s form and fitness. The Liverpool boss spoke ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Stoke:

I think it is unfair to discuss Andy. Everyone wants to talk about it but we have said what we have had to say. What we have said is very pertinent and very honest. We know the truth. We do not have any problem whatsoever with Andy. We are delighted to have him here and he will be a fantastic asset for us.

Kevin Davies has promised Man United they are in for a battle tomorrow evening as the Trotters play host to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The forward spoke of his imminent tussle with United new boy Phil Jones and alluded that Bolton intend to target David de Gea’s shaky start to the season, saying:

United at home is one we all look forward to and we fancy our chances against anyone here. I faced Phil Jones at Blackburn last year and he’s a big, strong boy, so I’ll be looking to give him a going over…I’m sure there’ll be a few crosses going in.

Well, I have Hilario/Vorm so im stuck with Vorm too probably?

Its not worth 4 points for me to change for sure this week, but I guess losing 4-0 with loads of saves is better than losing 1-0, so not too bothered really?

Downgrade Downing to Moses and use the money to upgrade the defence. It'll still be defensively weak but not quite as bad as it is now... Also Shotton will not play except, possibly, as a sub, still rumours circling that he'll be on his way to Burnley on loan.

WC team almost ready, with the usual suspects (RVP, Rooney, Nasri ) but basically need to decide between stronger defence or stronger midfield - Baines v Mata. Who's more likely to score points? No other Chelsea players currently in squad, except Bos. On other hand Baines would be a season-long keep, and need to buy at some point . . .
    A) Baines
    B) Mata

2nd mid-season WC after Jan transfer window, so no worries there. Plus did so badly in first 3 weeks that multi changes were needed. Maybe I'll get Baines after GW 12, as fixtures easier...?

Next best time for WC could be at next international break (early/mid-Oct?) as everyone will have too much time on their hands, thus go tranfer mad and values will rise. Get it in early. 2nd WC in Jan is only available for a few weeks, so block it in your diary!

Baines (if fit) has two nice fixtures, then awful ones so it may not be worth unbalancing the team for him.

Baines served me well last year, but at a hell of a pricetag. Having him means Brunt or Barton in midfield, which is not too bad, I guess; or a cheapo defender and a promising MF like Mata. Will ask my dog.

I think at the moment Baines is better. I think he will be fit enough, is proven quality and with Arteta gone, taking more set pieces.

Mata is not yet proven and Chelsea has bad fixtures coming up. His goal against Norwich was more of a consequence of other factors (Ruddy's red card, disarrayed Norwich defence and it's error).

Should still keep an eye on Mata and possible grab in after few weeks, if he has proven his quality.

    a) Bent -> RVP(c),
    b) Hilario -> Given, or
    c) Both (for a 4 point hit)

    Hilario, Ruddy
    Bosingwa, Dunne, Simpson, Brown, Senderos
    Silva, Nani, Sessegnon, Sinclair, Moses
    Suarez, Dzeko, Bent
    Bank 2.5m

Just kneejerked massively instead of ensuring a solid first 11. I’m worried about mata, arteta, dzecko gametime, captain choice & Vorm getting pounded. Anyone disagree with this lineup though?

    Vorm (ars)
Collins (eve) Boswingwa (sun) Richards (WIG) Shawcross (LIV)
Mata (sun) Silva (WIG) Arteta (SWA)
Rooney (bol) Holt (WBA) Dzeko (WIG)

subs: Sinclair (ars) Moses (mci) Fabio (bol) Hilario (sun)

    Captain: Dzecko
    Vice: Silva

    Cheers

Ignoring my defenders and GKs who are absolutely pump, and liable to be changed to other absolutely pump defenders before the deadline. Would anyone change anything about this front 8? I think this is where the points are to be made for the next few GWs, so am going very cheap and rotatable at the back.

    Silva - Taraabt - Young - Walcott - Dyer

    RVP - Dzeko - Adebayor

Main concerns are obviously a lack of Rooney/Suarez, Dzekos rotation, and Adebayors fixtures/first few games back in the EPL. What would the experts do? Worth switching Dzeko/Ade to Suarez/Rooney and a cheaper striker?

    A) Dzeko + Walcott

    or

    B) RVP + Cabaye (or other mid for 6.4 or under)

Already got brunt and taarabt in midfield
