[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

A hectic transfer window and the International break has thrown up a whole host of interesting options for this gameweek, and although Edin Dzeko has seemingly cornered the mainstream market with a staggering 390,000 transfers in the FPL game so far this week, there are still plenty of alternative options available if you’re looking for a ‘Differential’. As we gear up for another gameweek then, it’s time to take another look at the stand out options that have been missed by the masses and pick out our three favourites for this week…..

Daniel Sturridge

Juan Mata was the alternative this week and although the Spaniard looks to be on top form and will surely attract substantial investment over the coming weeks, it is Daniel Sturridge  that most catches the eye as a differential. He was outstanding in pre-season and would surely have been involved in Chelsea’s first three games were it not for his suspension, so at just 6.5m he looks great value and his current ownership of 0.9% should soar if he can get on the score sheet this weekend.

The obvious question mark over his starting role may be enough to put some off, but with Drogba definitely out of action against Sunderland, many respectable pundits have been backing a Mata/ Torres/Sturridge front three. Despite his indifference, getting the best from £50 million signing Fernando Torres has to be the number one priority for Andre Villas-Boas if he wants to get on at Chelsea, and Malouda, Kalou and Anelka have all been disappointing in this respect so far. With Villas-Boas and John Terry both commenting recently on how highly rated Sturridge has become at Chelsea, it certainly looks like he will get his chance this weekend, and at such a bargain price he looks like a perfect differential.

Per Mertesacker

Picking an Arsenal defender after their 8 goal mauling at Old Trafford might seem a bit odd, but with Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes to their back four for the weekend’s tie and Swansea still looking for their first goal of the campaign, they will be confident of picking up a clean sheet. The bookies certainly agree with this sentiment too – Paddy Power have them at evens for a clean sheet, the second lowest odds of any side. Their next six fixtures are also the easiest of any side according to our next six ticker, so with such an attractive run of fixtures to come, spending 6.0m on an Arsenal defender might just be one of the most sensible transfers you could make this week.

We covered the key facts and stats about Mertesacker earlier in the week with our Window Watch article, but a few key things have changed since then. Firstly Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out making the big German an almost dead cert to start, and will also by default make him a key target for corners and crosses. With Gibbs and Sagna also returning to fitness, Arsenal should also be a lot more solid at the back than last week adding to his clean sheet potential. Fellow new arrival Andre Santos is definitely one to keep an eye on, but recent reports suggest he is still short of match fitness and so Mertesacker looks like the strongest pick, despite his low ownership of just 1.1%.

Bryan Ruiz

After signing for Fulham in the final hour of the transfer window, Bryan Ruiz will be looking to settle into the Fulham side as quickly as possible and with a home tie against stuttering Blackburn, he has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. There is still a doubt over whether he’ll play the full 90 minutes, but reports suggest he is expected to start as part of a two man attack alongside a fit again Bobby Zamora. A detailed look into his statistics and history is given in another of our window watch articles from last week so further analysis is unnecessary here, but suffice to say, if he can recreate the form that made him such a key player at FC Twente then he looks good for goals, assists and bonus, and should go on to become a great value pick.

Despite coming in at a very affordable 7.0m in the FPL game, just 5000 managers have picked him up since his introduction to the FPL game last week. Although relatively unknown having played much of his career in the Eredivisie, this still seems like a very slow uptake for such a promising player and probably has much to do with Edin Dzeko’s unprecedented popularity – if you don’t buy into the hype however, Ruiz looks an excellent differential and his much lower price should help free up funds to use elsewhere.

That's a toughie - Sessegnon has looked more likley to score but hasn't. N'Zobgia bitterly disappointing and not really getting the same role in which he thrived at Wigan.

I'd give Sessegnon a go marginally.

            Team is:

            Given
            Kompany Enrique Simpson Bosingwa
            Sessegnon Jarvis young
            Dzeko RVP Suarez

            Bench: Vorm/ N'Zogbia W. Brown Moses

Not expecting too much this wk to be honest, although RVP and Dzeko could bring home decent points. Had a poor start to the season but early days! Hows yours coming along?

A: Torres > Holt; Yaya > Nasri; Larsson > Walcott (4 point hit)

B: Torres > RVP; Baines > Ward; Yaya > Nasri (4 point hit).

    C: Torres > Dzeko; Yaya > Walcott (keep Larsson);

D: Torres > RVP; Bent > Dzeko (keep Yaya & Larsson).

Yeah, that's my main concern. I'm considering downgrading one of the premium midfielders, but can't decide which? Logically it should probably be Mata bearing in mind the fixtures but I like him as a differential before everyone gets involved.

I was considering changing Krul to Al-Habsi but him and Vorm rotate awfully.

With Rooney it was a case of him or RVP and I picked RVP purely because of the fixtures.

I think over the course of the season Dzeko will probably get 20+ goals. For that price I think he's an absolute bargain.

Agree with the thing about Moses & Dyer. Not many other options around at that price though unfortunately.

So guys the 4.0 defender market is a mine field.

I have Krul and Vorm as my budget keepers. De Leat is one of my 4.0.

I need one more dirty and cheap defender.

Would Simpson be a mistake or do we trust the newcastle defence?

I may never play this defender but want someone who can come in and do a shift.

Lopez for Wigan? Gabbidon or Hall for QPR?

    Help much appreciated

    Given (Vorm)
Bosingwa, Enrique, De Laet (Brown, Berra)
    Young, Arteta, Henderson, Benayoun (Dyer)
    Rooney, Aguero, Dzeko

2 each from Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool. This season it seems that attacking players from the top clubs are scoring the points, so I've tried to include as many as possible and fill the gaps with low cost regular starters. I know Man City players are rotation risks around the CL but Aguero is someone I really want for the full season and it'd be awkward taking him out, then trying to fit him back in later. Benayoun is a risk but I have a feeling he may see a fair amount of pitch time with Arshavin not exactly firing on all cylinders. He's also a player I liked to watch back when he actually started for Liverpool. At that price it was him or Anderson, and I figured I'd take the risk with Arsenal's fixtures. Just a shame there are more I can't fit in - RvP, Nasri, Silva...

Now I need to convince myself to confirm that and go to bed before I make a daft change.

Highly doubt Benayoun will start for Arsenal this week. The thing with having 8 players tied up in 4 teams is that you can easily score stuff all if those team fail to fire or have tough fixtures (face each other).
Imho Aguero and Benayoun need to go. Even tho i do class Aguero as a quality, quality player, he will struggle for start with Tevez returning and Dzeko in red hot form.
As for Benayoun well Id prefer to get a starter from a mediocre team.

You are betting on the total points scored by a team. For example, with Fulham, you can either buy their total points at 45.5 or sell their total points at 44.5. You choose your stake per point, for example 10 quid, and then at the end of the season you compare your trade with the total points Fulham actually scored. So, say you bought Fulham at 45.5 points, and they scored 50 points for the season, you would make 4.5 points x 10 quid = 45 quid. If you sold them at 44.5, you would lose 5.5 x 10 quid = 55 quid. Make sense?

    Done! Aaah, much better.

    Krul (Vorm)
Kompany, De Laet, Bosingwa (Warnock, Ward)
    Jarvis, Brunt, Young, Nasri (Cabaye)
    Dzeko, Adebayor, RvP

2 defenders who'll play near enough every week then cheaper defenders who can rotate. One of Jarvis and Brunt are guaranteed to have an easy game for a while as Wolves and WBA rotate very well. Cabaye another good option with 2 expensive midfielders. Strong front 3. Finally happy with it.

        Very similar to mine.

        Krul (Vorm)
Kompany Enrique Bosingwa (De Laet, Hall)
        Young Walcott Nasri Obertan (Barkley)
        Dzeko Adebayor RVP

Was adamant I'd have Rooney all week, but decided to drop him today. I think we've made the right choice.

Wasn't happy with the balance when I had 3 big midfielders, had Mata but had to sacrifice him.

I'm not convinced. Don't think he's played well this season, but he could easily bag a couple against Swansea.

How can I fit an Aston Villa goalkeeper or defender into this team?

    Krul, Vorm
Bosingwa, Kompany, Simpson, De Laet, Ward
    Young, Silva, Brunt, Moses, Dyer
    RVP, Rooney, Dzeko

    Cheers.

Downgrade RvP. Or Dzeko>Ruiz. Or Given>Krul (you already have NEW defence covered with Simpson) and replace Bosingwa who has tough-ish fixtures (to Smalling or Enqrique or similar)

      Tricky one though...

    Best Defence Bargains?

I have a bargain backline of

    Vorm
    R Taylor, Ward, De Laet

    With a limited budget of 9.1 for 1 GK & a defender.
Any decent options out there our just bench fillers?

Been out of the loop for a few days and a bit out of it at the mo but is there a reason why dzeko isn't topping the captain poll by a mile at the mo? Am i missing something with RvP or is it just people playing the fixture?

Dzeko may not play the full 90 with Tevez, Balotelli and Aguero all available.

RVP is RVP and Dzeko is Dzeko.

Dzeko does 20+ weeks of F-all, hits 4 in one game, and everyone gets their skirt in a bunch. Good enough - get him and give him the (C).

RVP is miles, and miles, better.

So, yeah, you're missing something with RVP.

    KRUL borm
    bosingwa kompany WARD SIMPSON delatt
    mata walcott silva dyer OBERTAN
    suarez rooney dzeko

im fine with this team except the fact that im doubled new castle defence.
i feel the guys in CAPS can be moved around.. do i have the best combo with them

    a. can downgrade obertan to 4.5 and upgrade simpson to brown
    b. can downgrade obertan to 4.5 and upgrade krul to given (also will bring in ruddy to keep good rotation - im on wc)
    c. can leave the same

also what about ward vs brown?

    please advise guys

Both if you can afford it!
It was the big question pre season, and the Rooney owners won the day...so far.
If you can only have one due to financial constraints, it all comes down to the age old question...form vs fixtures.
      Go with your gut.
      Sorry I've been no help!
