[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

A hectic transfer window and the International break has thrown up a whole host of interesting options for this gameweek, and although Edin Dzeko has seemingly cornered the mainstream market with a staggering 390,000 transfers in the FPL game so far this week, there are still plenty of alternative options available if you’re looking for a ‘Differential’. As we gear up for another gameweek then, it’s time to take another look at the stand out options that have been missed by the masses and pick out our three favourites for this week…..

Daniel Sturridge

Juan Mata was the alternative this week and although the Spaniard looks to be on top form and will surely attract substantial investment over the coming weeks, it is Daniel Sturridge  that most catches the eye as a differential. He was outstanding in pre-season and would surely have been involved in Chelsea’s first three games were it not for his suspension, so at just 6.5m he looks great value and his current ownership of 0.9% should soar if he can get on the score sheet this weekend.

The obvious question mark over his starting role may be enough to put some off, but with Drogba definitely out of action against Sunderland, many respectable pundits have been backing a Mata/ Torres/Sturridge front three. Despite his indifference, getting the best from £50 million signing Fernando Torres has to be the number one priority for Andre Villas-Boas if he wants to get on at Chelsea, and Malouda, Kalou and Anelka have all been disappointing in this respect so far. With Villas-Boas and John Terry both commenting recently on how highly rated Sturridge has become at Chelsea, it certainly looks like he will get his chance this weekend, and at such a bargain price he looks like a perfect differential.

Per Mertesacker

Picking an Arsenal defender after their 8 goal mauling at Old Trafford might seem a bit odd, but with Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes to their back four for the weekend’s tie and Swansea still looking for their first goal of the campaign, they will be confident of picking up a clean sheet. The bookies certainly agree with this sentiment too – Paddy Power have them at evens for a clean sheet, the second lowest odds of any side. Their next six fixtures are also the easiest of any side according to our next six ticker, so with such an attractive run of fixtures to come, spending 6.0m on an Arsenal defender might just be one of the most sensible transfers you could make this week.

We covered the key facts and stats about Mertesacker earlier in the week with our Window Watch article, but a few key things have changed since then. Firstly Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out making the big German an almost dead cert to start, and will also by default make him a key target for corners and crosses. With Gibbs and Sagna also returning to fitness, Arsenal should also be a lot more solid at the back than last week adding to his clean sheet potential. Fellow new arrival Andre Santos is definitely one to keep an eye on, but recent reports suggest he is still short of match fitness and so Mertesacker looks like the strongest pick, despite his low ownership of just 1.1%.

Bryan Ruiz

After signing for Fulham in the final hour of the transfer window, Bryan Ruiz will be looking to settle into the Fulham side as quickly as possible and with a home tie against stuttering Blackburn, he has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. There is still a doubt over whether he’ll play the full 90 minutes, but reports suggest he is expected to start as part of a two man attack alongside a fit again Bobby Zamora. A detailed look into his statistics and history is given in another of our window watch articles from last week so further analysis is unnecessary here, but suffice to say, if he can recreate the form that made him such a key player at FC Twente then he looks good for goals, assists and bonus, and should go on to become a great value pick.

Despite coming in at a very affordable 7.0m in the FPL game, just 5000 managers have picked him up since his introduction to the FPL game last week. Although relatively unknown having played much of his career in the Eredivisie, this still seems like a very slow uptake for such a promising player and probably has much to do with Edin Dzeko’s unprecedented popularity – if you don’t buy into the hype however, Ruiz looks an excellent differential and his much lower price should help free up funds to use elsewhere.

The Czechs are nowhere near as good as they were 10 years ago (I think they were ranked number 2 behind Brazil for a while back then), but they are still a good footballing nation. So for a team like Scotland to get a draw against them is a decent result.

If I were you I'd emigrate to the Czech Republic. Great beer, gorgeous women and a very liberal attitude to almost everything. 🙂

Am I the only person who wants to see David Luiz play as a holding midfielder for Chelsea? The line-up would be:
    Cech
    Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry, A Cole
    Luiz
    Meireles, Lampard
    Sturridge, Torres, Mata

Mikel is a good defensive midfielder but he isn't adventurous and creative enough for my liking.

Ramires' only attribute is his pace. Meireles is more creative and works well with Torres.

Torres has really costed Chelsea a lot, hasn't he? 50m, plus Chelsea have had to buy new players that complement his style of play.

Completely disagree about Ramires. He had a few dodgy games when he first signed but he's been really good for them since and put in a few motm performances.
I don't and have never rated Mikel. I think he's a big slow useless lug that gives away fouls and is poor at reading the game.
If they played Ramires, Meirles and Lampard together they'd have 3 quality box to box players who could alternate between going forward and sitting back, and then they could put someone sitting in front of the back 4 for tighter matches.

Torres? He'll come good again (when he goes back to Athletico)

I dont know why everyone pick Kompany as a 'season keeper'?

Last season he just only could get 95p when Man City had 18 CS. An cheap DF can get more points than him easily.

Even this season Man city have more attacking and their defence looks not good as last season.

It's a strategy, but you have to have faith in the fact that ALL your 5 Manchester players will all score fairly well week in - week out, which isn't going to happen. They will split the points between then on good weeks and then split no points between them on bad weeks.

          High risk and little reward.

I'm going with Ward. Same chance as Simpson for a CS but far more likely to get Baps and even a vague chance of an assist.

You obviously didn't see him play for Ireland... He is not a premier league footballer. He's a donkey.
        Although simpson isn't much better..

I watched both of Ireland's matches.

If you think that he plays under Trap the same way he plays under Mick then all power to your observational skills.

His "crossing" was as bad as my nan's and he was CONSTANTLY caught out for bad positioning?
McGeady saved his ass a few times and he's not even that defensive of a midfielder.

it doesn't matter if he plays with different tactics for wolves, he's still a very poor full back who cant cross for his life.

It does actually matter where he plays and how many passes he receives and who is in the middle for him to cross to.

IF there's someone in the middle for him to cross to then he's OK. He's not Downing or even Larsson class but Ireland hardly had any target men in the area in both games so who was he meant to cross to?

You need a target man you can rely on to be where he should be to cross to him, and Ireland lacked that in spades because they were defending all the time.

Watch the matches again and make up your own mind given his opportunities.

well at wolves he has fletcher and doyle, for ireland he has keane and doyle... not much of a difference imo.
It wasn't even that his crosses always met the opposition's heads, it was that he constantly overhit them so the went out to the opposite fullback or even out for a throw.

I just don't think he'll end up getting as many points as people seem to think, i think brown/woodgate are far better options for that price..

Lateral moves in my opinion, chasing the last GWs points is a bad idea, catching the price rises is overrated in my opinion. I'd have rather have taken a -4 or -8.

But those "lateral moves" will mean that i shouldn't have to make any drastic changes until January as i now have a far more balanced team.

And dont underestimate the value of having a high team value.

Catching price rises early in the season is a good idea.

Your team looks good. Just beware that the masses are very fickle early on in the season so the price rises you've caught could easily evaporate as soon as one of the players who's risen gets rested.

Keep a close eye on them for signs of a sudden price dip.

      My opinion:
      swansea wont score.
      Villa should beat everton
      West brom should beat norwich
apart from that the other predictions could be decent 🙂

I just think some arsenal attacking coverage is essential at the moment and i doubt having silva AND nasri is a good idea..
plus adam wont be involved as much when gerrard comes back.

I'm not a massive Walcott fan, but you should probably not be transeferring out your only Arsenal coverage the week they are at home to Swansea with a following run of good fixtures to come

I like Sturridge for a punt. I think he'll start.
