[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

A hectic transfer window and the International break has thrown up a whole host of interesting options for this gameweek, and although Edin Dzeko has seemingly cornered the mainstream market with a staggering 390,000 transfers in the FPL game so far this week, there are still plenty of alternative options available if you’re looking for a ‘Differential’. As we gear up for another gameweek then, it’s time to take another look at the stand out options that have been missed by the masses and pick out our three favourites for this week…..

Daniel Sturridge

Juan Mata was the alternative this week and although the Spaniard looks to be on top form and will surely attract substantial investment over the coming weeks, it is Daniel Sturridge  that most catches the eye as a differential. He was outstanding in pre-season and would surely have been involved in Chelsea’s first three games were it not for his suspension, so at just 6.5m he looks great value and his current ownership of 0.9% should soar if he can get on the score sheet this weekend.

The obvious question mark over his starting role may be enough to put some off, but with Drogba definitely out of action against Sunderland, many respectable pundits have been backing a Mata/ Torres/Sturridge front three. Despite his indifference, getting the best from £50 million signing Fernando Torres has to be the number one priority for Andre Villas-Boas if he wants to get on at Chelsea, and Malouda, Kalou and Anelka have all been disappointing in this respect so far. With Villas-Boas and John Terry both commenting recently on how highly rated Sturridge has become at Chelsea, it certainly looks like he will get his chance this weekend, and at such a bargain price he looks like a perfect differential.

Per Mertesacker

Picking an Arsenal defender after their 8 goal mauling at Old Trafford might seem a bit odd, but with Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes to their back four for the weekend’s tie and Swansea still looking for their first goal of the campaign, they will be confident of picking up a clean sheet. The bookies certainly agree with this sentiment too – Paddy Power have them at evens for a clean sheet, the second lowest odds of any side. Their next six fixtures are also the easiest of any side according to our next six ticker, so with such an attractive run of fixtures to come, spending 6.0m on an Arsenal defender might just be one of the most sensible transfers you could make this week.

We covered the key facts and stats about Mertesacker earlier in the week with our Window Watch article, but a few key things have changed since then. Firstly Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out making the big German an almost dead cert to start, and will also by default make him a key target for corners and crosses. With Gibbs and Sagna also returning to fitness, Arsenal should also be a lot more solid at the back than last week adding to his clean sheet potential. Fellow new arrival Andre Santos is definitely one to keep an eye on, but recent reports suggest he is still short of match fitness and so Mertesacker looks like the strongest pick, despite his low ownership of just 1.1%.

Bryan Ruiz

After signing for Fulham in the final hour of the transfer window, Bryan Ruiz will be looking to settle into the Fulham side as quickly as possible and with a home tie against stuttering Blackburn, he has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. There is still a doubt over whether he’ll play the full 90 minutes, but reports suggest he is expected to start as part of a two man attack alongside a fit again Bobby Zamora. A detailed look into his statistics and history is given in another of our window watch articles from last week so further analysis is unnecessary here, but suffice to say, if he can recreate the form that made him such a key player at FC Twente then he looks good for goals, assists and bonus, and should go on to become a great value pick.

Despite coming in at a very affordable 7.0m in the FPL game, just 5000 managers have picked him up since his introduction to the FPL game last week. Although relatively unknown having played much of his career in the Eredivisie, this still seems like a very slow uptake for such a promising player and probably has much to do with Edin Dzeko’s unprecedented popularity – if you don’t buy into the hype however, Ruiz looks an excellent differential and his much lower price should help free up funds to use elsewhere.

If you can afford Torres to RVP without the other transfer I would avoid the hit. If not I'd do it anyway as RVP has massive points potential and Torres is Torres.

Hiya lads, cheers for the comments.

Yeah they're all the big hitters in my team, my defence is Bosingwa, Enrique, and simpson (De Laet, Taylor). My team as a whole is:

        Given (Vorm)

Bosingwa - Enrique - Simpson (De Laet, Taylor)

        Mata - Young - Nasri - Mikel (Ferguson - I KNOW lol)

        Rooney - Dzeko - Suarez

I've chose not to go with any arsenal as i've just got a very funny feeling that they aint going to do as well as people think. Above is 2 from united, city, liverpool, and 3 from chelsea, cant be bad 🙂

Think im gonna make rooney my cap as people are suggesting him most, just hope its teh right decision, i originally had it as dzeko but he wont play the full 90 mins if he does start, butthen again he could explode and score like 4 past wigan! oh the dilemma! lol 🙂

    A. mingolet + simpson + 0.5 cash
    B. Krul + brown (no cash)
    C. Krul + simpson (double up on newcastle?) + 0.5 cash

if i choose A or C i can get barkley instead of surman

    other keeper is vorm

    another question

whose most likely to start and play furthest forward for norwich

    surman
    johnson

A - same cover but you also get Barkley/Moses (if you want). Would stay away from Norwich midfielders as they seem to get rotated.

If you're not sure of keeper rotation, go for C instead as Krul/Vorm rotate well.

Having a lot of trouble deciding on my wildcard defence. The team I had in mind was:

    Krul, Vorm
Kompany, Bosingwagon, Enrique, Ward, S Taylor
Silva, Young, O Hara, Anderson, Dyer
    RVP, Suarez, Dzeko

    .1m in bank

I'm considering changing Kompany to De Laet and upgrading Krul and Vorm to Given and Begovic. This will leave me with .5m in bank for a little flexibility in the coming weeks (RVP to Rooney springs to mind). Someone pointed outearlier that Norwich and Wolves rotate very well up to week 16 (each week up to then the home team has a tasty fixture with the exception on one week the opponent being Arsenal) and this would give me De Laet/Ward rotation.

If anything I'd downgrade Enrique to De Laet as Enrique's fixtures dont look like returning many cleanies. That and I think City will be the most reliable source of clean sheets.
Of course this wouldnt give u the cash to get Given and Begovic so mayb just getting one would be an option with a cheapo (4.0 or 4.5) alongside them that rotate well.

It's either both of Given and Begovic or neither for me. I think they are the best GK combo for the season but Krul/Vorm also look good and the 1.5m saving could come in handy.

nearly everyone in my league has brought in dzeko as did i and they will most prob captain him..only 2 or 3 have rvp

    i currently have roo/dzeko/suarez
and with the doubts im thinking of geting rid of dzeko for rvp for 4 point hit and captain him

could blow up in my face but could be genius

    worth the risk?

I have both and am captaining RVP. In other words I think he is the better option. Nailed on, has a run of excellent fixtures and Arsenal will surely be out to make a statement. Dzeko has form and decent fixtures but the threat of rotation makes him riskier than RVP in my opinion.

Sometimes people must realises that there can be a good reason that so many people are in agreement.

Not throwing that out there as a rule, but it makes no sense to me that sometimes people want to go against the crowd for the sake of being different.

What everyone else does is unimportant tbh.

I do agree with you to an extent. And while Dzeko is obviously a great prospect for his form and price, if he scores well then he also scores well for the other 750k owners of him. Similar to Rooney; I've had him since GWK1 but if he scores a lot of points now, I'm not too excited by it as so many people own him! Compare to Darren Bent, for example, who's owned by 20% less teams; if he scores well then it will propel you higher up the rankings.

Obviously you're praying that Dzeko does nothing though! (At least in my case, and yes, I also have Bent!)

That's the flip though isn't it - they score well and you get left behind.

If you think Rooney will score best, and he does - then you have two scenarios, you picked him despite everyone owning him and don't lose ground. Or, you didn't pick him and you do lose ground.

There is plenty of scope for gaining ground with the rest of your team/captain choice that, especially this early on, what the masses are doing should be of no bearing to your own choice. IMO

Long term though is RVP worth an extra 3.5m over Dzeko?

Well that's the price you pay isn't it. You can;t have them all, and in the Rooney, Dzeko, Suarez lineup you have three players, all in better teams, all on better form, 2 of which are significantly better value.

In my mind while Dzeko and Suarez are playing they are too good value to forego, so it comes down to Rooney v RVP, where reluctantly, i'm backing Rooney.

I'd certainly pick RvP over Suarez.

Liverpool could score 3 or 4, and he could get nothing.

If Arsenal do that, you know van Persie's coming in with double figures.

I agree to a point, I think if Liverpool score 3 or 4, 9 times out of 10 Suarez would get something. Don't get me wrong though, for the same price i'd rather have RVP.

For 2.5m extra though you're still backing a player who isn't in as good form and is in a team that is low on confidence and struggling. I'd also be very confident in saying that the gulf in quality (fantasy terms) between Suarez and RVP won't be as big as the gulf between the two players where you put that 2.5m to use.

I'm not sure. van Persie can go on a crazy run of form, and basically score in every game he plays.

Suarez will score a great goal, look sharp, then pull out a 2-pointer the next week.

Dalglish's over-use of him worries me. I think he's an injury waiting to happen.

lol, you must see the irony in posting that Suarez is an injury waiting to happen, while comparing him to RVP?

I don't doubt VP's ability, right now i'm just doubting Arsenal as a whole. When they look back on top I would think about getting rid, but it wouldn't be at Suarez' expense, would be for Rooney.

Like I say, it's that value. For RVP over Suarez, i'm getting a Sessegnon over Walcott, Barry Ferguson over Taarabt etc. The money is better put to other use imo. By going with Suarez and Walcott you still get Arsenal coverage (admittedly not their number one player), but you also get more weight in two positions.

My opinion obviously, but I think that;s where the value is.

To be fair, van Persie isn't a Saha type, he gets injured once a season - and that's it. it's just usually a big one. With Suarez, I can see him picking up multiple muscle injuries over the course of the season.

On the surface, that 2.5 does look to be put to better use, but with potential captains 9so double scores) like Suarez and RvP, that cash is put to much better use than, say, Ferguson to Taarabt.

You definitely raise some fair points, but I don't think we're gonna agree on this one.

I'm completely with you on the potential of RVP, I just think Suarez is better value, and until Arsenal get back to their best it's a no brainer to me. When Arsenal do look back to their best I'll likely bring him in for Rooney.

I've ended up with Nasri, originally because he was closer to going up in Value, and 0.1m cheaper. THe plan was to get him and sell him after a rise for Mata but I've decided to put that off for a few weeks.

Its only just dawned on me that I think Silva is the better option. Can't afford to switch now either.

He's the leading candidate for cheap strikers. It really is just a matter of whether that last big name goes in midfield or up front.

he's averaged 5.42 points for every 90 mins played. thats alright for 6.4 million. over 38 full games he would score 205 points. Also bear in mind a lot of the games he did play in he was coming off the bench. I think he could be a great shout this season .

If you've got two other 4.0 defenders on the bench I'd use the money on one of them for Brown/Woodgate etc.
