A hectic transfer window and the International break has thrown up a whole host of interesting options for this gameweek, and although Edin Dzeko has seemingly cornered the mainstream market with a staggering 390,000 transfers in the FPL game so far this week, there are still plenty of alternative options available if you’re looking for a ‘Differential’. As we gear up for another gameweek then, it’s time to take another look at the stand out options that have been missed by the masses and pick out our three favourites for this week…..

Daniel Sturridge

Juan Mata was the alternative this week and although the Spaniard looks to be on top form and will surely attract substantial investment over the coming weeks, it is Daniel Sturridge  that most catches the eye as a differential. He was outstanding in pre-season and would surely have been involved in Chelsea’s first three games were it not for his suspension, so at just 6.5m he looks great value and his current ownership of 0.9% should soar if he can get on the score sheet this weekend.

The obvious question mark over his starting role may be enough to put some off, but with Drogba definitely out of action against Sunderland, many respectable pundits have been backing a Mata/ Torres/Sturridge front three. Despite his indifference, getting the best from £50 million signing Fernando Torres has to be the number one priority for Andre Villas-Boas if he wants to get on at Chelsea, and Malouda, Kalou and Anelka have all been disappointing in this respect so far. With Villas-Boas and John Terry both commenting recently on how highly rated Sturridge has become at Chelsea, it certainly looks like he will get his chance this weekend, and at such a bargain price he looks like a perfect differential.

Per Mertesacker

Picking an Arsenal defender after their 8 goal mauling at Old Trafford might seem a bit odd, but with Arsenal expected to make wholesale changes to their back four for the weekend’s tie and Swansea still looking for their first goal of the campaign, they will be confident of picking up a clean sheet. The bookies certainly agree with this sentiment too – Paddy Power have them at evens for a clean sheet, the second lowest odds of any side. Their next six fixtures are also the easiest of any side according to our next six ticker, so with such an attractive run of fixtures to come, spending 6.0m on an Arsenal defender might just be one of the most sensible transfers you could make this week.

We covered the key facts and stats about Mertesacker earlier in the week with our Window Watch article, but a few key things have changed since then. Firstly Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out making the big German an almost dead cert to start, and will also by default make him a key target for corners and crosses. With Gibbs and Sagna also returning to fitness, Arsenal should also be a lot more solid at the back than last week adding to his clean sheet potential. Fellow new arrival Andre Santos is definitely one to keep an eye on, but recent reports suggest he is still short of match fitness and so Mertesacker looks like the strongest pick, despite his low ownership of just 1.1%.

Bryan Ruiz

After signing for Fulham in the final hour of the transfer window, Bryan Ruiz will be looking to settle into the Fulham side as quickly as possible and with a home tie against stuttering Blackburn, he has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. There is still a doubt over whether he’ll play the full 90 minutes, but reports suggest he is expected to start as part of a two man attack alongside a fit again Bobby Zamora. A detailed look into his statistics and history is given in another of our window watch articles from last week so further analysis is unnecessary here, but suffice to say, if he can recreate the form that made him such a key player at FC Twente then he looks good for goals, assists and bonus, and should go on to become a great value pick.

Despite coming in at a very affordable 7.0m in the FPL game, just 5000 managers have picked him up since his introduction to the FPL game last week. Although relatively unknown having played much of his career in the Eredivisie, this still seems like a very slow uptake for such a promising player and probably has much to do with Edin Dzeko’s unprecedented popularity – if you don’t buy into the hype however, Ruiz looks an excellent differential and his much lower price should help free up funds to use elsewhere.

    One final RMT please!!

    Krul | Vorm
Bosingwa Santon Ward | Woodgate Brown
Walcott Nasri Brunt Young | Dyer
    Dzeko Rooney(c) Adebayor

My main worries are lack of mata and suarez. Any thoughts?

I like that team. Budget defense (tho solid), strong midpark and 2 very in form strikers up front with a known goal scorer. I personally think its too early to make a call on Mata given we have only seen 24 minutes or so. Mind you they were good minutes. Lack of Suarez is an issue but at the end of the day you cant have everyone. Im leaving Suarez out of my WC team if thats any consolation.

And i have 0.4m cash at the moment!

Played a match Wednesday night for my college team, we won 2-1, a guy went down from their team in the box and another guy on his team picked up the ball to stop and see if he was okay. I was the only one who thought we deserved a penalty. Everyone else seemed oblivious, am I missing something?

Ha! Myself, our right back and one centre mid are okay, the rest are dire. Anyway, you'd all feel the same if it was your team in the Prem or you were playing a competitive game, on a hat trick and leading by only one goal, I don't think that just because you're in a match thats not on television you should be able to *pick up the ball* in your own area. *Picked up the ball* in his own area!!!? Still cant get over it tbh. Ref was a pr*ck aswell.

After much deliberation and changing my mind I think I've settled on my WC team, which is identical to the one I originally had in mind:

    Krul, Vorm (8.5m)
Kompany, Bosingwa, Enrique, S Taylor, Ward (25.5m)
Silva, Young, Anderson, O Hara, Dyer (36.1m)
    RVP, Suarez, Dzeko (29.9m)
    .1m in bank

    Anything I could improve?

Only a few minor nitpicking things that i can see.
      2 Newcastle at the back.
Possibly downgrade Enrique as his fixtures arent great in the near future. Possibly to De Laet or any 4.5 that tickles your fancy. This saves you some cash if you need to upgrade anywhere in the next couple weeks.
Better choices than Anderson I think for that price bracket.

Good team overall tho. The above are only minor issues. Job well done.

Rotation isn't great with keepers. Krul and Vorm have better rotation for .5m less though you may have more confidence in Given for clean sheets.

I'm giving him a go. Home fixture against Blackburn is an ideal opportunity for Fulham to get him off and running

This is unhealthy. FFS & TotalFPL both have De Laet in their teams. FFS's "Frisking the Fixtures" picks out West Brom and the "Scout Picks" mentions De Laet.

    Are Thingy & Long fit?

Enrique or De Laet? Didn't think I'd be asking that one!

Enrique because you'll feel stupid if they get a cleanie and Norwich don't.

WBA's strikers are fit according to an earlier tweet.

Enrique - Liverpool's overall fixtures not the best (3 away in next 4) and they haven't been able to defend for 90 minutes in the easier games.

Stoke, tough as nails at home and Shawcross has more goal potential.

Right, I've fannied about with it long enough, what do we think?

    Hennessey, Vorm
Kompany, Bosingwa, Brown, De Laet, Simpson
    Young, Silva, Arteta, O'Hara, Dyer
    Rooney, RVP, Holt

Obvious weakness is no Dzeko, but I'm concerned he'll be rotated ahead of CL. Happy with my cheap defenders as Sunderland/Newcastle rotate well. Thoughts?

Warning about the Sunderland/Newcastle rotation; so far they've been getting their clean sheets at the wrong times 😀 Strong team though, obviously.

I dont think getting rid of Baines now is a good idea. Two promising fixtures coming up. Im assuming you have 2 frees. So mayb Saha to Holt (or someone in that price range, altho Holt the nest option imo) and depending on funds that should allow you to go Bent to RVP?
In saying that tho Bent has good fixtures coming up.
Mikel and one of those keepers has to go eventually so mayb keeeping Bent is the better option and getting a better keeper in for this week. Either that or upgrading Mikel to Arteta (cash allowing) or just replace him with a Ohara,Jarvis,Cabaye,Taarabt. Take your pick really.

I can't believe so many people have Krul and Vorm as there keepers! yes, Newcastle have been great defensive early on in the season, but do you really think they'll keep it up?!same for Swansea, you'll regret not having a big keeper like Hart, Cech, Reina...
