We know now.

Roberto Mancini was the picture of innocence in his pre-match press interrogation. We suspected that he was due to pull Carlos Tevez from his exquisitely tailored sleeve for the home meet with Wigan. Hands up though, having pocketed the air miles and soaked up several in-flight movies, we were amongst those who pictured Sergio Aguero making way – like for like – it made sense. How wrong, how very wrong.

There was always mild concern, a twinge of doubt, that Edin Dzeko could be sacrificed following two Bosnian outings. Surely not though – surely the four goal blast at White Hart Lane had rendered Dzeko bomb proof?

Butter wouldn’t melt, Mancini appeared to scoff at the idea of changing a winning team in preparation for Wednesday’s date in Naples. Samir Nasri was fine – his troublesome hand injury wouldn’t keep him out. And yet, the Frenchman was preserved temporarily on the bench. More significantly, Mancini opted to hand him the potent Dzeko for company. The six-goal striker was left to shuffle uncomfortably while Aguero expertly stroked home City’s opener via the mesmeric David Silva. A hat-trick followed for the Argentine hitman, memories of Dezko’s White Hart Lane brilliance dissolved goal by goal.

There was of course mixed emotions in the Fantasy community. The despair of those who eagerly boarded the Bosnian’s bandwagon, matched only by the gleeful satisfaction of those who spurned the hot ticket. Fantasy Premier League Wildcards will have been fluttered to ride the wave of Dzeko’s rising stock but now, with rest and rotation already rearing it’s head, we’re left questioning the merits of Dzeko’s selection.

Mancini’s decision confirms that he is far from untouchable – regardless of form and performances on the pitch. City’s fluidity and goal power without him also demonstrates that Mancini can afford to tinker with the rich talent at his disposal and get results.

Four games in the next eleven days is indicative of City’s schedule and Fantasy investors are set to be left dreading the arrival of Mancini’s teamsheet for much of the season. Presumably we’ll see Dzeko take the field against Napoli on Wednesday; does that endanger his start at Fulham next Sunday? Gameweek six looks even more uncertain – Everton at home, Bayern Munich three days later. Where does Mancini shift Dzeko to fit into that puzzle?

His owners will be left asking the question week after week; can he deliver regularly enough to warrant such a level of anxiety?

Suddenly the dull security offered by the likes of Darren Bent looks attractive – an unglamorous ex, but while an unreliable Dzeko can gave us fireworks, Bent will never stand us up. Perhaps penny pinching up front is futile – Luis Suarez aside, perhaps we have to spend big to win big with our forwards?

So many questions remain, in truth we know very little from today’s events – the only thing that is certain is uncertainty. We suspected as much from Mancini – now we know for sure. Dzeko is at the mercy of the Italian’s tactical whims. He’s not the only one – it remains to be seen how many Fantasy managers are willing to play along.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyone having a bit of a stinking season still looking at their team thinking theirs good points in it? I feel I should WC as I'm gonna be way off the pace but god knows what I'd do. It appears it all about the right captain and Man City striker choice as to who's doing poor and who's doing well.

I have no idea, this is the weirdest season ever so far. Ive never had 4 captains in a row not score anything at all. Im just going to stick with what ive got and hope my luck changes.

My captains have been shocking: RVP, Torres, Suarez, RVP. No big hitters in any of the gwks. Just gonna leave it for the moment, barring injuries of course.

Dont - Strike force is good you need to strengthen the mid. I would say Silva and possibly Arteta, save the WC. I have been tempted also sue to poor captain choices and no united coverage but help out.

Bad start for me too but at least I don't feel as bad with RVP as a 4 pt cap than I did with Torres. Almost feels like a victory to get just 4 points. Rooney VC these three weeks has been rough though.

Did you watch the Chelsea game today? Sturridge didn't impress me whatsoever, other than taking the goal very well.

Malouda was awful when he came on, so unbelievably slow and lethargic, and I swear he never, ever passes to Torres.

It's so frustrating, as both would be ridiculously solid fantasy prospects every week, if only you could guarantee them playing.

Think I'm going to enjoy tonight's final Dzeko rise, and enjoy selling him on for the 0.2 profit.

        Let's see what happens mid-week I guess.

Yeah, Ramsey was slightly further forward, but neither really pushed up the way Fabregas was doing a couple of season ago.

I'd start looking at Walcott, but he was ridiculously bad today.

Why did you ever change from the tactics of two seasons ago, with Fabregas playing much further up the field than the other two in the middle? You were destroying teams with that formation when Fabregas and RVP were both fully fit.

It worked against the little clubs, but Chelsea and United read it very easily.

With this variation, it seems to be the reverse.

I also think Wenger felt it made us too dependant on Fabregas, which wasn't too clever when he was asking to leave every summer.

Ok so let me get this straight. For a soccerball team to be good just buy the name "Manchester" and put in your team and then they score lots of goals. Cool.

Form not fixtures every time. Bit of knee-jerk comment itself. But reckon it is defo true for strikers. best way to pick your captain. look at the any-time goal scorers. Whoever has the shortest price is your captain or if you wanted to work a little harder go to a spread betting firm (e.g sporting index) and look for the goal scorer minutes market then look for the player with the lowest goal scorer minute spread. This will give a indication of both how many goals the team is likely to score as well as the player. Won't work every time but at least it's a strategy.

It was the case, the amount of times people went with Torres, Fabregas and Drogba as captain when they were off form was unreal, only for them to be left disappointed.

Exactly. Remember Drogba at the beginning of last season. Tevez towards the back end. Torres seemingly having a perfect run of fixtures from GW2.|My classic example would be Defoe. I won't touch him with a barge pole - of off from but with good fixtures but as soon as he starts scoring, I'd stick him regardless of fixtures.

RVP was probably the lowest price this week anyway!

Definitely, you can afford to gamble a little more with the lesser players and go with fixtures but with the big players you must go with form everytime.

I am doing crap this year - bottom of my mini league (that I won the last two years - by 150 points last year). But I am quite relieved that I have played my WC (hasn't paid off yet - RVP (c)!) as I feel I can play the game properly now. Anyone else feel like this?

Nope. I stil have my WC and know I probably would've gotten the team wrong had I used it last week.

Much prefer to still have it 🙂

I just seem to be much more careful about transfers when I know tha I haven't got my WC to bail me out! Weird I know

That means nothing at this stage of the season, in one of my leagues last year I was about 100 points behind someone just before Christmas. In the end I think I got about 200 more points than him.

It's frustrating this early because a lot of people will fluke out the first few weeks, who don't necessarily even look at their team.

Suarez was priced 9.5 for a reason. Still a great player, though.

Some lessons/patterns carrying over from last season:
-If Lpool thrash a team, there is no guarantee that Suarez will pick up anything.
-It's not been worth having a Chelsea player since they beat Arsenal last October.
-Arsenal have been very poor at home post CC final.
-Baines and Rooney cost a bomb but are FPL gold.
    -Fixtures matter less and less.
-Somebody scores 4 or 5 goals one game means they'll probably draw a blank for the next one.
-Silva is the only MF value for money.

Don't agree on Suarez. He'll score points I reckon.

There's others but I'll collate them all later. I just want to clarify why Suarez is an extremely good FPL prospect, but at the mo, not a great one. Like last week, Lpool were scoring goals for fun last season at the end. To see pool win by 4,5 goals etc. and seeing Suarez play well but barely pick up a BP point on the OLD SYSTEM was very demoralising.

Ironically Dzeko will be rising tonight unless we see 100,000 NTO.

no point selling him now - he will surely play the next game unless he gets injured in the CL
