We know now.

Roberto Mancini was the picture of innocence in his pre-match press interrogation. We suspected that he was due to pull Carlos Tevez from his exquisitely tailored sleeve for the home meet with Wigan. Hands up though, having pocketed the air miles and soaked up several in-flight movies, we were amongst those who pictured Sergio Aguero making way – like for like – it made sense. How wrong, how very wrong.

There was always mild concern, a twinge of doubt, that Edin Dzeko could be sacrificed following two Bosnian outings. Surely not though – surely the four goal blast at White Hart Lane had rendered Dzeko bomb proof?

Butter wouldn’t melt, Mancini appeared to scoff at the idea of changing a winning team in preparation for Wednesday’s date in Naples. Samir Nasri was fine – his troublesome hand injury wouldn’t keep him out. And yet, the Frenchman was preserved temporarily on the bench. More significantly, Mancini opted to hand him the potent Dzeko for company. The six-goal striker was left to shuffle uncomfortably while Aguero expertly stroked home City’s opener via the mesmeric David Silva. A hat-trick followed for the Argentine hitman, memories of Dezko’s White Hart Lane brilliance dissolved goal by goal.

There was of course mixed emotions in the Fantasy community. The despair of those who eagerly boarded the Bosnian’s bandwagon, matched only by the gleeful satisfaction of those who spurned the hot ticket. Fantasy Premier League Wildcards will have been fluttered to ride the wave of Dzeko’s rising stock but now, with rest and rotation already rearing it’s head, we’re left questioning the merits of Dzeko’s selection.

Mancini’s decision confirms that he is far from untouchable – regardless of form and performances on the pitch. City’s fluidity and goal power without him also demonstrates that Mancini can afford to tinker with the rich talent at his disposal and get results.

Four games in the next eleven days is indicative of City’s schedule and Fantasy investors are set to be left dreading the arrival of Mancini’s teamsheet for much of the season. Presumably we’ll see Dzeko take the field against Napoli on Wednesday; does that endanger his start at Fulham next Sunday? Gameweek six looks even more uncertain – Everton at home, Bayern Munich three days later. Where does Mancini shift Dzeko to fit into that puzzle?

His owners will be left asking the question week after week; can he deliver regularly enough to warrant such a level of anxiety?

Suddenly the dull security offered by the likes of Darren Bent looks attractive – an unglamorous ex, but while an unreliable Dzeko can gave us fireworks, Bent will never stand us up. Perhaps penny pinching up front is futile – Luis Suarez aside, perhaps we have to spend big to win big with our forwards?

So many questions remain, in truth we know very little from today’s events – the only thing that is certain is uncertainty. We suspected as much from Mancini – now we know for sure. Dzeko is at the mercy of the Italian’s tactical whims. He’s not the only one – it remains to be seen how many Fantasy managers are willing to play along.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

last season it was standard to not make changes until friday night due to risk of injury, is this trend changing due to price rises happening very early in the week and seamingly a lot more regular????

I have certainly fallen behind in terms of squad value by not making early transfers/wildcarding. For Bosingwa to have risen 0.4 already is fairly outrageous.

I think as the season goes on and injuries / tiredness feature more, the golden late transfer rule will come to fruition again. I'm going to stick to what I know even if it is blindly ignorant.

Arshavin and Gibbs - no. Both were poor. Basically every Swansea attack came from down the left because Gibbs wasn't playing too well and Arshavin had no intention of coming back.

Arteta, Koscielny and Frimpong were Arsenal's stand out performers.

Some people in my mini-league have been captaining Rooney every week and doing handsomely, whilst I have had Carroll, (GW1), Torres, (GW2 and GW3) and Van Persie, (GW4), as captain so far. All my captains started their games, and they are all strikers.

I decided to rank all non-relegated teams home and away performances from last season by points and then goal difference. To sort out the three promoted teams, I inserted them in order of promotion with their home forms as just worse than the lowest home form, and their away forms in order of promotion just below the worst away record, since these teams are assumed to be weaker than the 17 current Premier League teams.

Here are the rankings: (Home form in capitals, away form in lower case)

    39 norwich N/A N/A
    40 swansea N/A N/A

The positions of 1 to 40 are the 'easyness' factor in that if you have your captain playing Man Utd at Old Trafford, you get 1 point as that game isn't easy, but if you have your captain hosting QPR then that gets you 38 easyness points.

Rooney-goers have had arsenal (10), tottenham (19), BOLTON (7) and WEST BROM (13). This totals 49 in easyness rating.

My captains have had sunderland (26), norwich (39), swansea (40) and west brom (33). This totals 138 in easyness rating.

Now you can argue that I have chosen bad, out of form players playing for worse teams, but then this can be countered slightly by the huge easyness difference between the opponents.

So how come the Rooney-goers get 16 goals, 4 assists, 18 bonus points and 16 appearance points, and I end up with 0 goals, 0 assists, 0 bonus points, 1 yellow card and 14 appearance points. Why such the huge difference.

      Form form form form.

There was no reason to pick any of those based on their performances this season. Torres in GW3 was just mental IMO.

So what you're saying is that points chasing is the method that wins out in the end.

Even people that chased Dzeko's points, and captained him with Rooney as back-up; they still get a captained hattrick for their error...

That can be overall points wise or points per game wise, or value for money wise...
Anyway, when all fit, Cole and Terry will certainly keep their places, while Bosingwa and Ivanovic compete for RB, with Ivanovic seemingly more inclined to play as CB in AVB's plans, Luiz and Alex also threaten for that other CB role but Luiz seems the more likely to displace Ivanovic if anyone does, so I would say Bosingwa, as he'll get the clean sheets of Terry, Cole and Ivanovic/Luiz, (albeit they look few and far between) and poses an equivalent attacking threat. Consistency is an issue as is rotation in the bigger games, but they wont be the high scoring games really, so basically Bosingwa while he is in the team only because he's cheap, if they were all the same price obviously Terry would be the no.1 pick followed closely by Cole. Personally, I feel our defence needs improving if we are to threaten for the title, so steer clear of over investment in Chelsea defenders for now.

then there's the annoying thing that striker spots are so precious, hard to justify him. would love to though

It's really two out of Dzeko, Aguero, RVP, Hernandez, Suarez and Adebayor though, I doubt anyone could logically leave out Rooney

You can write off Hernandez due to Welbequé rotation. You are realisticlly only going to pick 1 of Aguero or Dzeko... so it's down to Rooney, Suarez, barndoor, RvP for the last two spots.

Plus Suarez is nearly at 50% ownership now with poor fixtures and middling form.

you know when you have £1 in your account and you put it on hernandez FGS, then you put those winnings on benzema 2+ goals and federer 3-2 and djokovic 3-2? pretty cool.
