We know now.

Roberto Mancini was the picture of innocence in his pre-match press interrogation. We suspected that he was due to pull Carlos Tevez from his exquisitely tailored sleeve for the home meet with Wigan. Hands up though, having pocketed the air miles and soaked up several in-flight movies, we were amongst those who pictured Sergio Aguero making way – like for like – it made sense. How wrong, how very wrong.

There was always mild concern, a twinge of doubt, that Edin Dzeko could be sacrificed following two Bosnian outings. Surely not though – surely the four goal blast at White Hart Lane had rendered Dzeko bomb proof?

Butter wouldn’t melt, Mancini appeared to scoff at the idea of changing a winning team in preparation for Wednesday’s date in Naples. Samir Nasri was fine – his troublesome hand injury wouldn’t keep him out. And yet, the Frenchman was preserved temporarily on the bench. More significantly, Mancini opted to hand him the potent Dzeko for company. The six-goal striker was left to shuffle uncomfortably while Aguero expertly stroked home City’s opener via the mesmeric David Silva. A hat-trick followed for the Argentine hitman, memories of Dezko’s White Hart Lane brilliance dissolved goal by goal.

There was of course mixed emotions in the Fantasy community. The despair of those who eagerly boarded the Bosnian’s bandwagon, matched only by the gleeful satisfaction of those who spurned the hot ticket. Fantasy Premier League Wildcards will have been fluttered to ride the wave of Dzeko’s rising stock but now, with rest and rotation already rearing it’s head, we’re left questioning the merits of Dzeko’s selection.

Mancini’s decision confirms that he is far from untouchable – regardless of form and performances on the pitch. City’s fluidity and goal power without him also demonstrates that Mancini can afford to tinker with the rich talent at his disposal and get results.

Four games in the next eleven days is indicative of City’s schedule and Fantasy investors are set to be left dreading the arrival of Mancini’s teamsheet for much of the season. Presumably we’ll see Dzeko take the field against Napoli on Wednesday; does that endanger his start at Fulham next Sunday? Gameweek six looks even more uncertain – Everton at home, Bayern Munich three days later. Where does Mancini shift Dzeko to fit into that puzzle?

His owners will be left asking the question week after week; can he deliver regularly enough to warrant such a level of anxiety?

Suddenly the dull security offered by the likes of Darren Bent looks attractive – an unglamorous ex, but while an unreliable Dzeko can gave us fireworks, Bent will never stand us up. Perhaps penny pinching up front is futile – Luis Suarez aside, perhaps we have to spend big to win big with our forwards?

So many questions remain, in truth we know very little from today’s events – the only thing that is certain is uncertainty. We suspected as much from Mancini – now we know for sure. Dzeko is at the mercy of the Italian’s tactical whims. He’s not the only one – it remains to be seen how many Fantasy managers are willing to play along.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Dzeko is at 378% to rise...I'm sure it's been mentioned before somewhere but why didn't Dzeko rise in price last night? And can we expect him to rise tonight by either 0.1?

Even if you do w/c, there are still lots of unresolved questions around player reliability.

I'm just waiting for the next International break when hopefully we'll have a better idea of ff options.

Looks like Arteta was involved a bit today according to the optas: most touches, most passes in oppo half.

    "...the only certainy is uncertainy."

So who is certain from Man U/City/CHS?

    Man U: Young, Nani, Rooney?
    City: Silva, Yaya?
    CHS: Lampard, Mata?

Everyone else is just a liability so it seems. 😕

Certainly. Even Rooney will be open to rotation, especially in the later stages.

Starting wings will be Young and Val - Nani will slide in on either side for rotation's sake, esp. in regards to CL weeks/matches.

Will keep Rooney, Bent, Suarez and Silva, but it seems every other player is up-in-the-air. I don't fancy any Arsenal players, only Adebayor from Spurs is appealing but I'm happy with my forwards.

i'm going to bring him in after next week, as i'll need a double transfer to get him, unless i move nasri, silva or young. But you have to remember a few things - he had a great year at liverpool last year, esp end of season, very attack minded. AVB signed him, when modric deal died, so he's going to play in the role that modric would have, which is where AVB has identified chelsea need some creativity. no coincidence that sturridge, mata and mierels started today - this is a chelsea team post transfer window closed. mierles is worth signing esp at 7.4 million. debating moving suarez and brunt to get sturrige and suarez

OK general question is it madness to consider not having rooney in the team for the foreseeable future?
I think I have a nice solid team. Although I undoubtably need some form of Man United Coverage I feel that getting rooney in would ruin it. I remember granville telling me that Rooney was worth 12m on these boards. I shot him down said was not worth that...now I feel very silly sorry Granville if you read this!

8 goals in 4 games against decent opposition. Rooney == CRon (almost! in FF terms)

I don't see Roon putting 3 past Chels, so you could easily tread water for a week ... but the fixtures will open up for Utd soon, and he's likely to remain a 'must have'.

And if anyone replies with any sort of "form more important than fixtures" malarkey I swear I will lose my mind, strangle a kitten, and hack your phone account.

      Please - save a kitten. 🙂

Yes it is madness. I'm shocked people are still asking this question. Rooney AND Utd are in superb form, and Rooney is Utd's only guaranteed attacking cover. Probs will get my captain vote this week at home to Chelsea.

warnock is annoying, the only thing he's playing for is clean sheets.

he won't score goals, get bonus or anything. the odd assist is the best you can hope for IMO, get someone like shawcross instead

It's gonna be really hard to work him in for GW6. So many top forwards have nice games. Rooney not so much but he is simply untouchable at the moment.

meireles and bosingwa chelsea coverage will do me nicely, nobody is guarenteed upfront but AVB's signings WILL PLAY, so meireles has to have a really bad run of form IMO for AVB not to play him.

Jafalad is also on about signing him. so just 3 people on this bandwagon. but i need a double to sign him, and going to wait til after the united match next week. wonder would it be crazy to consider a 5 man midfield of nasri silva young mata and mierles, to play with rooney and sturridge?
