Both Manchester clubs continued their devastating start to the season yesterday with a combined eight goals without reply against Bolton and Wigan, while Chelsea hang on to their coat-tails after a solid win at Sunderland. Stoke took the scalp of Liverpool at the Britannia and Spurs end Wolves’ unbeaten start, as ex-Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor found the net on his debut. Leighton Baines excelled in Everton’s home draw with Aston Villa, while Swansea once again failed to find the net. Here’s the notes from yesterday’s games:

Solid Stoke

Tony Pulis’ side were resolute under pressure once more, keeping a third clean sheet in four matches having conceded just a single goal so far this term. Fantasy managers will be alert to Stoke’s defensive potential with the likes of Asmir Begovic, Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth surely set to start attracting investment once the fixture list looks more favourable.

Jonathan Walters also stands out as an option, he earned and converted the winning penalty and, at 6.0, is available as an “out of position” prospect in midfield. Walters kept his start up front with Peter Crouch ousting Kenwyne Jones to the bench. With Cameron Jerome and, at some point, Ricardo Fuller, as options, competition for places in the Stoke attack will remain stiff.

Suarez Blanks Again

Luis Suarez was once again Liverpool’s most prominent player and major threat but, for the second consecutive game, he drew a blank. The Uruguayan had several efforts on goal and his opportunity at the death was, by his standards, a sitter. His Fantasy owners will be fidgeting given the devastating form being displayed elsewhere in the league. Trips to Spurs and Everton in the next three Gameweeks won’t be easy for Liverpool and Suarez but, his Fantasy owners will be clinging to the hope that he’ll return major profits in forthcoming home matches with Wolves and Norwich.

Sunderland’s Struggle Goes On

The Black Cats slipped to their eighth home defeat in nine league games with the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea. It’s hard to look for the positives at Sunderland right now, with just two goals to show for their efforts this season. Ji Dong-Won earned the consolation in this one from debutant’s Nicklas Bendtner’s assist, and he may yet get more opportunities if Steve Bruce considers a shake-up of his lineup. The fixture list does at least look favourable with the next three bringing matches against Stoke, Norwich and West Brom which at least presents the opportunity for improvement.

Sturridge Takes His Chance

Andre Villas-Boas was ruthless with his teamsheet changes, dropping a forlorn Fernando Torres to the bench along with Florent Malouda with Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge drafted in. Raul Meireles benefited as Mikel was left out following international duty.

All three players took their opportunities with Mata denied a goal by the woodwork, while Sturridge and Meireles combined for Chelsea’s second goal. The cheeky back-heeled finish from Sturridge announced his return to the Chelsea fold following suspension and, with a 6.5 price tag in the FPL, he’ll inevitably attract interest. Replaced on 61 minutes, it’s clear that Sturridge will need to maintain form to cement a starting role. Meireles was also hugely impressive and, at 7.4, he may yet pick up investment from those unable to acquire the more expensive Juan Mata.

Wolves Tamed

Mick McCarthy’s side demonstrated plenty of effort in the 2-0 home defeat to Spurs but were undone by two quality finishes from the visitors. Jamie O’Hara was once again prominent, firing in a number of goal-bound efforts from range without earning returns. Elsewhere, the threat from Wolves was minimal with Matt Jarvis only fit enough to appear from the bench following an ankle injury.

Adebayor Convinces On Debut

Harry Redknapp would have been delighted to see his new signings – Scott Parker and Emmanuel Adebayor settle so comfortably and combine for Tottenham’s opener at Molineux. Parker was one of five changes made to the Spurs lineup, drafted into the midfield with Lennon and Rafael Van der Vaart absent through injury. That meant that Redknapp deployed Gareth Bale on the right, with Niko Kranjcar lining up on the left flank. Ledley King made his first start of the season for Spurs, with Michael Dawson missing out due to an achilles problem.

Adebayor was partnered by Jermain Defoe up front and both got on the scoresheet to give Fantasy managers food for thought. Available for 8.0 and 8.4 in the FPL respectively, they undoubtedly offer potential, although fixtures against Liverpool and Asrenal in the next three may cause some doubt in the short-term. From Gameweek 8 onwards, Tottenham’s fixtures look favourable and that could see increased investment coming Adebayor’s way in particular.

Rooney Unstoppable

The United juggernaut rolled on at the Reebok yesterday evening with another ruthless exhibition from the champions. Javier Hernandez showed his predatory skills with a well-taken double on his first league start but once again it was all about Wayne Rooney. A three goal salvo means he’s the only player to find the net in the first four Gameweeks and so far this Fantasy season, it’s been enough to hand Rooney the captain’s armband and sit back as he destroys team after team.

With Chelsea travelling to Old Trafford next Sunday, the 44% -and rising- of Fantasy managers who currently own him will be left in two minds as to whether to continue with this tactic, though it’s hard to look elsewhere, given his rich vein of form.

Trotters Continue to Ship Goals

Owen Coyle made two changes from Bolton’s last game at Anfield. Mark Davies started in place of Fabrice Muamba in central midfield while Dedryk Boyata made his league debut for the Trotters at right-back but the 5-0 hammering means Bolton have conceded eleven goals in their last three games. With Arsenal and Chelsea still to come in their next three games, a win at home to Norwich next week will be vital for Coyle’s side.

Silva Looks Secure

The main news was centred on rotation at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. Roberto Mancini made four changes in total, with only one in defence- Micah Richards replaced Pablo Zabaleta at right-back, while Carlos Tevez, Adam Johnson and James Milner all returned to the starting XI, with Dzeko, Samir Nasri and Gareth Barry omitted ahead of the midweek Champions League game with Napoli.

Though Aguero stole the headlines with a hat-trick, David Silva was again magnificent in midfield and, at present, looks the least likely to be rotated of City’s attacking options.

Wigan Lose Unbeaten Record

Wigan arrived at the Etihad Stadium as one of the few remaining unbeaten sides in the league. One win in their first three games against the promoted clubs was hardly promising, though and the Latics slipped to their first loss at the hands of a rampant City , Wigan slipped to their first defeat of the season at the Etihad Stadium.

Gunners Struggle for Form

Fantasy managers were left frustrated with Arsenal’s performance at the Emirates yesterday. In particular, Robin Van Persie’s performance was of great disappointment- the Dutchman was granted the armband by many but failed to fire as the home side scraped a 1-0 win, with Andrei Arshavin the unlikely goal hero. The Gunners will need time to gel, with the influx of new signings gradually making their way into Arsene Wenger’s starting XI- Mikel Arteta and Per Mertersacker started yesterday, while Yossi Benayoun also came on as a second half sub.

A trip to Blackburn next week is followed by three home games in their next four, with Bolton, Sunderland and Stoke all rolling up at the Emirates, offering plenty chance for Van Persie et al to redeem themselves.

Toothless Swans

Four games into the season and Swansea have still to find the net. Despite all their possession play, Brendan Rodgers’ side have lacked any sort of cutting edge, though Scott Sinclair hit the woodwork and Danny Graham missed a clear cut chance late on. A home game with West Brom present the Welsh club with the perfect chance to break their scoring duck. At the back, Michel Vorm gifted the Gunners a soft winner but nevertheless has conceded just one goal in his last three games.

Baines the Creator

While a penalty boosted Leighton Baines’ Fantasy tally in yesterday’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, it was his creative side that really caught the eye. The Everton left-back made more goalscoring chances than any other player in the seven matches yesterday and although he failed to pick up an assist, is showing just why he outscored so many midfielder in last season’s FPL. Tim Cahill led the line for the Toffees as David Moyes went without a recognised striker, while Seamus Coleman returned from injury, meaning Ross Barkley dropped to the bench.

Bent Struggles for Goals

The only surprise aspect of Aston Villa’s goals in the Everton draw was a lack of involvement from Darren Bent. The forward continues to struggle for goals under new boss Alex McLeish and although the Midlands outfit have been defensively more solid, their star forward has found the net just once so far this season. Gabby Agbonlahor, at 6.5 in comparsion to Bent’s 10.0, grabbed Villa’s last equaliser and is offering far better value for money right now, though Bent has shown time and again it’s never good idea to write him off.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

People do not realise that you have 4 subs and can change formation. So if a midfielder gets injured I change from 3-4-3 to 4-4-2 etc. I have Ferguson and I think its a clever move as you get more money to spend clearly.

I can do Taylor R -> Taylor (SWA) and Brunt -> Arteta. I am not convinced of Brunt, last season he was nailed on, but getting subbed at 65 last game and now on the bench is a waste of 6 mill.

I am quite happy with the team as well. Point wise it hasn't been great yet, but I think it will over time.

Decided not to make any transfers for next week and keep 2 for week 6 to get Rooney and a 6-6.5 mid for Dzeko and Young.

    Vorm (Krul)
Kompany, Ward, S Taylor (Enrique, Boswinga)
Silva, Young, O Hara, Dyer (Anderson)
    RVP (c), Suarez, Dzeko

Am telling myself that this team, specifically the strikeforce, is going to do the business next week. Only way to get over not doing my proposed week 6 transfer yesterday morning! Anyone think this is a bad plan?

I may end up selling him after a few weeks and upgrading the midfield again but I will use those weeks to get a clearer picture on who the good options are.

Lads, serious question, would really appreciate some opinions.

As one of the forlorn non Roo owners, my mini league rival is running away, having captained the b*stard for the last 2 weeks.
What do you think the best way is of catching him?

I'm of 2 minds. I could get Roo in, which won't help me close as he won't be a differential but at least if he keeps getting monster returns he's not pulling away via Rooney. Then with Roo I could rely on other differentials to try and claw the lead back.
This would mean a hit this week.

Or I could ignore Rooney and stick with all differentials. The prob with that is if 44% or something have Roo I'm getting hammered every time he scores, and of course theres no shifting him from my rivals team.

    Opinions?

Same boat mate, last two weeks rivals have stuck the (c) on Rooney. I thought having RVP would be fine. But I'm going to be taking a 4 point hit to bring Rooney in this week, so the rivals can't extend their 70 point lead. Then I'll attempt to ebb away at the lead by captaining RVP in the coming weeks. Hopefully can get it down to 50 points in the next few.

Dont change strategy now. Rooney wont keep this up. Benfica will teach EPL how to play against United. United arent significantly better than last year(at least not to merit these results against these teams). Van Persie will come good soon as will other midfield options that you possibly cant have if wasting all of your budget up front.

rooney is essential. i took too long on van der vart last season and the gap was too much to close. gte him in now and go for "cap the fixtures" IE captain whatever players has easier fixture and most likely to score. i appreciate this wont work every week.(see week just gone) but surely long term it will be better than captaining the same player week in week out.

It worked fine when Ronaldo played for United to captain him every week. I just dont think the strategy makes sense. If you're trying to catch people that captain Rooney every week and you believe it is essential to have him, might as well captain him every week and make up the points elsewhere. If rooney draws a blank and your other choice for captain scores 13 points, then you have only picked up 11 points by not captaining him. However, if he outscores youre choice, which can happen often, then you are giving away space. If you believe you want to negate him, because you are scared of him, then you need to captain him week in week out. If not, then continue your strategy and spend money in other areas. Then you get the added benefit of captaining another player and the points of more money spent in other areas(which can also help if your captain flops. Rooney has averaged 12.5 ppg so far - if he ends the season averaging 9 ppg it will still be high.

Ah, someone else who feels the pain! Would mean dropping Dzeko, who I just got in! Typical kneejerk. Was a bad move as I should have just taken the hit this week for the Roo and It would have already paid itself back. I'm also looking at fixtures and thinking having Dzeko could still come good next few weeks "if" Roo goes off the boil or breaks a leg or something, which would be handy! No, maybe just a strain.

My fron 3 are Dzeko, Aguero, Suarez. Also have Silva thinking I'd treble up for Cities run of fixtures but now regretting thinking its overkill as either is droppable and Roo is not.

Depends how you rate your mini league rival. The people at the top in my leagues have teams with loads of bad picks but Rooney captain. I'm confident by bringing Rooney in week 6 I can catch them over the season by good picks across the team. Those I actually see as rivals for the season are doing badly like me

I don't rate him actually as previous 2 seasons playing this game I've easily beaten him by a couple hundred points or more, he's never finished above the top 300000. Agreed, my mini league leader's team is horrible, but Roo as captain has saved him, it wont continue.

its not a matter of if but when. Rooney captain isnt the hard part to accept, rather its the lack of consistency and good point hauls from other players. Rooney hat trick could easily be negated by a goal and assist and cleanie from any midfield player with 3 bonus(its a difference of only 3 points). A midfield player with a brace scores just about as much as Roo hat trick. If you have a few midfield players that couldnt afford otherwise doing either one of those, or even just a goal here and there, then Money wasted on Rooney would have to be rethought.

He only played because Odemwingie was injured? When you saw that Woy said he was thinking about playing Long and Odemwingie together today did you really think Tchoyi was going to play?

Seriously cannot begin to understand why Hoolahan has been dropped, again. He's by far and away their most creative player, and surely they want to play him in games like these which they have to target winning?

Hopefully WBA score two early on, and that prick Lambert is forced to bring his best player.

Yeah, and look how that game went. They need to win home games against West Brom and Stoke if they are to have any chance of staying up.

Stoke was slightly more understandable because of their particular style of football, but leaving him out against West Brom is absolute lunacy IMO.

Maybe Lambert sees him as a Charlie Adam type. Attacking flair but defensive liability. Who knows, i'd get rid of him pronto though. Your midfield..... bejesus!

Luckily next week I'll confidently play 4 defenders next week so I can bench a few of the midfielders. I should of seen it coming with Brunt though, been poor so far this season and bound to be rotation in our midfield.

I think it might be a cultural thing. Axing the creative/weak player who doesn't work enough is a solution that plenty of managers think of before most others.

I'm not surprised Brunt has been left out, he's been very ineffective so far this season and we have so many midfielders to choose from. Thomas and Dorrans on the wings will be very interesting.

Anyone ever noticed a channel called BEN before on Sky+ (mines in Ireland channel 184). It has Premier League football from Ghana on. Never seen it before. Tekkers a-plenty.

Though it does have horrible memories for me of being booed by hundreds of fans when I played a match in Uganda for missing a sitter. The horror.

I was doing a bit of volunteer work there and they asked me and another lad working with me to play for the village team against their rival village (it was pretty rural, about 150km away from Kampala). There was about a thousand watching because they heard a couple of Brits were going to play.
It was smack bang on the Equator and was absolutely roasting. Plus the grass was up to shin height. Anyway I was being roasted alive by the heat and struggling away up front. One or two nice touches to build false confidence then I was put clean through, made an absolute mess of it (comparable to Earnshaw's miss against England) and fell on my arse.
Everyone watching started shouting MUZUNGU MUZUNGU MUZUNGU MUZUNGU (whitey) and jeering at the miss. Every time I touched the ball afterwards MUZUNGU MUZUNGU MUZUNGU. Oh man it was mortifying. I was almost glad to be subbed off at half time. The other fella was subbed as well to be fair, we had both turned purple at that point.

        That miss still haunts me.

I've missed out on a lot of Silva points but i'm not that fussed on getting him in. Seems to pricely now and i think that even he's likely to get rotated when the fixtures kick in properly, that and i can't see him getting 2 assists all season long. Far too many good Man City options to warrant getting any of them i reckon. There strikers are a gamble regardless on who you choose and they have plenty of options in the midfield aswell.
