Yesterdayโ€™s two games featured four teams yet to record a single victory between them in the three August Gameweeks. By the end of the day, West Brom were the only ones to break their duck, with returning talisman Peter Odemwingie making the difference at Norwich. Fulham were held to a draw by Blackburn, as under-fire boss Steve Kean finally picked up a point in the 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage. Hereโ€™s some notes on yesterdayโ€™s games:

Odemwingie Returns

Peter Odemwingie wasted no time in serving Fantasy managers a reminder of his potential yesterday afternoon. The Nigerian, making his first start of the season due to an ankle injury, scored the only goal of the game at Carrow Road yesterday, slotting home after a defensive mix-up involving Ritchie Da Laet and stand-in keeper Declan Rudd. Odemwingie may have missed a penalty but he was a threat throughout and has walked away with all 3 Bonus Points this morning. With (swa, FUL, sun, WOL) in his next four, Odemwingie looks set to carry on from his brilliant form of last season as the Baggies finally begin to flourish.

Canaries Crumble

Norwich were the masters of their own downfall at Carrow Road. A mix-up between Ritchie De Laet and stand-in keeper Declan Rudd provided West Brom with the chance to clinch the match and means Norwich have yet to chalk up a clean sheet this season. At the other end of the pitch, Paul Lambert will be more than unhappy his side were unable to find the net- the Baggies had picked up two clean sheets last term and had conceded in every game so far in this season- to draw a blank at home is a worrying sign.

Zamora Overshadows Ruiz

Martin Jol paired his big-money buy Bryan Ruiz with Bobby Zamora for the home clash with Blackburn, as the latter returned from injury. The move saw Clint Dempsey shifted into left midfield and end his stint as an attacker but while Zamora grabbed Fulhamโ€™s goals in the 1-1 draw, Ruiz seemed overwhelmed by the gameโ€™s frantic nature and was withdrawn at half-time as a result. The introduction of Moussa Dembele gave the Cottagers a more solid look and they were more than a little unlucky not to bag three points against a poor Blackburn side.

Dann Adds Solidity

Scott Dann made his debut for Blackburn at Craven Cottage, partnering Chris Samba at the heart of the back-four. Sambaโ€™s half-time withdrawal due to a back problem saw Gael Givet slot in alongside Dann at centre half and the new boy was impressive in both halves, helping Rovers address a poor away record that had seen them average two goals against per away game last term. Having already conceded three in their one away match this season, Dannโ€™s presence helped steady the ship and restrict Fulham to just one goal, as Steve Keanโ€™s side picked up their first point of the season.

    Just a comment on transfer "Tactics". This year I am trying the carry over a transfer for the next gameweek, where possible.
    1 It has the advantage that by skipping a transfer one week it avoids a "knee jerk".
    2 It also makes it easier to upgrade a player when you have two free transfers.
    3 Its like a mini wildcard each week! ๐Ÿ™‚
    4 It allows a wait and see approach, so possible transfers can be viewed again to see if they start, or play well prior to purchase.
    5 The only negative I can see is that when its a no transfer week price rises can be missed.

      I think that 4 is a big advantage. Like this week, you could kneejerk and bring in Sturridge or wait and see if he plays against United (see my post below)

      Yes, in a perfect world I'd also always use a 0-2-0-2-0-2... transfer pattern. Unfortunately you often get to the stage where you just need to make a transfer each week.

        I think the perfect situation would be: 0-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 etc (always knowing you have an extra in reserve for emergencies leading to: 0-1-1-1-2-0-1-1-1-2-0-1 etc)

    What are people's thoughts about City's strikers? Are any of them a good FPL bet or too rotaton prone? Aguero? Dzeko? What are people planning long term on this?

    Also, if Sturridge can keep his place he could become the bargain of the season at 6.5 - if he is n the team vs United then I think that is an indicator that he is now first choice.

      Out of those two I would pick either Sturridge or Aguero or both.
      Sturridge is a cheap option and Aguero is just pure class (better value then Rooney), also he can be downgraded easier if injured etc, even if Aguero comes on as a sub he can create havoc.

      I'm in no place to comment - I'm so far behind.

      But I wouldn't do your keeper sub, I think Given/Vorm is fine.

      Your best bet would be to hold on to your transfer for now.

      begovic and vorm arguably rotate better than given and vorm so definitely upside there, particularly as you don't have shawx or woodgate.

      was conisdering the same change but had more pressing priorities elsewhere...cough - bryan ruiz - cough!

        Ya this worries me. But Nani is just so consistent. May look at Young as United i think warrant 2 attackers.
        Think they will continue to score big or at least 2 in majority of fixtures. Even stoke away i think they will do well

        Chelsea are bloody annoying to cover and their fixtures arent amazing. Even Swansea are showing some defensive ability so maybe a punt on Sturridge could be worth it.

      Who of the big guns dont u currently have?

      Reason i ask is, those of us who are struggling have already had a couple of go's at picking a team and it aint happening. Still think their is a lot of uncertainty, with how well some teams are actually gonna do, where new signings are gonna fit etc. Id say try and get the essential players in but dont WC, i honestly think u might regret it. Im tempted myself as im around 70 points adrift but id probably just throw in a load of players my rivals have and thats not gonna get me anywhere. Id rather ride it out for a few weeks, wait for teams to settle, bargain options may still come to surface, a change in favourable fixtures etc and you would want to WC again.

      Just my thoughts, i dont like using my WC early usually, i didnt use one till the january one last year and came in the top 3k, it can be really nice to have it in those later months.

        Ya im trying to resist it too.

        I mainly dont have a city mid and rest of my mids are pretty poor. I would like a Jarvis type mid rangeand another United midfielder also. i currently have mid of moses ferguson hoolahn lampard walcott which needs overhauling.

        Added to that Suarez has 1 nice game in next few and although i think he will score maybe money spent elsewhere may do better.

        I think there is some consistency arising now with United , City and some nice mid range options.

          I also dont have a City mid, that will change after next week when i do Cahill -> Nasri/Silva.

          Your midfield isnt great on paper like mine really but i still think Moses might be worth keeping at a cheapie, hes gonna play and is an attacking player an around that price your not gonna find much else. Im not a fan of having Ferguson and Hoolahan is frustrating but id definetly keep Walcott, giving just one game would be mental. With that Midfield you could easily do Lampard + Hoolahan to 2 decent midfielders and it would look a whole lot better.

          Suarez has had a couple of disappointing point scoring games but has been so close to scoring in both games, the fixtures arent great but he will come good im sure of that.

          Its up to u! Good luck either way.

      Didn't expect you to be WC'ing so early.

      As I look at it:

      Vorm/Krul - nothing spectacular, but I don't rate Newcastle's ability to maintain their defensive record (especially since you have Simpson in your defence)
      Defence - solid, obvious risk if Bos ever loses his place, but Enrique is an easy sub after that. I'd rather have Brown to rotate with Simpson though.
      Midfield - Nani is an interesting punt, but VdV is back from injury so consider him (especially at his lower price), Walcott is pretty pants in my books - Mata after this GW could be a gem in the same price bracket. Walters could be a nice option over Jarvis/Taarabt, I'd wait to tonight to see which QPR mid to take though (Barton?)
      Forwards - I like, except I think Dzeko will cause you headaches, you can't pick when he will play and your subs aren't good enough to come through (you'll also end up with times when Sturridge and Dzeko don't play - leaving you with Dyer and Ward playing).

    I agree that this season is very difficult compared to recent seasons. My captain choices have returned 2,2,1,2. All my weekly scores have been below average. There are about 10 people in my mini leage and half are fpl virgins. And surprise surprise, its all the newbies that are romping away at the top, nailing the captain every week and generally getting lucky. Last yr in my minileague I was 100 points behind in january and ended up winning by nearly 200 points, so I'm not too worried about being behind......at the moment lol. I have had 7 players hit the woodwork (a few twice) and a few last minute cleanies ruined. The frustrating thing is, I believe I'm doing everything right, making calculated and justified decisions, but just not having the luck. Luck, IMO can frustratingly be a massive massive factor between having an excellent week and a terrible week. Its just annoying when you expect to do well and misfortune continues week after week. Then you need to scratch around for a differential or play the slowly but surely catch up game, which is a season long anxiety. Nevertheless, Im never gonna give up, Id rather die!

        The difference between this season and last is, that although the newbies always pick Rooney, this year he's is on form.

        Nothing wrong with going with form to pick your 'el Capitan', the trick is to recognise when his form is off and then you leave the newbies behind.

      i'm playing skysports fantasy and i've had rooney captain all season and despite the rest of my team doing nothing i'm doing really well. on fpl it's the opposite. team is all chipping in but thanks to not having rooney, let alone captaining him i'm getting destroyed

          it's depressing. man utd are always on tv too so even when i try and put fantasy out of mind and enjoy the game it's still like getting punched in the face 3 times a week.
          worst fpl feeling since selling torres 4 seasons ago because berbatov was playing derby, then torres scored 2 hattricks in a row and i went from 1st to 3rd in my league. my league was the world that year which is why it was harder to take.
          moral of the story is never buy or sell torres, just pretend he doesn't exist.

        1 big gun defender
        2 cheaper ones for Tuesday
        2 cheaper ones for Wednesday

        If both or one of the Tuesday ones doesnt keep a cleanie, throw in the Wednesday ones?

      They don't have to be cheap/cheap, can be expensive/cheap just make sure they play on different days so you can at least switch since the point of UCL fantasy is having 15 players so u can make subs.

          I learned my lesson when I bought the 3.9m keeper of Fulham last year for a double.

          He played the first game of the double, and never again. Ended up with him sitting on my bench until the end of the season.

      They certainly do, and a word of advise, make sure you get in super early during the longer breaks between rounds in the game, like when you have your unlimited transfers, start from the night the games finish, players skyrocket between rounds.

      Naturally, you are a hardcore fantasy player, you would have done this anyway!

      Rybka's started every single league for Shakhtar so far, Pyatov hasn't played once.

              a) It's obviously not an assist under any reasonable definition of the word 'assist'.

              b) There was a deflection outside the box anyway, so it's not an assist under FPL's definition of the word 'assist' either.

                It's not an assist, the ball was dead.

                What if the ball went out for a corner instead and Arteta scored direct, would that still be an assist for Walcott?

                Even last year, the assist rule didn't mention about the ball going dead and if you wanted to be pedantic about it you could argue the same case if the ball didn't take a significant deflection.

                Maybe it should be reworded to include break in play/balls going dead, but that would be arguing the toss.

                BTW I didn't think the Rooney one last week should have counted, I would much prefer them to limit the number of deflections to 1.
