The second half of Matchday One in our Champions League adventure came to a close last night with both Manchester sides ending affairs on level footing, another healthy smattering of red cards and one manager struggling for air already.

Here’s our take on Wednesday’s eight fixtures, starting with the sides a little closer to home…

Honours Even at the Etihad

Carlos Tevez returned to the bench as Roberto Mancini brought back Edin Dzeko to lead the line against Napoli. Despite their recent goalscoring form, City spurned several chances and had to thank Aleksander Kolarov for rescuing a point against the Italians. The left-back hammered home a free-kick to cement his place as one of the most frustrating Fantasy players in recent memory.

Napoli were content to allow their hosts the majority of possession and hit them on the counter with speed and intent. A Gareth Barry mistake gave Christian Maggio the chance to set up Edinson Cavani as the visitors went ahead just before seventy minutes but Napoli- also making their Champions League debut- will be the happier of the two after a share of the spoils.

Giggs to the Rescue

Sir Alex Ferguson rang the changes for Man United’s trip to Benfica. Perhaps with the weekend game at home to Chelsea in mind, Fergie made eight changes from the side that won 5-0 at Bolton; only Patrice Evra, Jonny Evans and Wayne Rooney kept their place, as the visitors opted for Rooney as a lone forward. A great run and finish from Ryan Giggs just before half time was enough to give United a point in what was regarded as the trickiest tie of their group fixtures.

Benfica’s left winger Nicolas Gaitan caused United problems throughout. Playing as part of a front three, his trickery eventually undone the visitors’ back-four as he set up Oscar Cardozo to put the Portuguese side ahead on twenty-four minutes with a sublime finish. Benfica showed plenty going forward and Cardoza ensured Anders Lindegaard was kept busy with a series of efforts, though United’s experience told in the end and the home side will be happy with a point.

A Real Slog For Madrid

Marcelo will have had the most stories to tell on the plane ride home from Croatia last night. The good tales: Marcelo, and his fellow defenders, picked up a clean sheet. He got a singly recovery point too. Even better reports: calm passing around the box ended with Marcelo teeing up Angel Di Maria in open space to score for Madrid. The unpleasant fables: A bad tackle and a cynical dive in the box saw him pick up two yellow cards and head for an early bath.

Seven points and plenty to talk about for Marcelo, including the fact he’ll miss Ajax at home in two weeks. An unemphatic victory for Madrid but more than enough chances were created.

A Lille Bit Of A Collapse

The French champions were on top of the game in their return to the Champions League. An hour in and two goals to the good courtesy of Moussa Sow (a sumptuous back heel) and Benoit Pedretti (twenty yarder) and signs were looking positive that Joe Cole’s new team would celebrate a perfect beginning.

A Seydou Doumbia striking masterclass brought CSKA Moscow right back into the match, however. Ducking behind the Lille defensive line and then charging through at full tilt salvaged a two-all draw for the Russians leaders and earned the Ivorian pride of place as top-scoring striker. Fernando Torres is currently in second place.

Last Gasp Saloon

Following their 4-3 defeat at Palermo, Gian Gasperini needed to put Inter back on the right track at home to Trabzonspor. The end result was anything but that and leaves the new manager already looking a very solitary figure. Inter lost 1-0 at home to a side that, just a couple of weeks ago, might not have qualified for the Europa League.

One of our hot tips Gabriel Milito could only make do with a substitute’s appearance but the goal after his introduction came at the other end of the pitch from the touch of Ondrej Celuska -the matchday top scorer on 14 points- following a game of pinball in the Nerazzurri box.

Zwei Frei High Five

FC Basel and Oţelul Galaţi played out a highly competitive match. The Romanian champions didn’t roll over when Fabian Frei put the Swiss side ahead as they bode their time before Marius Pena brought the game level after capitalising on a Yann Sommer parry.

Marco Streller, who also assisted the first goal, won Basel a penalty late on in the game which saw Fabian’s much more experienced namesake Alexander Frei convert to close out the scoring with a 2-1 victory for the Swiss contingent. They didn’t end the game with a full side, though; Benjamin Huggel picked up two cards to join Adrian Salageanu (sent off for the aforementioned penalty) on the sidelines.

Bayern Start Off Comfortably

Goals from Toni Kroos (assisted by Frank Ribery) and right-back Rafinha saw Bayern Munich kick off their Champions League campaign at a canter on their visit to Villarreal.

The biggest stories of note from this match-up were the injuries suffered; Mario Gomez failed to come out for the second half and Rafinha only featured after Daniel Van Buyten left the proceedings in the first quarter.

Goalless in Amsterdam

The only game of the night which returned no goals was the Group D tie between Ajax and Lyon. From a Fantasy perspective there was not too much to glean other than the mid-low budget options such as Toby Alderweireld (Ajax) and Bakary Kone (Lyon) grabbing clean sheets as well as a healthy dose of the new “recovery points”. Christian Eriksen, Miralem Sulejmani and Bafetimibi Gomis could have had goals on more fortunate days.

Considering Brunt to Martin Petrov...using my transfer for this week. My only concern is that after this week (home vs Norwich) Petrov plays Arsenal and then Chelsea. I would stick with Brunt but there are question marks about his fitness for this weekend and he hasn't been performing particularly well.

Should I hang fire and bring Petrov in after he has played Arsenal and Chelsea or transfer now ...?

Looking at Taarbt's average position against Newcastle.. he was 2nd furthest forward, just off DJ Campbell. Good prospects!

I've had N'Zogbia from the start and am tempted to bin him for Jarvis.

This saves some money which I can use to upgrade elsewhere.

The only niggle I have is that Villa have such good fixtures coming up. I also have Bent.

Do you think I am doing the right thing?

I reckon its a good choice, Jarvis is in much better form, also has been confirmed fit for QPR. Wolves run is also pretty much just as good as Villas too.

Whatever you do I'd bear in mind Jarvis could rise tonight from looking at fiso

Got to love Neil Warnock -

Neil Warnock has told Adel Taarabt that if he wants a better contract at Premier League Queens Park Rangers, he should join the queue - behind him. The club's manager says the talented Moroccan playmaker is well down the pecking order to get a new deal. "There are plenty before him - me included," he said.

    Right serious debate....

This whole pro-evo Fifa debate, which is better?

Since the days of the N64 I have been a pro-evolution fan. Yeah FIFA has always had the glossy finishes (graphics, licences, good marketing) but for 10 years or more pro-evolution was always the better of the two when it came down to playability. I really don't care much about esthetics, for me it's always been about playability for me.

This year I am stuck with the increasingly difficult issue of deciding is it time to switch to the "dark side" and join the masses or stick with pro-evolution. I argue that without pro-evolution FIFA would not be the game it is today, affectively it copied it and improved 1 or two aspects of the game but has always felt a little off. Scoring goals being the main issue, pro-evo has always been satisfying in that respect.....FIFA on the other hand feels light and fake when it came down to shooting.

I have stuck with many pro-evo glitches, over seen the randomness of the outer shell of the game (transfers/licenses/crazy music/league formats) because I love the playability. Now the newest instalment of FIFA looks set to over take Pro-evo.....or will it?!?!?

    Stick or twist?!?!?

After years of pro evo on the playstation 1 and 2 I bought an xbox last year and with it fifa 11. I think after a year of fifa I may switch back.

I don't like the comlicated create your team fixture and the game itself is all about learning a few tricks, but essentially passing quickly. Just two tricks...a little feint around a defender and the marseille turn usually do the job. But with both doing it all it becomes is a kind of showy off thing instead of a good game.

I loved pro evo's game play and master league and could play it on the computer as well as with others happily. Fifa with the computer is just boring.

so to reverse the question what's the most recent version of pro evo that you've played like? is it worth me popping back to the homeland that I know and love?

Personally I thought that the most recent version was by far the best I have played, especially from the ones that have come out on the PS3.

Other than the odd glitch (nothing major) it's been awesome! The AI could be better but I am told that is being addressed in the up and coming one...so I am very tempted to stick!

For some reason unknown to me I'm taking the armband from Rooney and giving it to Walcott. Not that that helps you with no Arsenal.

Never been sold on Murphy, good player in reality, not so much in fantasy - perhaps Jarvis, Parker or even SWP.

Hard to ignore Ronnpig for the armband. I made the double of mistake of giving Dzeko the armband last week - VC was Arteta - huge gamble, which backfired spectacularly when Roonpig notched a treble.

The one time when the emergency captain would have helped me!!

Is there any kind of FPL app, or do people use the main FPL website on iphone? Does it work?

Thinking of downgrading Ageuro for this week on WC to Dzeko as i reckon he maybe rested and bring Baines in for Kompany.

Then work back in Kompany and Ageuro again in following week....although Aguero looks like he might rise 🙁

Good- bad - indifferent .Prob capt Baines this week

I'm not a fan of this.

I think if you're on a WC you should pick a longer term team (about 5-10 fixtures in). Baines can't be on that list (and if he is fine, but then don't make plans to sub him out).

All-in-all, stick with Aguero/Kompany if that's what you want long-term (or go Aguero/Baines and find the 2.0 somewhere).

Also losing 0.1 on Suarez is silly when you're on a WC and could've taken him out.

        Ya thinking the same

I fear however selling Dzeko (and losing 0.2 for fear of him dropping and not being able to afford my team ) may come back to haunt me in following week when i want Ageuro back if he gets to 11.1

Bloody Suarez dropped midweek and ruined my 0.1 insurance.

Still trying to decided on Ade , Odem or Sturridge .Still going for Ade at minute.

I'm thinking of bringing Berbatov in for RVP this weekend. Surely he must get a game soon and where better to shine than the Old Trafford from the only real threat Chelsea.
Although it might be a bit much having him along side Rooney in my FPL team. What do you think? Am i bonkers. Is it just crazzy enough to work. Im sure nobody else will be thinking of taking such a gamble.

Way to early, and a poor run of fixtures to test him out. Anderson is about the same threat for me and frees up cash.

I quite like your team, it may not do well this week (MAN vs CHE is ruining it) but could do well going forward.

Also - I'd almost rather have Aguero than Rooney - then look at the other options you can get for Dzeko (Adebayor is a nice bet). Potentially saving you enough to get Nani over Valencia?

Fergie likes to play Valencia in the harder matches due to his willingness to track back and help out his full-back (similar to the way Ji Sung Park is used.) I'd worry that he'll be rotated with Nani in the easier games.

    B) Taraabt/SWP + Odemwingie - 4 points spent

    C) Taraabt/SWP + Adebayor - 4 points spent

These are people to bring in? If so, Brunt is doubtful. How is there no points spent for the first one?

If you're so worried why did you give A as an option then? I'd do B personally. I didn't see the QPR game so I'm not sure who the better player is. I think SWP had more chances.

Selling Dzeko and losing that 0.2 is ruining my Wildcard. Bloody city forward rotation and Suarez dropping

I'd just keep Dzeko. They'll all score goals and be rotated, but Dzeko is a lot cheaper than the other two.

        Yep
earlier in week unexpectedly . High ownership is hard to predict the drops

So as i planned to have Aguero longterm i sold Dzeko for fear of not having team i want with 0.0 to play with dzeko on falls list and having many sales

Now Dzeko would appear to be playing at weekend and im 0.1 getting Berra , Jarvis and Dzeko instead of Taylor , Ferguson and Ageuro

        Sickening

SWP got an EA PPI Index of -13 for his 'disgraceful' performance on Monday night!!

How dare he miss the target.

was given MOTM. numerous key passes/crosses that connected and a couple of crosses fizzed intot he danger area that just eluded bothroyd. 1 dodgy moment of finishing was all you can really hold against him.

SWP had 5 attempts on goal, 4 of which missed. If he's getting that many chances, he'll score well imo.

It's sarcasm, didn't manage to transmit that part of it effectively.

Yes he was clearly the best player on the pitch and lays bare the EA PPI Index for what it is.
