Restored to the regular Monday slot, we boil the Gameweek past down to three key elements, lauding the return of a Premier League marksman, recognising the transformation of some Shepherds Bush strugglers and examining just how budget Fantasy talent has played its part in an extraordinary opening to our season.

The Player

Yakubu could barely have chosen a better time to make his return to the Premier League scoresheet. With a pocket of protestors in the car park and general malaise falling over Steve Kean’s tenure at Ewood Park, the Blackburn boss put his faith in the barrel-chested Nigerian and was duly repaid in style.

While Yakubu is undoubtedly carrying some extra pounds, his appetite for goals remains healthy enough to suggest that he could be an unlikely saviour for Kean’s job and Blackburn’s Premier League status. His first goal was subliming accepted – a first time poke from a Junior Hoilett incision through a static Arsenal defence. While that gave Rovers a foothold, the second, a tap in from a driven Steven N’Zonzi cross-shot, was far simpler but arguably more significant in that it gave them the advantage. Blackburn now have themselves a player who will take up goalscoring positions and has the talent to convert them into precious goals. In Hoilett, they also have a twinkling talent that should provide ample feed for a rabid Yak.

As a cheap forward option, Yakubu is clearly on the Fantasy radar. An away trip to a miserly Newcastle, followed by a home clash with City does cast doubt on the wisdom of an early investment, but the Yak’s time may well come soon enough.

The Team

A transfusion rather than a mere injection of new blood appears to have had an instinct impact at QPR. Neil Warnock’s mass acquisition of proven Premier League talent has transformed Rangers into a side widely tipped to struggle, to one capable of dominating a resurgent Wolves in their own lair. The 3-0 win at Molineux demonstrated the value of new skipper Joey Barton, whilst providing more evidence that Shaun Wright-Phillips is still capable of dazzling once he’s given the opportunity and platform to thrive. The free-role up in support of the lone striker has already seen the former England winger prosper and, in just two matches, he has emerged as a viable Fantasy prospect. Behind him, the industry of Alejandro Faulin and Shaun Derry, combined with the wizardry of Adel Taarabt, gives the R’s a midfield that bristles with muscle and creativity.

A new look defence also appears to have gelled. Warnock’s pairing of Danny Gabbidon and Anton Ferdinand know each other from their Upton Park days and have already given Rangers an assured foundation in front of the reliable Paddy Kenny. Armand Traore’s leggy pace down the left has also proved an effective weapon, balanced by Luke Young’s consistency on the opposite flank.

Fantasy managers are re-considering the boosted Loftus Road squad, with budget option Gabbidon and the flourishing Wright-Phillips, surely set for further investment. Taarabt meanwhile, now appears to be on the periphery, although his continued creative spark and set-piece threat will surely bear fruit soon enough.

The Talking Point

While Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero continue to provide heavyweight returns up front, the selection strategy of a bottom heavy Fantasy squad has been boosted further by the recent performances of budget defences – Swansea, QPR and Newcastle.

As we alluded to in Saturday’s Knee Jerk – with five Gameweek’s gone, this tactic has been rewarded handsomely. Clean sheets for Swansea and QPR this weekend, fuelled by more goals for Rooney and Aguero, plus the strike from budget friendly Nathan Dyer – only compounded matters.

Can such a strategy continue to go on thriving? Certainly we expected QPR to start well given their fixtures, while Swansea were always set to be a good option at the Liberty Stadium having conceded so few goals at home last term – the visiting opposition thus far has been obliging however.

Newcastle meanwhile, are compensating for a lack of attacking flair, by tightening further at the back – founded on a sound central midfield pairing in Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye.

Defensive acquisitions from all three of those sides looks a sound option, although it’s debatable just whether QPR and Swansea can maintain form that has seen them notch 3 clean sheets in 5 matches.

So far, mid-price Fantasy options have generally disappointed across the board – the likes of Charles N’Zogbia, Jamie O’Hara, Stephane Sessegnon – the list of failing mid-range Fantasy prospects goes on at length. It remains to be seen if these attacking options can wake from the slumber to provide differentials but, in defensive terms, we can surely expect Jose Enrique, Jose Bosingwa and Vincent Kompany to provide increasing value as the season progresses, while the United defence and the pricey prospect of Leighton Baines, will also be expected to deliver significant profits in due course.

The trick is, to time the rebalancing of our squads accordingly – right now, the bottom heavy Fantasy lineup is winning hands down.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    should i

    A. suarez to aguero - 4pt hit
    B. wait 1 week and do it next week for a 4pt hit as aguero would have gone up and i will have to do an extra tranfer to get cash

right now that extra involves simply doing vorm to ruddy but if he goes up by more than 0.1 it willl involve downgrading a 4.5 def to 4.0.

so is it worth it to wait or should i jut do it now

I would like to get Aguero in for Suarez but if will take a 4pt hit to finance' so I've decided to give Suarez the home fizture against Wolves this week to redeem himself. If nothing special happens he is out and Aguero will be in.

Theres no point taking a 4pt hit in my case especially when the potential of Suarez at home to Wolves exists.

Hi I am doing to Telegraph Fantasy Football League.

I have Lampard in my team and I am getting the impression everybody above me in my mini league has Aguero. My forward two are Rooney and RVP. What are people's view on Lampard this season, should I be patient and wait till he comes good or should I ditch in favour of Aguero. I will need to use two transfer to get Aguero, or do people feel it would be better to keep him and ditch RVP in favour of Aguero.

    Your view will be appreciated.

Get Aguero in, tff is all about 343 and you can easily afford Roo/VP/Aguero without comprising the balance of your team. I would also look at Suarez (cheaper), but most of ppl here would disagree

It's very difficult to make the transition from last season to this one. It does seem after several games though, that Aguerro, Mata and Young are must haves. Arsenal are definitely in trouble. And Lampard is finished as a driving, attacking player.

It looked like the guy who was supposed to be hes biggest competition Anelka, was played as a creative force behind torres. Sturridge was replaced by Lukaku who does not look ready for the premierleague life. I think hell play, the worry is getting subbed at 60-70 every game. But I think he is likely to get these 60-70 every game. Maybe Drogba has something to say about this, but we wont know until hes fit.

To cnkp21, I'm in the Telegraph game too and if I were in your shoes I'd replace Lampard with Aguero and keep Van Persie. Van Persie is more likely to score points than Lamps given he is Arsenal's spearhead. He's also been unlucky not to get a higher points total against Blackburn and Swansea. Lamps plays deeper and I don't think as many chances will come his way given the pace of Sturridge, Mata and Torres up front.

Would you take an 8-Point hit to do RVP -> Adebayor, Dzeko -> Aguero and Baines -> Bosingwa or would you play wildcard and do a few other changes:

    Current Team:
    De Gea-Vorm
    Baines-Brown-JoseEnrique-Simpson-De Laet
    Silva-O’Hara-Brunt-Sinclair-Ferguson
    RVP-Rooney-Dzeko

Wildcard team could look something like this:
    Vorm-Ruddy
    Bosingwa-Brown-JoseEnrique-Simpson-Gabbidon
    Silva-Mata-Arteta-Petrov-Ferguson
    Adebayor-Rooney-Aguero

Would appreciate some advice on the following, I have 0.4M in the bank and 2 free transfers:

    Given Vorm
    Bosingwa Kompany Simpson Brown Senderos
    Silva Brunt Moses N’Zogbia Dyer
    RVP Rooney Suarez

I think I would consider getting rid of N’Zogbia most importantly but who can I bring in under 7.7M, if I chose SWP then I could do Moses to Cabeye?

Or should I just worry about getting rid of N’Zogbia and save a transfer for next gameweek?

Only player I do want is Mata but I don’t know how to get him in!

Bad advice there Doosra, although I like Jonas as a player he is a poor FPL prospect. No set pieces, very rarely assists, goals even rarer. Better prospects for bonus points.

Cabaye, Ben Arfa (when he's back) are better FPL choices. Obertan is just as likely to get you FPL points as Jonas.

Well it's all opinions. But as someone who watches Newcastle regularly I do not think that Jonas is a good FPL prospect. As for Cabaye not troubling the scorers, well he's cracked the bar twice now (one creating an assist) and only for the amazing reflexes of Shay Given he would have had a couple in the last match.

Honestly what is your point? If you dont want to pick a better FPL player than Jonas then dont. If you want a Newcastle midfielder I have listed better options and given my reasons, watching them play would support that.
Once again I'll say Jonas is a good outlet, but he has a real inability to strike the ball cleanly meaning he is a rare goal scorer. He doesnt take set pieces, he doesnt shoot often.
I'm not sure I can make this any plainer.

They were though. I think my point that Utd are flattering to deceive and that they can be got at was proven yesterday. Tehy won't have players scoring wonder strikes every game. Well... hopefully not...

Would you take an 8-Point hit to do RVP -> Adebayor, Dzeko -> Aguero and Baines -> Bosingwa or would you play wildcard and do a few other changes:

    Current Team:
    De Gea-Vorm
    Baines-Brown-JoseEnrique-Simpson-De Laet
    Silva-O’Hara-Brunt-Sinclair-Ferguson
    RVP-Rooney-Dzeko

Wildcard team could look something like this:
    Vorm-Ruddy
    Bosingwa-Brown-JoseEnrique-Simpson-Gabbidon
    Silva-Mata-Arteta-Petrov-Ferguson
    Adebayor-Rooney-Aguero

    .

Ha, I'll be happy with top half to be honest. It's a long season and a pretty small squad. When Tiote goes to the African Nations we'll be pretty fecked. Gosling and Guthrie dont quite match up to him.

Right, guys, my works mini league lead cut down to 2 thanks to not having Aguero.

Got 2 free transfers this week but do I take a points hit and do 3 xfrs or just wildcard it? Was hoping to wait til GW7 to WC but getting itchy now. Your advices appreciated lads and lasses.

    Current team is:

    Given, Vorm
    Baines, Bosingwa, Brown, Kompany, Simpson
    Taarabt, Moses, Surman, Dempsey, Arteta
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko.

I'm in the same position mate, probablay going to wildcard it because if i don't now, i'm gonna take a points hit and probablay another one next week and then play it in GM 7 anyway.

So it's either take point hits and play GM 7
Or not get the price rises in GM7 and play now.

My fear is the price rises but feel like I should keep my WC a bit longer.

I can basically do: Baines to Ferdinand, Dzeko to Aguero and Dempsey to Mata for a 4 pt hit now and have £0.3 in bank (or gamble on waiting til end of week to do it but Aguero rising in price tonight) which I think covers me fine for next 2 GW's.

Oh completely secure. I think Ben Arfa will play just behind the main striker so it should be along the lines of

      __________Best__________
      Jonas____Ben Arfa____Obertan
      ________Cabaye__Tiote____

With Cabaye being the creative player and Tiote doing all the defensive duties. I wouldn't pick him for FPL personally but he is nailed on, no doubt about it.

Yeah he looks pretty good from what I've seen so far, obviously lacking a bit of fitness though. I can see him maybe playing on the left with Jonas switching to the right. Or even challenging Jonas for the LW berth if Obertan plays well.
He does look a good player but I wouldnt pick him for FPL just yet.
