Restored to the regular Monday slot, we boil the Gameweek past down to three key elements, lauding the return of a Premier League marksman, recognising the transformation of some Shepherds Bush strugglers and examining just how budget Fantasy talent has played its part in an extraordinary opening to our season.

The Player

Yakubu could barely have chosen a better time to make his return to the Premier League scoresheet. With a pocket of protestors in the car park and general malaise falling over Steve Kean’s tenure at Ewood Park, the Blackburn boss put his faith in the barrel-chested Nigerian and was duly repaid in style.

While Yakubu is undoubtedly carrying some extra pounds, his appetite for goals remains healthy enough to suggest that he could be an unlikely saviour for Kean’s job and Blackburn’s Premier League status. His first goal was subliming accepted – a first time poke from a Junior Hoilett incision through a static Arsenal defence. While that gave Rovers a foothold, the second, a tap in from a driven Steven N’Zonzi cross-shot, was far simpler but arguably more significant in that it gave them the advantage. Blackburn now have themselves a player who will take up goalscoring positions and has the talent to convert them into precious goals. In Hoilett, they also have a twinkling talent that should provide ample feed for a rabid Yak.

As a cheap forward option, Yakubu is clearly on the Fantasy radar. An away trip to a miserly Newcastle, followed by a home clash with City does cast doubt on the wisdom of an early investment, but the Yak’s time may well come soon enough.

The Team

A transfusion rather than a mere injection of new blood appears to have had an instinct impact at QPR. Neil Warnock’s mass acquisition of proven Premier League talent has transformed Rangers into a side widely tipped to struggle, to one capable of dominating a resurgent Wolves in their own lair. The 3-0 win at Molineux demonstrated the value of new skipper Joey Barton, whilst providing more evidence that Shaun Wright-Phillips is still capable of dazzling once he’s given the opportunity and platform to thrive. The free-role up in support of the lone striker has already seen the former England winger prosper and, in just two matches, he has emerged as a viable Fantasy prospect. Behind him, the industry of Alejandro Faulin and Shaun Derry, combined with the wizardry of Adel Taarabt, gives the R’s a midfield that bristles with muscle and creativity.

A new look defence also appears to have gelled. Warnock’s pairing of Danny Gabbidon and Anton Ferdinand know each other from their Upton Park days and have already given Rangers an assured foundation in front of the reliable Paddy Kenny. Armand Traore’s leggy pace down the left has also proved an effective weapon, balanced by Luke Young’s consistency on the opposite flank.

Fantasy managers are re-considering the boosted Loftus Road squad, with budget option Gabbidon and the flourishing Wright-Phillips, surely set for further investment. Taarabt meanwhile, now appears to be on the periphery, although his continued creative spark and set-piece threat will surely bear fruit soon enough.

The Talking Point

While Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero continue to provide heavyweight returns up front, the selection strategy of a bottom heavy Fantasy squad has been boosted further by the recent performances of budget defences – Swansea, QPR and Newcastle.

As we alluded to in Saturday’s Knee Jerk – with five Gameweek’s gone, this tactic has been rewarded handsomely. Clean sheets for Swansea and QPR this weekend, fuelled by more goals for Rooney and Aguero, plus the strike from budget friendly Nathan Dyer – only compounded matters.

Can such a strategy continue to go on thriving? Certainly we expected QPR to start well given their fixtures, while Swansea were always set to be a good option at the Liberty Stadium having conceded so few goals at home last term – the visiting opposition thus far has been obliging however.

Newcastle meanwhile, are compensating for a lack of attacking flair, by tightening further at the back – founded on a sound central midfield pairing in Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye.

Defensive acquisitions from all three of those sides looks a sound option, although it’s debatable just whether QPR and Swansea can maintain form that has seen them notch 3 clean sheets in 5 matches.

So far, mid-price Fantasy options have generally disappointed across the board – the likes of Charles N’Zogbia, Jamie O’Hara, Stephane Sessegnon – the list of failing mid-range Fantasy prospects goes on at length. It remains to be seen if these attacking options can wake from the slumber to provide differentials but, in defensive terms, we can surely expect Jose Enrique, Jose Bosingwa and Vincent Kompany to provide increasing value as the season progresses, while the United defence and the pricey prospect of Leighton Baines, will also be expected to deliver significant profits in due course.

The trick is, to time the rebalancing of our squads accordingly – right now, the bottom heavy Fantasy lineup is winning hands down.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yeah I know he was dropped for the first time but I can't play that strategy cause my sub defender is playing away at Chelsea. I must reconsider selling him for Simpson and double on New defense or Gabbidon, but he is doubt so that leaves me without choice. Simpson looks like rising tonight too, so my defense is in a mess.

I feel the pain too, he was scheduled for a run out in my team this week but as he didn’t play at the weekend and they won, plus Norwich are already out of the Carling Cup so no chance for injuries there, he is destined for the bench once again I’d say.

For now I see Valencia playing the cup games and having to earn his place back in the side.

Young may even be rested for CL midweek games, as think Fergie rates him more than Nani.

I hope you're right, as I want to get Nani in next week for the Norwich game, but I'm worried cos I think Fergie favours Valencia over Nani, and I can't see Young being dropped, so I think it's very risky.

The CL's groups is so easy so I believe SAF will play Nani and Young in the league. U saw what kind of lineup he had against Benfica, only Rooney starting and that was the toughest fixture in the group. Looks like both are safe for now unless they have dip in form.

agree he is a rotation risk... but he is also the 38million spearhead of citys tile push. tevez is no longer the golden boy and i think of the 3 strikers, aguero will get the most gametime. hes also smashing them in for fun and still settling.

BTW - why Bench Baines @ 8mil. I know it's Citeh away, but that's a lot of cash to bench....

          Either
Baines - Enrique. Then bench Sinclair in my opinion.

Got RVP out for Adebayor to afford Mata in for Brunt. Now hoping that RVP does nothing against Bolton! Anyways, I'm still feeling a bit guilty about dishing RVP out, so is it worth doing a 4pt hit for Dzeko -> Gervinho?

          Lads,

like alot on here - am way behidn in my mini leagues and last week was the last straw so wildcarded in a fit of rage 🙂 Any pointers on this lot?

          Krul - Mignolet
          Bos - Komp - Simpson - Brown - Taylor
          Mata - Silva - Nani - SWP - Dyer
          Rooney - Adebayor - Sturridge

Main concern is no Arse or Pool - but given their form should I be worried?

          Also Sturridge a bit risky?

Need some differentials as my mini league is very Manchester-centric.

Just think over the course of the season I prefer doubling and rotating Newcastle and Sunderland, rather than Swansea.

Swans look decent at the moment, but can see them dropping off later in the season.

I have neither. On a WC though....trying to correct the F-up of selling Silva in gw 2.

I'm just thinking Auguero is like Tevez was last season. Capt material nearly every week. I won't (c) Silva if I have Kun.

If he doesn't play i think I'd prefer someone else to Silva to VC anyway.

Yes Yes Yes!!!!! Team is playing better, Torres is playing better...His (Mata) finishing will need to be tweaked but it's all gonna be fine now for the team...worth it in my mind...Chelsea aren't a bad side and everything will go through him once we decide his best spot is behind the striker (like what VDV did for Spurs last season)....and he has set pieces too...

...but maybe in a week or two things will be a lot more clear...if you're not convinced now...

Everyone says Torres is the future...But Mata is our "Big Bang"...don't underestimate his worth in the team, with the direction AVB is taking us in...his role is even more important to us...don't forget...the team is improving and he's only just joined us...

You're asking for advice regarding a team I support and a player in that team...this is Chelsea...so already you're halfway to agreeing the team is worth investment...so you wanna know if Mata is worth it in that team...and I'm saying he's worth it...so your option isn't whether Mata is your choice but whether Chelsea is your choice...from there you should automatically choose Mata.

It's a different angle to approach your question...surely you've seen him play...the team playing under AVB?

                      Haha...nice...

Just so you know (if you don't already)...we had 19 attempts at goal with 8 on target..Utd only 11 with 6...seeing as we were at OT...does that not make you feel more comfortable knowing most teams (um...Swansea) won't contain such pressure...We were joint top with Spurs in terms of attempts for the weekend...

Mata had 1 attempt and 1 on goal...and had like 8 or something corners...Ivan had 4 attempts at goal with 2 from his head alone...from corners (I recall one being)...and finally confirmed, Mata had 8 corners with 4 being successful...Good case for a position in your team yes?

Wait it out though...I am fueling this because I'm a fan...so take it with a pinch of salt...

Maybe consider downgrading Kompany to a 4.5 and use the money to get young in for Walcott, or long out for adebayor if you can afford it.

I've gOt Enrique and bos and Im thinking they will do for def coverage with other cheaper rotatables.

Mata at home to Swansea. Silva has done much more than nasri, who I still have.

I'm losing too many points to rivals not having Aguero. I need to stop the flow of points, and worry about clawing them back further down the line. Man City also look much better with aguero than dzeko. Over the season he will perform better.

Could work if you have Rooney and maybe p.jones. There are high scoring mids around for less, silva maybe mata etc. But they are both in hot form and (forgive the pun) could burn you.

I will have Rooney and getting Jones next week
Mata Silva and Walcott (who becomes VDV) as my big mids so hopefully they make up for it.

It's a solid team but bit week in the mids. I have brunt and getting annoyed at him but for 6.3 not a great deal around.

I would sit for a week, not much you can do at this stage and brunt is captain of WBA and should be back to fitness this weekend plus still have good fixtures.

Maybe see if Taylor is out for an extended period and sub him out.

If you need to knee jerk maybe dzeko or Suarez to adebayor or even sturridge and use the free cash to upgrade brunt.

Cheers mate, I tend to agree. Brunt and Cabaye are the spots I'm least sure about.

There just seems to be a lack of good alternatives in the same price range..

Yeah woodgate is solid if he stays fit. If you don't have Vorm, Rangel could be a decent shout.

I would maybe got gabbidon, he's 4.0 plus in a solid QPR team ATM and looks fIrly secure.
