Owen Hargreaves steals the show as Man City ditch holders Birmingham. Steven Gerrard returns to the Liverpool fold, though Kenny Dalglish is quick to play down the hype. Chelsea suffer a couple of injury worries in their derby win over Fulham, while Rio Ferdinand looks in line for a weekend return as United go to Stoke. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles:

Andre Villas-Boas played down the possibility of a spell on the sidelines for Petr Cech. The Chelsea keeper was subbed off in last night’s Carling Cup win over Fulham after suffering a head injury in a collision with Orlando Sa. With Hilario also out, it left Ross Turnbull as the only keeper available to Villas-Boas and although Turnbull helped the Blues through to the fourth round after a penalty shoot-out, Villas-Boas seemed positive over Cech’s prognosis:

Petr went for a scan in the hospital and he’s okay. He felt a little bit dizzy from the early concussion at half-time. We decided, and he decided as well, it was better not to take risks.

Daniel Sturridge was also taken off after hurting his knee in the process of scoring a disallowed goal and the Chelsea boss also had news on the forward:

The ligaments are okay. If he misses one (game), it won’t be more than that.

To further add to Chelsea’s woes, Alex was sent off and will miss the weekend home clash with Swansea.

Yossi Benayoun took to twitter yesterday to reveal he will be out for “a week or so” after suffering a strain in Arsenal’s Carling Cup win over Shrewsbury. The Israeli will miss this weekend’s game with Bolton as well as a Champions League clash with Olympiakos. Arsene Wenger will be hoping the midfielder will be available for the following weekend’s North London derby against Spurs.

Steven Gerrard returned to the Liverpool first-team for the first time in six months last night. The skipper featured in the Carling Cup win over Brighton but, while Kenny Dalglish was delighted, he was quick to downplay expectations and will continue to ease Gerrard back into action:

He has had a few disappointments along the way and just to get 20 minutes will have given him a lift. We will manage the situation as diligently as we have done to get him this far. We want the same as what he wants but we need to be careful with him. We won’t get carried away with the fact he is back for 20 minutes, but it’s great for everybody.

Martin Kelly also returned from a hamstring strain to give Dalglish a boost at right-back ahead of the home showdown with Wolves on Saturday.

Owen Hargreaves and Kolo Toure made their first starts of the season for Man City last night. The former may have hogged the headlines for his superbly taken opener in the 2-0 win over Birmingham, but it was the City forward selection that was of most interest to Fantasy managers- Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez started, which bodes well for owners of Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko ahead of the weekend clash with Everton.

The Everton-West Brom clash saw both managers field strong sides. David Moyes gave starts to new boys Royston Drenthe and Denis Stracqualursi and it was the hosts who prevailed with a 2-1 win at Goodison Park. The Toffees are now on a five-match unbeaten run, though the same can’t be said for Roy Hodgson’s side right now- the Baggies have lost five of their seven games in all competitions this season and are struggling to spark.

Rio Ferdinand is on course to appear for Man United this weekend. The centre half has returned to full training this week and with Chris Smalling sidelined for a fortnight with a groin strain, Ferdinand would slot in at centre half once again, with Phil Jones moving to right-back for the away trip to Stoke.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    I'm a dick-ish dick!

I made a completly rookie mistake and premeturlly pulled the trigger on my transfers on sat night in a hope to catch the price rises. I took a 4 point hit for the following:

    Walcott >>>> Mata
    Dzeko >>>> Adebayor

Both transfers could have been avoided, neither could be deemed "necessary". Now Sturridge is injured and I had high hopes for him, I have a decent bench but no one primed for this GW.

So the lesson to be learnt here, not all band wagons need to be jumped on. An extra 0.2 in the bank does not equate to any additional pointage (yes it helps in the long run but it's not the be all and end all). Also another valuable lesson is if your players are likely to play mid week in whatever competition....hold fire!

Thanks for the lesson, I actually did my transfers for Mata and Adebayor early and am happy with the 0.2!

I had the armband on Mata all week, but since Tevez and Balotelli started last night I've handed it on to Dzeko. Yourself? How's the team looking?

At the begining of the week I felt good about my team, as the week has progressed I am getting the feeling that I may have gone the wrong way with my team.

I am happy with Adebayor and Mata but I am thinking that I didn't choose wisely with regards to who I shipped out:

            Given (Vorm)
            Kompany Brown Bosingwa Enrique (Simpson)
            Mata Young Silva (Walters) (Dyer)

Think my team is looking okay for this week. Although ive thought that the klast few weeks and getting some awful scores!

    Given
    Brown Simpson Enrique (Ward, Shawcross)
    Nasri Bale Young Duff/Brunt
    Rooney(c) Suarez(vc) Agbonlahor

Not sure who to play out of Duff(wba away) and Brunt(FUL HOME)

Currently have it on Duff because of Brunts poor form and will probably be doing Duff to Barfa and some other transfers next week with my 2 frees.

No transfers a good idea? Would like Mata but dont want to get rid of Young or Nasri!

Interestingly Brunt took a peno last night with both Dorrans and Odemwingie on the pitch. If he's the new peno taker it could sway your thinking......

if you want Mata do Bale - Mata and Agbonlahor - Best

Bale is overpriced this season and only scored points in around 6 out of 28 matches last season anyway, how he won POTY I will never know

Cheers for the responses lads. I aint selling Suarez though he is pools number 1 striker and will score plenty of goals imo. Not sure when Pool are playing but maybe its Sun or Mon?

Thanks simsey that is interesting alright. If he plays he could score well alright. Still 50/50 between him and Duffer. Yeah Bale isnt doing much but he was unlucky in last game not to get a few point so will hang onto him for a game or two anyway. Bale to Mata might be a good call alright Im not certain about Best's starting role though as Newc have loads of forwards.

    A.Cole > Bosingwa
    Osman > Silva

For a 4 point hit? Is it really worth it to trade a Chelsea defender for another Chelsea defender? Getting rid of Osman will leave me 9.4 so need to free up 0.5 somewhere.

    A few questions I'm pondering.

    1. Young or Nani?
    2. Who to transfer in for Brunt (in the same price bracket)
    3. I have Cabaye - will Ben Arfa's return limit his potential?
    4. How much longer do I wait for Suarez to come good?

      1. Young
      2. I would say Cabaye or HBA but that doesn't help
      3. Perhaps not, but HBA might be the better option nevertheless
      4. Re-assess over the international break.

      1. Who knows - both are equal options in my eyes. I'll say Nani cos he's cheaper
      2. Keep Brunt
      3. Ben Arfa probably wont limit Cabayes potential but with Cabaye its simple. He was NEVER a goalscoring midfielder. He had one season where he scored goals at Lille, 7/8 of which were pens and the others were goals for a team that were running away with the french title. He will never score like that in England unless he plays for Man U or Man City.
Ben Arfa is a more dangerous goal threat
      4. He has 3 home games in his next 4, and his 2 games after that are WB (A) and swa (H). If you dont like the look of that swap him out.

    B. O'Hara -> Mata
    C. Baines -> Kompany

    Krul
    Jones - Bosingwa - Baines
Ben Arfa - Young - Mata - Silva
    Gervinho - Adebayor - Zamora

Vorm - RTaylor - De Laet - Dyer

Any ideas? I know people will say to drop Baines... but Everton are getting better and he always can bring in an assist or goal.

Also, Zamora or Agbonlahor ? Same price, both good fixtures to come... the one I will pick will probably mean the other one will score a hat trick 🙂

The team is ok, not much can be done with out taking a hit to improve it.

It would take a 4 or 8 point hit to improve it which is not worth it as it would involve a striker out but all of yours have good fixtures.

I have both Brunt and Sturridge atm, and am worried about them missing this GW. It seems sturridge will play no part which means i get a choice of:

Berra (liv), Boyata (ars) and Dyer (che)

coming off the bench... possibly two if Brunt is rested after playing 120 (which i dont think will happen).

Is it worth a 4 point him to bring in S or R Taylor for Berra, or should i hold off?

    Thanks guys.

Defoe could hardly get a game when adebayor wast there, its just cos he links up ok with ade that he is still in.

As soon as VDV is back he will be a dwarf again (get it - he will never see sunlight - and he's small...hilarious)

Adebayor over Defoe for me, I suspect Adebayor and VdV up front will be a mroe likely switch for Harry than Defoe and Pav or Defoe and VdV.

Feel like I've earned a rate my team today, you gotta put the time in 😉 I have a couple questions I need answering:

    Ruddy
    Bosingwa Kompany S.Taylor
    Brunt Walcott Mata Jarvis
    Rooney Dzeko(c) Adebayor

    Given Sinclair Brown De Laet

    Start Jarvis or Sinclair?
    Dzeko or Mata as Captain?
    Ruddy or Given?

I guess Jarvis, but through gritted teeth.
Dzeko - although I'm going for Rooney
Ruddy - there's not much in it but there should be some save points there.

I don't think that's worth a WC but would help to see the rest of your team. Holt has a good fixture, Moses might get something, Baines also might pick something up - none of those transfers feel urgent enough to WC to me.

I'd be happy playing Raylor and Simpson even though it's a bit risky, I'll definitely play Ward if he's OOP again and we should get an indication from Mick McCarthy.

      Close, not thrilled with either.

Silva is essential, Taylor is currently injured (dont know how long), Hoilett and Petrov are both 50/50 (ok picks but not great) really and suarez and enrique both solid.

SO that was no hellp at all i guess...
