We’ve another bumper set of Scout Notes this afternoon, with eight games played yesterday. Robin Van Persie returned to form, while Frank Lampard cut a lonesome figure on the Chelsea bench as the Blues cruised against Swansea. Luis Suarez rewarded the patience of his Fantasy owners and Demba Ba opened his account with a three-goal haul at home to Blackburn. Stoke demonstrated their obstinate home streak against Man United, while Nani served a reminder of his consistency with another strong performance as the champions stay ahead of Man City on goal difference. Here’s the rundown on yesterday’s fixtures:

Lampard Plays No Part
Aside from the red card that will leave Fernando Torres sidelined for the next three league games, the main talking point from the Chelsea game was the omission of Frank Lampard. Although the Blues’ 4-1 win was the third time in four games Lampard has failed to make the starting XI, the Swansea game was the first time he failed to appear from the bench. His only start -last week at Old Trafford- saw him subbed off at half-time and it looking increasingly likely that the 11.8 FPL midfielder will continue to be a peripheral figure under Ander Villas-Boas. Lampard did played 76 minutes in the Carling Cup clash against Fulham midweek and this would have played a part in his manager’s thinking, but it’s clear he no longer offers the guaranteed game time as his time as a Fantasy force continues to rapidly diminish.

Lita Keeps His Place
Leroy Lita kept his place in the Swansea lineup for the trip to Stamford Bridge after a goal and assist last week, though Danny Graham replaced the former Reading man just before the hour mark. Despite the defeat, Brendan Rodgers can take solace in the fact that the Swans are starting to find the net with more regularity- having drawn four blanks previous to last week’s win over West Brom, this is the second game in a row that they have found the net.

Van Persie Turns Up at Last
Robin Van Persie’s start to the season has been a source of frustration for Fantasy managers. Just once goal in his first five game had seen the Dutchman’s price slightly dip to 11.9 but a brace against Bolton offered plenty reassurance. The Gunners host (SUN, STK, WBA) over their next four fixtures and Van Persie will surely see an upturn in Fantasy owners as he starts to resemble the consistent option he proved in the latter part of last season.

Coyle Tries a 4-5-1
Owen Coyle rolled out a 4-5-1 formation for Bolton’s trip to the Emirates. David N’Gog was given the nod as the Trotters lone forward, with Kevin Davies surprisingly benched. N’Gog lasted just twenty minutes, though, replaced by Davies after a clash of heads with Laurent Koscielny. Gary Cahill missed out through illness, allowing David Wheater a chance in central defence but the former Middlesboro man saw red after pulling back Theo Walcott with the winger clear on goal. Coyle chose to leave Stuart Holden out despite the midfielder’s Carling Cup first-team return, though the Trotters lacked any sort of cutting edge, with just three shots on target all game.

Dzeko Disappoints
Roberto Mancini reinstalled Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko to the Man City starting XI for the visit of Everton. Many Fantasy managers handed Aguero the armband and while the Argentine picked up an assist in the 2-0 win, the Bosnian failed to fire and was withdrawn before the hour mark. Replacement Mario Balotelli showed City’s strength in depth by grabbing the opener within ten minutes of his introduction. Dzeko’s price has dropped 0.2 since his four goal haul in Gameweek three at Spurs.

Moyes Keeps Faith
Despite their midweek Carling Cup tie with West Brom going to extra time, David Moyes made just one change to his starting XI at City. Phil Neville returned to the fold and the visitors once again proved tricky opponents for Mancini’s side, with Jack Rodwell given the task to man mark David Silva in the 2-0 loss. Louis Saha returned as a sub late on but their hosts extra class and freshness proved too much for the Toffees in the end.

Suarez Shows His Class
Many Fantasy managers had lost faith in Luis Suarez after the Liverpool forward had drawn three consecutive blanks in the lead up to yesterday’s home game with Wolves. The Uruguayan had fallen 0.3, sitting now at 9.4- lower than his original FPL starting price- but those who remained patient with the forward were rewarded, as a goal and a dazzling display in the 2-1 win over Wolves served reminder of his undoubted brilliance.

Wolves Go 4-5-1
Mick McCarthy was another manager who tried 4-5-1 yesterday. Wolves’ two straight defeats saw Big Mick looking to tighten things up and with Steven Fletcher still not 100% recovered from a groin strain, Kevin Doyle was fielded as a lone front man, with Steven Ward returning to left-back. Wolves only threatened when Fletcher was introduced in the second half and it was he who scored as the visitors breached a nervy home defence that have picked up just one clean sheet so far this season. With (NEW, wba, SWA) up next, McCarthy will be desperate to bounce back from this, his third straight league defeat.

Pardew’s Forward Boost
Newcastle climbed to fourth after a home thrashing of Blackburn. While the season so far has been all about a defensive solidity that has offered plenty of cut-price Fantasy potential from Alan Pardew’s side, yesterday saw Newcastle thrive as an attacking force.Demba Ba is slowly finding his feet following his summer move to St James’ Park and it took a visit from Steve Kean’s Blackburn to make him feel firmly at home- a hat-trick in the 3-1 win served a reminder of his ability, while the Premier League return of Hatem Ben Arfa was a timely boost ahead of a run of fixtures (wol, TOT, WIG, stk, EVE) that sees them play three home games in the next five.

Hoilett Shines Again
David Hoilett was –once again- Blackburn’s stand-out player as Rovers fell to another defeat. Kean’s side are now in the bottom three but the young Canadian reminded Fantasy managers he’s continuing to perform in a struggling side. Yesterday’s goal was his first of the new campaign but Hoilett has also grabbed three assists this season- so far he has failed to score or assist in only two of his six appearances.

Roy’s Best Defence
West Brom’s goalless draw with Fulham means the Baggies have picked up two clean sheets already- the same number as the whole of last season. A tightening up at the back seems to be detrimental to their threat going forward though; Roy Hodgson’s side offered goalscoring promise in their opening two games against Man United and Chelsea but have found the net just once in the following four fixtures- a worrying sign for Fantasy owners of Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long.

Another Draw for Jol
Bobby Zamora and Damien Duff both missed out due to illness and personal reasons respectively as Fulham picked up another draw. Martin Jol fielded a front pairing of Moussa Dembele and Orlando Sa but despite the Cottagers 57% and 18 shots to West Brom’s 9, they couldn’t find a way past Ben Foster. While Fulham failed to fire up front, there was more promise at the back as Brede Hangeland and co picked up their first clean sheet since the opening day of the season.

Stoke’s Home Comforts
Although Man United had to make do without Wayne Rooney and saw Javier Hernandez subbed off after five minutes, there’s no getting away from Stoke’s home solidity. Their opening three games at the Britannia (CHE, LIV, MUN) have seen them concede just one goal and remain undefeated. Tony Pulis’s defence have proved to be virtually to be fixture-proof when it comes to home fixtures and a battling performance suggested last week’s defeat at Sunderland was nothing more than a temporary blip.

Nani Steps Up
It’s three goals and three assists in his last four games now for Nani. As the season unfolds, the Portuguese winger continues to offer a greater consistency than Ashley Young on the other flank for Man United- Young has picked up one assist in his last three games for the champions. With Rooney and Hernandez both pretty much out of the picture yesterday, Nani again returned for his Fantasy owners and with a home clash against Norwich next week, he’ll no doubt be looked upon as a strong captaincy as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side look to return to winning ways.

Latics Lose Again
Wigan recorded their third straight loss yesterday, going down 2-1 at home to Spurs. An unbeaten start against the three promoted sides has been somewhat dampened, though a favourable run of fixtures will offer hope to Roberto Martinez’s side. Their next six games (BOL, new, FUL, wol, BLA, sun) is one of the kindest upcoming runs and the Latics will need to bounce back quickly if they are to avoid being dragged into a battle at the bottom.

Modric on the Right
Jermain Defoe missed out due to illness for Spurs, meaning Harry Redknapp opted for a 4-2-3-1 at Wigan. Sandro came into the centre alongside Scott Parker and with Rafael Van der Vaart operating behind Emmanuel Adebayor, Luka Modric tucked in on the right, with Gareth Bale reverting to his usual left wing berth. Regardless of their changes, it was a third straight win for Redknapp’s side as they warned up for next week’s derby with Arsenal in strong form.

Judging by what I was reading on the internet yesterday evening, I could be forgiven for thinking De Gea had an absolute blinder against Stoke.

Turns out he made one good save.

The one from Wilkinson was excellent. The one from Walters was awful, lucky that it didn't go in. Crouch's shot just hit him at point blank range, and that was it.

It was a routine save, positioning wasn't great either - too close to the near post. Made a mess of it and was lucky it didn't go in.

i guess if rooney is to be benched until the liverpool game, and packs off cowboys are firing of their wildcards in the intl break, it would be the wisest choice to take him out.

but only if there is a confirmation of this

(why would he risk playing rooney at home to norwich though?)

Yeah.. As far as this story has been developing. It's not only the injury is serious or not but also the chance for SAF to play or not play him.. I'm the one who doubt (if injury is true) why would SAF risk Rooney in Norwich game.

There's a few strange conspiracy theories about this Rooney injury. People assume SAF will keep him out of Norwich so he can pull him out of the internationals. I think Rooney probably has a say in if he plays for england or not... Also, The important thing for me is Rooney saying on twitter he hopes to be back on tue... so he must have talked to medical staff etc who don't think it's too serious. Ignore SAF's comments to the press, he'll line up against Norwich imo.

    Which of these to do?

    A) Rooney, Dzeko, Nasri------>Berbatov, Aguero, Silva
    B) Rooney, Arteta, Nasri------>Silva, Nani, 9.8mill striker??

I already have Young so was thinking of going with A today before any price rises, could have done B yesterday with Hernandez before price rising of silva and nani

best option out of the following:-

    Dzeko/Arteta -> Drogba/Anderson
    Dzeko/Taarbat -> Drogba/N'Zonki or Tiote

    Team so far is:-

    Foster, Vorm
De Laet, Berra, Kompany, Brown, Hutton
    Arteta, Taarbat, Mata, Nasri, Dyer
    RVP, Adebayor, Dzeko

any suggestions on other possible transfers, got 2 FT's this week, all suggestions welcome...

Also, whats with Foster dropping in value? 2 CS's in 3 games, yet losing value... Nasri and Dzeko dropped too, Dzeko the better one to drop?

I would be suprised if QPR kept less clean sheets than liverpool.

NANI obviously the one ur on about

Rooney wont play vs adebayor in form (even if you dont rate adebayor this is another strengthening move.

Doesn't Enrique have a run of Norwich, Swansea and West Brom coming up?

I rate Ade highly, bought him in as soon as he appeared in the game but is it really worth taking Rooney out when he will only miss one game?

They do with everton/MU at one side and chel at other....not to mention to suspensions/injuries and general lack of undertsanding they have at the back.

If i dropped rooney i would do it until GW10 to get the liverpool man city games over with and thats about when rvps fixtures get messy so straight swap.

The other option im looking at is.....

A rule for me is dont put a player in my team that costs 9mill or more if i dont trust them to be captain...suarez...i dont trust.

Unfortunately every liverpool game has been on bfbs. Suarez movement is good but very little else and a booking troll.

I have rooney aguero and rvp up front. All far better than your suarez. Wouldnt be suprised if ur team is doing sh*t coz u talk rubbish incessantly.

i agree that he makes me very nervous when he plays - am just looking at the run of fixures - they will need to travel to germany to play bayern on tuesday. He will then travel to Argentina to train with the national team the following week - i'm just wondering if this makes him more vulnerable to being rested?
I feel RVP might outscore him next few gameweeks and want him but then again with rooney out, perhaps i should get some united cover? Conundrum!

Don't love Arsenal's chances next few. As an Arsenal fan we struggle at home to teams like Stoke. They'll park the bus, concede the wide areas and frustrate us. GW 11 might be a good time for RvP, but until then I'm unsure.

Aguero hasn't been rested so far and he's been playing in Asia. Seems untouchable at the moment.

I've got Nani, Mata, Nasri, Dzeko, Ade, RVP 8)

Enough to upgrade Nasri to Silva once i get a free transfer. Need to figure out what to do with Dzeko first.

It is my priority this week. Can't afford Kun, won't be going for a City forward, Kompany and Nasri (soon to be Silva) should be enough for now. Not many options around Dzeko' price. Looking at Anelka or maybe Bendtner. That will give me an all Arsenal strikeforce! Odemwingie is another option.

I'm seriously considering © Aguero over Rooney (if fit). Norwich will set up like they did at the bridge i think, don't think it'll be the cricket score people predict. Where as - Blackburn can't seem to defend.

What's the most GWs you ever plan in advance when bringing a player in? This is without taking WC into consideration.

Even if he doesn't start, he can still score a goal or six coming from the bench.
So far he seems like Mancini's little favourite out of the 4 strikers, and with Tevez and Dzeko playing like crap in their last games it is likely he will start.

Aguero can't be classed as a band wagon.

A bandwagon IMO is a player who scores big in a single GW, whereas Aguero is showing form and decent consistency and is good value even at his high price.

      A bandwagon would be Ba.

We looked a lot better going forward yesterday, RVP, Walcott, Arteta and Ramsey were all very good. Ramsey was involved in all 3 goals and produced two through balls to send Theo clear. But... we were playing Bolton.

Guys, had a decent-ish week for a change but still about 145 points behind the leader of my mini league.

My Midfield & forwards are -

    Silva, Nani, Brunt, Jarvis, Moses.
    Rooney, Suarez & Adebayor.

Is it worth me getting rid of Rooney for Aguero/RVP. for a 4 point hit?

No doubt I'll want to get Rooney back in at some point(probs sooner rather than later) but im going to have to get him back in at a 0.3 million loss, does this matter?

And would you make the transfer?

    Afternoon,

Currently deciding who to put in for Dzeko:

    1) Fletcher
    2) Adebayor
    3) Ba
    4) Best

Any thoughts? Have Cabaye already .. no spurs coverage and S Ward from Wolves. Fletcher likely to start next week?

to be honest they're all good options for their prices.
fletcher deserves to start seeing as he actually knows where the goal is but who knows. my guess is he will and he simply was never going to be ready to play 90 yesterday as he's just back from injury

On a side note, I'd like to acknowledge Elder Priest's (jamsiep) fulfillment of his 'debt' re: his grav change pursuant to the Chels/Utd game.

Although there have been whispers of multi-accounting and though he generally loses his mind on all things Utd related ... he nonetheless completed his obligation.

I appreciate that. I know it wasn't easy. And I think I speak for all concerned when I say that the Utd crest just didn't look right next to his name 😉

All things considered: he's a man of his word.

More - much more - than can be said of many others here ...

Thanks, James -- see ya' Gameweek 24? 🙂

btw in case you misunderstood me last night i wasn't necessarily saying it wasn't a pen on hernandez, all i said is i don't think it was as clear as the scandalously ignored young one as i thought hernandez was looking and waiting for whatever contact he got, therefore making it a bit softer/less clear cut. based on precedent the ref should have given it. my issue is that precedent, i think it's far too easy to win a penalty like that and then the defender has to be sent off too. all you do is get goalside, slow down a bit and the moment you get so much as a skim (which would hardly knock you off balance normally, let alone make you fall to the ground) you go down and the opposition is usually then crippled with a penalty and a red.
a perfect example was lucas's 110minute penalty last season, gets goalside, waits for eboue, put himself on the floor. penalty. that's far too easy, not all contact should be a foul

It's all good. I understand that the reason it likely wasn't called was that the ref is thinking the way you describe ... possibly he thought Woodgate got more (some?) of the ball than he did, etc.

Tough for the ref to make that call, as you say, in the opening minutes of the game -- even if it's 'true'.

Ultimately, I'm not livid about it as it happened so early that Utd should have been able to overcome it. The fact that they didn't gives credit to the way Stoke played and concern over how Utd play when their 'B team' is in.

But, to a point you weren't making but ABUs wer:, if those calls were at OT, the crows would be shrieking about 12th man. Those calls made for Stoke at home show that everyone gets a touch o' the green sometimes, imo.
