Not surprisingly, Robin Van Persie leads our gameweek 8 Captain Poll, although the margin between him and second placed David Silva is perhaps not as comfortable as expected.

By his standards, the Dutchman was anonymous at White Hart Lane in the 2-1 defeat last time out and a quiet Euro Qualifier for Holland against Sweden in midweek did little to convince that Van Persie is going into the gameweek with form. With struggling Sunderland travelling sheepishly to the Emirates, Arsenal’s skipper and talisman will surely be looking to boost his 3 league goal tally and carry the Gunners to a much-needed victory.

As for Silva, his class and form is undoubted. The impish Spaniard has been a mesmerising force in City’s midfield, pulling tricks from his repertoire to wriggle free of tackles and, more often than not, provide a killer end product to help feed City’s ravenous strikers. Alex McLeish may have plans to halt Silva’s ascendency as the Premier League’s outstanding performer this weekend; the odds are stacked against the Villa boss succeeding.

Behind these two, Wayne Rooney finds himself in an unaccustomed third spot in our poll, a position no doubt compounded by a testing trip to Anfield that arrives off the back of his dismissal in Montenegro. Rooney’s reaction to last week’s events will surely decide his returns from Saturday’s early kick-off – the Anfield faithful will be on his back, greeting every challenge that comes clattering his way. Rooney’s owners will hope that he’ll deliver an early reminder of his quality and form to help rid United of the ghosts of last season’s 3-1 defeat.

While Dirk Kuyt claimed a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last term, it was Luis Suarez who was the architect of United’s downfall. The Uruguayan finds himself fourth in our poll, with memories of his performance still fresh. United will hope to welcome back defensive reinforcements in order to counter the movement and trickery of Suarez but, so far, the voting indicates that confidence in the United backline has yet to be restored – the expectation is goals at both ends.

Sergio Aguero’s fitness remains a concern and keeps him bubbling under in fifth place – should he be fit to face Villa, there’s little doubt that he will be set to be the major damage dealer. Noises from the City camp so far indicate that he may well sit out after a futile spell with the Argentina squad.

Daniel Sturridge, Rafael Van der Vaart and Frank Lampard offer strong differential options. It’s interesting to see that Lampard’s hat-trick at the Reebok last time out has immediately put him above the pecking order over Juan Mata when it comes to our poll. Mata is yet to deliver a return on the same scale as Lampard’s haul at Bolton – the Spaniard is surely set to be a slow burning Fantasy asset; we could yet see further evidence of that when Everton visit the Bridge this weekend.

With just over 970 votes registered so far, there’s plenty of time for opinion to shift. Visit the middle column of the homepage to throw your hat into the ring before end of play tomorrow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on Gervinho as a cut-price RVP alternative/differential?

i have Wilkinson from Stoke as my 5th defender, for the past two games he logged more than 80 minutes. Is his place assured ? shall i play him over Simpson or enrique ? Stoke as it home to fulham. While the two others face Tottenham and Man UTD which i fany to score.
Or will he burn me with a brief substituation at the end of the game ?
    Replies are highly appreciated.

      Not sure.

Stoke have 4 CBs in Huth, Shawcross(C), Woodgate and Upson. Woodgate is not in their Europa League squad - so if fit will play most PL games I reckon alongside the Stoke captain.

Maybe Wilkinson at RB or even Shotton. Huth has been complaining at playing RB. Also Higginbotham is near a return as well.

      Huth - Shawcross - Woodgate - Wilson.

    my squad:

    Given/Ruddy
    Olssen/Enrique/Simpson/Walker/Baines
    Nani/Silva/Brunt/Sinclair/Taarabt
    Rooney/Best/Adebayor

i don't like Baines in your team, awful fixtures coming his way. Brunt is also nursing an injury.
Taarabt also didn't produce so far and no in the right set of mind.
As i see you have no arsenal coverage, maybe either:
Taarabt to ramsey and/or Baines to Kompany.

im not convinced with Ramsey, a few people on here have said he's not been playing that well, and Arsenal are just terrible at the moment, im not confident of them beating Sunderland.

who else is a good option 2 replace Brunt?

I'll have 8.7 if i bring in ShawX for Baines.

Yeah, but Ramsey is cheap as chips for a guranteed Arsenal midfielder who likes to get forward. Say what you will about Arsenal's form, they are still scoring goals!

Haha...just found this piece that pretty much sums up the start to my season...If anyone feels this represents their start please raise your hand:

Alright, analasis. Oh, it smells like carrots and throw up. Oh, that could gag a maggot. It smells like hot sick. Ass and a dead carcasss. Oh, even stink would say that stinks. You know when you go in an apartment building and you smell other peoples cooking on each floor, and you go 'what are they cookin?' That plus crap."

Now that I know how low it's gone...perhaps things will improve?

I've captained Silva. With Aguero and Balotelli out and his magnificent form in the Scotland game, I reckon he's going to have more goalscoring responsibility for this one.

I've captained Silva most weeks, mind, I'm a huge fan. Best player in the Premier League so far for me.

As a Spurs fan, I'm not too sure VDV's fantasy potential is as good as it was last season. Now Parker and Modric are glued to the middle of midfield he's been pushed out to the right half the time and isn't as happy or effective there. Benching Defoe and playing him behind Adebayor would be ideal but Harry loves Defoe so that won't happen a lot. I'd pick Mata over VDV for the season.

The only Spurs players I'm really backing from a fantasy perspective are Friedel, Assou-Ekotto and Adebayor.

I'd save the transfer for next GW or use it somewhere else, Liverpool have a good record against Man U and I can see Suarez grabbing one, so I'm keeping him in my squad. You could put in Dzeko for this week and then put Suarez back in if you don't back him though?

If you had to pick one of these option for the next few weeks which one would you choose:

A: Suarez, Ade & Arteta (or similar price mid)
    B: Gabby, Ade, Adam
    C: Gabby, Suarez & 9.5 mid

C: if you can stretch it to 9.7 and get VDV or 9.6 and get Nasri, but it depends on the rest of the team

    Having spent the entire Internatinal break pondering transfers, still need some input! Team for GW 8 is;

    Ruddy (Vorm)
    Boswinga Ward R.Taylor (Simpson Enrique)
    Young Nani Silva Henry (Ferguson)
    Aguero Rooney Adebayor

    The high priced attack is coming back to haunt me! I've one free and so was thinking of going for (assuming Aguero and Ade are injured);
Aguero, Adebayor, Young, Henry > RVP Suarez Ramsey Petrov

It's a 12pt hit but I can see RVP (C), Ramsey and Petrov softening that blow.

Or the alternative would be to take an 8pt hit, bench Henry (to be transferred next gameweek), play Enrique and hope Rooney's mind is elsewhere...

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Afternoon all.

De Laet is excess baggage. Should I bin him for Shawcross? Seems a bit of a no-brainer eh? I would quite like Woodgate, though his injury record is putting me off a bit.

That would mean my defence would be Bosingwa, Ward, Shawcross, Warnock and S.Taylor

Want rid of Ward fairly soon, had enough of Wolves's shittery.

I'd rather have Woodgate than Shawcross! Those 4 defs should be good enough for you, I'd get a basement pricer for Ward when you get rid of him.

I was just having a good gawk at their respective stats - not much between them at all. So might go for Woodgate for the sentiment and cash saving. However Shawcross does seem more favoured by bappage so dunno. I'll have a think.

I've been looking at N Taylor (SWA) but not sure on that choice yet...also in place of Ward...I think you should try Woodgate rather...Shawcross may not be quite worth that price tag with money available for other attacking changes later on...just a thought.

      1) Suarez is a high risk in my opinion.
He played In Paraguay full 90 minutes on Wednesday morning and than he has the long hours of travel. He will surely start but will he be 100 % sharp ?
Mata hasn't produced so far as well and if everton goes with the same defensive formation they had against Liverpool, they will be hard to crack.
      I would look elsewhere.
      2) roll the dice and hope for the best
