Not surprisingly, Robin Van Persie leads our gameweek 8 Captain Poll, although the margin between him and second placed David Silva is perhaps not as comfortable as expected.

By his standards, the Dutchman was anonymous at White Hart Lane in the 2-1 defeat last time out and a quiet Euro Qualifier for Holland against Sweden in midweek did little to convince that Van Persie is going into the gameweek with form. With struggling Sunderland travelling sheepishly to the Emirates, Arsenal’s skipper and talisman will surely be looking to boost his 3 league goal tally and carry the Gunners to a much-needed victory.

As for Silva, his class and form is undoubted. The impish Spaniard has been a mesmerising force in City’s midfield, pulling tricks from his repertoire to wriggle free of tackles and, more often than not, provide a killer end product to help feed City’s ravenous strikers. Alex McLeish may have plans to halt Silva’s ascendency as the Premier League’s outstanding performer this weekend; the odds are stacked against the Villa boss succeeding.

Behind these two, Wayne Rooney finds himself in an unaccustomed third spot in our poll, a position no doubt compounded by a testing trip to Anfield that arrives off the back of his dismissal in Montenegro. Rooney’s reaction to last week’s events will surely decide his returns from Saturday’s early kick-off – the Anfield faithful will be on his back, greeting every challenge that comes clattering his way. Rooney’s owners will hope that he’ll deliver an early reminder of his quality and form to help rid United of the ghosts of last season’s 3-1 defeat.

While Dirk Kuyt claimed a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last term, it was Luis Suarez who was the architect of United’s downfall. The Uruguayan finds himself fourth in our poll, with memories of his performance still fresh. United will hope to welcome back defensive reinforcements in order to counter the movement and trickery of Suarez but, so far, the voting indicates that confidence in the United backline has yet to be restored – the expectation is goals at both ends.

Sergio Aguero’s fitness remains a concern and keeps him bubbling under in fifth place – should he be fit to face Villa, there’s little doubt that he will be set to be the major damage dealer. Noises from the City camp so far indicate that he may well sit out after a futile spell with the Argentina squad.

Daniel Sturridge, Rafael Van der Vaart and Frank Lampard offer strong differential options. It’s interesting to see that Lampard’s hat-trick at the Reebok last time out has immediately put him above the pecking order over Juan Mata when it comes to our poll. Mata is yet to deliver a return on the same scale as Lampard’s haul at Bolton – the Spaniard is surely set to be a slow burning Fantasy asset; we could yet see further evidence of that when Everton visit the Bridge this weekend.

With just over 970 votes registered so far, there’s plenty of time for opinion to shift. Visit the middle column of the homepage to throw your hat into the ring before end of play tomorrow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Will have to keep an eye on VDV 🙁
Thinking of swithing Aguero > Suarez this gameweek but that could change my plans?

Kenny and Ferd (QPR) or Vorm and Jones for this gameweek.
Currently have the former with Jones as 1st Sub

    Cheers 🙂

Problem with VdV is that he's always a hammy risk. If he survives this week he could last 10 minutes next week. Beginning to doubt he's worth the the risk. I have 2.1m in the bank and can upgrade him to anyone I want for a 4pt hit.

Now Santon is back to full fitness I'd like to see him against Bale rather than Ryan Taylor.

Suppose it depends on Pardew's willingness to change a winning team but I would certainly chuck Santon in.

Silva over Nasri currently, not much more expensive.
Just been advised Balotelli over Aguero this GW, think he scored a hattrick over Villa last years??? Could be a good diff if it worked out...if?

Well, Id prefer Silva and Nani/VDV/Mata first.
But, Nasri has the mosts assists/goals for a midfielder (7, equal with Silva) and has the best points per game (since his City move) along with possible penalties (see previous page)
So it isnt a bad punt, but could backfire

Not many for this week I reckon. Once Aguero and Balotelli are back in the mix it's probably overkill since City's points will be shared between more players.

"He sometimes has a problem with that Rafa," said Redknapp.

"He has had a few hamstrings since he's been with us, but he's important to us - he scores goals. He's an amazing finisher. Last season I think he got 12, this season he's capable of getting near 20 goals from playing in that position where he likes to play."

I predict Aguero will at least be in the squad for City on Saturday. That's good enough for me to keep hold of him, because he stands a good chance of being involved at least. Mancini has said he's 100% to play against Villareal in the Champions League and should be ok for Saturday but is unsure if he'll take the risk. To say that he's already got to be quite sure of his fitness.

Yes, am sorely tempted. I currently got RVP Sturridge and Rooney up front. I figure swapping Rooney out for Suarez now during my wc avoids the temptation to transfer him next week when they hit a good run of fixtures. The available funds will always allow me to buy Roon back in (or Aguero for that matter). I think I might have just tlked myself in to it lol

Adebayor is very unlikely, so Sturridge is a good move. Why would you want to take Rooney out?

means i can get suarez in for him but also anderson/cabaye out for van der vart. what looks better to you?
        - rooney + anderson/cabaye
        or
        - suarez + van der vart
alsosuarez and van der vart fixtures are much better.

I thought he would start but with Balotelli over his injury and Aguero possibly fit enough to start I am questioning whether to keep him or not...

50:50. Balotelli the only one I think is certain to start. Aguero may start ahead of Dzeko.

Not this week though. First see how SG goes. he has only played 10min and 24min so far this season. I'm hoping he gets full 90min vs Nor.

I don't think he'll play a full 90 minutes but will play some part in the game.

Downing is due to score/assist I can see this game being 1-1

I don't understand why everyone thinks Estonia will be such an easy game they have really improved, it will be very close and I think Estonia will shade it.

Don't think anyone is saying it's easy tbf. But they're the best from the draw and Traps dour tactics would work best against them.

"stand a good chance" does not mean i think its an easy game. its a good draw for Ireland and they should be able to beat them.

We have the players to be able to beat them but not the manager, he is too stubborn in his player choices and tactics. You can't approach every game the same way no matter the opposition and there are league of Ireland players with more vision than Andrews/Whelan.

Suarez currently at 59% to rise, given FISO's consistency lately, I'm going to get him in when he reaches 80%.

That's what I've done with Silva as Vice.

I've traded Moses out this week for Bannan (or Banana, however you spell it) - may be a wrong move but Moses just isn't in the form he was pre-season.He went up 0.1 straight after as well which was nice 🙂
