This morning’s Scribbles sees Sir Alex Ferguson confirm Wayne Rooney as a starter for this evening’s Champions League match in Romania. Neil Warnock stands up for Adel Taarabt in the face of Joey Barton’s flak, while Peter Odemwingie vows to up his game after a slow start to the domestic campaign:

Yesterday saw Joey Barton lambast Adel Taarabt for his attitude and the winger’s walk out at Fulham a couple of Gameweeks back. Today, Neil Warnock has stepped into the fray and defended the Moroccan after a series of inept performances, suggesting he’ll be having a word or two in Joey’s ear after his skipper’s latest outburst:

What he is saying about Adel I think is a little bit out of order. I think there is one or two lads in the team at the moment that could do better so sometimes you look elsewhere. If he wants Adel to chase about and tackle and run, he is never going to be able to do that. If you looked at what Adel is not good at, you wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole. You’ve got to look at what he is good at and we would not be where we are now without him, without me looking at what he is good at.

With Carlos Tevez reportedly expected to find out his Man City future tomorrow, Boca Juniors are the latest of his old clubs to register an interest in acquiring his services. The controversy continues to overshadow City’s season so far but the recent form of Mario Balotelli, with a goal in each of his last four games, suggests the Argentine is a lot more expendable than he perhaps previously imagined.

Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney are both set to feature in Man United’s starting lineup for this evening’s Champions League match against Otelul Galati. Having initially started Rooney as a sub on Saturday at Anfield due to his “devastation” over the three-match ban for England, Sir Alex Ferguson –speaking yesterday- admitted he has no qualms about his forward’s state of mind for the match in Romania:

When he came on he was quite bubbly. He was full of energy and enthusiasm. He was desperate to get on, which is good. When he was sat watching the game he probably said, ‘Christ I could be out there’. He’ll be playing tomorrow.

David Moyes has added to the Everton ranks by re-signing James McFadden on a free transfer. The former Birmingham player had been linked with both Wolves and Sunderland but chose to return to Goodison three years after the club sold him for £5.5m. Moyes, however, admitted he has worries over securing the future of young Ross Barkley. The midfielder turns eighteen in December and will be offered a new contract by the club but his manager feels others may be scheming to swoop for his signature:

Every club will want Ross as he is going to be an outstanding player. I’m worried it will be a difficulty for us in the future. If someone comes for Ross I’ve always said it it’s expensive to buy off Everton. If you’re going to come and try to take our better players we don’t sell cheap, that’s for sure. I’m sure the bigger clubs will be looking at him, but we’ve no intention of selling.

On the back of Arsenal’s poor start to the season, Arsene Wenger has admitted that half his side wanted to leave in the summer transfer window. Speaking on French Radio last night, the Gunners boss also went on to slam some of the players who swapped the Emirates for the Etihad this summer, alluding that the motives of Sami Nasri and Gael Clichy were nothing more than money motivated:

You’re preparing for a season where you don’t know who’s going to come in, the players who are staying are asking themselves what’s going on at the club. It was extraordinarily difficult. What saved us is that we’re a club that are extremely solid and united…Frankly, if you compare what Manchester City have won in the past and what Arsenal have won, then you don’t go to Manchester City to win titles. Players go to Manchester City because they pay much better than Arsenal.

With three goals in his last three league games, Ramires is starting to make a case for himself as a viable Fantasy option. The Chelsea midfielder injured his knee while scoring against Everton on Saturday and reports suggest he was unable to train ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League match against Genk and is said to be a doubt for the weekend trip to QPR, though nothing has been officially confirmed by Chelsea on the matter.

A five game losing streak was compounded by the fact Wolves’ latest defeat was at the hands of arch-rivals West Brom. Kevin Doyle admitted yesterday that morale is low in the Molineux camp, with a showdown against Swansea key to stopping the rot:

It gets to you after one game, two games, three games, four games. Then when it gets to five it’s a nightmare. We probably deserved to get beat to be honest on Sunday. We now play Swansea at home this week and we have to look to win that one. That’s the only way we can look at it.

Peter Odemwingie’s goal in the 2-0 win over Wolves fired West Brom out the bottom three but the Nigerian has been a shadow of the player who took the Premier League by storm last season. Odemwingie bagged fifteen last time round but has so far found the net just twice- he was also subject to criticism from his country’s fans after they failed to qualify for next year’s African Cup of Nations. After a slow start to the campaign, he’s determined to kick on, admitting much of his recent problems have been more in the mind than anything else:

I worry about the team a lot and he (Hodgson) has noticed that I am a sensitive person. I do worry about the team and my performance. I had to take in stuff that I didn’t really like to hear this week from here and there. But this situation has also taught me that sometimes you have to let things pass, just concentrate on your work and keep going. With the goal I didn’t have time to think. It was like a training situation. I saw the goal and just relied on my instincts. I’m glad it went in and we climbed up the table and I scored my goal, so everything is good.

A central midfield role at Anfield on Saturday came as something of a shock to Phil Jones. The nineteen year-old has already played at centre-half and right-back for Man United this season and his versatility continues to afford him greater game time than many of his fellow defenders. Speaking to MUTV, he admitted:

Yes, it was a surprise. But, if the gaffer says I’m playing there, there’s no arguments. I’m happy to be playing. It’s hard as I’ve not played there in a while. The last time I played there, was for Blackburn quite a while ago but I had to adapt and I think it was about breaking the play up and making it difficult for Liverpool to play in there because it was quite congested.

I think/hope he does. The general consensus was that he replace Simpson because they needed a goal and Raylor is an obious threat with his set peice taking abilities. Defensively Raylor is a disaster waiting to happen. I guess we'll wait and see but if you can get 2 newcastle wingbacks for 8.3 i'm on it and they rotate well with Stoke. I'd rather 2 newcastle than 2 QPR or Blackburn as they look like conceding in every game.

Its Rooney Sturridge RVP/Aguero. It's difficult to put Baines VDV Rooney in my team because of the atrocious value Lampard is too dear for me. my provisional front line was

                    Sinclair Silva Moses Sess VDV
                    Rooney Sturridge RVP

but thats without baines if I have baines i need to lose Silva or VDV. What about you?

definitely going with baines, tempted to leave man city alone with their fixtures tbh although toying with the idea of starting with aguero, switching to rvp gwk13 then back to aguero gwk14

also looks like ill need a way to get liverpool cover in gwk15 onwards

    Hi guys,

Could use some advice. I'm looking at:

    1) Welbeck & Nani out, Suarez & VDV in (-4 pt. hit). Nani would come back in on WC later on.
    2) Welbeck & Larsson out. Suarez & Adam in (-4 pt. hit).
    3) Welbeck out, Adebayour in. Leaving me without any Liverpool coverage.
    4) Welbeck out, Suarez in. Leaving me without any Tottenham coverage.

This is driving me crazy because I really want Liverpool & Tottenham but Nani out for VDV looks rather silly and I'm not convinced on Adam. Other forwards are RVP and Agbonlahor.

    Thx.

1 looks best, you can get Suarez and Mata as Chelsea will destroy QPR this weekend.
Ideally I would want 2, but Adam is no good (Modric/Bale aren't worth either)
If nothing else works, 4 is sufficient for now.

Mata looks interesting but he is just not doing it for me at the moment. But it is "difficult" with
        Suarez - Norwich
        VDV / Adebayour - Blackburn
        Agbonlahor - WBA
        Mata / Sturridge - QPR
        Van Persie - Stoke

    Krul - Vorm
    Bosingwa - Enrique - Woodgate - N.Taylor - Simpson
    Nani - Silva - Petrov - SWP - Dyer
    Rooney - Aguero - Adebayor

Who should I replace SWP with (up to £8.3m). I am thinking Bale is a good option with Spurs' fixtures. Ramsey is another one I'm thinking of but surely Bale will outscore him over the long run (Ramsey cheaper tho)? No-one really stands out in that price range. Anyone?

Wasssssuuuuuppppp! A little advice guys, if you don't mind?

I wildcarded last week and put in Balotelli for one week only, always planned to switch him to Suarez this week. Not worried about the racism stuff for now, let's put that aside. My problem is that Balotelli scored and has good fixtures after this United one...do I hold on to him for a massive differential?

My current team lacks any Liverpool coverage and I could perhaps just use the funds on bringing in Enrique or maybe Gerrard:

    Hennessey
    Warnock Naylor Simpson
    Bannan Nani VDV Silva
    Balotelli Sturridge RVP

    Begovic Hoolahan Tierney ShawX

    Thoughts?

Noticed a little chatter regarding Lampard. A word of warning thought.
I think once Torres is back fit then Lamps will see less game time. Mata will play there instead feeding Torres like he started to do before the red card. It looked like some partnership to me...

Errrr Mata plays on the left wing, Lamps in the centre. They're not in competition.

All have their Merrits. Sturridge would be my preference. Low Price. Big Club. Great Form and (appears to be) secure for minutes...

I transferred him in only to discover that I hadn't clicked confirm. Very upsetting...

no yet, u will have 2 weeks to do so, everton are miles away from being a good pick due to fixtures while totenham are a solid pick in attack these days wiht ade and vdv as a priority. any extra investement should come the week before the DGW, after all it will be a tough fixture for both of tem and u need to know what the other fixture will be

    In need of much advice.
Have already made my free change, Wright-Phillips -> Eagles
I think next week will see the demise of Best, once Ben Arfa gets a start he will be a fixture in the team, most likely playing off Ba.
So I want to revamp my strikeforce, £2M in the bank:

    A) Best -> Agbonlahor
    B) Best -> Sturridge
    C) Van Pers & Best -> Adebayor & Suarez
    D) Aguero & Best -> Adebayor & Suarez
for 4 points and 8 points respectively

It would pain me to get rid of VP now that he is showing form, but Arsenal just looked awful and it is basically up to him to create something out of thin air to score.
And I would be worried Aguero just exploding again, but Tott and Liv have so many good fixtures coming up.
    Thoughts?

all they needed was a striker who can still have a good game without scoring and be implecated in the build up of their plays.

Nothing to do with Adebayor, Redknapp has been debating the merits of starting VDV in the hole or on the wing, if he plays him on the wing he is lazy and doesn't track back, so his best position is in the hole, if he plays him here then Defoe is the one to lose out.

He said that VDV looked sluggish at the weekend, and was all praise for Defoe, he is in a difficult situation whereby to drop VDV is madness, he is a big game player for Spurs, but where Defoe is in form (I would still prefer VDV any day!), he is finding it hard to ignore him.

Adebayor is undroppable in my view, Defoe and VDV have never had the best chemistry on the pitch, he has to pick either VDV or Defoe really.

He needs to be quite careful. He clearly has an attachment to Defoe, but if he doesnt play VDV in the hole then he risks alienating him, which im not sure he can really afford to do. Defoe leaving wouldnt actually be the end of the world for them in my opinion, as long as a decent super sub could be found.

Defoe is just an impact player, he should never be starting games now.

VDV should play in the hole - he was tired last gw having played 2 games for NL in the hole. Should be well enough rested by next weekend.

I agree entirely. Defoe is great to have to come on for 20-30 mins. However, does Defoe think that? Probably not.

Thoughts about UCl. Frei or Shaqiri? I think Shaqiri is better player, but Frei was good till now too. I am talking about the midfielder BTW

    Cheers,

I have Shaq, I like him more since Frei has scored with like every second shot he takes, which is unlikely to continue. But one guy who did a very nice CL overview here yesterday suggested otherwise, suggesting to that Frei in such good form that he is better.

Personally I think every high is followed by a low and Shaq will be the better option in the coming weeks.

And Shaqiri is able to explode, but its 0.2 cheaper. I need replacement for Ramsey. Shaqiri is also on set pieces right? And he scored 3 goals for his national team. So he must be the better player, rested and extremely motivated for CL debut. On the other hand the money issue is on Frei side and he'll earn me more bucks in the future.

        Still confused 🙁

Do you like dinner? (or as the southerners say 'lunch')
    Do you like FIFA?
    Do you like procrastinating?
Then combine them all by having a read of my review of FIFA12 here

Good stuff, especially the Sensible Soccer review!

On the FIFA review, 7/10 for 'longevity' seems a bit low - basically it's 'til FIFA13 comes out,' innit?
