Despite the game at Old Trafford grabbing most of the headlines, today’s Scout Notes has more than little Dutch flavour to it after Arsenal, Spurs and Everton all grab wins in Sunday afternoon’s fixtures. Here’s our round-up of yesterday’s games from a Fantasy perspective…

Royston Drenthe

A first start for the Dutchman saw him produce the goods as Everton ended Fulham’s unbeaten home league record. Drenthe has been used sparingly since his loan move but has presented a strong case for a continued role in David Moyes’ first XI following his display at the Cottage. A goal and 2 assists helped him to the maximum bonus points and he is now second-top FPL scoring player for Everton, despite limited game time. Currently a member of just 0.4% of Fantasy squads, he’s likely to take a substantial jump from Gameweek 12 onwards, as Everton’s fixtures improve considerably.

Mario Balotelli

Unlucky not to grab any bonus points this weekend, the Italian’s consistency has taken a dramatic upturn over the last few fixtures. Having played just twenty minutes in the first five games of the season, Balotelli’s brace at Old Trafford means he has now found the net in each of City’s last four league games and is looking a viable Fantasy prospect. While he claims there’s a new-found maturity to his game, there are a couple of other factors to his recent run in the first-team. Edin Dzeko’s tantrum at Bayern coupled with Sergio Aguero’s groin injury afforded Balotelli virtually a full game at Blackburn, while his European suspension helped him to more league time, with the aforementioned pair rested for Champions League action. With his suspension now over, he could be more prone to league rotation.

James Milner

A little like Adam Johnson, Milner –when picked- clearly has the potential to produce for City. Yesterday’s game saw him make his third start in a row for Roberto Mancini’s side, however, and he’s now overtaken Samir Nasri’s Fantasy total for the season. Milner’s game is clearly suited to the new bonus scoring system, too; somewhat bizarrely, he has now picked up more bonus than David Silva, despite playing almost two hundred and forty minutes less than the Spaniard.

David Luiz

Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to start Luiz over Branislav Ivanovic wasn’t the most inspired selection of his Chelsea tenure. Aside from conceding the penalty that helped QPR to a 1-0 win, Luiz looked ill-at-ease throughout and his display, if anything, could well have a positive impact on Ivanovic’s future game time at centre-half. In turn, this could help cement Jose Bosingwa’s future at right-back; Chelsea have been poor at the back this season and Luiz’s introduction further undermined this aspect of their game- his poor performance will certainly have given his manager food for thought, with the unexpected defeat depriving the Blues of a chance to leapfrog Man United into second place.

Robin Van Persie

When the team sheets were announced yesterday afternoon, many a Fantasy manager’s heart sank with the news that the Dutchman was benched for the visit of Stoke. While Gervinho ultimately outscored his skipper Fantasy-wise, with a goal, 2 assist s and 3 bonus points, Van Persie-once again- produced the goods for Arsene Wenger’s side, despite just twenty-five minutes game time. Although the Gunners away form has been woeful, with one point from four games, they have now won four in a row at the Emirates and Van Persie has ran riot in recent weeks- he has now scored twice in each of his last three home games.

Rafael Van der Vaart

Two more goals from Van der Vaart means he’s scored five in his last four games now. Spurs’ poor start to the campaign is a distant memory and with five wins in six, they’ll go into this weekend’s home game with QPR as huge favourites. The Dutchman’s maximum bonus award has seen him pick up 11 for the season now, more than any other player in FPL. It’s clear that if Harry Redknapp continues to play him in the hole behind Emmanuel Adebayor, Van der Vaart looks capable of racking up the Fantasy points time after time and with a strong run of fixtures ahead, looks set for heavy investment.

Anton Ferdinand

The QPR centre half has slipped under the radar of most Fantasy managers thus far, though yesterday’s performance further increased his potential. Ferdinand’s move to Loftus Road has seen him return 3 clean sheets and 7 bonus points in his six appearances for Neil Warnock’s side. Similar to Milner, his game seems to suit the new bonus system, though Ferdinand is a guaranteed starter- he is now just 1 bonus point behind Steven Taylor, though the Newcastle centre-half has picked up just a single bonus in the last six Gameweeks, in comparison.

Heidar Helguson

Drafted into the QPR starting for the misfiring Jay Bothroyd in Gameweek 8, Helguson has fully vindicated Neil Warnock’s decision. Yesterday’s penalty was his second goal in two games- Bothroyd had failed to find the net in the previous seven matches. With DJ Campbell injured for around two months with a foot problem, Helguson’s chances of leading the line for QPR over the next few gameweeks look strong, though with a tricky run of fixtures on the horizon, his chances of returning the Fantasy points perhaps don’t look too prosperous.

I just realised that there is no point me wild carding in GW11 after all. I've been planning it since the beginning. No man utd players until GW11, then bring 3 in on the wild card. But my main rival, who is 90 points ahead (it was 150 pts a few weeks ago) has Young, Nani, and Rooney, so there is not much point getting them. I was thinking of getting 3 others. Thinking De Gea, Jones, Anderson, Chico. But now i've realised there's not much point. I'm still thinking about De Gea and Jones, as I think they'll be forced to tighten up the defence. But I will now wait and see on that and maybe do it over a few weeks. Means I can save my wild card for the later in the season when I might really need it. Bonus!

My advice is to only worry about differentials nearer the end of the season, and for now buy whoever you think is going to score the most points, even if your rivals have them.

That kind of thinking cost me the league last year as I refused to get RVP.

In terms of Man Utd cover I'd say Nani and Rooney are essential, but make your decision nearer GW11.

Absolutely correct. Differentials dont really come into play yet for me. Just look at who is going to score the most and get them in.

Normally I would agree. But a 90+ point lead is a lot to claw back when your rival has the same big hitters.

Without taking your current squad into account, what gameweek would be ideal for a wildcard...

      the up coming international break?
      the busy xmas schedule?
      Late Feb / early march?

      ideas??

My most successful season I managed to keep my Wild card until about 8-10 weeks form the end and used it to strenthen and balance my side for the run in.

I am trying to do this again this season.

Am I correct in thinking that Drenthe took the FK that lead to Fulham's third goal? Has he wrestled some set-pieces of Sir Leighton? Very keen if so

For anyone who owns Young are you shipping out or sticking with, due to United's run from GW11?

United have: SUNDERLAND Swansea NEWCASTLE Aston Villa WOLVES qpr Fulham WIGAN ROVERS Newcastle BOLTON

Overall, this looks a nice set of fixtures, but which United players are you thinking?

Right now id get rid, hes price will plummet IMO. I think SUNDERLAND Swansea NEWCASTLE Aston Villa- All look good, but will not be totally hammered. So you have time to wait and see who emerges as the best option. Im a united fan, but as of now im happy with no cover at all.

Reckon I will just keep Rooney, he is the best bet to play every week and score big.

If cleverley gets a run of games I would look at him.

Cant touch a Utd defender at the moment especially if David oh dea keeps his place. Cant believe he hasnt taken more blame for the later goals in yesterdays game.

      Vorm / Kenny
      Enrique / Simpson / Ward / N Taylor / De Laet
      Silva / VDV / Nani / Nasri / N Dyer
      RVP / Adebayor / Sturrdige

Transfer already spent, 0m in the bank. I know my defence is abysmal, but I'm kinda happy with winging it like that at the moment. Only thing is I'll have to play Simpson away at Stoke, thinking maybe a 4ph for Ward > Wilkinson?

Why are people are saying don't take Nani out for VDV because Nani has good fixtures? Doesn't VDV have good fixtures as well and he's the player on form, so it would be a decent transfer..

I really really want VDV in my team but my 2 options are.
Straight Swap for Nani that leaves me no Man U coverage or wildcard and change a few.

      Team at moment is.

      Given, Ruddy
Boswinga, Simpson, Kompany, De Laet (need rid), Enrique
Silva, Nani, Arteta, Barkley (need rid), Barton,
      RVP, Suarez, Sturridge.

      What to do????
Straight swap this week then wildcard next to get the deadwood out or Wildcard this week and have Nani, Silva and VDV in midfield????

Yes you need to address that if you did wildcard, you should try to make funds and only at the final whistle put your real team together. If thats what you are doing anyway, and now you are working on final team, I would say dont double up on arsenal or tottenham. Need Manu Coverage and Chelsea coverage - of top 3 teams, you only carry aguero and silva. Personally I think aguero not worth it - rotation and silva should be a good consistent player to cover for city and city captain choice. Sturridge being a mid priced player, I would think is a must have on every team, as he represents top 3 team, plays every game, scores goals and bonus, and frees up lots of cash to bring in other big names.

i put ramsey and rvp both in too see what funds i had, am planning to play suarez one more week then upgrade to rvp.
          likewise ramsey may change.

i aim to bring sturridge in when spurs fixtures become less attractive and likewise i aim to bring in united coverage,

      Hi guys,

I have already done Arteta to Walters and want to get VDV into my team before his price rise, my team is:

      Kenny, Vorm,
      Brown, Boswing, Raylor, RJ, Enrique,
      Silva, Walters, Petrov, Moses, Dyer,
      Suarez, RVP, Rooney.

I currently have 3.3m in the bank, so thinking of doing (for a 4 point hit, as I have 2 freebies):

      Petrov - VDV
      RJ - Wilkinson

Sound sensible or does anyone think there is a better defender for 4.1m?

Just did Nani -> VDV for a free transfer. I know it's early but I wanted to beat the price rise. Planning to get Nani back for GW13....

One for any stoke fans - Wikinson is going to get quite a bit of attention this week as a cheap defender - is he a nailed on starter (as he was not playing earlier in the season) and would you transfer him in?

me, i do have an irrational love for him though. i did my walters transfer early just so i have the exact funds to do suarez->torres this week. he looks very much in form and hes my favorite player, hard to ignore for me. wouldnt be surprised to see him bag a couple vs arsenal next week

      Juan Mata on twitter:

Of course I'm fine, I have nothing on the shoulder! Carling Cup Wednesday against Everton

At least that's what Google Translate thinks he said! 😉

Thats twice in 4 weeks his points returns have been shafted by red cards to team mates... I have to admit of my 5 big hitters at the minute, his position is the least safe. Sheer class player though so will give him time

Long term Torres looks better value at 10.4 though... assuming this long awaited "return to form" materialises in league fixtures. Which I think it will. Imminently.

Is everyone else not feeling that Mata is worth the 9.6? Especially since I have Sturridge as Chelski cover. If i get rid of Juan, I have 10.3 to spend. I'm thinking of Nani? (Already have VDV and Silva) What about Nasri?

So guys do you think its worth rolling the dice one more time on Nasri? At home to Wolves seems like a good fixture if he actually starts.

Also anyone know much about Wilkinson's game time, that 4.0m entry into Stokes defence would slot very nicely in my team right now.

Maybe try and work backwards from the expected Villareal team? That match is super important to Mancini at the minute so I'm thinking Aguero & Silva will both start - meaning more likely to be rested/subbed off early v Wolves.

Nasri would probably be a good shout for Wolves game, AJ is probably even more likely to start though. Although he will probably play in Carling cup mid week so... Ah who knows who Mancini will play, its too hard to guess!

I'm basing Nasri on the CC game myself... if he plays that, I reckon he'll be rested against Wolves at the weekend. If he doesn't play the CC game, then he'll surely play at the weekend, otherwise he would have been benched 3 games in a row... that would be very odd from Mancini.

Even in that game he started on the bench! That was a very lucky haul of points... if he hadn't come on and done that, but come on for a 15min 1 pointer again, his last 6 games would have been 4, 2, 3, 1, 0, 1. Home against Wolves this weekend is the last chance for Samir in my team.

So annoying he is becoming a better and better differential by the day if only he played more.

Dont get why he isnt in that team recently a class player perhaps mr silva doesnt want him in to seal is thunder and work horses are what he wants along side him

I really dont get it rotated for 1 game fine but the last 3

I've done it, I clicked the button and i've taken an 8pt hit (1st hit since GW4)

      team is..........

      Ruddy,
      Enrique, Shawcross, Kompany,
      Silva, VDV, Nani, Dyer,
      RVP, Suarez, Sturridge

      Given, Simpson, De Laet, Barkley

That's it done now so not much I can do about it but I like my team. Lost 0.4m on Boswinga but to be honest Chelsea's lack of cleansheets was doing my head in....

I know, I was tempted to wildcard but can sort out DE Laet and Barkley another week.
          my 3 changes were
          Boswinga -> Shawcross
          Arteta -> VDV
          Barton -> Dyer

Leaves me 0.2m in bank so money to spend on Barkley -> Pilkington following week or similar

I have no doubt. Brought off early vs man utd. Balotelli played a lot lately. Full week to rest up when others will play in CC. he will play next weekend and will score 2 min.

0.0 in bank and 1 FT ... VDV did cause problem in my mini-league, so I will get him. But, how?

      Vorm - Krul
      Bosingwa - Kompany - Simpson - N.Taylor - De Laet
      Mata - Nani - Silva - M.Petrov - Dyer
      Ade - RVP - Suarez

      1) Nani > VDV .. Only possible candidate for direct swap. It was quite worrisome that Nani was taken out when Man Utd need to fight for goal last night. Anyway, it's sensible as he did nothing (no shot, no key pass) before subbed out. However, he's still capable to do 10+ points in his game.

      2) Mata > VDV and Suarez > Balotelli or Dzeko with 4 points hit .. Mata to make way and Suarez to fund the move. I feel Balotelli is more likely to start in EPL than Dzeko. Yes or No?

      3) Other way? Any opinions please.
