After previously skipping over to Italy and Portugal, our next Scout Report for European Fantasy managers participating in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game takes a shorter journey, with 2011 Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund coming under the microscope…

The Tactics

Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund side broke onto the scene last year and never looked back. A side most youthful and exuberant started well and never let up as they won again and again -even putting the likes of the almighty Bayern Munich to shame- in their title winning campaign.

The loss of Nuri Sahin to Real Madrid is not one which has been taken lightly at the Westfalenstadion and while trying to find a like-for-like replacement is a fruitless endeavour, Dortmund have been able to add to their squad all the same. While sticking to the German formation du jour (4-2-3-1) Klopp now has options available to him to mix and match as injury, preference and form collide.

UEFA Average Position Map

The first-choice defence remains the same as that which conceded a mere 22 goals (almost half of the second best in the Bundesliga) last time around. Roman Weidenfeller (1) remains the final blockade inbetween the posts doing all he can as he was last season.

The partnership of Mats Hummels (15) and Neven Subotic (4) are the solid base on which the foundations of the Dortmund side are built around with Lukasz Pszczek (26) charging down the right-hand flank and Marcel Schmelzer (29) doing just the same on the opposite side of the pitch.

Further forward is where the slight hand of rotation can begin to show with a few of Klopp’s squad fighting out for a couple of positions. Last season, it was Sven Bender (22) who starred as the ball-winner alongside Sahin, but Sebastian Kehl (5) and new signing Ilkay Gundogan (21) are all fighting for a spot, though the latter is not of the same calibre as the now-departed Turkish maestro.

Three further midfielders are then employed to support the sole striker in various different ways. Mario Gotze (11) is a shoe-in for automatic selection and will be more frequently than not employed on the right hand side- equally adept playing out wide or coming inwards and using his abilities as a playmaker.

That leaves two spots and, once again, three main players competing for them with a competent back-up in Jakub Blaszczykowski (16) in times of woe. Shinji Kagawa (23) provides a strong goal threat from attacking midfield, Kevin Grosskreutz (19) is best called upon to provide width, while main summer signing Ivan Perisic (14) is a happy amalgam of all the aforementioned’s talents, having joined for 5 million Euros after shining for Club Brugge last season.

Lucas Barrios (18) is generally the number one forward but, having been intermittently injured since the summer, the burden has so far been left to the only real deputy in Polish international Robert Lewandowski (9) this season.

The Ones To Watch

Neven Subotic: Mats Hummels is the heart of the back-four and, ultimately, the better of Dortmund’s two centre-backs, but he comes at a premium price of 6.4 while his team-mate Subotic is just under a cool million cheaper. A smart investor will buy the more affordable option and put the spare money to good use. Full-backs Lukasz Piszczk and Marcel Schmelzer also come in at roughly the same figure so could be considered equally as opportune purchase.

Mario Gotze: Not that the country needs it -they’ve got Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos to name but a few supreme talents- but, in Mario Gotze, Dortmund have a world class player in the making. The 19 year-old looks every bit the player already and at 7.9 will offer the chance to double your investment with his craft and ingenuity. There’s a reason sides like Arsenal and Manchester United are keeping incredibly close tabs on this young man.

Shinji Kagawa: The Japan international hasn’t been having as strong a start to his 2011/12 campaign as he did in his rookie term last year. However, at just 6.9 in price he will provide more than enough spark to potentially light up Champions League squads over the next three Matchdays at least. Having some of his main competition in Grosskreutz and Perisic “Out of Position” in the worst way (down as forwards) it also makes it an easier choice.

Robert Lewandowski: As a long term, heck even mid to short term purchase, Lewandowski is a risky proposition. At 6.9, though, and with a question mark over whether his main striking foe will be thrown in at the deep end, the big Pole should be a more than cheeky “differential” ahead of the crucial home tie with Olympiakos next weekend.

      much appreciated Natt.

I feel a little like I'm going crazy trying to find these price changes. I had always used totalFPL, but since its been quite slow to update this year, I took the time today to learn how to navigate the FISO site. (side note--finally learned where Mark and Granville get the weekly NTI data from on their podcast). But as of just now I only see last night's price changes on FISO, but TotalFPL has already updated!

So, when I say "much appreciated" for posting these as reliably as you do, I mean it.

      End rant.

        You're welcome.. 🙂

Make sure that you use both sites to monitor price. TotalFPL is more reliable for price rise and FISO is better for price drop..

I wouldn't say it's a pressing matter, more of a preference. I think that Villas D will come good, with that said I just played my WC and dropped Given/Ruddy for Mignolet/Krul.

Wilkinson+Kompany or Shawcross+Warnock or even Wilkinson+Warnock and have some cash on hand.

    Mignolet/Krul
    Enrique/Jones/Tierney/?/?

      I'd go Wilkinson + Kompany.

Stoke are close to a guaranteed CS at home but useless away, whereas City have a shot at a CS pretty much anywhere. Wilkinson + Kompany covers you for both teams.

Depends if the rest of your defence is nailed on. I think if you have 4 regulars Wilkinson might have been better but Barnett offers security and you dont want to keep wasting transfers on cheap defenders

Struggling a bit deciding my starting 11.

    Vorm
    Enrique Shawcross Naylor Bosingwa (Simpson)
    Silva VDV Johnson (Ramsey MPetrov)
    RVP Sturridge Rooney

So I think it is three of
    Ramsey
    Petrov
    Johnson
    Bosingwa
    Naylor (already playing Vorm)

Any help would be much appreciated

Adebayor may become more of a rotation threat now, perhaps Defoe could slot into his position, VDV has definitely sealed a spot upfront, its just as well 'arry took him off the wing and placed him up front. His returns will be a lot better as a result

Anyone have any pearls of wisdom for my team this week? 2 free transfers and 0.1m in the bank. Cheers

    Bosingwa, Woodgate, Brown

meant to say at the moment i'm between

      a) Bosingwa -> Richards (and saving a transfer)
      b) Bosingwa & Suarez -> N Taylor & Aguero

I'd say your defence is more of a concern than your strikers, so probably Bosingwa > Richards of those options.

Thought you could, over a couple of weeks, do:

Bos, Suarez, Woodgate > Richards, Aguero, Naylor

Would mean all your defenders are reliable starters (bar maybe Simpson) going forward.

                Moses > Johnson/Fox/similar 4.5 mid?

Unfortunately that only gains 0.2m given Moses' drops. Moses probably goes when I wildcard, but doubt i'll waste on transfer on getting rid of him until then. I think just Bos -> Richards is the safe play this week.

J'wick: my first thought was the defence. The gks aren't producing cs plus you have Dunne, Woodgate and Bosingwa with question marks against them.

I think you need to look at STK but not Woodgate. Wilkinson, Bergovic and ShawX are your choices.

Hi Jafa, do you think Wilkinson is nailed on? He's had less gametime than Woodgate so I'm not sure the swap is worthwhile? Admitedly Woodgate is an injury liability, but I think he'll start when fit in the league.

Bosingwa is almost certainly going this week, Dunne either this week or after GW11 where he has (SWA). Swaying towards just doing Bos -> Richards this week and playing a defence of:

        Ruddy (BLA)
Richards (WOL), Woodgate (NEW), Brown (AST)

Bringing another defender in for Dunne would mean dropping one of the above home bankers, or dropping one of my front 7 for a 4th defender which I'm not a fan of. Whatcha reckon?

Wilkinson has played the last 4 I believe. My only concern is Higginbotham and who he replaces. I play one exp defender and rotate 4 ubercheaps: could you make the decision to rotate around ShawX and save some cash?

          Is Richards nailed on?

If it was me, I'd be tempted to keep hold of Dunne for these good fixtures and get in some cheapies.

I think there are two issues that need addressing:

          1. The gks: I've got Vorm and Kenny who go well together.
          2. Downgrade defenders to upgrade the mids and fwds.

I'd prioritise first of all and do it gradually.

I'm swaying towards that strategy in defence now. Either that or 2 with one of them being Enrique (good value). Richards seems fairly nailed on and it means I can get MCY coverage for their great next 3 fixtures with only using 1 transfer. Also Richards is piling up the assists and he's such a lump he usually poses a threat at corners/set pieces too. Gonna take a gamble on him I think. Dunne and Given most likely go after GW11, probably for 2 cheapies so I can do Suarez -> Pig.

feeling unwisely confident about my transfers this week and my team for the next two weeks, but aguero's gotta get back in there soon after that. Anyone want to discuss strategy?

    Vorm Krul
    Enrique Shawcross Wilkinson Simpson Barnett
    VDV Nani Silva Ramsey B.Johnson
    Suarez Sturridge RVP

Will need to free up ~ 1.4m (give or take .1) to go Suarez to Aguero.

Plan A is downgrade Sturridge to a cheaper FW (Graham or Morrison probably).

Plan B is downgrade Nani (probably significantly, to Brunt or Walters)

Least desirable plan C is turn Ramsey into another 5m mid.

A bad position to be in, you can only have so much big names and big team coverage. Its hard to bring it all together even if you have a dirt cheap defense. Its almost inevitable that you will need either a dirt cheap striker as well or 2 dirt cheap midfielders. Otherwise wholesale changes to your relatively cheap players to even cheaper players may just make up the .2 or .3 here and there

Plan C. Your team is in reasonably good shape but BJ for the Milkman would be an idea. I wouldn't get rid of Nani with better fixtures coming up. Aguero is most likely to suffer some rest/rotation.

so a bit of analysis of liverpool:
for the wba game, agger and lucas are back, which means they can play with a higher difensive line since agger has more pace than skrtel/carra and lucas can cover the defensive hole that was soooo obvious against wba.
I can see a solid result there for pool.
the question is wether caroll will start up front and push suarez to the right wing, or even worse, to the bench since there was a lot of frustration in his game last time out

Right, Suarez has got to go. I've spent long enough waiting for his admittedly great performances to turn into FPL points. Question is, who do I bring in? Already got Adebayor and Rooney. Was thinking maybe Balotelli or even Sturridge, who would free up some cash, allowing me to upgrade Mikel in midfield.

    Thoughts?

I have been wrong many times before and will be so many times again. I just dont call people asses for their opinions - my point isnt to say i am right, just a point of view. If you have a strategy, give it time to work itself out, otherwise you are just always just chasing a lead. My team is linked for the world to see, I have nothing to be proud of.

I do not have Rooney or Aguero for the next two weeks. I will not be using a transfer next week (yeah right see how long i stick to that) and plan on doing the following GW 12

    Suarez > Aguero
    Gutierez > reo coker...

I may be 0.1 or 0.2 short by then unless Gutierrez rises and Aguero doesn't

good idea yes or no assumiong I have the funds

Enrique / Bosingwa / Raylor / De Laet / Ward

Who should I get rid of first???

Be rid of Ward, De Lite, Bos and you'll have a pretty decent team. 🙂 Brown, Tierney/Barnett, STK def are alternatives.
