There’s little doubt who the star turn was in yesterday’s round of games. “Robin Reliant” came up trumps yet again, as a Robin Van Persie tore Chelsea apart in the lunchtime Stamford Bridge kick-off. Here’s a round-up of the Scout Notes from Saturday’s eight matches…

Robin Van Persie
A hat-trick at the Bridge ripped Chelsea to pieces and underlined the Dutchman’s explosive Fantasy form. Van Persie’s start to the season was particularly slow –just a single goal in his first five fixtures- but the following five have harvested 9 goals and propelled him to the summit of the goalscoring charts, ahead of Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero. Few would, perhaps, have handed him the armband but an ever-obliging Chelsea defence are always likely to concede right now- no one can argue with many Fantasy managers’ decision to sell on the likes of Jose Bosingwa last week. Van Persie has a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon but showed yesterday that his form is impossible to ignore, regardless of opponent.

Juan Mata
Amidst the mayhem of yesterday’s home defeat, Mata showed his Fantasy credentials. The Spaniard is yet to justify his 9.6 pricing to any significant extent but the Stamford Bridge loss saw him return a double-figure tally for the first time since moving from Valencia. A goal and assist in the 5-3 loss was of little consolation to Andre Villas-Boas but for his patient Fantasy backers, it proved significant reward.

Frank Lampard
Lampard returned a double figure FPL return for the third time this season; he is now second only to David Silva in the overall midfield score chart. Although his price is still a major concern, there can be few doubts now that Lampard’s attacking instincts and influence are flourishing under Villas-Boas. Indeed, as the Chelsea defence continues to falter, Lampard’s attacking potential seems set to remain strong as two ore more goals remain paramount to the prospects of three points.

Daniel Sturridge
A winning goal in the midweek Carling Cup tie at Everton continued a strong run of form but Sturridge unquestionably suffered a bad day at the office against the Gunners. Missed opportunities, wasted crosses – Sturridge faltered and will be feeling the pressure following his substitution on 61 minutes. We’d expect him to start at Blackburn next time out but, draw a blank there, and he could well come under serious threat for a starting role. Sturridge already suffered an FPL price drop overnight.

Wayne Rooney
Owners of the United forward were yesterday put on alert, as a deeper role in the Goodison win allowed Javier Hernandez to partner Danny Welbeck further up the field. A lack of bite in the middle of the park in last weekend’s defeat by Man City may have played a part, as Sir Alex Ferguson chose the industry and graft of Rooney for a tricky trip to old club Everton. It may have been a one-off but, with the return of Nemanja Vidic to the champions’ back-four, Ferguson’s side recorded their first clean sheet in four and the United manager’s post-match comments will give plenty food for thought:

”Everyone’s telling us the stats about chances made against us. We knew we had to reduce that number if we are going to win the league, and reinforcing the midfield was one way of doing it. We brought Wayne back to increase our numbers in midfield. Today we were very solid.”

Adam Johnson
The team sheet put paid to the doubter’s theories of rest and rotation for David Silva and Sergio Aguero as Man City played host to Wolves. Both started in the 3-1 win, though an assist apiece was as good as it got for their respective Fantasy owners. Adam Johnson, on the other hand, despite a brief twenty-eight minute second-half cameo, bettered both their tallies, rounding off the victory with a stoppage time goal. Johnson has featured in three of City’s last four league games and has found the net in every one of his appearances- added to his midweek Carling Cup performance, it’s clear he’s blossoming into a strong squad player as the season unfolds.

Bradley Johnson
For a low-price budget option, the Norwich midfielder is ticking along rather nicely. Priced at just 4.5, Johnson’s goal in the home draw with Blackburn was his second of the season and, added to a couple of previous assists, he’s now sitting on 34 Fantasy points. Compare this to the Canaries 5.2 playmaker Wes Hoolahan, on 21 points, and Johnson is forging a reasonable case for consideration for those looking to cut costs in their Fantasy midfield.

Chris Samba
Blackburn’s defensive prospects have been appalling, with not a single clean sheet to their name thus far. Typically a reliable source of Fantasy points, Samba had struggled to make any sort of impact in the early stages of the campaign- the solidity instilled by previous bosses seems to have evaporated under Steve Kean and after seven gameweeks, the Rovers skipper had a mere 4 Fantasy points to his name. Yesterday’s goal in the 3-3 Carrow Road thriller underlines his recent attacking potential- Samba has now scored twice and produced one assist in the last three gameweeks, in addition to grabbing three bonus.

Stephane Sessegnon
Clearly, a role out wide is more suited to the Benin international. Sessegnon failed to fire when tucked in behind a lone frontman but since moving to the wing and a change of system to 4-4-2, he’s finally flourished as a Fantasy proposition. A goal and assist for the second week running- with a strong chance of maximum bonus surely to follow- has seen the Black Cats midfielder finally begin to realise his pre-season potential.

Stiliyan Petrov
The Bulgarian was renowned for his attacking prowess during his time with Celtic but recent seasons have seen him mainly utilised as a deep-lying central midfielder at Aston Villa. The arrival of Alex McLeish seems to have removed the shackles, however, and yesterday’s goal and assist in the 2-2 draw at Sunderland highlighted his ability to produce further up the pitch. Petrov had scored three goals in the previous three seasons at Villa Park- already he has scored a couple under Big Eck and returned double figures for the second time in ten games.

Angel Rangel, Joe Allen and Danny Graham

Angel fully justified out Scout Picks decision to go with the right-back over keeper Michel Vorm – recording a pair of assists in Swansea’s win over Bolton. The Welsh club may have conceded for the first time at home this season but the right-back’s ability to forage forward and lend weight to their attacking ploys proved crucial yesterday afternoon and maintained his Liberty Stadium average of over six points per game.

Joe Allen was, once again, in amongst the points for the Swans, grabbing his second goal on the trot. Allen has developed consistency as the season unfolds; it’s 34 FPL points from his last six gameweeks now and, at 4.5, is looking the best budget midfielder in the Swansea ranks, backing up his inclusion in Big Dunc’s Differential’s back in gameweek nine.

A mention must also go to Danny Graham here- an own goal from the centre forward ended Swansea’s run of clean sheets but a goal at the other end maintains his hot streak of form; the former Hornet has now netted in the last four games, making a mockery of his 4.9 price tag. Fixtures at Liverpool and United may well perturb short-term investment however.

Luis Suarez
The Uruguayan may have failed to score in Liverpool’s win at West Brom but set up both goals in the 2-0 win. The two assists at the Hawthorns were, surprisingly, Suarez’s first of the season but his inability to find the net means he’s scored just twice in the last eight league games. His Fantasy owners will be looking for an improvement at home to Swansea next week before he squares up to Chelsea and Man City.

Clint Dempsey
A goal in Fulham’s win at Wigan means that Dempsey has grabbed two goals and two assists in the last four games, a return of 26 points, pre-bonus. While the 6-0 win over QPR saw the likes of Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora hog the headlines, Dempsey is showing a greater consistency than any of Fulham’s attackers right now, despite his role on the wing.

    b) Ekotto > Evans, Young > VDV or Nani

What are the pros and cons of doing Kompany > Jones? Everybody seems to be called an eedjut if they are considering ditching Kompany however the as I see it
Jones has the easier fixtures, even away you would play him in every game til January
Jones offers relatively consistent attacking returns and may be played OOP occasionally
Jones should be nailed on considering his performance so far and Smalling's injury
Kompany probably plays in the better defence however they don't look quite as secure as last year - conceeding goals against even relatively easy defences with a greater focus on attacking

What am I missing? It doesn't seem like a stupid move to me so I feel like I must be missing or interpretting something wrong.

I wish. It'll be a 50 hour round trip from home in Melbourne to Carrow Road!

I watched the game though. I was pretty impressed with your boys. I'd rank your boys as the toughest challenge we've had at home all season. While we lost to West Brom, we played badly and West Brom we're mediocre at best. Your boys pushed us and we have to get used to playing guys like Hoilett, Formica and Rochina (why he got subbed off I'll never know). They played really well IMO

Yep was a good game, still gutted we didn't get the 3 points. We are fine going forward and always look like getting goals just can't keep them out at the other end, a bit like yourselves. Think we are still the only 2 teams without a clean sheet all season!

Rochina is great when in possession. Can spot a pass and has a good shot he's just got ZERO defensive instincts. The first half it was like we had no right midfielder. In the end i think they swapped Formica and Rochina around to let him play more central.

I knew from this season that we weren't going to keep cleanies. It didn't worry me to be honest, because I thought our fire power up front would even it out. I thought Givet and the RB (can't remember his name) looked a bit frail for you guys, especially when he tried to go up for a header against Holt!

Yeah it's Jason Lowe who is playing RB at the moment, we are very short of options there. TBH i think he did ok yesterday considering he was basically playing 2 positions with the right flank almost always deserted, Rochina wandering about up front somewhere!

Morison kept pulling onto Olsson at left back as well and winning the vast majority of the headers

Probably. I find it a little striking that you say his job security is okay. You just don't know with Man United and Fergie's somewhat 'trust' in Evans. Meanwhile, this is the first time where Kompany hasn't played 90 minutes all season.

In saying that, I'll be doing Mertesacker->Jones next week

No I know you don't quite know with Fergie but Jones versatility has got to count in his favour.
Kompany would be unlikely to be in my team GW 13,15,16 and is obviously missing the next game. Therefore I can justify getting rid of him i think.

All depends on if Gerrard is going to play for me tbf.

So what's everyone doing with Rooney, will he continue to play as deep as he has been?

I hate it, if this was last season i'd have swapped him out 3 weeks ago RvP, but because everyone in my mini-league was captaining every week, i didn't want to get rid of just in case i'd fall further behind. A sort of damage control thing.

Also, what about Mata? Is he suddenly worth holding onto?

Baines is a good pick expensive but his luck will change soon hit the woodwork from a free kick yesterday.

Only a matter of time and good fixtures too come.

Drenthe i would stay clear as Moyes tends to change things around especially wide midfield roles, so he is far from being nailed on + how many times do we see a great full debut like his v fulham and then a player flattering to deceive after that.

I think Drenthe is quite nailed on.
Everton were very poor up until last week against Fulham when Drenthe ripped them apart, then he looked dangerous against Chelsea midweek before send-off.
Especially with Billy the Russian playing so poorly yesterday, and the fact Drenthe is going to be hogging some set-pieces means Baines isnt as an attractive option (not that he was already considering price)

Agreed. Moyes sees Drenthe as the only real creative option we have right now. With a weakened side through injury he has to start next week, surely. Played full games in last two matches before suspension and was our player of the game in both. FPL agreed on the Fulham game giving him 3BP's.

Good fixtures, Saha looking sharper, Cahill out. All looks set up for him to carry on where he left off as an attacking option in a good team, despite the squad size.

This is my complete and utter excrement team, i am 160 points behind my leader and regardless of who i buy i score about 35 points per week. My captain normally gets 1 point which doubles into a score of 2, this score of 2 really helps my overall score and propells me up my mini-league:

If i have Suarez vs Norwich = 2 points
i had Aguero vs Blackburn= 26 mins played 1 point
        Lampard vs QPR= 1 point
        Sturridge vs QPR= 1 point
it goes on week after week.

Downgrade in defence (consider spurs, stoke) and upgrade Ade to rvp. Leave nani for now.

Sorry should have clarified. Depending on funds (any in bank?) you may have to do it over more than 1 week obviously. I have had a bad start to the season also (have climbed almost a million places in 2 weeks though so patience can pay off.

Lost on last thread. I need some RVP in my team..

    Given Vorm
Kompany Bosingwa Enrique Simpson De Laet
    Silva VDV Cabaye Walters Dyer
    Rooney Adebayor Sturridge

3.6 in bank. Want to keep Rooney so looking at a -4.

    Options are:

    1 – Bosingwa + Ade —> Shawcross/Walker/5.8 defender and RVP
    2 – Bosingwa + Sturridge —> Wilkinson and RVP

Surely it is madness to get rid of sturridge before Blackburn? 1 or 2?

get rid of ade and kompany, u got spurs cover wiv vdv whos on pens. and spurs dont score enough goals to justify spending 19m on. im currently considering wilkinson, mcauley, shawcross, ward, r johnson and even evans! id add wes brown to that list for u (i got same defence as you part from i got brown instead of de laet)

Morning fellas. I couldnt control my knees yesterday and i brought in both van persie (after shipping him out last wknd 🙁 ) and ramsey for rises and fixtures. Then kompany gets suspended which leaves me with no subs as i have gabbidon and ferguson on the bench. Team is

    Given/Vorm
    Bosingwa/enrique/simpson (kompany,gabbidon)
    ramsey/silva/vdv/n.dyer (ferguson)
    van persie/adebayor/aguero

Iv already taken a 4pt hit for gwk 11. Should I leave my team and hope they all play or sacrifice another 4pts and bring in a defender just in case someone is benched? Please help...

Exactly my question yesterday. There WAS an attempted tackle but the Chelsea defender kicked Walcott's foot, he fell over but got up again and scored with NO ONE else having touched the ball. I have written to FPL to ask this same question. There is a link at the bottom of the Rules page.

Which of the following is true?

Suarez has scored 2 in 5,
Suarez has scored 2 in 8,
Suarez has scored 4 in 10?

All are true but scout is using the most negative option. This is becoming a pattern, I have noticed the same attitude before (for example, Given's clean sheets earlier in the season). I think it's not objective, as should be. OK?

    Subs: Vorm, Bosingwa Sinclair, Brown

Any changes need to be made before next GW? Was thinking of Bos-> a defender with good fixtures for GW12 onwards eg ShawX,Wilkinson (doing the transfer this GW to save on price rise/drop) unless anyone can see anything more urgent that I need to change? Thanks!

I could do Bosingwa to a united defender eg Jones but can't afford Ade to Hernandez (rotation risk) or Rooney (playing in midfield) and wouldn't want to swap in either of them for RVP. In midfield Nani is an option but I prefer Silva and VDV to be honest and can't afford to upgrade another midfielder without downgrading Bos to a 4M defender AND Sinclair to a 4M midfielder.....fairly happy with my team as it is to be honest except for Bos and Petrov
