Man United’s build up to their Champions League clash with Otelul Galati tomorrow evening has produced some revealing comments regarding the future of Rio Ferdinand, with some significance to Fantasy managers.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Old Trafford tie, Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking at a press conference, has indicated that, with Nemanja Vidic his number one choice at centre-back, Ferdinand is now left to battle it out with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for a slot alongside the Serb.

No longer, it seems, is Ferdinand a guaranteed start for the champions, with his manager stating that the thirty-three year old will now have to modify his game as age catches up with him.

I explained to Rio the other day simply this – we have two young centre-backs coming through and I’m happy to have four and hope I can keep four of them happy for a long time. Rio’s almost 33 and has obviously lost the yard of pace he had five years ago but that doesn’t mean to say he can’t tailor his game into a different game where he doesn’t rely on pace. I did that myself when I lost some sharpness so I tailored my game differently. Rio will do the same and he’ll be fine. He’s still one of the best footballers in the country in terms of his use of the ball. He has a great presence and can still tackle and head the ball.

Ferdinand has taken part in six of United’s league games so far but with Vidic only now returning to fitness following a calf injury, they’ve shown little resilience at the back this season. Vidic’s two games in the past week, however, have seen United record clean sheets, though Ferdinand – perhaps after his display against Man City in the 6-1 mauling – played no part. Jones was preferred for the Carling Cup trip to Aldershot and Evans retained his start at Goodison.

With Vidic suspended tomorrow evening, Ferdinand looks odds-on to return to the heart of the back-four, though whether he’ll keep his place against Sunderland this weekend is perhaps unlikely. An unchanged defence from the Everton game looks to be on the cards.

Long-term, though, Ferdinand’s appearances will perhaps continue to be limited. The adaptability of both Smalling and Jones may work in Ferdinand’s favour to a certain extent, with either player also capable of filling in at right-back. Jones is also able to slot into defensive central midfield, leaving Evans as the only out-and-out centre half of Ferguson’s three younger options.

Smalling’s recent foot injury will sideline him for a month and as of yet this season, Ferguson has not had a full quota of defenders to choose from. With Rafael also now available to return at right-back, Ferdinand could find himself a peripheral figure as his manager looks to re-invigorate the United back-line, with the shockwaves from the City defeat still reverberating around Old Trafford.

For Fantasy managers, Evans is by far the most intriguing option given his rather modest pricing across the Fantasy games. The Irishman has started eight of United’s ten league games so far this season and, at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, has to be considered as a short-term option at the very least.

The return of Vidic was expected to dent Evans’s prospects but the start at Goodison, following his red card against City, was a surprise. Ferdinand was left to look on from the sidelines in that game and will likely find himself in that position again this weekend.

With improved fixtures on the horizon and with the possibility that Ferguson will look to discover a more miserly approach following the City thrashing, Fantasy managers will be keen to examine the options in the United back four. Today’s comments have shed more light on the situation and offered further indication that Evans will remain in the mix.

We’ve seen that Ferguson is more than willing to show faith in Evans and, in the past, the United boss has looked to establish a settled partnership in the league. If Evans can maintain a decent level of performance and United can embark on a run of improved defensive displays, there’s even the possibility that he could perhaps make the position alongside Vidic his own.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If he learns how to pass, shoot and tackle, yeah, should be. If not, he shouldn't be in the team. He had a shit game against Arsenal and I've transferred him out for Hoilett. I don't think he will lose his place over that one performance but AVB was furious after the Arsenal game so I don't know what he'll do. If he doesn't step up soon, he'll be back on the bench. It's 50/50 tbh, I'd get rid though because he's very inconsistent.

A footballer at that level, should be able to automaically be able to pass, shoot and tackle, otherwise needs to choose another profession.

John Terry should not be playing every game, I'm not saying he should be out of the side for good but he needs occasional resting. To be fair, AVB has rested him already a few times so maybe he's already had the chat with him. Why are they the problems- Ivanovic, Bosingwa and Mikel? Cech was our worst player against Arsenal.

Cech had no cover from his defence. Yes he wasnt great but he shouldnt be getting RVP and his minions 1on1 that many times in a game.

Mikel is useless, slows us down, gives us nothing going fwd, not good enough at anticipating the play, cant tackle particuarly well. Dont know why we play him, Romeu should be given a go or Ramires/Meireles can play there

Bosingwa is a liability defensivly, Ivanovic is better at RB than at CB.

not sure what your poiint is about JT as he has been rested in champs league/c cup games.

With Man Utd defenders you largely get what you pay for

Luxury Vidic- nailed on and when his form picks up likely to get a goal or two
Luxury Evra- nailed on, assist or two
mid price - Jones - 90 per cent nailed on due to skill in three different roles
cheap as chips Evans...risk of rotation

Rafael intrigues me....will keep an eye on him. Fergie tends to pick him in waves.....lots of starts...then a cock up, then he can't get back in . n

Anyone care to speculate as to what fergie will do re. Rooney. He must realise he is ineffective attacking wise in a deeper role. Will he just revert him back to a forward for the upcoming easy fixtures or continue sacrificing him for the team? To be fair rooney hasnt done his cause any favours with lacklustre performances over the last few weeks.

That may be so, but he's £4.5m and appears to have cemented a starting berth in a defence that will likely be in the top 3 teams in the cleanies chart.

Much better value than the £6.7m someone on here earlier was recommending people to pay for Vermaelen.

Which do people think is the best for GW11 only:

    Lampard, Rooney and Henderson.
    Nani, Suarez and Mata.
    Silva, Hernandez and Adam.
    Lampard, Hernandez and Downing.

I like the idea of Lamps at Blackburn to be honest. They have shipped 12 at home and if they go forward they will leave gaps , Free kicks, pens, corners etc etc.

This is my thinking. Maybe you can offer some ideas? I have 18.5 for a midfielder and striker with the Lampard option,

wellbeck or sturridge, I have Lamps and both of the others and i fell ok about it. The two cheap forwards didn't work out too well last week but the week before i got 14 from them

ok arsenal done chelsea over but chelsea had loads of opportunities and could themselves have had a few more goals, they're still creating loads of chances.

I already have Sturridge, you think Wellbeck will start against Sunderland? I think it could be embarrassing for Sunderland on Saturday.

i think so.. i only watched about half an hour of the utd everton game but he looked good, Cant see Fergie seeing any reason to change him to be honest

I have the same question with Martin Petrov, Do you think it is time to get rid of him despite good fixtures for Bolton?

I might take a punt and play him this week due to Sinclair playing away to Liverpool. I will then have two free transfers so will get rid of him if he does badly,

But when i ask if they've used their WC, they say no and that they're saving it for the end. So... can you save a wildcard or do you have to use the wildcard given to you in January?

Alright lads, I scored a whopping 87 this week. Have just the one free transfer. Suggestions Appreciated!

    Vorm / Given

Enrique, N Taylor, S Taylor, Ward, ShawX

    Silva, VDV, Dyer, Gerrard, Ferguson

    RVP, Suarez, Ba

Take out Stevie G? For Who?

Some people are telling me to take out Ward or ShawX, but isn't ward playing Wigan this weekend?
