Man United’s build up to their Champions League clash with Otelul Galati tomorrow evening has produced some revealing comments regarding the future of Rio Ferdinand, with some significance to Fantasy managers.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Old Trafford tie, Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking at a press conference, has indicated that, with Nemanja Vidic his number one choice at centre-back, Ferdinand is now left to battle it out with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for a slot alongside the Serb.

No longer, it seems, is Ferdinand a guaranteed start for the champions, with his manager stating that the thirty-three year old will now have to modify his game as age catches up with him.

I explained to Rio the other day simply this – we have two young centre-backs coming through and I’m happy to have four and hope I can keep four of them happy for a long time. Rio’s almost 33 and has obviously lost the yard of pace he had five years ago but that doesn’t mean to say he can’t tailor his game into a different game where he doesn’t rely on pace. I did that myself when I lost some sharpness so I tailored my game differently. Rio will do the same and he’ll be fine. He’s still one of the best footballers in the country in terms of his use of the ball. He has a great presence and can still tackle and head the ball.

Ferdinand has taken part in six of United’s league games so far but with Vidic only now returning to fitness following a calf injury, they’ve shown little resilience at the back this season. Vidic’s two games in the past week, however, have seen United record clean sheets, though Ferdinand – perhaps after his display against Man City in the 6-1 mauling – played no part. Jones was preferred for the Carling Cup trip to Aldershot and Evans retained his start at Goodison.

With Vidic suspended tomorrow evening, Ferdinand looks odds-on to return to the heart of the back-four, though whether he’ll keep his place against Sunderland this weekend is perhaps unlikely. An unchanged defence from the Everton game looks to be on the cards.

Long-term, though, Ferdinand’s appearances will perhaps continue to be limited. The adaptability of both Smalling and Jones may work in Ferdinand’s favour to a certain extent, with either player also capable of filling in at right-back. Jones is also able to slot into defensive central midfield, leaving Evans as the only out-and-out centre half of Ferguson’s three younger options.

Smalling’s recent foot injury will sideline him for a month and as of yet this season, Ferguson has not had a full quota of defenders to choose from. With Rafael also now available to return at right-back, Ferdinand could find himself a peripheral figure as his manager looks to re-invigorate the United back-line, with the shockwaves from the City defeat still reverberating around Old Trafford.

For Fantasy managers, Evans is by far the most intriguing option given his rather modest pricing across the Fantasy games. The Irishman has started eight of United’s ten league games so far this season and, at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, has to be considered as a short-term option at the very least.

The return of Vidic was expected to dent Evans’s prospects but the start at Goodison, following his red card against City, was a surprise. Ferdinand was left to look on from the sidelines in that game and will likely find himself in that position again this weekend.

With improved fixtures on the horizon and with the possibility that Ferguson will look to discover a more miserly approach following the City thrashing, Fantasy managers will be keen to examine the options in the United back four. Today’s comments have shed more light on the situation and offered further indication that Evans will remain in the mix.

We’ve seen that Ferguson is more than willing to show faith in Evans and, in the past, the United boss has looked to establish a settled partnership in the league. If Evans can maintain a decent level of performance and United can embark on a run of improved defensive displays, there’s even the possibility that he could perhaps make the position alongside Vidic his own.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        Agreed.

Hart maybe is a luxury. I'd be inclined to downgrade him to Begovic or Krul and use the cash to upgrade Moses or Spag bol.

This article amazingly comes out just at the right time.. 0.5m in bank with De Laet to get rid.
He could be a good investment until Smalling is back from injury.
Do any Man Utd fans agree with Sir Paulos' opinion regarding Evans?

As a United fan it pains me to say it but Rio's on his way out. The medical staff called it when they took over his USA tour diary in the summer: "His legs are gone." It's oddly reminiscent of GNev being horrendously exposed last season before he saw sense and called it quits. The only thing that eases my pain is when I look at Phil Jones and Chris Smalling as potential replacements for Rio. Both already very good players with the potential to become world beaters.

Agreed. But looking at this year's nominees, they don't actually consider those playing the best e.g. RVP has scored 38 goals this calendar year, Mario Gomez scored 39 in 46 last season and has scored 16 in 16 so far this season yet Cesc Fibreglass is nominated for doing very little for Arsenal or Barca in this timescale.

How do you feel about the article, for me it seems wishful thinking that Evans would be nailed on. Rafael is back, hell probably slot in at RB and Smalling/Jones will go in the CB.

I'd rather have a back line of Rafael, Jones/Smalling, Vidic and Evra than any line up involving Jonny Evans. It's a shame. Because he could be fairly good. But he just puts in poor performances every time he (for some reason) keeps being given a chance. The only thing that would worry me about my desired line up is Rafael, Jones and Evra all have a risky tendency to wander and not get back immediately, leaving Vidic (who isn't the fastest out of the blocks, let's be honest) to cover on his own.

Phalanges...the small foot bones, distal (further away from the heart or centre of the body) to the meta-tarsals (the longer bones of the foot). There are two in the 'big-toe' (this is called the hallux) and three in all the other toes, so that they can be identified specifically they are termed distal, proximal (nearer to the centre or the heart) and medial (a term used tgo describe the middle phalanges in this example)...they are numbered 1-5 from the hallux (big-toe). Sorry about that, i'm a physio

Won't play in Europa League game on Thursday in Israel.

May return away at Bolton but wouldn't play him, Stoke are poor away - especially after a Europa League game - see Sunderland, Swansea and Arsenal games.

I would say he's only nailed on for two weeks or so, when Rafael comes back. Then when Smalling returns even Jones may be at risk. Rotation-o-clock.

Taking in to account form and your gut feeling on how you think they do this season , which combo would you pick.

    Nani Adebayor and Boyata

    Or

    Lampard Bendtner and J Olsson

The reason I see the 2nd option as an alternative is because Lamps and Bendy are good differentials and despite his age frank is still a good points scorer and is on pens, where as nani and ade are owned by quite a few in my league and neitehr are on pens.

    hi guys,

quick question: so at the beginning of the fpl season, i thought given would be a season keeper (pun intended), but villa are having a tough time keeping cs. I also had da laet and thought he would do well, but he is out of favour and doesn't seem like getting any playing time soon. so i was wondering if this is a good idea: given and da laet for al habsi and evans.

    any comments are appreciated,

    cheers

Opinions needed on WHEN to make my transfers please.
I had planned to take out Suarez and Agbonlawhore next GW for RVP and Studge/Bendybus, however, the recent forms of RVP and Bosingwa has me feeling the urge to get them in/out this week.
    Current team is:
    Given Vorm
    Kompany Enrique Bos Brown Simpson
    Silva Nani VDV Ramsey Dyer
    Suarez Adebeyor Agbonlawhore

    Would you do:
    A: GW 11- Bos & Suarez > Wilkinson & RVP (-4pt), GW12 - Agbonlawhore > Studge/Bendybus
B: All three transfers next week for 4 pt hit

I suppose it boils down to who will score higher this week, Bos and Suarez or wilks and RVP.....and how important is it to get RVP before his price rises again, given that I know I want him next week anyway?
    Thanks in advance.
