While the “Vans” delivered the gameweek goods, Alex Ferguson tinkered in an attempt to give United solidity and bite. Not for the first time, Wayne Rooney proved pivotal to his plans – a shift in the engine room beckoned…

The Player

A sixth goal in five games saw Rafael Van der Vaart justify the armband. Demba Ba’s second hat-trick of the season reduced the Britannia fortress to rubble. However, it was Robin Van Persie’s triple at Stamford Bridge that caused the biggest tremor.

Even with form that had brought the Arsenal skipper six goals in his last four league starts, few would have anticipated the damage Van Persie inflicted at Stamford Bridge. The three strikes confirmed him as the Premier League’s leading scorer; the 19-points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game installed him as the leading player. Suddenly, having provided an early season spurt for many Fantasy managers, Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney were cast in the shadow of the Dutchman.

Van Persie’s devastating form has provided a major twist. With just over 10% ownership going into the weekend, the Gunners’ skipper has delivered a timely differential and help some to close the gap on those who benefited from the early flourishes from Rooney and Ageuro. What’s more, his fixtures offer little reassurance to those currently attempting to resist the move to acquire his services.

Barring injury, Van Persie seems set to blaze an unstoppable points trail. Central to Arsenal’s attacking ploys and on set-pieces, there’s no sign of Wenger curbing his side’s forward thinking. With defensive frailty now seemingly woven into “Wenger’s Arsenal” DNA, they simply have to go on attacking. The two-goals against Stoke in gameweek nine also demonstrated that Wenger can ill-afford to risk facing a Premier League opponent without his skipper.

There could yet be a derailment – we’ve seen it before. Right now however, it seems folly to turn down a ticket to board the Van Persie express.

The Team

There are prospects elsewhere, of course. Tottenham have a wealth of attacking talent that also demands our attention. Like Arsenal, they have fixtures on their side and, in Van der Vaart, they have a player in such form, he has a pull to rival even Van Persie.

Van der Vaart is the prime Fantasy talent on offer but, while Arsenal have been accused of being too reliant on Van Persie’s brilliance, Tottenham are very much a team. Built around the tireless toil of Scott Parker, they flank his industry with the raw pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon, a vibrant supply line to feed both Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor. Luka Modric buzzes at the centre of it all – prompting patterns and linking play.

On occasions in Sunday’s game, Tottenham combined this delicious weaponry to bewildering effect. The third goal, curled home by via Bale’s cultured left-foot, was sublime in its approach and execution. Paddy Kenny flapped helplessly; Neil Warnock was left humbled by the talent in Harry Redknapp’s locker.

Bale, having destroyed European defences last season, failed to translate that devastation to the Premier League stage. In Fantasy terms, like Modric, he has never really delivered on his promise. On Sunday’s evidence however, Bale may yet warrant our attention.

Lennon, on the opposite flank, chipped in with two assists and also has the talent to provide at least a fleeting distraction for Fantasy managers; maybe more. Adebayor, meanwhile, may well be dimmed by Van der Vaart’s goal spree having sparkled himself in an initial spell, but will surely find goals soon again with such talent around him.

Mountains should be moved to find room and the funds for Van der Vaart but, if acquiring the Dutchman is a stretch too far, there is an able supporting cast within Redknapp’s squad with the stage in front of them to make a further impact on our Fantasy seasons.

The Talking Point

While Van Persie checked-in a hat-trick to propel him to the top of the scoring charts, Wayne Rooney ploughed around Goodison in a midfield role, providing cover for the back four and the bullets for Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. The irony of Saturday’s events is obvious – the frustration felt by Rooney’s Fantasy owners even more so.

Rooney’s recent decline was signposted – we always expected him to have a difficult ride during his past three gameweeks, but few would have pictured him ending that spell in midfield, providing little threat to the opponent’s goal.

We now have a conundrum. There’s little doubt that we’ve fallen out of love with Rooney – already sitting on top of the “Transferred out” rankings in the FPL, he is doubtless being sacrificed to fund the arrival of Van Persie. A glance at the fixtures suggests we need to be wary however. While there’s little sign of the Arsenal man letting up, equally there’s every chance that Rooney could ignite once more.

The real issue is his role within the starting lineup. Ferguson’s little experiment at Goodison offered a reminder of a run of games which saw Rooney shackled by a shift on the flank last season. Having gained the win and a clean sheet, and with Hernandez and Welbeck as talented options, there’s a chance that Rooney could again be anchored in a deeper position.

If that is the case, on Saturday’s evidence, Rooney will struggle to recapture his previous rate of returns. Even if he is pitched up front with Hernandez – he could be encouraged to come deep; to bolster the midfield as Ferguson looks to make his side more robust and resistant to opponents’ attacks.

With Nani also drifting out of form and onto the United bench, suddenly we’re left looking at secondary targets within Ferguson’s squad to cover the attacking potential. The question is, will that attacking potential be tempered by Ferguson; is the hangover from the 6-1 City slapping still lingering?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The good thing about being in 1.7 millionth place by gameweek 4 is that those green arrows carry on coming week in week out and I steadily climb my mini leagues. The bad thing about being 1.7 millionth is that I'm still only in the 300,000 area.

This logic was ever present last time around too, didn't quite work out though.

I'm going to risk him with the armband all the same, if he's rested he'll only come on if they're losing and he only needs a short amount of time to make a massive difference.

Exactly on the vice captain point. If he is rested he'll on be brought on only if he's needed and at the moment (whether luck or skill) he's scoring with relative ease. If he doesn't play he goes to my bench and my vc hopefully does me proud... I'm looking at you VDV.

    All,

I have two asks if I may:

    1) If I have already made two transfers and then decide to use my wildcard will it just default the two transfers to the wildcard?

    2) After the Shawcross injury situation last night I am thinking of making 4 changes and using the wildcard creating the following:

    Krul/Ruddy
    Kompany/Enrique/Simpson/Wilkinson/Tierney
    Tchoyi/VDV/Silva/Ramsey/Dyer
    Rooney/RVP/Suarez

    £0m in bank

I would then look to move Suarez out for MC or TOTT after GW11.

    Any thoughts?

      1) Yes, they will be defaulted. From the rules: "Playing your wildcard will remove any points deductions from transfers already made in the same Gameweek."

      2) Seems like an okay team, but i would like to have some more balance in it. Your defenders and goalkeepers are not that strong - if you can sacrifice any of your galatico strikers to improve those areas i think you will be much better off.

I do agree but normally it is three at the back for me so Kompany, Enrique, Simpson with Wilkinson and Tierney as options.

With clean sheets at aminimum it seems there are far more points from midfield and attack.

I wouldn't go with Suarez, after the SWA game he's out of my team.

While his movement is superb he's simply not worth the frustration, even against WBA where he got a decent return he should have scored and it was just painful to watch those misses. I don't think it's 'bad luck' he's just not a clinical finisher, in addition the assists he got are the first two this season.

Sturridge had a bad game against Arsenal, but generally he is a decent goal scorer who'll not frustrate the hell out of you when you watch Chelsea play.

Chaps - Could do with some advice to help with a major injury/not playing crisis!

In the last week I've lost Gerrard/Boyata/Shawcross and I also have De Laet and Ferguson on the bench 🙂

    Team is...

    Krul/Vorm

Staylor, Shawcross, Boyata, Jones, De Laet
    Ramsey, Nani, VDV, Gerrard, Ferguson
    Ade/Aguero/Sturridge

Until Last night my plan was 4 point hit - Gerrard to Walters and Ade to RVP.

Now though if I don't swap a defender I'm only fielding 10 men! So was thinking Gerrard to Lamps and De Laet to Wilkinson. Is this a good idea? Or Gerrard to Walters and De Laet to Baines?

For people fed up with Moses a move to Allen is worth considering. 2 tough fixtures coming up but it was my best move of gw 10. A trip to Swansea now ranks as one of the toughest in the PL for attackers!!!

Dilema time and inputs appreciated: I'm about 30 points ahead in my league, used my WC and only have 1x freebie which I had planned to save until next GW. My problems are:
    Given/Ruddy
    Brown; Ward; Raylor; Kompany; Shawx
VDV; Silva; Anderson; Petrov; Banned Bannan
    RvP; Suarez; Ade
    0.7m in the bank

Decisions will depend on midweek games, think I need to upgrade Defence as a priority now. but had planned to upgrade mids originally. The combination of Bannan, Shawx, Kompany all out, means me having to play Brown away to Manu - which I could live with as long as ANderson & Petrov start, but they may not!

I had planned NOT to take hits this year, but feel in my position now the right one could / should pay off.

    1) Anderson & Ward to Cleverley & Enrique - 4 points
    2) Ward/Brown & Anderson to £5m def+ Watson - 4 points
    3) Anyone see anything else worth doing?

    Thanks.

      I would say option A:
Getting Ward out is a no brainer for me and Enrique is avery decent replacement.
Anderson out to cleverley , i don't like that one , you may end up with Cleverley coming off the bench and anderson playing, look some where else for a guranteed starter.

Trying to weigh up the relative strengths and weaknesses for the United defence as I feel that they should keep a fair few cleanies in the next run of games.

De Gea - 90% nailed on, could be rotated with Lindegaard occasionally. Don't usually spend that much on keepers and would mean that I don't play SuperVorm at all in the next run of games. May get better save points in the away fixtures.

Vidic - Very, very dear. 100% nailed on. Good goal threat for a few a year. Was a good bet for BPs but who knows this year.

Evra - Still quite dear. Probably close to 95% nailed on. Good chance of a few assists per year. May do well in BPs as fullbacks seem to prosper under this system.

Jones - Relatively cheap. Could be rotated but could also be put OOP into midfield. Looks like he may pick up a few assists and BPs along the way.

Evans - Cheaper than chips. Massive rotation risk with Vidic returning to fitness and Rio surely unlikely to be benched forever.

Rank order for me: Evra, Jones, De Gea, Evans, Vidic.

Just worried that he will be subjec to rotation all around now. Cleverely will take the deep lying midfielder, Rafael to return and compete for the RB slot and Vidic, Rio and Evans (and a returning Smalling) competing for CB.
Think Evra may be worth the extra 1.0

De Gea for me, cheapest in the nailed on options. and there are better cheap options in the defenders. So you can make up for the extra 0.6 spent.

How can you be 90% nailed on? You're either nailed on, or you're not.

No-one seems to be nailed on at Utd at the moment. The only one I'd consider is Jones, only if he can secure a place in the team. Rafael may be back soon though and even Evra, who hasn't been in great form (IMO), could be dropped/rotated.

I think it looks a fair call JSL, apart from Rooney's penalties he doesn't seem to be offering much for his price, although Anderson and Welbeck are both in what looks to me SAFs shake up and may suffer from rotation issues. I'm leaving ManU alone until it looks more stable.

This is frustrating. Rooney needs to play up front!

Ferguson can play Park as a holding mid field, even Cleverly when fit. Would be awesome to see Snjieder some in Jan, so he can play deep hahah this sucks.

Nevertheless not loosing faith in Rooney as there are some easy games coming up. RVP and Rooney up front... had to let Adey go as a result, hope it works out 🙂

I didn’t see the game last night, but I kept checking the live updates. Was annoyed ShawX went off, he isn’t the sort of guy to abandon without due reason, but if it didn’t look too bad just bench him for this week and see if he recovers in time for the favourable home games. I’m sure you’ll hear something from Pulis before the weekend anyway.

Petrov and de Laet are my main targets over the next 2 weeks but Petrov is home next wek and Stoke might be down 2 defenders. I planned on getting rid of Petrov this week but I might just leave him for this gw.

I was in a similar position on Saturday when I had to get RVP in. I got Ramires and I think I only had around 7.8 to work with

5 - 0 up on FIFA 12 online last night vs. Man City. 75 minutes in, my internet cuts (apparently they are having problems in my area at the moment) and it goes down as a defeat. Annoyance.

But then people who are only 1-0 but struggling would just disconnect and happily claim a win. While this system can create an element of annoyance it's much better.

It's better than the alternative of anytime you're winning someones pulls their ethernet cable out and no stat is left like in FIFA 11. This is the lesser of two evils by far.
