While the “Vans” delivered the gameweek goods, Alex Ferguson tinkered in an attempt to give United solidity and bite. Not for the first time, Wayne Rooney proved pivotal to his plans – a shift in the engine room beckoned…

The Player

A sixth goal in five games saw Rafael Van der Vaart justify the armband. Demba Ba’s second hat-trick of the season reduced the Britannia fortress to rubble. However, it was Robin Van Persie’s triple at Stamford Bridge that caused the biggest tremor.

Even with form that had brought the Arsenal skipper six goals in his last four league starts, few would have anticipated the damage Van Persie inflicted at Stamford Bridge. The three strikes confirmed him as the Premier League’s leading scorer; the 19-points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game installed him as the leading player. Suddenly, having provided an early season spurt for many Fantasy managers, Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney were cast in the shadow of the Dutchman.

Van Persie’s devastating form has provided a major twist. With just over 10% ownership going into the weekend, the Gunners’ skipper has delivered a timely differential and help some to close the gap on those who benefited from the early flourishes from Rooney and Ageuro. What’s more, his fixtures offer little reassurance to those currently attempting to resist the move to acquire his services.

Barring injury, Van Persie seems set to blaze an unstoppable points trail. Central to Arsenal’s attacking ploys and on set-pieces, there’s no sign of Wenger curbing his side’s forward thinking. With defensive frailty now seemingly woven into “Wenger’s Arsenal” DNA, they simply have to go on attacking. The two-goals against Stoke in gameweek nine also demonstrated that Wenger can ill-afford to risk facing a Premier League opponent without his skipper.

There could yet be a derailment – we’ve seen it before. Right now however, it seems folly to turn down a ticket to board the Van Persie express.

The Team

There are prospects elsewhere, of course. Tottenham have a wealth of attacking talent that also demands our attention. Like Arsenal, they have fixtures on their side and, in Van der Vaart, they have a player in such form, he has a pull to rival even Van Persie.

Van der Vaart is the prime Fantasy talent on offer but, while Arsenal have been accused of being too reliant on Van Persie’s brilliance, Tottenham are very much a team. Built around the tireless toil of Scott Parker, they flank his industry with the raw pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon, a vibrant supply line to feed both Van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor. Luka Modric buzzes at the centre of it all – prompting patterns and linking play.

On occasions in Sunday’s game, Tottenham combined this delicious weaponry to bewildering effect. The third goal, curled home by via Bale’s cultured left-foot, was sublime in its approach and execution. Paddy Kenny flapped helplessly; Neil Warnock was left humbled by the talent in Harry Redknapp’s locker.

Bale, having destroyed European defences last season, failed to translate that devastation to the Premier League stage. In Fantasy terms, like Modric, he has never really delivered on his promise. On Sunday’s evidence however, Bale may yet warrant our attention.

Lennon, on the opposite flank, chipped in with two assists and also has the talent to provide at least a fleeting distraction for Fantasy managers; maybe more. Adebayor, meanwhile, may well be dimmed by Van der Vaart’s goal spree having sparkled himself in an initial spell, but will surely find goals soon again with such talent around him.

Mountains should be moved to find room and the funds for Van der Vaart but, if acquiring the Dutchman is a stretch too far, there is an able supporting cast within Redknapp’s squad with the stage in front of them to make a further impact on our Fantasy seasons.

The Talking Point

While Van Persie checked-in a hat-trick to propel him to the top of the scoring charts, Wayne Rooney ploughed around Goodison in a midfield role, providing cover for the back four and the bullets for Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. The irony of Saturday’s events is obvious – the frustration felt by Rooney’s Fantasy owners even more so.

Rooney’s recent decline was signposted – we always expected him to have a difficult ride during his past three gameweeks, but few would have pictured him ending that spell in midfield, providing little threat to the opponent’s goal.

We now have a conundrum. There’s little doubt that we’ve fallen out of love with Rooney – already sitting on top of the “Transferred out” rankings in the FPL, he is doubtless being sacrificed to fund the arrival of Van Persie. A glance at the fixtures suggests we need to be wary however. While there’s little sign of the Arsenal man letting up, equally there’s every chance that Rooney could ignite once more.

The real issue is his role within the starting lineup. Ferguson’s little experiment at Goodison offered a reminder of a run of games which saw Rooney shackled by a shift on the flank last season. Having gained the win and a clean sheet, and with Hernandez and Welbeck as talented options, there’s a chance that Rooney could again be anchored in a deeper position.

If that is the case, on Saturday’s evidence, Rooney will struggle to recapture his previous rate of returns. Even if he is pitched up front with Hernandez – he could be encouraged to come deep; to bolster the midfield as Ferguson looks to make his side more robust and resistant to opponents’ attacks.

With Nani also drifting out of form and onto the United bench, suddenly we’re left looking at secondary targets within Ferguson’s squad to cover the attacking potential. The question is, will that attacking potential be tempered by Ferguson; is the hangover from the 6-1 City slapping still lingering?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

In the wake of Gameweek 4
Standing amongst the rubble of another disastrous gameweek I wondered what went wrong. A heinous red arrow was a mere formality as I dropped to an all time low of 1,248,721. Most of my mini league rivals had used their wildcards after gameweek 3, one gameweek without a wild card was too much for them it seems ;). I could not be bitter though, they can do whatever they want within the rules and it paid off handsomely. As they sat back and watched Rooney and Aguero grab hat tricks, my brow sported a cold sweat as my floundering 4 pt hit to bring in Jarvis, Dzeko and RVP returned a massive 3 pts.

Edin, the 4 goal hero of GW3, was duly given the armband, a cheap and certain route to City's attacking returns they said... he didn't play a single minute and VC RVP stepped up to return a pathetic 2 points at home to Swansea as the icing on my sh1t cake. It was a low. A wise old man took off his flat cap and shook his head in disapproval as I walked past him in the street. Two tramps drinking hot diarrhea from a rubber glove pointed and laughed with their toothless smiles. My missus started giving the postman the eye as his unchanged team from GW1 with Rooney(c) climbed to dizzying heights. My mum wasn't even angry at me, just disappointed. 🙁

    The Dawn After GW10
6 green arrows later and I have now jumped over 1 million places to an altogether respectable rank of 215,485. It's not great, but it's a start. I am now duking it out on an even footing at the top of my mini league... something I feel proud of having never had Rooney or Aguero at any stage this season. My mini league rivals can no longer tease me as a one hit wonder. I am no longer amongst the mire of non-active teams & managers. Praise the lord Hallelujah! 🙂 With the help of some Vandwagons I have finally clawed back a lot of the deficit that lay before me. The wise old man in the street gave me a jumping high five followed by a playful butt slap. The two tramps passed me my own rubber glove full of nutty goodness which I duly downed in celebration. The postman was vigorously raped by a rabid dog and my mum looked at me with pride once more. All is good again in the world of Fantasy Football.

    Current team for weekend

    Given
    Warnock, R Taylor, Shawcross, Bosingwa
    Walters, Ramsey, Milner
    Van Persie, Rooney, Adebayor

Benched- Krul. Sessengon, Sinclair, A Williams

    Have £1.5million in the bank.

I feel like midfield needs one of the big guns, but struggling to find the value and also slightly reluctant to get rid of Walters/Sinclair being penalty takers, plus Ramsey has been instrumental in a lot of play recently, so think assist and goals will be coming long term.

Sess is just in for Sunderlands good fixture run coming up, Milner has potential to be upgraded to avoid the rotation risk (thought he might actually be in team on the weekend in fairness).

I have Milner for City coverage at moment and he's actually only 22points behind Silva for the season which isn't bad considering he's played half as many games? He's in form aswell and keep thinking Silva is due to be rested but he never is.

I could upgrade to Silva though, just through downgrading Bosingwa to W Brown.

I might leave it until after Champions League before making decision then.

I'm sorry, but all these transfers cannot be good. If you're trying to win overall, then you need to be a bit more patient. Your transfers this week are absolutely horrible.

Balewagon will be short lived, Adebayor still has value (he was never going to be a goal a week player, you have to ride the good with the bad at 8.5).

Not done this in a while, i have a great week and planned to WC but the masses o here think thats not the best idea, my team this week is good so could save a transfer if i dont wc but if i do wc then i'l punt on welbeck i reckon, my team is

    Given (Kenny)
    Hutton Simpson Enrique (ShawX Naylor)
    Moses VDV Silva MPetrov (Sinclair)
    Suarez RVP Adebayor

I had planed on restructuring my defence as I cant see any of them being worthwhile in the weeks to come and loading up on good fixtures.

    Good fixtures
    ManU Spurs Arsenal Everton Sunderland

    Bad fixtures
    Villa Chelsea Liverpool Man City

What doy you think is the best way to go i have a few ideas myself but I wasnt so fresh eyes. Any ideas guys

Also im keeping Moses until January, barring injury, as i think hes great value at that price despite his poor scores his permances are great and he will hit the net soon.

I look at your team and I see no glaring errors. There's nothing there to make me go 'this boy needs an overhaul'.

So no you have no reason to wildcard, you have the two in-form fixture-proof players (RvP and VdV).

I would keep a watchful eye on the Adebayor situation, I haven't watched the games so I'm hoping its bad luck more than anything and he'll start scoring again (at 8.5 I wasn't expecting a goal a game, so he's staying for now).

I would consider bringing in Ba, Zamora, Sturridge or some such cheap striker for Adebayor/Suarez to bring in Kompany (he's still the best value defender for me) or even Baines if you can afford it next GW.

I'd say look at the situation next week (if enough people are wildcarding and we expect major price moves then go for it).

Maybe save a transfer this week and see if you can get away with the 2 free transfer 'mini-wildcard'.

Another good time to use the card would be when we have clarity on double GWs.

That Double gw / Play your WC theory is nonsense. People load up on every Tom, Dick and Harry and end up with defenders or people like Saha from cr*p teams.Managers with one of each team having a double outscore them by a mile.

            It happens every year.

Baines/VdV are looking to have a DGW coming.

Also with champions league football and FA Cup, there is a big chance of United/City doubles coming.

Also being stupid with your doubling up (e.g. chasing a Sunderland/Saha double) is not a problem with using the WC, its a problem with the user.

I'm not against using the WC this next GW per se, but just looking at the team listed - I feel its one of those use it just because situations.

Lamps hatty? AVB just went through the team for not following his tactical instructions and I'd say lamps was the but of most of his ire. The guy is supposed to provide cover for the fb's and creative passes for the strikers as fas as I can see but all he want's to do is get in the box and expose everyone behind him.

I would not be one bit suprised if lamps is dropped the next day and if he is watch torres, mata and sturridge benefit from the extra room provided and also the fb's from the cover provided them in midfiled and the defence for the same reason.

It was no coincidence that Chelsea played utd off the park when lamps was hooked at OT and unless he gets to grips with AVB's tactical plan then he better get himself a warm coat as the bench can be a cold place!

46% - Petr Cech has posted the worst saves to shots percentage in the 2011-12 Premier League. Exposed.

Hey guys, I have two freebies but not one good transfer comes to my mind:

    Given (Vorm)
    Lescott Bosingwa Simpson (Wilkinson Gabbidon)
    Silva Ramsey Sessegnon Sinclair (Moses)
    Rooney Suarez RVP 0.4

My frontline is as good as it gets this week, but my midfield is rather weak. Nobody seems worth taking out atm, even Bosingwa is not the worst choice over the next few weeks. I know that I need VdV, but that can wait one more week.

What do you think? Should I downgrade Bosingwa or Lescott to raise funds for VDV although it doesn't make lot of sense this week?

CV, firstly, your Mid is not weak, it merely reflects hefty up front investment and for the money, Ramsey, Sinclair are good FPL options alongside the unstoppable (apparently) Silva. But I would lose Lescott &/or Bosy. I just think you can add better Mid value with the extra cash, and CS are reasonably hard to find this season.

Raise £3m and you may be able to turn Sess into Dempsey or Adam.

I'm not keen on anyone else than VDV for GW12, so need to downgrade one of my strikers and one defender to be able to do that. Question is if I should downgrade Les/Bos now to avoid a 4 point hit next week.

You might want to think about Lescott to Richards, assuming you want to keep MNC defensive coverage. Saves a bit of money. Then use 2 FT next week to downgrade Suarez (when Liverpool's fixtures turn tougher) to afford VdV, maybe bring in Sturridge or Ba for Suarez and Ramsey out for VdV. RvP is all the Arsenal coverage you need.

Knee-Jerking to WILDCARD and take out

These are my thoughs, Ba is a serious option even with poor fixtures coming up. Few strikers can grab 2 hattricks in a season. That being said since his fixtures do get tough he will allow you to beef up your mid to play 5 when he has a tough fixture. Opinions?

    Reasons:
    1. For one gameweek punt as I am wildcarding after GW11.

Agree would move DeLaet out as the rest of your team seems decent. If you have 4 million in the bank it could be worth upgrading your defence. I'd go with Walker at Spurs. I'd also move Ward out in the coming weeks for a similar price but better defender (ie in a team that keeps more clean sheets), but not a priority this week.

    Given - (Ruddy)
Simpson – Walker - Jose Enrique – (Kompany (susp)) – (Boyata (inj))
Walters – Ramsey – Silva - Van der Vaart – (Ferguson (doesn’t start))
    Adebayor – Rooney - Suarez

In goals Given has been disappointing, there is better and slighly cheaper options out there, but I'm not spending my transfer on that this week. My defence is okayish but I'm downgrading Kompany this week. I'm happy with my midfield. Up front I'm obviously missing RVP, but reluctant to ship out Rooney after sticking with him over the last few weeks (this was a huge mistake) and he has a good fixture list (this could be a mistake). I might move Suerez out in the coming weeks for RVP but will have to raise extra funds. My bench is extremely poor especially now since Boyata got injured. I still have WC but reluctant to use it.

    Hi peeps,

First time on here, like to think I know a bit about the game, I know there's a few who seem to know their stuff, so any opinions on my team would be well received, cheers!

    Given (Ruddy)

Kompany - Ekotto - Enrique - (De Laet) Simpson

Van Der Vart - Ramsey - Sinclair - Walters (S.Ferguson)

Van Persie - Rooney - Adebayor

I know I need to change De Laet and Feguson as they're not playing.Have 1.5 miliion left in the bank, so any ideas, would be welcome. Thanks

    Hi everyone,

Another new poster. This is my current team, It's been doing alright but I can't continue without RVP. I have no money in the bank and I don't think it's wise to get rid of Suarez this week so I'm thinking.

    Nani --> Drenthe
    Adebayor ---> RVP

    Is this a wise decision!?

    Given (Vorm)

Jose Enrique - Jones - Assou-Ekotto (De Laet) (Simpson)

Ramsey - Silva - Van der Vaart - Nani (SInclair)

    Adebayor - Agbonlahor - Suarez

I'd consider the fixtures before shifting Adebayor ahead of Gabby (if you have the funds).

Getting rid of Nani could also be risky but justifiable if it's to get RVP I suppose.

I would consider getting rid of Given after GW11 too!

Yeah, I was planning on probably transferring Adebayor back in for Suarez next week. Just don't want to risk getting rid of him before the Swansea game.

I agree, getting rid of Nani is quite risky but I fear that the longer I stay without RVP the bigger the gap is going to get.

I think there's too much money in my midfield somehow. I guess the Champs league games could provide me with an answer.

Thanks for the tip on Given!

So your getting rid of Adebayor to get him a week later? Wouldn't recommend it at all as a) you will probably lose value as he will probably cost more to get back in and b) doing a transfer just for one week at this stage of the season is always risky - you might need that transfer, especially with the international break coming up.

Walters possibly didn't for 3 reasons:

      - Was on the losing team
      - 2 shots off target
      - pens may be weighted differently to other goals, which resulted in him having a lower PPI.

Haven't looked at S Taylor's stats, so don't know what put him above the rest.

I normally wait to see what the good people of FFS shout on the 'expected' BP's before I start getting my hopes up but that one really caught me off-guard.

I can't complain though as DVD got 3 when we were expecting 2.

LOL. There should be a list of commonly used abbreviations/nicknames. Not been posting for a week or so and had to scroll through all the teams to see who the hell BAE was as he was hardly mentioned before a week or 2 ago.

I think it's a bit rich to expect bonus points for Walters just because he scored a penalty. I'll take the cheap 5 points and not complain! Plus the 3 VDV boners was good for me as he was my captain so I can't grumble

Oh, and Van der Vaart = VDV, which sounds a bit like DVD... clever eh?
