The first half of our UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy game for Matchday four has more than enough to recap – an evening littered with penalties. As far as our Watchlist goes, we find ourselves happy with those starting and disappointed to find a couple of benchwarmers…

Ailton

The 4.1 striker lived up to his Watchlist billing as he started the FC APOEL ball rolling in another stunning Matchday performance. With just 2 group games left, the Cypriot champions remain on top of Group G thanks to a 2-1 victory over FC Porto in a fixture bursting with flavour until the very last kick. Our cheap striker opened the scoring, converting a first half penalty he himself earned (another handy one point) but the hosts looked to have their hopes quashed when Hulk scored a spot-kick for Porto in the 89th minute. Gustavo Manduca sent the stadium into raptures with a last gasp winner.

Expect to see Michel Platini’s face plastered all over town from hence forth.

Wojciech Szczesny

Arsenal failed to secure automatic promotion with a goalless draw at home to Marseille but Szczesny done us proud with a clean sheet. The Gunners recorded their second clean sheet in a row but the game again saw Robin Van Persie benched until midway through the second half. The Dutchman drew a rare blank, much to the frustration of his Champions League Fantasy owners but his limited game time last night will have been reassuring for his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners ahead of this weekend’s game against West Brom.

David Luiz

Installed to the Chelsea starting lineup away to Genk with John Terry an unused substitute, Luiz hardly covered himself in glory yet again. Ramires gave the visitors the lead and Luiz could have made matters a little simpler when he stepped up to take a penalty but the Portuguese centre-half fluffed his lines, with a tame effort allowing Genk keeper Laszlo Koteles to save the spot-kick just before the break. The home side appeared re-invigorated after the interval and our Watchlist candidate Kevin De Bruyne passed up a real chance to level matters before Jelle Vossen grabbed Genk’s first goal of the campaign on the hour mark to square matters up at one apiece.

Leo Messi

Away against the ten men of Viktoria Plzen, Lionel Messi racked up another Barcelona record- the diminutive Argentinian notched his 200th goal in a Barca shirt with the first of his three goals coming from the spot. Much better men struggle to find new ways to describe this living embodiment of football so we’ll leave his hat-trick in the 4-0 victory to stand for itself.

Cesc Fabregas continued his recovery from injury with the other goal, while Eric Abidal did our Watchlist a favour by helping Barcelona to another clean sheet. The sight of summer signing Alexis Sanchez coming off the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury will also have been very pleasing to the Barca fans.

Nicolas Lombaerts

While APOEL, rightly so, steal all the headlines in their group with victory over Porto, the reigning Russian champions of Zenit St. Petersburg kept their knock-out stage hopes alive with a slender victory over their Ukrainian neighbours of Shakhtar Donetsk. Belgian defender Nicolas Lombaerts will be drinking for free in Russia last night as his header from a Konstantin Zyryanov corner helped him a good way towards chalking up an impressive Matchday tally of 14 points for his European Fantasy managers. My colleague Akers chief among them.

Roberto Soldado

Another striker earned his spurs for our Watchlist this week and placed himself in our good books. Our very good books. This absolutely sumptuous backheel to re-instate Valencia’s lead, in what turned out to eventually be 3-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, kept the home side in with a chance to qualify for the knockout stages.

It was Jonas who opened the scoring in the game, however, when Bernd Leno mishit a clearance in the first minute and he used the free ball to slot home into the corner. Stefan Kiessling headed in the equaliser for Leverkusen while Adil Rami also used his noggin to cap off the game and make it into double-figure point scoring for the Matchday.

Neven Subotic

After featuring amongst the Ones to Watch in our Scout Report on Borussia Dortmund the Serbian defender more than earned his crust with a magnificent 15 recovered balls (an extra 3 points to his tally) in his side’s one-nil victory over Olympiakos. Mario Gotze, another of our highlighted players, returned a 7 point haul after teeing up Kevin Grosskreutz to score the crucial thunderous goal that kept Dortmund in the race for the last sixteen.

Rennan Bressan

The AC Milan players could be somewhat forgiven for a lacklustre performance given recent worries about their colleague Antonio Cassano’s state of health. The runner up spot, barring a disaster, is the least the Rossoneri should expect from their Champions League group and a second half penalty from Bressan rescued a 1-1 draw for BATE Borisov after Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted for the third game running.

I'm sorry Doos 🙠.. I did mention yesterday about it needing 2 more players to fill the spaces, but you may have missed it. Don't generally feel comfortable about telling people about cups for cash prizes, as it's a bit of a taboo on here, as people don't want to part money with people they don't know in real life.

McNulty was gathering people on the chat aswell, but i assumed you probably saw it and thought it wasn't your cup of tea. If i'd known you wanted to take part, you know i would've told you straight away

Sorry about that once again ðŸ™

In the Brazilian league, there's this GK that takes all of the team's free kicks and penalties. He's scored something like 100 goals in his career.

Yeah I played La Liga last year...it sucked for that reason. No way you could get both. They didn't have enough 4mil players to stock bench positions. Surprisingly though most of the bargain players were Barca guys that would NEVER see the pitch.

This got lost on tail end of last thread so...

Morning All, I mentioned this yesterday but Im throwing out a shorter version today as Im still in a PICKLE….

My Team has 5 injuries, my 3 strikers are all fit and RVP is not one of them – Ade/Aguero/Sturridge.

    Options are…

A – I can field 11 players this week and its going to cost me 4 points (This option would have a punt on Lamps as captain).

B – I field 11 players this week with RVP its going to cost me 8 points.

    C – I field 10 players with RVP and 4 point hit 🙂

D – Give up, take a holiday, get out of dodge

        Gerrard/VDV/Ramsey/Nani/Ferguson

So you've got one short term problem in ShawX and 4 long term ones, on the basis that 4 of those problems will need addressing soon anyway I'd be inclined to take the 8 point hit, you should get 4 of those back even if your players do nothing - so I would go for options B but only if they're transfers that make good long term sense.

This looks like a fun one to sort out.

Picking Ferguson has come to bite you in the arse (can't say I'm upset about that).

Gerrard, Boyata, de Laet and Ferguson are the ones you need to kick. I'm not sure who the 5th is (unless you're counting Shawcross).

I wouldn't touch your front 3, getting RvP is not going to solve the problem - get that transfer in later. You have Aguero so you have a hitter.

So Gerrard out for Silva/Mata would be my first move, then I'd look at a defender for Boyata with the change.

I was counting Shawcross yes.... I know there's no news yet but its very possible he could be out this weekend.

I think Gerrard and De laet are first out the door (boyata will at least come back at some point if I'm lumbered with him as 3rd sub).

Why Silva/Mata over Lamps? He's hit a bit of form and didnt play last night.

Totally take on board what your saying about the strikers - If RVP had played 90 mins last night I wouldn't even be thinking about 8 point madness, but his 30 min cameo suggests he will start against WBA ðŸ™

A for me. IMO you can rely on high-priced mids to give you 175+ points over the course of the season (barring fitness). Rotating defenders makes sense.

What would you view as more important over the next bunch of games United attacking players or United defensive players?
My thinking is that it may be more important to invest in defence whilst there are uncertainties surrounding attacking players starting place (Nani, Chica, Welbz) potential for reverse OOP (Rooney) and injury (Cleverly, Young).
Meanwhile at the back there are 3 'nailed on' options (De Gea, Evra and Vidic) with potential of a chepie if you don't mind him missing the odd game (Jones) or an uber cheapie if you don't mind making the transfer in a few weeks (Evans).

Yeah i'd probably keep for the week.
I can play 3 of my defenders each week for the next 10 weeks who have good fixtures when I have Jones in for Kompany, Jones playing all 10 weeks, think it is a better short/mid-term option.

Often happens with United 'keepers. First choice is given a rest, and the second choice is given a game for 'easy' home games, which is why I think De Gea is a no-no in FPL terms. He'll get rested for some (only a few though) easy games where you'll obviously want him to play.

It can sometimes be a tad boring when you have plans to save a transfer, but do you feel any transfers should be done this week as opposed to GW12?

    Krul (Vorm)
    Bosingwa Simpson Ward (Kompany DeLaet)
    Silva VDV Petrov Walters (Dyer)
    Suarez RVP Sturridge
    Bank: 4.0

Keepers rotate fairly well apart from next week. I'll hope Vorm gets plenty of save points vs Man U at home.
Defence looks decent for this week, with Ward at home to Wigan and Bosingwa vs Rovers. So I feel defensive moves can wait until GW12
Midfield has Petrov/Dyer, but Petrov is home to Stoke so feel he should stay 1 more week.
RVP is on fire, Suarez has Swansea at home and still think Sturridge is worth keeping for now.

    Result: Save transfer.

Any moves you think should happen this week as opposed to next? Players such as Wilkinson, McAuley, Drenthe, Bendtner, Sess etc are better suited from GW12 onwards.

I think you're right to save the transfer, there's nothing that absolutely needs to be done this week and given the international break all sorts of problems could crop up that it would be useful to have two frees to sort out.

Very similar team and situation KC 🙂

Given that you have 4.0 in the bank, and I'm unsure what you intend doing with it. Would you not consider getting Rooney/Aguero for Suarez or Mata/Nani for Petrov/Walters.

While they seem a bit 'transfer for the sake of a transfer' I think the 4m can be better spent.

Overall though, I'd probably save it and use the money to get Baines in next week (this is my plan - for Bosingwa since I 'only' have 2.7m).

Really? Didn't know that. I guess I've only watched Everton twice this season and Baines was on set pieces for both games. But I still think Baines has the priority over set pieces, a bit like what's going on at Arsenal between RVP and Arteta.

Touching, a bit of perspective when all we hear is about overpaid pre madonnas (Tevez anyone?)

this shows up the whole "over celebrating" after scoring as well. A rule that needs to be changed to "inciting violence" as that is what the powers that be mean surely.

    Given, Vorm
    Kompany, Brown, Wilkinson, Simpson, NTaylor
Silva, Van der Vaart, Ramsey, Cabaye, Dyer
    Van Persie, Aguero, Adebayor

Can anyone advise me on the weak points of my team?

I'm trying to plot some future transfers. At the moment thinking of downgrading Adebayor to Ba to free up funds to improve defence. Would also like to upgrade Given, but don't know who to.

ba is a good choice this week but has some tricky fixtures after that so id be inclined to save your transfer and have 2 for the international break

That looks like a fantastic team. I wouldn't go for Ba at this point given his fixtures, especially if it's adebayor you're downgrading (he hasn't done much in the last couple of games, but he has some of the best fixtures going forward). The only one I might change is NTaylor, but that's only because you already have Vorm, and doubling up on defense might be risky. Especially since this is around the time in the season that teams start to figure out the newly promoted teams, and their performance tends to drop.

If you do have the money, I might also be tempted to switch Cabaye for Walters or Drenthe in the next few weeks. Again, Newcastle have fixtures stacked against them, and I'm also not sure how good Cabaye is as a fantasy player. Little bid of the modric syndrome going on - fantastic in real life, not sure about fantasy returns though.

Nice team dude, ade>sturridge would free up some funds &give you chelsea coverage, but ade has great fixs and is still under priced so definitely no harm sticking with him either. I wouldnt be falling over myself about given & cabye, but suppose they're solid enough on paper... Given>howard & cabaye to brunt/drenthe/walters as mentioned above, but they wouldnt be dramatic improvements either so you look nicely setup

I will be able to buy him back at the same price i sold him for if i do it now.

How does my team look for next GW? I'm looking for ways to improve soon if anybody has any ideas.

    Krul
    Bosingwa, Simpson, Enrique
Silva, Anderson, Van der Vaart, B.Johnson
    Van Persie, Adebayor, Rooney

    Vorm, N.Dyer, N.Taylor, Kompany

I already made my 1 free transfer this week (Aguero to Van Persie) and am hoping to avoid taking a 4pt hit. If I could I'd like to switch Anderson to Walters or Sessegnon and maybe N.Taylor to Wilkinson. What are your thoughts?

llamaZA, with regards to your suggestion above, I feel Baines costs too much and always reluctant to go with defenders due to their potential attacking abilities.

Instead my plan is to have a budget defence (apart from Kompany) and play it by ear.

The only transfer that stands out as a possible for me is:
    Petrov > Ramsey.

However, Petrov could still do something at home to Stoke and only having 1 free transfer over Int Break vs 2 has me thinking as well.

Although a midfield of: VDV Silva Walters Ramsey Dyer looks pretty damn good.

I'm playing him one last week I think, then he's out, have him or Hoolahan but Hoolahan has let me down twice, whereas Bannan has only let me down once so far, so it's his turn.

I don't know whether he'll play though to be honest, might be likely to get a cameo as well...if I were you I'd play Pilkington!

Yeah my current pairing is vorm & scez... Scez needs to go obviously, gamble gone wrong from a gw2 wildcard... But torn on wjether to trade him for krul & have an extra 0.8 to use elsewhere, or splash the cash on timmay howard for evertons nice fixs.

On a similar note, drebthe looks much better value than baines yeah? Beraing in mind he will still get 1 pt per CS?

Don't understand the Baines hype, I'd go Drenthe. And given fixtures I wouldn't go Krul tbh, just a matter of whether Howard is the best of the rest.

Well Bos, Enrique, Simpson will do you this week, but yeah the DeLaet to Wilkinson next week looks a decent move.

I sold Best the other week, think there are better options out there.

Liking the midfield, no problems there at all... assuming Dyer will be benched most games.
