Another game, another appearance in the centre of midfield for Wayne Rooney. Roberto Mancini is confident on David Silva’s fitness ahead of the game at QPR, while Steven Gerrard is making steady progress from an infected ankle problem:

Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for Wayne Rooney after another game in central midfield for the United forward in last night’s Champions League win over Otelul Galati. Fergie admitted injuries to others played a part in his thinking, though went on to say Rooney is more than capable of excelling in the role:

I think he was our best player. He showed great awareness of that role. His selection of passes at times was very good and showed great energy and determination – we got a really good performance out of him tonight. We had injuries and that is one of the reasons we played him there. Cleverley is injured, Carrick is injured, Darren Fletcher played on Saturday but it was better he played next Saturday. It was an option for us and a good option because he has all the qualities you need to be a central midfield player.

Rooney had no qualms about playing in a deeper role, revealing after the game:

I played a lot there when I was younger. You get a lot of the ball but we had to defend at times. If the manager asks me to do it, I will do it. It’s up to him.

United’s options up front were diminished last night after Michael Owen limped off after just eleven minutes. Fergie revealed post-match that Owen suffered a thigh injury but reckons it’s too early to put a timescale on any length of absence.

The sight of David Silva limping out of Man City’s Champions League tie at Villarreal would have worried his Fantasy owners no end last night. While City have yet to comment on the issue today, Roberto Mancini was a little reassuring after the game:

I don’t think this is serious. He took a knock on his back. Also we play again in 60 hours against QPR. I think he can recover well.

Kenny Dalglish has today revealed Steven Gerrard is responding well to treatment on his infected ankle. The Reds skipper missed last weekend’s win at West Brom and is also out of this weekend’s home clash with Swansea, while Jamie Carragher faces a late fitness test ahead of the game with Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Since they found the infection, Steven has really been progressing extremely well. Everything is positive for him. They found the infection and I suppose it’s a wee bit like flu – you know you’ve got it, but you don’t know where it came from. But they are treating and it is responding really well, so it’s positive for him. It is nothing more sinister.

Gabriel Obertan faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up a toe infection. The Newcastle winger has been an almost ever-present in his side’s unbeaten start to the season but reports suggest he could be out for up to a month with the problem. Sylvain Marveaux seems the favourite to replace him- at 4.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) he offers good value at a cut-price rate but has tough run of fixtures on the horizon.

Chelsea received a boost today ahead of their weekend trip to Blackburn. Rovers centre-half Scott Dann has been ruled out of the Ewood Park clash, having failed to recover from a calf problem, though is expected to return after the international break. Michel Salgado, Ryan Nelsen and Vince Grella are also unavailable.

Momo Diame may be in line for a surprise return to the Wigan fold for the trip to Wolves. The midfielder was taken off early in last weekend’s home loss to Fulham after a couple of hefty challenges and Roberto Martinez had feared the worst but he’s responded to treatment and could play a part at Molineux, according to reports.

Alex McLeish admitted that Barry Bannan is feeling the pressure after off-field issues forced the club to suspend the young Scot a fortnight ago. Bannan is now available for selection ahead of this week’s clash with Norwich but Big Eck conceded :

He’s back in the fold but you can’t expect somebody to come in singing and dancing and laughing as if nothing’s happened. He’s feeling it a bit and he wouldn’t be human if he wasn’t. But he’s back in and the lads I’m sure will be as friendly and hospitable to Barry as they normally are.

Andrei Arshavin was refreshingly frank with the admission that his performances since joining Arsenal have been less than impressive. The Russian’s frustrating displays have made him a bit-part player at the Emirates, with the likes of Gervinho establishing himself ahead of Arshavin in the pecking order:

Speaking honestly, I think my performances for Arsenal have been average. I’ve done some good things, but I don’t assess my game on goals or assists. I look at the whole picture. Normally when I’m on the pitch I take control of the game but I haven’t really done that here. I’m an extra tool in the team rather than the main one, so it’s been difficult.

Reports suggest both David Vaughan and Seb Larsson have suffered groin problems ahead of the trip to Man United, though both are expected to be fit for the Old Trafford clash. Steve Bruce confirmed Simon Mignolet is expected to be out for a couple of months, while John O’Shea is out for two to three weeks.

    My Roo observations

Roo isn't really playing a mid behind the striker position. Nothing at all like the position VDV plays. His great passes are out wide to the wings (important but second assist material). These passes aren't the Fabergas thru the middle killer type. He's not mixing in and coming in late like Lampard. (Anderson is) His position is more the Xabi Alonso type that is so important but isn't FPL gold by any means. And it will take time for him to get as good as Alonzo at the position. His biggest plus is that he is on pens for MU. Not worth the 12mill anymore. That said I struggle to drop him because He must move back to Striker soon. Struggling for 2 goals against the opposition that was served up last night isn't gonna win squat.

Give him a couple of weeks. Once Cleverly, Anderson and Fletcher are back (they might all be back after the international break), Rooney should move back in front. This also coincides with a great run of fixtures, so I'd stick with him.

          Darren Fletcher would disagree.

Fletcher has won the league many times, is what Ibra is trying to point out

but more importantly, SAF might be able to sort out the midfield, but maybe that is by throwing Rooney in there to plug the leak.

if SAF plays Rooney in midfield at home to Sunderland, I am afraid he will have trouble justifying his FPL price tag

    Thoughts on this team?

    Vorm Given
    Kompany Enrique Ward Simpson Woodgate
    VDV Silva Ramsey Walters Ferguson
    Suarez Ade Aguero

Already used my transfer for the week. Planning Aguero to Roon after the break (maybe RVP if he comes through unscathed) and then downgrading given and ward to free up cash for a Ade to Torres in about 4 weeks when chelsea's fixtures look up.

    Yes? No? Other suggestions?

Struggling to get 11 on the pitch this week...

Kompany banned, Cleverley def out, Shawcross/Tiote doubts too, leaves me with two fit subs one of which is fine (Simpson) the other of which will score little (N Taylor)...

Can't sell Vinnie, Cleverley prob only out for a week then I reckon he's nailed on and cheap, so does Shawcross>Jones makes sense, or Enrique? Jones has the better fixtures... Then next week Bos>Shawcross/Wilkinson?

For the next couple of weeks, Evans looks nailed on for starts so no. Moving on though, Jones should get much more game time, so he is worth it. Depends on the rest of your team, and how many transfers you'll have available.

Throwing down the W/C next week, so may as well take one more risk this week I think. 4 point hits seem okay til you do the math and realise you never actually gain more than you lose 90% of the time.... probably will just risk it, have Dyer and Brown as nailed on starters still anyway for cover of a couple of points.

At the start of the week I was thinking it was nailed on I would sell Bosingwa for Jones, providing he got through the midweek game unscathed. However, I’m contemplating sacking that off and saving two for next week instead.. That way I can ship one of the Newcastle boys and/or de Laet, plus Petrov. As much as I like United’s fixtures and Jones as a player, they do look shaky at the back. Is there anyone else thinking of keeping Bosingwa and ignoring United defensively or is it just me?

It is a pretty handy fixture isn’t. Liverpool aren’t fans of Stamford Bridge either in the gameweek after and then they have Wolves. I am slightly worried that Bos will get the chop, but AVB seems pretty defiant to me in his approach.

    Hi all,

I'm currently stuck with Balotelli as one of my strikers, as I had to use my transfer this week to get rid of Young. This leaves me with no United cover for this GW.

Is there anyone here who believes Balo may well start against QPR?
Or is it a good idea to take a 4 point hit and bring in Hernandez?

I normally do not take a hit to get rid of a fit player, but with Rooney playing in his new role, a move for Hernandez may soon prove be a permanent one...

      Hi

I have posted below about my own Balo issues as I do not think he will play. However, Mancini seems to do the opposite of what I think so who knows.

I am contemplating Balo to Hernandez but have the cash available. Given your situation it is trickier. Who can you afford as a straight swap from Balo. Welbeck punt?

Stoke aren't good in producing CS far from home, especially after Europa League. I'd rather get another defender with good fixtures now and after a few weeks, with no other players needed to be changed, swap ShawX for a cheaper STK defender (Wilkinson or Higginbotham, who is nearing full match fitness). I've brough ShawX in just a week ago :\.

    Thoughts on this team?

    Vorm Given
    Kompany Enrique Ward Simpson Woodgate
    VDV Silva Ramsey Walters Ferguson
    Suarez Ade Aguero

Already used my transfer for the week. Planning Aguero to Roon after the break (maybe RVP if he comes through unscathed) and then downgrading given and ward to free up cash for a Ade to Torres in about 4 weeks when chelsea’s fixtures look up.

    Yes? No? Other suggestions?

I am currently engaged in the brain bending process of trying to work out how, in 4 or 5 transfers, my current squad, designed with the cut and thrust of the early season in mind, can be morphed into a Christmas-intended, rotation proof team to batter its way through the Xmas period and be wildcarded out of existence soon after.

I will post results soon, but I fear that my Aguero-Rooney-Van Persie frontline may be toast over this period. Aguero and RVP, in particular, are just too obvious rotation candidates to last out this period.

    Team for this week
    Hennessey (Vorm)
    Bosingwa, Simpson, Enrique (Kompany, Ntaylor)
    Bannan, Ramsey, VDV, Silva, (Dyer)
    RVP, Rooney, Sturridge.

0.8 in bank. Planning to downgrade Bosingwa to Wilkinson/JEvans but Blackburn isn't good defensively so Bosingwa might still offer some attacking potential. Hold off transfer and have 2 after the break? or what else would you do?

What to do about Balo? My ploy to bring in Balotelli has completely backfired. I thought he would play the two league games and miss the CL encounter. the opposite looks likely. I have 1.5 in the bank and my FT.

I also have Silva and Kompany so looking to make a change to ensure I can put a decent team out (I am also concerned about another Nani benching). What say you?

I am contemplating Balo to Hernandez

    Team linked. Many thanks

Balo > Hernandez looks alright. Don't quite like the looks of Krul though now that Newcastle's fixtures have toughen up. Other than that I think your mid is pretty solid and looks like you're set on keeping Nani for awhile

Funny you mention Nani as his place is under review but fixtures are holding sway of me at the moment. Not really sure who I would bring in for him as I want to retain the three big hitters in mid. Mata would be the only real option and I am not sure he offers any value, given I have Sturridge.

Yeah I've seen GW 12 as I had Krul and Vorm together prior to my wildcard. Aside from GW 12, my other concern is GW 13 Swa v AVL and NEW v MU. Not to mention a GW 16 clash between the both of them. Decided to bring in Begovic instead for Krul after all that

I'm a similar position as you, see above... I could have chosen any of the three City players against Wolves, so the gamble didn't exactly pay off...

It just feels like a bad idea to take a hit to bring out a fit Balo before an away fixture against QPR. However, if I could do it without a 4 point hit, I would bring in Hernandez for sure.

I have almost 4 mill available, so I can bring in anyone. However, as I have already transferred Mata in for Young due to Young's injury, Hernandez (or anyone else) will cost me a 4 point hit.

Jones. This very page is full of the kind of problems that you can get into when you go for a player with serious rotation risk like Evans.

Jones is completely free from this, of course, but much better. Worth bearing in mind that both will be rested over Christmas though.

Yes, but at the same time I think Ferguson may prefer Jones to Evans at CB when Rafael/Smalling are fit. Too much of a headache for defensive issues. The back line hardly bears fruit this year - had Kompany, Bosingwa, Shawcross and Vorm in the starting lineup last week; all at home, and I got only 3 pts. Biggest FPL disappointment of the season.
