Matchday Four of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game came to a close last night with another eight fixtures across the continent. There are plenty of talking points for us to pour over before the tournament resumes in just under three weeks time…

Christian Eriksen

Nicklas Bendtner may reckon he’s one of the world’s very best but, judging by the performance of Eriksen, he may not even be the best young Dane. Frank de Boer’s side sailed to a 4-0 victory (the biggest of the Matchday, level with Barcelona) over Dinamo Zagreb. Eriksen’s two assists -both, of course, coming from a pair of nice, simple backheels- more than rewarded those following our Watchlist but his UCL point tally was bettered by team-mates Siem De Jong on 11 (goal and assist) and Gregory Van Der Wiel on 12 (goal and clean sheet).

Mario Balotelli

His first game back from a three-game suspension saw Balotelli picked as Roberto Mancini’s preferred striker for the trip to Villarreal. Balotelli continued his rich vein of form, grabbing a goal and an assist in the 3-0 win over the out-of-sorts Spanish side. Sergio Aguero came on for a brief sixteen minute cameo and Edin Dzeko played no part- this could affect Macnini’s thinking ahead of the trip to QPR this weekend.

Wayne Rooney

Another game in central midfield last night is not what his Fantasy owners want to hear. Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen started up front against Otelul, suggesting Fergie was intending to keep Javier Hernandez fresh for this weekend’s game at home to Sunderland- Owen’s withdrawal after just eleven minutes somewhat scuppered those plans, though, as he limped off to be replaced by the Mexican. Rooney did cap his performance with a goal, however, but United clearly lack bite without him leading the line.

Mario Gomez

Given his form over the last 12 months the fact Gomez was egregiously ignored in the recent Ballon d’Or shortlist is hard to understand. Not one to wallow on this more than unfortunate omission, the German striker boosted his 2011 scoring record even more by grabbing a first half hat-trick against Napoli. The Italian side fought back to 3-2 in the second half, though Bayern held on for victory, as both sides finished the game with ten men.

Seydou Doumbia

Prior to this Matchday the Ivorian striker was an early leader in the Champions League goalscoring charts. Any of the European Fantasy managers who hopped on board the Russian Premier League top scorer’s bandwagon will have been less than pleased to see CSKA Moscow draw 0-0 away at Trabzonspor. Only to compound measures, Doumbia picked up two yellow cards and was subsequently sent off- he picked up a UCL minus score and is now suspended for the next Matchday.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi breaks the double century barrier for Barcelona and at the next available opportunity his biggest rival Cristiano Ronaldo makes sure he sets a landmark by scoring both goals in a 2-0 win away at Lyon and passing the 100 goal mark. What’s absolutely astounding is it only took the world’s most expensive player 105 games in the white of Madrid to reach this tally, nigh on a goal a game. Two set pieces half way through each period did it – a thundering free kick in the first half and a self-won penalty in the second.

Diego Milito

This miss encapsulates Milito’s form of late and how this game panned out for those in attendance at the San Siro last night – it was not a Milanese dream by any measure of the imagination. After Walter Samuel gave Inter the lead the Argentinian forward redeemed himself by scoring Inter’s second goal in their 2-1 win over Lille. The French champions are now clinging on by the skin of their teeth but as good as gone already.

Rodrigo

Last season he was warming the benches at Bolton alongside Adam Bogdan and Robbie Blake. Now he’s keeping Paraguayan striker, and Benfica legend, Oscar Cardozo out of the Benfica side and is scoring in the Champions League. Things don’t get much different for Rodrigo; his goal in Benfica’s 1-1 draw at home to Basel was an almighty crash-bang-wallop following a game of head tennis in the box.

Might need to sell James Rodriguez and Nagatomo now. Can't keep ignoring Gomez either and the plum tie he has at home to Villareal in the next round

Never ignore Gomez - he's at the centre of every Bayern attack and has improved dramatically in all aspects of his game in the last season and a half.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, however, will now be out for at least six weeks (i.e. until the German winter break) with a broken collar-bone. He collided with Gökhan Inler in the 3-2 victory over Napoli.

Looking for some advice. Was planning to save my transfer this week but after watching Rooney last night I'm tempted to do Rooney to Aguero? Good move or save the transfer. Or should I be looking to ship out Bos or Nani first??

    Team is:

    Begovic (Vorm)
    Bos Enrique Simpson (Gabbidon Naylor)
Nani VDV Ramsey Walters (N Dyer)
    RVP Sturridge Rooney

I would anyway. No Man City, Silva a doubt so no point doing Nani to him and the Utd lads reckon Rooney'll be playing behind again.

    RMT

    Begovic
    Simpson Enrique Bosingwa
    VdV Adam Silva Ramsey
    Sturridge RVP Suarez

    (subs: Dyer, Naylor, Kompany, Vorm)

My bench is looking very week, and the latest on Silva does not bode well, but I’ve already taken a 4pt hit to get RVP back in.
Anybody see any more room for improvement? Is another 4pt hit worth the gamble or is this team good to go?

What you thinking on the defensive front LT?

I also have Enrique, Bos and Komp but going forward I need to downgrade one of them I reckon. Really want to get Jones in for Man U's good run of fixtures but that obviosuly wouldn't be a downgrade.

As for this week i'd leave it. Your front 7 should do some damage (even if Silva doesn't play) so no need to take hits on what might be a bench player.

      RvP or Suarez for captain...

        Was going to cap RVP.

Re my defence, Baines on the basis of Evertons fixtures but in hindsight a big gamble. Agree re Jones, although Evans also tempting and am looking at the option of bringing in De Gea at some point too

Just noticed I have enough cash to do Sturridge > Aguero.
Aguero is 100% to start at the weekend I assume, does he then go on international duty or is it only Europe because of the play-offs? Following that City have NEW which is good but with Napoli 3 days later could he be rested again?
The Manchester sides are a fantasy nightmare this season.

Don't really like AJ. Good one week punt but you'll spend weeks not knowing if he'll start or not. I go Welbeck in earlier in the season and even though he got me points I was still considering getting rid of him every week. Better go for Drenthe or Sess next week, maybe use the Gerrard cash to upgrade a striker? I assume you own VDV?

On my WC, need to catch up with my Mini league leader, comments needed:

    De Gea (Vorm)
Enrique, J Evans, Simpson (Wilkinson, Brown)
    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Walters (Johnson)
    Aguero, RVP, Ba

Had Rooney instead of Aguero but don't like the fact he's playing deep.
    Was thinking possible other options:

    Ba > Sturridge, Bentner
Walters or Ramsey > Larsson, Sess, Drenthe

Yo Fratboy, why such a horizontal move? I know Yaya is more nailed on than Milner.

But what with Silva doubtful and Nasri over-worked, Milner seemed a good bet for me. Also, Milner 15 mins = Yaya 45 mins imo.

Looking more long term. I have faith in Yaya. Milner is too much of a risk, thought he would play last week but he didn't and looks like he'll miss this week too. Too many doubts in my team, needed more certainty.

been scanning the fixtures, he seems to start every game. He was taken off a little early last night too so figured he'd be fine for the weekend. Silva will play this weekend imo and Milner played 90 minutes last night. Adam Johnson is almost definitely getting a start this weekend too.

Yaya will deffo play this weekend imo and with him scoring 2 last night he'll have bags of confidence 🙂

Ok makes sense. Although with de Jong also in the squad it is possible that Yaya could be rested at some point. Someone else could drop back to play alongside de Jong. You made the percentage move

He usually plays well with De Jong, who knows, maybe he will get rested? It's a good long term move for me for the next few weeks, nice that I can afford it.

    Hello boys!

I keep tinkering my wc team and I'm little stuck with r.taylor situation. I see people buying him in at the same time that I'm planning to cash on him because of his coming fixtures.

I'm just wondering are we gonna see major sell out in coming weeks and his price come down (like rooney atm!), cos I could be tempted to get him back somewhere around gw15-16?

Losing a lot of value if his price just stays up, a'la bosingwa. Then again, if so, I might just get simpson/santon depending their situation..

Am I mad to include also kompany and enrique to my team and then not to play them?
Next six starting gw12, Kompany plays only 12, 14, 17 and enrique only 15, 17.
Just thinking it might be good to have that kind of guys in my bench, just to secure my punt on evans for example.

I don't know if I'm actually looking for some real advice, maybe just putting my toughts on "paper" 🙂

I'd cash in and take the £ as profit in the bank ... he'll struggle in the next few weeks as you say and people will not keep putting him in then. He may even lose his place - quit while you're ahead.

Am I right in thinking you're telling me you're tempted to bench Jose Enrique at home to Swansea? Don't be silly.

You need cheaper players to warm the bench to allow you to get big hitters up front. There's no point having Enrique & Kompany on the bench when that could be Barnett & Simpson. That's a difference of about 3.5m!!

Me silly? Of course not 🙂 I'm talking gw12 =>
You are prob right, no reason to get greedy with r.taylor, payday is coming!

For Ginkapo; I have enrigue atm and bought him in when he was 5.0, so not too keen cashing him now and then buying back later.
Planning to have wilko + walter from stoke, that's enough for me.

If you picked Evans then you need to have a very solid first sub, so its not that bad to have kompany on the bench, but could you not get enrique in later and get some more stoke in there

Bit of both I think 😉

I have Kompany and Enrique and personally I think they are as good as you are going to get for the money so keep.

I would deal with your Santon/Simpson situation....Santon urgently....bring in Wilkinson, cheap as chips, seems nailed on and has a decent run of games!

If they're your only worries I think you'll be fine....I just need to decide to keep Rooney or not! hmmm!

no no no no, is my english really that bad? I'm thinking that I might get simpson or santon to my team somewhere in gws 15-16 if r.taylors price stays so high....

I'm keeping rooney for next 3, if situation is looking bad then rooney to aguero in gw14.
        That the plan today anyway..

Is Ramsey playing any international fixtures during the break? A bit concerned by Wengers comments that he is tired. Wouldn't want Silver and Ramsey to be out because that will mean swansea's Taylor and Dyer comming on and I already have Suarez and Enrique. Four players in one game, not ideal

The fear, I suppose you could call it, that we'd be all lumped together as a GB team (not Olympics, but all football) in the future at some point. FIFA have said it could be a one-off (but who trsuts them?), but it sets a precedent if we're all one team now for the Olympics, then why not for all football.

Fair point, but I just think football can be a little different in that respect, compared to athletics. I don't really care that much though, for a few reasons.
          1. I don't care who wins gold/silver/bronze for football at the Olympics, it's not a 'full tournament', if you will.
          2. I'd care less about a GB team than a Welsh team.
          3. I think the team GB football will turn into a David Beckham rim-fest. Something I'm not particularly interested in viewing.

If Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish players want to play there's nothing really the associations can do, or will do, about it. So it doesn't really matter what their stand is. If a player gets selected and wants to play, he will.

Morning guys. Need to sort my team out for this week - some help would be much appreciated.

I’m happy with my strikeforce but Petrov needs to go and I’ve got Senderos not playing / Kompany suspended and difficult fixtures after Newcastle game / Brown facing Man Utd this week:

    Given
    Brown Simpson Wilkinson
    Petrov VDV Silva Nani
    RVP(c) Sturridge Suarez(v)

    Bench: Vorm Moses Kompany Senderos
    Bank: £0.0m

Any ideas? Was thing thinking of the following for a 4pt hit?

    Kompany –> J Evans
    Petrov –> Walters

    Any thoughts?

Don't do either of those this week imo. Hold Petrov for one more game. Your defence is fine for this week and getting rid of Kompany is silly.

Nice team for this week. Save the transfer imo.

Drenthe for me is still a punt but Ramsey is a good safe option. It would be good to have both I reckon

good news for sturridge and mata fans

Scott Dann won't return for Rovers until after the international break. Nelsen, Salgado & Grella all miss Chelsea clash ....not sure who that leaves in Blackburn's defence.

could also mean lots of save pts for Robinson owners.

Chelsea SHOULD smash Blackburn. But will they? Torres has looked out of sorts and Sturridge has been average of late. Nothing has really worked so far at Chelsea and Mata has only just started getting fantasy points

Chelsea have had no problem scoring though. Only failed recently against QPR but that was with 9 men.

    Now the champs league fixtures are over anybody care to give me some advice on my team;
    Vorm (Kenny)
    Warnock, Ward, Simpson (Brown, Kompany)
    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Petrov (Dyer)
    RVP, Adebayor, Sturridge
4.3 in the bank, no FTs.

Think I could do with some Man U in there but who? My worst players have the better fixtures this week.
Also considered Sturridge > Aguero but unsure if its worth a hit.

looks fine. Can't see much points from your stop gap players. Relying heavily on your big boys
