Having announced his return from injury with “that” goal against West Brom in gameweek eleven, Thomas Vermaelen leaps into our newly-updated Watchlist rankings. With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon for the foreseeable future, the Belgian seems poised for investment as the new-look Arsenal begin to click into place.

Absent for two months with an ankle problem, Vermaelen’s return to the Gunners back-four saw Arsene Wenger’s side record back-to-back clean sheets at the Emirates a fortnight ago. A goalless draw with Marseille in the Champions League was followed by a 3-0 canter over the Baggies, with Arsenal hinting at the “maturity” Arsene Wenger recently spoke of. Vermaelen’s first start since gameweek two coincided with Arsenal’s first clean sheet in the league since gameweek six and saw him return a 15 point haul for his Fantasy owners, with 3 bonus points also picked up for his display at both ends of the pitch.

Despite a wealth of centre-halves to choose from, Wenger tends to favour the Belgian when fit. Vermaelen is far more than just a conventional defender- though an Achilles injury blighted his appearances last term, he grabbed 7 goals in his debut campaign for Arsenal back in 2009/10 and has taken little time to serve a reminder of his attacking sensibilities.

A partnership with Per Mertesacker could flourish at the heart of the back-four, though the likes of Laurent Koscielny will also come into the equation, with Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci set to stay peripheral figures, perhaps only called upon when injuries deprive Wenger of first-choice options.

The loss of Cesc Fabregas is now behind them and with five wins in the last six league games, it’s clear the new summer signings are starting to gel. A look at the upcoming schedule (nor, FUL, wig, EVE, mci, avl, WOL, QPR) only offers more promise of Fantasy returns and with just one of the next eight fixtures posing any major difficulty, the 6.7 priced Vermaelen could provide a timely boost for any potential backers.

    Hint for WC users.

I did a little research on GW 12-19. I gave every team a grade from 1-3, 3 being the strongest and used that to get a little bit better insight on each teams upcoming fixtures. So if a club's schedule scores high their fixture list is LESS favourable than a low scoring team. Catch my drift?
Anyway, here is the final list:

    ARSENAL 14
    ASTON VILLA 20
    BLACKBURN 14
    BOLTON 14
    CHELSEA 17
    EVERTON 11
    FULHAM 17
    LIVERPOOL 16
    MANCHESTER CITY 16
    MANCHESTER UNITED 13
    NEWCASTLE 17
    NORWICH 18
    Q.P.R 16
    STOKE 15
    SUNDERLAND 15
    SWANSEA 17
    TOTTENHAM 13
    WEST BROMWICH ALBION 15
    WIGAN 17
    WOLVES 16

So if we think about teams scoring under 15 pts. as a base for your fantasy team up until January, the following 5 look best.

    ARSENAL 14
    BLACKBURN 14
    BOLTON 14
    EVERTON 11
    MANCHESTER UNITED 13
    TOTTENHAM 13

Mind you this is the sort of statistics you shouldn't be counting solely on (or even at all) since I didn't speculate each and every match, nor did I look at Home-Away form.

Why would you want Tim Cahill when Drenthe is 2.5m cheaper and is on a few set pieces.

Definitely, they wouldn't have been up there if I'd bet on each match.

    RMWCT

    Howard, Vorm
    Kompany, Jones, Brown, Naylor, Wilkinson
    Silva, VDV, Drenthe, Sessengon, Formica
    RVP, Rooney, Graham

Howard and Vorm have good rotation up until the second wildcard.
I plan to play Kompany and Jones every week with one of the other defenders.
Then I will rotate Formica and Graham who have perfect home/away rotation up until the second wildcard.

Silva is a must. I'd be tempted to downgrade Torres or Rooney and upgrade Moses as you might find that midfield a bit lightweight. Maybe Rooney to Chicharito if you still want United coverage. Moses to Eagles? I know O'Hara scored a bundle last GW, but is that likely to happen often?

Personally am running without United coverage until there attacking form looks better ... which with their fixtures coming up is looking pretty stupid actually!!

    RMAT:

    Gorilla (Komodo Dragon)
    Horse Rhino Hippo Moose (Zebra)
    Cheetah Bear Meerkat Ostrich (Toad)
    Giraffe Pelican(C) (Hyena)

I'm thinking Hippo to Salamander but it would be a 4 point hit...

Though Komodo and Dragon were 2 different players for a second there, that would have made your team daft!!

    looking at WC of
    vorm krul/ruddy
    hibbert brown kompany gabbidon simpson/mcauley
