It’s something of an understatement to suggest Leighton Baines has failed to live up to expectation this term. The top-scoring defender in last season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with a total of 178 points, Everton’s left-back started this season priced at 8.0 but so far has returned just 27 points from ten appearances, an average of 2.7 per game compared to 4.7 last time round.

His lack of any real returns has been a strange one- reason would suggest the departure of Mikel Arteta would only have increased Baines’ returns, given that he’s number one for set-pieces and spot-kicks, but the emergence of on-loan Royston Drenthe has currently put him firmly in the shade.

As a result, he’s dropped in ownership, down to just 6% but with David Moyes’ side encountering a strong run of upcoming fixtures, you’d think that if ever he was about to realise his potential, now is the time.

Using our own ICT Index and Opta stats available to members, we analyse his displays so far to ascertain just where, if at all, Baines has under performed.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Which are the best transfers for next week?

    a) Dunne -> P Jones (and save a transfer)
    b) Aguero -> Rooney (and save a transfer)
    c) Moses & Aguero -> Nani & Sturridge

    Westwood, Ruddy
    Dunne, Brown, Wilkinson, Woodgate, Simpson
    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Sinclair, Moses
    RVP, Adebayor, Aguero
    Bank 0.4m

Is 0.4 in the bank correct Jinswick? (I dont think you can afford a) or b) if it is).

I like option b) but would wait until after GW14 to make that move.

Getting Dunne out looks like a good move this week - but you need to keep some money in the bank if you are going to make a move for Rooney. Thought about Dunne --> Jagielka?

Really, why GW14? Aguero has (NOR) and Rooney (avl) that week. Surely better to do it in GW13? I think Dunne can wait till GW14 as Brown, Wilko and Woody all have great fixtures...?

Making the transfer after GW14 would mean you have Aguero for: NEW, liv, NOR and then Rooney for: WOL, qpr, ful...

Considering the other players you have, I agree that the Dunne transfer can wait - but if there is nothing more urgent required to your team (which I dont think there is) surely its a good opportunity to bring in someone with better fixures and give yourself some selection / formation options?

When Gordon comes back to full fitness I'd be worried that Westwood - no matter how excellent he has been - will be dropped.

I presume you mean for a defender as an alternative to McAuley?

There are a few decent options available at the moment. Depending on the rest of your team, you might consider: N Taylor, Wilkinson, Simpson or take your pick from the Norwich team.

Looks pretty solid already - I'd probably stick with McAuley (just to avoid doubling up on any particular team). A riskier option could be to go for Bramble - i'm not sure how quickly he's likely to start playing again but he'll be good value when he does.

With regards to this article, surely Baines success was coincident with Cahill's finishing... one King Timmy is flying high again Baines and his crossing will be a lot more effective?

Indeed. Cahill is one of the best headerer's in the game and was fantastic at finishing crosses. Did Cahill score more from corners though instead of crosses? Because Drenthe is now taking corners not Baines

P.S headerer's isn't in the dictionary but should be 🙂

I like that im not the only one thinking of bringin in Vermaelen. Hes a proven goalscorer (for a defender) and Arsenal have nice fixtures.
Having said that Id go with B, since you already have VDV and Ade, plus Drenthe good fixtures as well

    How's this look???

I want to bring in Vermaelen but don't know how.

I am thinking of downgrading Dzeko and upgrading BAE to Vermaelen because Dzeko has some shocking fixtures and probably won't start this weekend anyway.

    Ideas?

    Krul
    Brown, Jones, BAE
    Bale, Nani, Silva, Drenthe
    RVP, Dzeko, Adebayor

    Vorm, Eagles, Enrique, Simpson

Who you thinking to replace Dzeko with? Bendtner?

Thats a great comparison. Baines vs Vermaelen. The fact that the verminator is cheaper and plays for Arsenal is quite compelling, he also got 7 goals last year, so I would go for him. Baines is just an ok option because he is too expensive and Everton have no form at the moment.

keep in mind that more than 2 third of baines assists last season ended up on teh head of cahill for a goal, so cahill being out of form is affecting him badly, plus now it seems drenthe is sharing the Fk responsibilities with him. i went for vermaelen and the only scare i have is injury or rotation prior to CL games

Not sure on whether to hold on to Sturridge or ship him out now for Bendtner.

Sturridge has got Wolves @ Home next week so I might just hold on to him until after that game.
Then again I wouldn't want to be missing out on some potentially big points from Bendtner.

Having same thoughts re: Sturridge > Bendtner but also considering Klasnic. Not sure he will start v Liverpool and if he doesn't about the only thing saving him from the bench v Wolves - and an exit from my team - is that Chelski have an ECL game midweek before it.

Sit tight for now and see what happens in ECL. If he starts in that it's likely he will be rested that weekend anyway...

i dnt see bentner as someone who can score more than 1 goal per game so i dnt think u would miss much.
however with chelsea's recent form i wouldnt be surprised to see avb doing some drastic changes and pumping some experience in his team like malouda or kalou, while keeping sturridge as his jocker on the bench, because it was clear that chelsea are missing an impact sub.
if ur planning on keeping bentner for a while get him in, and if it dsnt go too well, bring ba in for him in 3 weeks when newcastle's horror run ends

stick with Sturridge. A 6.5m forward playing for Chelsea will surely return more points than similarly valued forwards for lesser teams. If it were Ba or Bendtner with a lean spell, you'd shrug and say "that's what you get for 6-7m".

Yes and no. Yes, it's the cheapest way to get Chelsea "cover", but he(Sturr) is going thru a lean spell at the moment. I can't see that getting any better vs LIV/newc/CITY/spurs. If he plays. yes, he has wolves, but keeping him for that game would be keeping him for the wrong reason.

Someone like Bendy has scored twice this week and will def get 90 min each week and has 4 better fixtures. So I'm witting with Sturr that has kek fixtures and no form...just because he is from Chelsea.

On top of that another drop in price for Sturr and he would be burning my ring.

At this stage, I think Bendtner is the more reliable option.

Sunderland may not be as sexy as Chelsea but I'm happier to go for the guy who isn't a rotation threat and is the main attacker on an average team rather than the bit part player in a top tier one.

I have 2 frees this week so will use one of them to get Bendtner in for Sturridge.

    Vorm. Kenny
    Jones, Enrique, Brown, Wilkinson, Simpson
    Lamps, VDV, Silva, Allen, BJohnson
    RVP, Hoillet, Dzeko

    thoughts i'm having are;
1)Downgrade Brown and get Vermaelen in for rotation threat Jones, but no unted coverage

2)Downgrade Jones or Enrique and get Sess/Drenthe/ Walters in for BJ + upgrade Hoilett to Bendy

3)Go all cheap at the back and get Rooney in for Dzeko

      How do you downgrade Brown?

I think 3 is the best idea in principle, but you need a couple of decent defs in your team. However, Nani or Rooney look good for points with Utd's upcoming schedule.

I think, ultimately, it boils down to how much you want Lamps in your team, as his price prohibits you from improving your strikers.

yeah I've been debating lamps for a while, but i like the idea of some chelsea coverage and sturridge has done nothing for me for a while as did mata earlier in the season. Def would prob be brown, simpson, Wilko, McCauley, Gabbidon

Then it has to be 3 really.

I'm just going to leave Chelsea alone period. Think Lamps is the only one worth having right now but too expensive for me as he ruins the balance in a team.

I think Drenthe and Pilkington cost as much as Lamps, or just a bit less actually, but offer better value in my opinion.

    Bosingwa to Brown or
    Hall to Wilkinson?

I will lose value on Bos if I don't ship him soon, but Hall is a non-player now Gabbidon is fit so is it best to get rid of him first? There's always the chance of injury to Terry/Ivan/Alex/Luiz which would give Bos his place back? Nothing in the bank so it's one or the other!
