Wayne Rooney should be available for Man United’s game with Benfica despite missing training. Neil Warnock hails the impact of Heidar Helguson, while Richard Stearman is expected to be sidelined after surgery on a broken wrist.

Sir Alex Ferguson dismissed any fears of an injury to Wayne Rooney in this afternoon’s pre-match Champions League press conference. Rooney and Jonny Evans had both missed training this morning ahead of the game against Benfica but the United boss said this afternoon:

We’ve got one or two knocks from Saturday. Jonny Evans has some tightness in his hamstring but will hopefully be okay tomorrow. Wayne’s got a few knocks and missed training today but should be okay. Chris Smalling trained this morning but won’t be available for tomorrow – he should be okay for Saturday [against Newcastle] and Anderson is out injured.

Richard Stearman is set to face a spell on the sidelines after Wolves confirmed he will undergo surgery on his broken wrist. The right-back has featured in every league game for his club this season but his absence could perhaps open the way for Roland Zubar to stake a first-team claim, having recently recovered from a groin problem. Alternatively, Stephen Ward moved to right-back at Goodison when Stearman was forced off, with Mick McCarthy sending on George Elokobi at left-back. Kevin Foley is still a couple of weeks away from a return.

Owen Coyle has revealed his disappointment following another lacklustre display saw his Bolton side beaten once again. The Trotters boss is far from happy with the lack of fighting spirit amongst his charges and judging by his scathing assessment, it would be no surprise if Bolton are set for a couple of changes this weekend.

The testament to anyone’s character is when you go out there on that pitch and you’re under the cosh, you need your big leaders to organise and be resilient. If you are compact and focused, the minimum you leave with is a draw – but we didn’t have enough of them to do that. They need to sit and analyse that and see if they feel they did their best in the second half. I’m not so sure that we all did.

Steve Harper has returned to Newcastle following a one-month loan deal at Brighton. Going the opposite direction is Kazenga Lua Lua, who has signed for the Seagulls on a permanent basis. He joins Gus Poyet’s side on a three-year deal, having been on loan there since the start of the season.

Kenwyne Jones has pleaded with Tony Pulis for a first-team start as Stoke’s poor league form continues. The August signing of Peter Crouch has seen Jones drift out of the picture, with the role of a second-half impact sub as good as it gets recently. Jones has failed to start a league match since gameweek three for the Potters but with five defeats in the last six, Pulis’ side are misfiring badly. Jonathan Walters has netted 4 time but Crouch has scored just twice so far- with a home clash against Blackburn up next, the Stoke boss may well be tempted to shake things up.

Reports suggest Adel Taarabt was unavailable for QPR last week after losing his passport while on international duty with Morocco. Taarabt has been a peripheral figure since gameweek seven, storming out of Craven Cottage after Neil Warnock subbed him off at half-time. He’s expected to return to the UK today, though with no goals or assists this season, his absence has hardly affected QPR of late.

Warnock hailed the impact of Heidar Helguson, after 5 goals in as many games disproved the doubters. Given a start in gameweek eight, Helguson has proved integral to his side’s goal threat and, with a double downing Stoke at the Britannia last weekend, his manager comparing his influence on the team to that of Bolton’s Kevin Davies:

I couldn’t buy anybody that’d have played as well as Heidar did. Impossible. He’s like a young pup at the minute, he’s really enjoying himself. Yeah, he’ll get injured, no doubt, but at the moment he’s on top of his game and the first name on the teamsheet. We don’t play three games a week in the Premier League and he gets proper rest.

Ah yes, his time is up at QPR anyway. His attitude stinks and the team seem to play much better without him, he has been a massive disappointment this season.

    GW13 Team

    Vorm (Ruddy)

    Wilkinson, Brown, Taylor (Enrique, Simpson)

    VDV, Silva, Nani, Ramsey Sinclair

    RVP (C) Adebayor (Agbon)

    3.1 mill in the bank

Anything else I can do that’s worth a 4 pointer? I was all set on Nani-Lamps but then cold feet and did a sensible De-Laet to Brown.

Top class in the air. I've said it all season, Taraabt out and the return of Mackie would transform them. Mackie is a very decent player already making an impact. Also Traore played right midfield, he used to play here at Portsmouth im told, Warnock praised him after the game.

Ya he has been very good signing, may be better in midfield as he has a brilliant cross and isn't the best defender. did cost us with a really poor pass against City that resulted with Sikva scoring. 5.5 bit expensive for a QPR defender though.

Good to see Mackie back after that terrible injury, the second goal Saturday was orgasmic, Barca would have been proud of it

Never played UCL fantasy before, and I've just set up a team pretty damn late in Matchday 5, so obviously not playing too seriously but want to dip my toe into the waters. Seems familiar yet different, defensive mids have a chance! So any tips for a newbie with this team?

Over 8 games I would be surprised if Baines can't make up 4 points on Kompany by penalties and assists. Don't expect Kompany to get many more CS because of City's attacking style which hasn't delivered that many yet anyway. I know everyone hate hits but in the end it comes down to the math, and I think the math agrees with you on this.

I hear you, but the odds of a goal/assist at bolton must be quite good for bainesy whereas a cleansheet for Kompany at Anfield is unlikely. I am really taking the punt on breaking even so that I can position myself nicely for the good run of Everton run games.

I would stay away until he scores a goal, which could reflect both Fergie's commitment to attack and the beginning of an FPL form period. You could probably afford missing a goal, whereas on the other hand you'd probably need more than 1 transfer to get him in and the cost of jumping the gun may exceed that.

I'm getting rid to be honest, not taking the risk personally. Getting in Vorm this week I think, he doesn't rotate amazingly with Krul, but no one really does apart from maybe Westwood, but he could be a rotation risk himself in a couple weeks with Gordon coming back!

I think you'd be hoping for some cheeky attacking points if anything... Wolves haven't kept a CS since GW3, and I don't see that changing. But he's not exactly using up valuable funds... I only got rid for Wilko to fund my Lampard move, but I wouldn't have got rid if I didn't need to.

Look pretty set fair there, maybe hold transfer for a double next GW? But I wonder if it would be worth playing Evans over Wilko? Even Stoke home form is pear-shaping, and I can't see Evans playing Tues, so must be a consideration for the barcodes at OT.If he doesn't start, chances are he'll miss out entirely, and Wilko can be first Def sub.

      Just a though.

Think i have just had an epiphany - give suarez the chop & replace him with dan the man sturridge... Full 3m cheaper and realistically looks like he will generte similar returns long term. No points hit involved.

Go for it! Kept faith with Suarez long enough until I realized he simply wasn't going to deliver the goals of a 9.5er. Sturridge will probably get similar goals and the extra 3 could potentially upgrade two mids, or help you towards an RVP + Rooney frontline ultimately...

Yep thats what im thinking. Sturridge obviously has the rotation threat hanging over him, but he's that greedy and explosive that when he plays he stands a great chance of scoring. And at 6.6 you can afford him to have a few 1 & 2 pointers.

I think i just might do it.

Cue suarez 10 points against city? Suerly not...

Sturridge is played as a RW by AVB and he prefers to be played CF, yet he scores a decent number of goals out of position already. As an owner, I was iffy about him over his dry spell in the last 3-4 GW - doubting how he's used not his talent - but the goal yesterday renews my faith in his prospects. Right now there's basically no other forward scoring for Chelsea so as their "best" forward at 6.6 he's a no-brainer.

Hmmm, maybe right wing isn't entirely accurate either as he's not exactly bombing in the crosses, but I'd describe his usage as a right forward, i.e. not as central as he wants to be. If AVB grants his wish, it could get explosive!

Yeah it was the goal yesterday that sealed it for me as well. Youd imagine that if the FPL game was reset now with updated prices, sturridge would be 8.5 - 9.5 so he's also grossly underpriced into the bargain, which is never a bad thing in my book.

Yeah I think 8.5 would be reasonable for Sturridge now. They just didn't think Drogba and Torres would underperform so badly. I predict RVP - Rooney - Sturridge will become extremely familiar reading once Spurs' fixtures dry up, say 5 GWs time.

That sounds likely... Rooneys inevitable scoring run will come eventually, and with utds fixs youd have to think sooner rather than later i.e. In the next 2 or 3 weeks which would dovetail nicely with ade being shipped out.

    1. Get rid of ramsey or brunt first?
    2. Is silva worth a 4 point hit for either of those 2 above this week?

My thoughts are ramsey first due to brunts set pieces, and "no" to a points hit for silva this week due to tough fix at anfield. Then again, there seems to be no such thing as a tough fixtures for city at the moment.

    Worth wildcarding to this team?
    Westwood Vorn

Both teams have ferguson in, the wilcard one could drop Baines for Richards and upgrade Ferguson to another midfielder.

Yeah I think Ba will be a great player to have in a couple weeks. You have frustrating players:

Adebayor, Rooney, Enrique, Ramsey. All capable of huge scores who haven't been fulfilling. Just take a deep breath and keep going.

I like the Jones transfer though, just hold on tight man, it's gotta get better with that team!

I brought Woodgate in a few weeks ago just in time to see Stoke's home form go south and now he doesn't even play this weekend. Injured or just dropped, anyone know ?

He has been awful so I wouldn't be surprised if he was dropped...

Does that improve Wilkinson's starting chances or are they unrelated?
