Last night’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game saw three sides guarantee their place in the knock-out stages, with plenty of surprise results once again. Here’s the lowdown on what proved to be an evening of frustration for both Manchester clubs…

Sergio Aguero

While European Fantasy managers will not have been happy to see Sergio Aguero benched for over eighty minutes in Man City’s defeat at Napoli, his FPL backers will be delighted. The Argentine came on for Edin Dzeko with just nine minutes remaining, while Mario Balotelli played the full ninety and scored once against for City. Ahead of this weekend’s trip to Liverpool, Balotelli is the only one of the strike trio to start both City’s last two matches- Aguero certainly looks likely to start at Anfield now, given his comparative freshness.

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguayan broke City’s hearts with a double as Napoli climbed above Roberto Mancini’s men with one match remaining. Cavani came into the game in poor form, having scored twice in his previous ten club appearances in all competitions but the Champions League seems to bring out the best in him- he’s now scored 4 goals in five games. A victory in Villarreal would clinch the runners-up spot for the Italian side, regardless of whether City manage to beat Bayern at the Etihad.

Dimitar Berbatov

Despite Sir Alex Ferguson claiming that Wayne Rooney would be fit for the game with Benfica, the striker missed out with a hip problem. Berbatov started his second Champions League game in a row and celebrated with a goal, as United came back from an early Phil Jones own goal to eventually play out a draw. Fergie’s deployment of Ashley Young was also intriguing- with Nani and Antonio Valencia given spots on the wings, Young tucked in behind Berbatov, a position he played on many occasions for Aston Villa last season. With Rooney remaining a doubt for the weekend game with Newcastle, Javier Hernandez was given just ten minutes from the bench, with the United boss clearly looking to protect the on-form Mexican ahead of the crucial Old Trafford showdown against Alan Pardew’s side.

Franck Ribery

It’s taken four weeks of waiting and a couple of dalliances with our Champions League Watchlist but finally Franck Ribery produced the goods last night. The French winger grabbed Bayern’s first and last goals in a 3-1 over a dismal Villarreal to ensure his side finished top of Group A last night with a game still to spare. A 12 point haul proved just reward for his patient European Fantasy backers.

Karim Benzema

Real Madrid score goals. It’s just what they do. You can rest Cristiano Ronaldo and give the likes of Mesut Ozil and Sergio Ramos shortened appearances but you can’t stop Jose Mourinho’s men from steamrolling opponents. Four goals in the first twenty minutes saw Madrid tear Dinamo Zagreb apart from the off, with the La Liga leaders eventually settling for a 6-2 victory. Karim Benzema was the top scoring Fantasy performer, grabbing a couple and producing an assist for a 13 point haul, while Jose Callejon also stood out. Priced at 5.4, the midfielder scored twice in his first start of the campaign. Given the hosts previously immaculate defensive record, the biggest surprise was Zagreb scoring twice, though Mourinho did, admittedly, leave a good few first-teamers out for this one, including our Watchlist option Pepe. Having qualified as group winners, Mourinho may use this rest and rotation policy again for the trip to Amsterdam next time round- one to keep an eye on, then.

Alexander & Fabian Frei

FC Basel have continued to defy expectations and provide the perfect variety of budget strikers and midfielders for European Fantasy managers. Fabian and Alexander Frei both scored, as did striker Marco Streller, to fire the Swiss side to a 3-2 victory at Otelul. Having started at prices of 4.0, 6.0 and 5.0 respectively, and with 8 goals and 2 assists between them, they’ve proved a profitable cut-price trio and will be sorely missed from Fantasy squads if Basel fail to get the victory at home to United next time round to move on to the next stage.

Seydou Doumbia

We hoped that CSKA would be able to handle themselves capably in the absence of their suspended main striker- so much so that we nonchalantly threw out the idea of Alan Dzagoev in our Watchlist. The Russian side’s abject performance in their home tie with Lille, however, means they now face an uphill struggle to make the next stage of the Champions League. The visitors dominated the game as young Belgian star Eden Hazard tore the CSKA backline to shreds. A 2-0 away victory courtesy of Moussa Sow and an own goal saw Rudi Garcia’s side return one of only three clean sheets over the course of last night’s action. Lille’s destiny is entirely in their own hands now, with a victory at home to Trabzonspor next time round enough to guarantee passage to the round of 16.

Jan Vertongen

The Ajax centre-back and captain picked up the plaudits for a dominant Man of the Match performance away at Lyon that puts the Dutch side on the brink of qualification for the knockout stages. Neither Yohann Gourcuff or Christian Eriksen did anything to justify their inclusion in our Watchlist, as a defensive battle saw the game finish goalless. Ajax now have a three point and 7 goal advantage over Lyon ahead of their Matchday Six home tie with Real Madrid – qualification isn’t sealed but should be expected, nonetheless.

Didier Zokora

Lille’s win in the early kick-off meant Inter Milan had already qualified by the time their game kicked off. Ricky Alvarez scored for the visitors and Halil (brother of Real Madrid midfielder Hamit) Altintop for Trabzonspor to round out a score draw. We were most interest to see ex-Spurs midfielder pick up 14 recovered balls and fall just shy of 3 bonus points (that’s an assists worth of points) for his efforts about the pitch.

I think I've settled on a 4 pointer this week. Could backfire horrendously, but hell to it. I think.

    Bego, Nani & Rooney OUT
Super Vorm, Larsson & Hernandez IN

Leaving enough beans in the bank to get Baines next week. Bish bash bosh.

Did the Vorm transfer yesterday to be a value whore (don't have much so thought I'd get on it), great transfer for us holding Hennessey, fits way better than Krul 😉

      Nani&Rooney>Hernandez&Larsson

I dunno man, I understand the need to get rid and the value again...but...but...it just looks soooo wrong.

Having said that, I think if I had 2 free transfers, I'd do the same. Go Chico! Good luck.

It does look wrong, I agree. But my reasoning:
        - Bego won't play (most likely), and Vorm rotates nicely with Hennessey.
        - Nani has been pants lately, and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't start this weekend either. Played a lot of games lately. Larsson has lovely fixtures, and I like him. Good player, and a set piece boy.
        - Don't like this hip injury talk about Rooney. Plus I think owning Hernandez will be fun. Frees up cash for...
        - Baines. I WANT BAINES! Almost took Nani out last week to finance getting him (for last week), but chickened out. Not this time.

Accidentally on purpose did Suarez -> Hernandez. The more I think about it, the more I like it. United's striking options seem a bit limited at the moment, so more games for Hernandez. I get to see Suarez through his sticky patch of fixtures, and if he starts to show something, bring him back.

Any idea when we'll find out the results of his FA charge? I've just put Suarez in the garage for now, but if he gets a long ban, he's out in the cold for good.

Even someone who had Moses, got rid and then got him back again, ive had enough!

I no what u mean about Bendy but the only other striker in that price range i like is Graham but im not sure about having him and Sinclair, its just an option!

Im tempted to try get Baines instead somewhere.

      how many hits?

I just got chickpea in and was rewarded kindly. Couldn't invest in rooney until he starts scoring but i think if i had him in my team i'd hang on to him.

i ditched nani weeks ago when he returned 4 points in 3 weeks, he's just not a consistent performer on the pitch or FPL wise for me.

Equally I would't invest in Lampard until chelsea start winning games but yes he is the must have player. I have Mata who I can't ditch cos of fixtures I always think it's his week, but he's really not done anything for me yet.

I didn't get on the Bendy bus as I have an inherent distrust of his ability, I'm hoping he won't prove me wrong. Walcott's looking sharp and aslong as RVP keeps scoring he's getting the assist, not Ramsey. Personally I'd prefer Bale for his price though.

        Some good points.

Its just an option at the moment, i was thinking about Hernandez in for Rooney.

Im looking at players like Lampard & Walcott as they have explosive FPL potential and i feel i need/want to try something different to try and gain ground on my mini league rivals, thus the reason i dont want to go for Bale as a few have him now and u can bet many more will have him for next week.

There are 24 gws to go. Not having in form players like Bale because rivals have them is bad strategy at this time imo. Unless you can find differentials that are as good or better you merely lose ground.

Leave differentials for last few gws if you still need to catch up.

ok posted this earlier n got a couple of interesting replies, just after a few more

    aguero v silva

i was planning on downgrading aguero in a cpl of weeks and getting silva in but having thought about it

    aguero has 9 pts more
hes started every PL game when fit, whereas silva has been rested for a couple
hes been sub for the last 2 CL games
he offers an easy route to rooney should rooney hit form

the only plus i can see for silva is that hes cheaper but its only 0.9m

now i wouldnt recommend getting rid of silva if you bought him cheaper but if it was a choice between the two at their current price which one would u go for?

The thing is they play this Saturday then have CC which they wont play in and the Bayern game is on the Wednesday so I can see both starting against Norwich (otherwise would have gone 10 days without playing)? They may as well concentrate on the league now the CL isn't in their hands?

I disagree. Having Silva lets you sleep easy at night knowing he'll very rarely be rested and he'll score consistently.

That said, rotation may prove to be a moot point unless MC can pull off a last gasp turnaround over Napoli.

I honestly can't remember Aguero's 'fitness' problems, but merely note he's not started 3 PL games to Silva's 2. You may be right, perhaps Aguero was genuinely injured for those 3.

Then again, given MU's form, short-term bet might be to double up Silva/Aguero.

    2 freebies this week

    looking at kompany > richards/jones
    and nani > bale

next would allow me to do Wilko > Jags

    team this week

    Richards/Jones, Wilko, Brown, Barnett (Simpson)

    VDV, Bale, Silva, Larsson (Allen)

    RVP, Aguero (Graham)

not sure what way to swing with Richo or Jones.. Attacking threat and ordinary fixtures vs good fixtures and rotational issues..or i could look at BAE for future funds.. looking fwd to not having to play one of barnett/wilko!! Normally play simpson though..

Kompany to Richards is a tad sideways. For the assists and occasional goal he gets you, there's still a chance he won't start. Could you do Nani -> Bale, and Barnett -> Jagielka?

yeah that works out.. i'm even tempted to leave barnett and offload Wilko. been ordinary since i stupidly jumped on a stoke defender!

God knows. Chelsea need to sort out their back-line but it's not overly clear what the solution is.

I wouldn't have thought that would be any sort of indication. More likely he's on the bench because he's not considered Chelsea's best right back (any more).

Afternoon all, I know this has prob already been asked, but i've had a look round the site and can't see anything- is there any news on who qualified for the the paddy power cup, still vaguely hopeful despite DVD's performance (damn you Bale) on Monday

Nothing yet. Don't worry - it'll be headline news when it arrives so you won't miss anything. Don't have the figures on how many entered, which is obviously a key factor - but I'd be surprised if your 59 doesn't make it.

Yup, it looks good to me, the two you're bringing in have better form, and their prices are heading in the opposite direction to the ones going out.
And if form changes you can always upgrade to bring Rooney back at some point, but I'd say Hernandez is all you need atm..
