A good haul of Fantasy points might put a smile on your face but doesn’t always put pounds in your pocket. That certainly rang true last weekend when it came to the โ€œFlutterโ€. Bossing the left-flanks, both Leighton Baines and Garath Bale were Scout Picks that paid dividends for Fantasy managers, but failed to deliver on our chosen Flutter markets.

A brand new set of fixtures will hopefully spark a return to betting form. Spicing up the wagers this week are spot-kick specialist Yakubu, in-form poacher Emmanual Adebayor, free-kick aficionado Ryan Taylor and human battering ram Micah Richards. Read on to find out how we spend our ยฃ10 stake in this weekโ€™s Fantasy Flutter.

Tottenham are swaggering right now, thereโ€™s even a whisper of ‘title contenders’ in the air. And why not? Loanee Emmanual Adebayor has taken over the goalscoring baton while Rafael Van der Vaart nursed his hamstring, netting 4 goals in two games, leaving Spurs just a couple of neat and tidy performances away from challenging the topspot. Although Bolton will try their best to repel the vibrant Spurs attack, Adebayor to score 2 or more goals at 13/5, looks good for the first ยฃ2.50 of our money.

Last weekโ€™s flutter selection neglected the prospect of defensive returns, so this time around a clean sheet market is tempting us. Roberto Mancini will be looking to come away from the Norwich clash with a shutout, and if Micah Richards and co can keep out the likes of Anthony Pilkington and Steve Morison out, and steer clear of the ref’s notebook, Paddy will pay out at 11/10. This might seem a touch too short for some, but a ยฃ5 stake shows confidence City this weekend.

Newcastleโ€™s Ryan Taylor has netted a couple of long-range efforts this season, and will be looking to lend his right-foot to the Magpies attack when Chelsea pay a visit. Taylor to score outside of the box has been priced at 8/1 by Paddy, and is a risk worth taking for a ยฃ1 of our money.

Blackburn haven’t featured much in the Flutter, as their worst start to a Premier League season plods on. While picking up points has been a problem, goals haven’t been proving too much of an issue of late, however, and Yakubu looks a potential bargain over a forthcoming run of favourable fixtures. Netting twice against Wigan, he is fancied to make a mark against Swansea at Ewood this weekend, with Paddy posting 5/2 for him to score and Blackburn to go on to win. Weโ€™ll take them up on that for another quid.

Our final wager is a cheeky 50 pence on a long-shot anytime double. Watchlist Wanderer Jamie O’Hara and Blackburnโ€™s Morten Gamst Pederson were both in our thinking when it came to the Scout Picks this weekend; Paddy are offering both to net at 18/1. That may be too far fetched for most to open their wallets for, but weโ€™re going to back our hunch with the last of our stake money.

Curse of the Old Boy!

Paddy’s money back special this weekend takes us to Villa Park and surrounds the fortunes of former home favourite, Ashley Young. If the United man comes back to haunt his former club by scoring a goal at anytime, Paddy will refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast singles on the match.

Same problem, definitely not doubling on Swansea so it's N Taylor in defence and another keeper (Schwarzer) in goal.

But should I just play R Taylor instead of N Taylor? Both are going to concede aren't they and R Taylor is the only one going forward.

Hey guys my rival is 40 points in front of me which is much better than before being 100+behind him due to my traditional slow start to the season.

I'm not sure who to captain this week,he just got RVP in and has ade aswel upfront. I have RVP, Ade and Aguero. Should I play it safe and captain RVP like him until arsenal play a decent team or take the leap and captain Aguero for differential? Cheers in advance

I'm captaining RVP over Adebayor but don't have Aguero. Clearly MCI should massacre NOR but Aguero will have competition in Balotelli who plays furthest forward. RVP won't against a poor Wigan side. RVP(C) a must.

The news of VDV been fit changes the story, Ade usually takes wide positions and drops deeper when VDV is playing, even though I think he will score, RVP will outscore him against a woeful Wigan side so play it safe and captain RVP.

I've learnt this lesson the hard way, Southside. Just get him now mate.

Ignore the hit because you'll only want him in the following weeks anyway and will still prob end up taking a hit for him and having to take out players you weren't intending to lose n order to get him.

If you want him next week it will still cost you a point hit won't it.

So what's the difference between doing it now or doing it next week?

In your case though, I'd leave Ramsey and Sturridge in this week.

Ramsey has a decent matchup and could get you an assist or a goal if Arsenal go medieval on Wigan.

Ba to Sturridge is pretty much a wash this GW as they both will probably score similar points today.

Consider Bosingwa to Kompany (instead of Richards) as it saves you £0.2m and leaves you wiggle room to get Ba next week even if his price rises.

Then go Dzeko to Adebayor with the other transfer. You don't need to do all 4 of your mooted transfers in one GW.

Popular differentials performance assessment - up to this point in the season.

    Baines 6/10, rising fast
    Brunt 4/10
    Hernandez 6/10, rising fast
    Walcott 5/10, rising
    Formica 4/10
    Sessegnon 3/10
    Larsson 8/10, rising
    Bendtner 5/10, falling
    Mata 6/10, rising
Ba 8/10, falling slightly but fixtures ripe to rise
    Hoolahan 3/10
    Sturridge 6/10
Moses 2/10, rising, but that's not too hard.
    Balotelli 4/10
Taarabt 0/10, can it fall any lower?

Same, he may not be a differential too long if he keeps the goals steady. Never had such a cheap way into a top four attack. I think to get mass ownership he needs a hattrick, unfortunately his deployment out wide limits that and Chelsea have misfired a bit. Otherwise he'd be above 6/10.

Baines, Formica, Moses a bit generous IMO.

Baines was good at the very start of the season and then completely anonymous until recently; Formica was benched, started and everything in between; and Moses... well, the Holy One was the definition of a 2 point average until last week.

If anything, Moses should be a -1/10, because having him as a differential was actually an advantage to your opponents!

Yeah as with any ratings system the actual meaning of the numbers is important. I roughly assigned them based on how well they did relative to the best (10) and worst (0) FPL players that played at least once. So 2 points isn't a zero as at least they're not left out as many differentials are (see Drenthe). Baines defence total is on the first page of defenders fairly high up so feel he warrants better than a 5. Formica hasn't lit the world on fire I suppose, maybe a 3.

I am probably going to get Baines for Wilkinson before the deadline, it was a toss-up between him and Vermaelen/Jagielka/Jones. I am keeping Drenthe as he has great fixtures + DGW coming up, if he doesn't play this GW I have Sinclair to come on as 1st choice sub (which I don't think is too bad.

My other option was to play Brown in defence and swap out Drenthe for Bale. Do you agree with me? Is Baines the way to go? My team is linked.

I took Drenthe out this week for O'Hara.

The Everton DGW is still 6 gameweeks away. I reasoned that this was plenty of time for him to get healed up from his injury and show enough form to suggest that I should get him back in time for the double.

Time to kick out deadwood, Japben. The cold weather has started to kick in here in Blighty now and postponements etc will be on the way now. Can't be carrying injured players now.

Not sure on Baines either. Everton very inconsistent and its a lot of money (imo) to pay for someone who, most weeks anyway, you are going to have to hope he gets a penalty or an assist in order to score more than 2 pts.

Vermaelen is a better goal threat from open play, will keep more cleanies than Everton and is cheaper.

I just think once the dgw is over most people will want to get rid of Baines and, like I said, the dgw is still 6 gw's away so I don't see the pressing need to blow a massive load of your budget on getting him in now.

    1) Schwarzer (LIV) or 2) Vorm (bla)

Ramsey - Bolton are gonna get smoked.

Cheers my lineup already agreed with all but the Raylor choice. Raylor does score spectacularly occasionally, but I wonder how rare that's gonna be and whether that can offset what I see as a no-hope CS v Chelsea. Swansea have got a 0-0 at Anfield in some style, have to wonder if they'll shut out Blackburn too and cost Kean his job.

Eh, I don't know about Swansea away (and this is coming from someone who doubles up on Vorm/Naylor half the time), they're an OK bet but not as great as at home.

Blackburn are kind of like Chelsea-lite, in that they're terrible defensively but manage to score themselves most weeks. Don't fancy Naylor or Raylor to keep it clean this week.

Hmmm yes I am aware Swansea have much better CS chances at home. Just seems that if they can manage a CS at Anfield - and not a ridiculously lucky one - it might show they are bedding in and starting to improve their away defending.

Still, in light of Blackburn's attacking players... guess I'll go Raylor this week

I'm sure he means Bolton will be destroyed, so don't play a midfielder of theirs (Eagles) because they'll score bugger all, and that makes Ramsey better relative to Eagles.

He could well, that's why I brought him in! The tot defence is rather leaky against any half decent attack and Bolton actually have one. I just don't know if Eagles will have time to do anything while his own defence is getting steamrollered.

With defenders it's 6pts for the goal. Scoring as a defender is almost certain guarantee of BPs too. So the goal will bag you min 7 points, a CS 4. Penalty duties make the goal so much likelier. Also I say Baines as a fullback has much better assist chances than a CB. Based on this gotta be Baines.

And that's even before my belief that Everton will get a CS.

See my reply to you further up, Japben.

DGW is 6 GW's away, man.

Everton are inconsistent and don't really do cleanies. They got one last week cos Bolton played most of the game with 10 men. I think Vermaelen offers you more cleanie chances and goals from open play.

Richards costs £1.3m less and yet is outscoring Baines without being on free kicks or pens. Raylor is £2.5m less and yet is outscoring Baines without being on pens.

Drenthe will come back soon and be on some set pieces minimizing Baines opportunities for assists.

Baines is grossly overpriced in my opinion.

At least Vermaelen and Raylor play for good football teams.

I hear your points and I was and remain a Baines skeptic, but all those points naturally include the Everton's very bad spell when they had awful fixtures and the defence was uncharacteristically bad. Newcastle had good fixtures, so did City - and defenders did good. Defending is a very fixture dependent beast. Now have excellent fixtures with the single blip of Arsenal (I think they could neutralize RVP anyhow) and have demonstrated successive wins in the last two favourable fixtures. As long as the fixtures are good they can be this good team.

When Everton get run of bad fixtures or Baines is taken off pens that swings it away from him, I'd dump. But ride the wave while you can. This will be perhaps the best run of Everton's season.

(Btw by 'neutralize RVP' I mean mark him tightly enough to avoid him scoring, Fulham actually managed it last weekend. He's class but if you put enough men on him you can stifle, and because Arsenal have only one proven scorer they did struggle and could against Everton)

                Fulham didn't neutralize anything.

RVP had plenty of chances in that game it was just one of those games where nothing went right for him.

Fulham just got lucky that they met him on a night when the law of averages that suggested he wasn't going to score was on their side.

Ask Everton fans who watch all their games how confident they are of their defence 'neutralising' RVP.

              They're hugely inconsistent though, Isacki.

Reality is that's who they are and I don't think the fixture list is going to change that. Would it really surprise anyone if Stoke turned Everton over this weekend? Ask most Everton fans and they'd tell you no!

For all the "Baines is good for assists" talk, the guy has got 1 assist all season. That includes favourable fixtures against QPR (pre Fernandes era version), Blackburn and Wigan where he did nothing each time.

His 2 goals have been penalties.

How many penalties do you think Everton will get? They may not get another all season. Drenthe is on corners and some free kicks so there's the 'assist' myth debunked further right there.

Sorry, but Verm imo is a much better option. I'd rather have Raylor over Baines this season too. And this is from someone who had Baines earlier on this season.

I think the point is that Baines was a must-have last season with much the same Everton team. Clearly they've not performed the same this season with unfavourable fixtures (even having the odd QPR/Blackburn/Wigan isn't too great if sandwiched between tough gamesl and general underachievement but these things can be rectified by a good run. The personnel remain mostly the same. His penalty duties remain the same.

I'd back Baines in the same way I'd back Nani if United start scoring mad again and he's in the team. Or the way some back Vidic with United playing tight again. Based on pedigree in the past and nothing having dramatically changed. Sure, you can point to bad stats thus far and I perfectly agree you shouldn't keep a player for a bad spell, but this is now and it could be a spell one really regrets missing.

I guess Everton will answer the inconsistency question tomorrow =)

I have Vermaelen but agree Baines is obviously the bigger threat; an attacking full-back, on most free-kicks and penalties. The main reason why I would never spend so much on Baines is because, even when fixtures look promising, Everton's likelihood of keeping a clean sheet is still too low.

Everton have been poor this season, too, and Baines hasn't shone as yet.

Isacki sums it up well, actually.

Thanks, both Everton and Arsenal have been shaky in defence, both only keeping 1 clean sheet since the beginning of October. Everton always have a shaky start and \i think have much more chance of clean sheets now with their fixtures and habit of finding form as the season progresses, also Arsenal are getting back to a full strength defence. I think I would be getting in Vermaelen if I didn't have the funds gor Baines but as I do I will get in Baines. I hope that Sturridge continues to play well as if I get Baines I won't be able to upgrade him to Ba without downgrading a player first
