The hangover from Wednesday’s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but United’s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the champions’ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergie’s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Young’s owners more than a little nervous of United’s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following today’s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

It's painful having all those points of his on the bench, but at least there'll be plenty of casual players who will no doubt transfer him in this week, even with the fixtures coming up. So his value should go back up a bit.

Is that it? Rooney, RVP, Suarez, Ba, Nani all getting points - Sinclair as well. Liverpool (Enrique) and Swansea (Vorm, Taylor) CSs as well.

Probably the fact that Raylor/Simpson got 0 or something. Maybe because Spurs, City and Chelsea all still to play...

It should rise once or twice this week. His scoring has been pretty good even without form, he was third highest midfielder before today.

Todays score will make people take notice, especially if they check fixtures.

Yeap purposely sold a players this gameweek, so I could afford him next week, just already took a four point hit, moving Bendtner out. Hate taking hits as it is and didn't want to take a 8point hit, but in hindsight i should have moved Ramsey out.

Think I'll go against the first rule of Fantasy Football and make an early transfer to avoid price going up.

I rate Hernandez and think he will be a big player for united but they seem to be alot more dangerous without him, so far this season:

With Chico they average 1.64 goals per game (including 8/11 games where they only managed 1 goal)
Without Chico its a average of 3.75 goals per game

As a Rooney owner and potentially Nani I would like Chico to be out the team for a while

Hernandez missed 2 games this season: 1st game - WBA (2-1) and today - Wolves (4-1).

Otherwise, a couple of 10mins cameos here and there, Welbeck was also injured for a bit.

Also take into account the opposition.

It was 99% certainly his goal and will get the 5 points for it because it was going in anyway without the deflection, plus FPL dont count deflections from inside the box by opposing players. And he should get the 3 bonus points, if not, then surely 2.

I know it's early but is anyone else considering RVP -> Rooney after this weekend? I probably won't, before any haters start commenting, i just want peoples opinions.

      That would be crackers.

He still managed to score vs an Everton team who seemed intent on just trying to stop him.

Having bought RVP at 12.1, I'm sort of priced out of doing it, as I'll never be able to get him back.

No. Rooney is definitely worth getting in though but not like that.

Ta. Forgotten the subs rules. The Milkman never came on - or delivered. First sub is a defender. Who comes on: first sub or first midfielder? 😕

Millwall fans apparently singing "suicide, suicide, suicide" and "where's your Gary Speed" to the Cardiff fans today.

    Absolute vermin.

Is it worth doing the following:-

    Bendtner to Yak
    VDV to Nani
    Kompany to Baines

    8pt hit??

    Current team:-

    Vorm, Ruddy
    Verm, Enrique, Kompany, McAuley, Brown
    VDV, Bale, Silva, Drenthe, Eagles
    RVP, Ade, Bendtner

      Bendtner to Yak - yes
VDV to Nani - 50/50 but I'd be inclined to say yes
Kompany to Baines - toughie I'd be inclined to say no. Kompany is reasonably priced. Whereas I think Baines is over priced. But he has a great run of games and could score goals and gave assist.

    Vorm (ruddy)
    Jones Baines Enrique (wilkinson delaet)
    Silva VDV Ramsey Drenthe (dyer)
    RVP Adebayor Ba

    A) VDV -> Bale & Adebayor -> Rooney
    B) Ade -> Welbear/yak & Drenthe -> Nani
    C) Ramsey -> Gower & Drenthe -> Nani

    please help!

C in my opinion. definitely wouldn't do A considering VDV and Ade have a DGW coming up. If you've stuck with VDV for this long, you should at least give him the home game against Wolves...

Happy with my 2 free transfers this week so far..

    Ramsey > Nani
    Aguero > Ba

Just hope that Aguero doesn't ruin it for me tomorrow!

Does it make sense selling Drenthe with his DGW coming up?

He hasn't even been on the bench for the last 3 games so he's either injured or has fallen out with Moyes. I'm starting to doubt if he's even alive....

It makes sense as he's not playing.

He's cheap enough to get back easily if needed.

DGW - they have Bolton & Spurs.

Honestly, I'll have Howard and Drenthe/Rodwell but would rather have no Everton for Spurs game.

Again, 0 shots on target for second consecutive week.

Vellios is their top goalscorer with 3.

Is it still worth getting Jones in, considering Vidic's injury...?

If you can spare the money yeah. Might be capable of giving a few assists if he continues to play OOP.
