The hangover from Wednesdayโ€™s Champions League exit will no doubt remain in the system for quite some time but Unitedโ€™s response this afternoon was swift and emphatic.

Bereft of their skipper for the rest of the season and with goals proving hard to come by, plenty had questioned the championsโ€™ credentials after the embarrassment of Basel but, unfortunately for Mick McCarthy, Fergieโ€™s team had all the answers.

Perhaps buoyed by the easing of his Euro 2012 suspension, Wayne Rooney returned to his form of early season, slamming two past Wolves in a stroll at Old Trafford. Nani reprised his role of last season, moving over to the left, with Ashley Young afforded nothing more than a brief cameo late on in the second half. The Portuguese winger served a timely reminder of his Fantasy worth, grabbing a brace and assist and sits on 15 points. Pre-bonus, this is already his best haul of the campaign.

Antonio Valencia patrolled the right flank and provided 3 assists. Incredibly, his 11 point return is more than his total for the previous fourteen gameweeks and will surely give Fergie food for thought, with Youngโ€™s owners more than a little nervous of Unitedโ€™s increased potency in his absence.

Having recorded four clean sheets in their previous five, United had relied on Nemanja Vidic to shore up their leaky defensive but with the Serbian no longer an option this season, attack seems to be the way forward once again. A dependence on clean sheets has definitely diminished and a return to the displays of the opening few gameweeks will surely see investment in Rooney and Nani pick up pace over the next few days and beyond.

The next six gameweeks only add to the appeal- (qpr, ful, WIG, BLA, new, BOL) and will have many pondering the unthinkable and taking the armband off Robin Van Persie, particularly with Arsenal rolling up to the Etihad next week.

Post-match, Chris Smalling admitted the players were keen to answer their critics after the midweek humiliation in Switzerland:

It was a big game for all of us. The manager has shown faith all season and it was up to us to show the fans we should be a part of his starting XI.

Following todayโ€™s result, some of them may just have earned a place in plenty Fantasy XIs over the next few weeks, too.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just realised Im 0.1 from getting phil jones. Damn

Should have put howard in as hes 0.1 cheaper. Damn. Then I'd afford jones.

Can I now buy howard and take out friedel without taking another hit, as its just changing the same slot moments earlier????

ESPN 3 online is retarded, half the time when it says the game is available to replay it f*cking isn't. So I didn't get to catch the manu game today, how did jonesy play?

also I have been contemplating bringing in Evans for de laet but seeing as manu conceded I can only guess evans had something to do with it... anyone want to fill me in on how wolves scored?

Jarvis destroyed Smalling. Had his way with Smalling. Sent Smalling to therapy. Then he crossed with his left foot. Even though everybody knew he wanted to cross with his left foot but smalling played him towards the byline and let him cross. Then Fletcher rose above Evra and hit a nice header. 95% Smalling IMO

so how would you say evans played? smalling was pretty poor against basel as well from what I gather. All the scoring also makes me wonder if united just got lazy, how did they look defensively as a team?

        Nani, rooney, or valencia now...

Evans was actually quite solid I thought. I think that United will be pretty good defensively but Smalling looks like a centre back forced out wide. Obviously not as good as they were with the wall of Vidic and I fear for Smalling once the Brazilian twins are healthy...

OK How's this looking going into next week, I just used my wildcard so I can change if need be!:

    Howard (vorm)

    Simpson, Enrique, Jones, Smalling

    Nani, VDV, Silva

    Ba, RVP, Adebayor

    Subs: Caulker, Surman, Ferguson

    I have a measly 0.2 left over.

    Thoughts please?

In a bit of a jam here.

If i take out VDV for Nani, and Sturridge for Ba i will have 0.1 in the bank.
If i wait until Tottenham's match then Ba would have risen in price as well as Nani, and i'll be 0.1 short.
Should i do the trades now or wait until after Tottenham play?

Any Chelsea fans here that could give some insight into Romeu's chances of a regular start?

Thinking about Drenthe to Romeu/Gower and Ramsey to Nani but would prefer some Chelsea mid if it looks like he's in the vicinity of a hammer and a few nails. ๐Ÿ™‚

Romeu has done nothing to show that he should not be playing, that being said he will likely be rotated, especially over the christmas fixtures. Also hard to count on attacking returns for him. But for benchfodder you could do worse.

Romeu is a terrific player and will probably cement that place as his own in the near future- but when Essien is back he will threaten for the spot. Also, Romeu is not a goal-getter and with the new bonus system will not draw you many points. If you need a cheap midfield option that you will likely have on your bench most of the time, why not Moses? I've had Moses all year, even when people are getting rid. He plays up top in a 4-3-3 and can pop up for a goal or assist every once in a while. You can't do much better for under 5.0...
