A late, late stunner from Seb Larsson gives Martin O’Neill plenty to smile about at the Stadium of Light. Rafael Van der Vaart returns to the Tottenham first-team but endures a frustrating afternoon as Matthew Etherington steals the limelight to end his old club’s unbeaten run:

Phil Bardsley
The left-back enjoyed a productive first game under Martin O’Neill’s stewardship, earning both assists in the 2-1 win. Bardsley’s presence in the Blackburn half was noticeable as he foraged forward time and time again, firing in crosses and efforts on goal. Clearly, in terms of offering attacking intent, he looks to be the key Fantasy target in the Sunderland defence. At 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), you’ll pay that little bit more, but, with clean sheets so unreliable as a source of points, Bardsley’s attacking potential could well be worth paying for.

Seb Larsson
The Swede’s ability from a dead-ball was again on show as he stepped up to curl home a dramatic late winner. Having missed from the spot at Wolves last weekend, Larsson redeemed himself with a wonderfully flighted effort that gave him his fifth goal of the season. With four assists and 11 FPL bonus also in his locker, Larsson has now clearly emerged as the top midfield prospect within the Sunderland camp. Set-piece delivery is set to be crucial to the Black Cats under O’Neill, which seems likely to see Larsson develop as an even more significant factor in their ascent up the table.

Chris Samba
Samba was immense at the back for much of yesterday’s game, repelling attack after attack as the home side poured forward in a relentless siege on the Blackburn goal. Subject of a Watchlist article last Friday, Samba vindicated our focus on his attacking returns with an assist for Simon Vukcevic’s opener. He has now scored or assisted in each of last five ninety minute appearances and with home clashes against West Brom and Bolton up next, could once again prosper, despite his side’s inability to keep a clean sheet.

Rafael Van der Vaart
The Dutchman earned a recall to the Tottenham starting lineup as expected, with Jermain Defoe dropped to the bench. Van der Vaart suffered a quiet, unassuming match, however, failing to have the kind of impact to mirror that of Luka Modric, who drove Spurs forward in the second-half. More significantly, Emmanuel Adebayor was given the responsibility from the spot when Spurs did make the breakthrough – indication that perhaps the Togo striker has jumped above Van der Vaart in the penalty taking pecking order.

With Nani returning two goals and an assist in United’s 4-1 win over Wolves, Van der Vaart owners will be pondering the merits of a trade. However, it’s worth noting that Spurs now have two consecutive home matches, while Nani has two away trips in the same period. With a double fixture to come in gameweek 20, it’s also worth planning ahead – it’s likely that Van der Vaart will enjoy huge levels of investment for his double gameweek.

Thomas Sorensen
The Dane seems to have established himself ahead of Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal- yesterday was his fourth start in a row. Sorensen’s 7 saves helped condemn Spurs to a first defeat since the end of August but with four of the next six away, many Fantasy managers may well look elsewhere. Two back-to back Britannia clashes against Villa and Wigan in gameweek 18-19 could be tempting, given his 4.3 price.

Ryan Shotton
Priced as a 4.0 defender, Shotton again patrolled the right flank of the Potters’ midfield and, with so many experienced defenders at his disposal, Tony Pulis definitely seems to prefer him further forward. Shotton’s eye for goal has seen him score 3 times in all competitions this term and he also possesses a throw-in similar to that of Rory Delap- always a good attribute in Pulis’ side. If he can establish himself as a first-team regular, Shotton could prove a dirt-cheap out of position alternative to help free up budgets elsewhere.

Matthew Etherington
The winger chose a showdown with his former club as the time to open his account for the season. Etherington has been mainly in the shadow of Jon Walters when it came to eyeing up Stoke midfield Fantasy prospects, with just 3 assists to his name prior to yesterday’s clash, but a 15 point haul propelled him back into consideration. At 6.4 and with just 2.7% ownership, he’s been off many a radar but Etherington has a proven Fantasy track record and typically tends to prove good value- with 59 points, he’s edged ahead of the likes of Samir Nasri in the midfield pecking order on the back of yesterday’s match-winning performance.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hey,
    Please RMT

    Vorm (Moreira)
    R. Taylor - J. Enrique - Simpson (Wilkinson/Tierney)
Bale - Ramsey - Walcott - Silva (Ferguson)
    RVP - Yakubu - Adebayor

I see my three main problems as:
    1. My defence isn't making enough points, and the magpies are bleeding goals atm.
    2. Ramsey is driving me mad, has to go.
    3. Yakubu.
I have 6.8 in the bank

    Cheers!

I know Yakubu isn't the type of striker who will run his guts off for the team, but seeing Blackburn score one goal and then go ultra-defensive with Yakubu left completely ineffective and isolated is maybe cause for concern. I'll probs keep him for the next 2 then ship out before they face Liv.

I'd be tempted to even take a hit and get rid of Ramsey too. As rasingdrive says above, The Yak is not a problem at all. The guy costs £5 million odd, you gotta expect the odd 2 pointer, especially away from home.

But if I keep Ferguson, and only shift Ramsey out of the Midfield for someone like Nani, I can then do Simpson>Kompany, R.Taylor>Walker - increasing my chance of CSs and points in general.

I'd change Ramsey for Nani or Mata, and Simpson for Evans. Long term I'd get rid of both R. Taylor and Simpson - no belief in the new back line of Newcastle -- with a cheap options like De Laet or N Taylor and a quality expensive one like Vermaelen - the guy has a wooping 49 points of 6 games, which is madness even for a striker, at only 6.9. Perhaps even change Enrique in the January window if he doesn't fix his two-pointers, with two better cheap options than De Laet and Taylor.

With 6 mil in the bank, I'd also change Walcott for Nani, Ramsey for Mata and rotate between Yakubu / Ba / Morrison up front, with VP steadfast.

You're reluctant because there's a lot of other Man City attacking players who could score big.

The thing is with Toure, is he's pretty much as nailed on over Christmas as Man City gets. He chips in with assists and goals on a regular basis and if it goes wrong, you've got a WC in january to take him out with he goes to the African Nations.

That said, there's some decent options out there.

the woldcard is after gwk 20. So my wildcard will be spent ditching the spurs and everton players I've accumulated. Actually I'll probably stick to BAE-ADe- Bale and Baines.

Spurs have City, Liverpool, Utd and Arsenal in their next 6 games after the DGW.

Also Newcastle and Wigan at home, so I would have 1 or 2 and not the full 3 Spurs.

Everton can't keep CSs and can't score. Will be a late decision. Hopefully they add to their squad.

H Dog, given the transfer window, it makes sense to try to keep it late for new FPL arrivals/departures, but it may well depend on how your team is doing, and how itchy your trigger finger becomes. 🙂

Literally where is this idea of transferring RVP out come from? One goal not good enough? Or is it the one dodgy fixture? Or the one BP?

You could get it right and this is the week he'll stop scoring but on what basis could you think that? He takes all set-pieces, is involved in nearly every attack as either the scorer or assister and is the top scoring player on the game by 27 points.

    Bizarre thoughts on here sometimes.

    RMT folks:

    Vorm (Krul)
    Jagielka / ShawX / Jones (Simpson / N.Taylor)
    VDV / Mata / Silva / Walters / (Gower)
    RVP / Ba / Sturidge

    O ft, 3.2 in bank

    Only problems:
    - VDV
    - no MUN cover (except Jones)
    - no Bale

hmmmmm, I really hesitate to get rid of Mata...... got me last week only.

VDV-Bale should have been done 5 weeks ago. I have been waiting and waiting and waiting.... isn't now to late? VDV lost its value, Bale is overpriced and since I waited so far, maybe wait one GW? I would like them both for DGW.
        Or?

Not too late at all. Would be surprised if VDV starts this weekend after yesterday's performance. Admittedly, Defoe was irrelevant too but I cannot see 'arry dropping him for Sund (h). Maybe Lennon will make way for VDV?

            VDV-Bale for a hit? hmmmmmm.

I wanted to teach myself to be patient and to transfer VDV out after first bad game.

In this case I am sorry for not being impatient.

You think that VDV will not start next weekend? Hard words.....

He is just too expensive to keep gambling on. Even if he does start you are just waiting on his the glowing number 11 to be raised by the 4th official. Its been a nervy and unenjoyable bandwagon journey this one.

          I will.

I just feel it is risky not to have MUN cover. Will see... one easy home game doesnot show their real form at all.

No. Mata is a good player to have right now imo. You might consider upgrading one of your defenders and revisiting the Man U. idea after next weekend

That is what I planned. Wait for next GW and see what will VDV and Manchester do..... if VDV fainls and Nani/Rooney scores big, then will act.

Mata/Silva/Walters are nailed for me till next WC.

              Thanks.

Just checked rivals team and my league positions. Green arrows all around. Then I realise that one has Crofts coming on and other has Etherington coming. Sodding casual players. Playing form and fixtures are not working for me anymore.

    would you rather have
Baines + Walters/Larsson long term or
rotate one of Evans/Caulker/Gabbidon(Home, rest etc) + Nani

rather B, but only beacuse I think that Baines is not worth the money and with rotating cheapies you can get more points. And also, Nani is worth more than Baines

Not sure you want to rid of Spurs coverage for this week. I think you need to take a view of VDV. I got rid two weeks ago. The persistent injury problems put me off him.
