With Chelsea’s win over Man City signing off the gameweek, we tip our hats to Swansea’s “Penalty Killer“. United’s return to attacking form merits our attention, while Emmanuel Adebayor’s spot-kick duties give us more food for thought on the Tottenham front.

The Player

Michel Vorm is arguably the season’s Fantasy success story so far. Swansea’s £1.5 million signing from Utrecht represents incredible value, both in Premier League terms and in our own Fantasy realm. With an initial starting value of 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Vorm’s displays and Swansea’s possession game have helped the Dutchman rise to 4.9, with over 30% of FPL squads including him in their ranks.

In many ways that figure is surprising. Vorm is far and away the best option for a keeper spot in our squads – even at 4.9, his form and Swansea’s ability to keep clean sheets at the Liberty Stadium show no sign of waning. Saturday’s display in the 2-0 win over Fulham saw the latest round of heroics. Vorm recorded six saves – his ninth return of FPL save points this term. He also stopped his second penalty of the season – diving to keep out Clint Dempsey’s spot-kick to keep Swansea’s clean sheet intact and earn Vorm further returns in the process. Somehow FPL bonus failed to follow; revealing a flaw in the EA PPI calculation, rather than in Vorm’s display.

Swansea’s form on their travels, however, has been the one drawback in their season so far and it’s a factor that is heavily reflected in Vorm’s points distribution. The home comforts of the Liberty Stadium have seen him return 56 points from 8 games, whereas on the road, he’s picked up just 20 points in seven fixtures; a home average of 7 drops to 3 away. Vorm’s abilities looks set to be put to the test over the next few home fixtures, though, with Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea heading to Wales in three of his next four home encounters.

With the festive wildcard available after the gameweek 20 deadline, the next five gameweeks sees a number of keepers dovetail perfectly with Vorm for home/away fixtures. Tim Krul, Wayne Hennessey and Paul Robinson all stand out in the sub 5.0 bracket, with Tim Howard and Brad Friedel –given both have a double gameweek 20- also proving worthy options before we’re given the opportunity to shake things up again.

The Team

There’s no doubt the loss of Nemanja Vidic will prove significant to United’s resilience at the back. Stung by the 6-1 home defeat handed out by City, Vidic’s return from a calf injury coincided with a run of 4 clean sheets in five but Fergie’s side were producing minimal attacking returns, with a single goal in each of their last seven home matches prior to Saturday’s showdown with Wolves.

Suddenly, the shackles are off again. With Vidic sidelined for the rest of the season, Fergie may feel United’s best form of defence is to go on the attack. Stung by their Champions League exit at Basel the previous Wednesday, United provided an Old Trafford response that gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over ahead of the festive schedule.

Wayne Rooney’s brace sees him enter our thoughts once again after an eight-game goalless streak. Nani’s double, supplemented by an assist, came courtesy of a move over to the left flank- a role that saw him end last season as top-scoring FPL player. With Antonio Valencia returning to the right wing and providing 3 assists, Ashley Young’s owners may be shifting a little nervously. Valencia, at 7.8, is 2.0 cheaper than Young and with an ownership of just 0.4%, could prove a handy differential if he establishes himself as a first-team fixture once more.

The champions’ timely return to form, ahead of a very favourable schedule, may well persuade many to invest in their attacking assets over the next few gameweeks; with Wigan and Blackburn rolling up to Old Trafford in gameweeks 18 and 19 respectively, suddenly Robin Van Persie may have competition for the armband all over again.

The Talking Point

As Tottenham laid siege to the Stoke City goal in Sunday afternoon’s showdown at the Britannia, a trip by Glenn Whelan on Luka Modric inside the box offered the visitors a chance to halve the 2-0 deficit. What happened next, though, was entirely unexpected. As owners of Rafael Van der Vaart sat back in anticipation of a converted spot-kick, Emmanuel Adebayor stepped up instead to coolly find the net.

Adebayor had taken the club’s last penalty at West Brom, prodding home the rebound after Ben Foster had saved his initial effort, but Van der Vaart had missed that game, with his troublesome hamstring playing up once again. Having previously been the number one for penalty duties, it was assumed he’d resume the mantle but it seems as though Adebayor has jumped ahead of him in the pecking order- a significant blow to the Dutchman’s Fantasy owners.

Van der Vaart has now failed to score, assist or return bonus since gameweek ten. The last five gameweeks have seen him pick up 8 points, with Gareth Bale bagging 44 and Adebayor 41 in comparison. Given that he’s the priciest of the three and with the likes of Nani and Juan Mata looking at some favourable upcoming fixtures, the sales are starting to snowball. Factor in his pesky hamstring and the form of Jermain Defoe and his owners are in something of a quandary.

Tottenham’s fixtures are undoubtedly in his favour, though; four home fixtures in the next five gameweeks, including a double gameweek 20, are supplemented by away trips to Norwich and Swansea- all offer plenty potential. Defoe’s own hamstring issues offered Van der Vaart a way back into the first-team at Stoke and, providing the Dutchman can steer clear of injury, writing off such a proven Fantasy performer ahead of a strong upcoming schedule may be a potentially perilous decision.

well with Fletcher out indefinitely and Clevs and Ando out until New Year and Feb respectively, Valencia, Carrick, Giggs and Park should all see more game time and should be affordable. You could always go Kompany - BAE instead of Enrique, gives you 1 or 1.1 instead of .5

Dyer to Moses is a sideways move and not worth wasting one of 2 frees on, I'd only do that if I had 2 frees and wanted 2 the following week (i.e I had one spare) or on a wc. Kompany - Enrique is a good move IMO, I'd keep the other one tbh unless a major injury comes up.

Here's a question for ya... I bought the mrs a nice pendant + earrings set last chrimbo. Is it too early to buy another set for this chrimbo?? Will she think "hmmmmm, he bought me a similar set last year which I still wear often". Anyone had experience in this department?

Depends how often she wears it. Will she rotate the two like cheap Swansea midfielders, or is the one you bought last year a permanent fixture like RVP?

Yeah that's the problem, last years' set was a bit of an RVP! Expensive but worth it, she only wears on special occassions. The set I'm looking at this year is a fair bit cheaper, but thinking it could be here everday type set.

If you know she'll wear this new one on a day to day basis then use the other one for special do's then it makes sense to me.

But then i'm a bloke, what makes sense to me is usually wrong.

Saying that though I usually buy the missus earrings every year and she doesn't seem to complain, at least not to my face.

Brunt every day of the week, it's what I'm doing. Walters is worth keeping, he's on pens for one thing, always worth keeping a player if they're on pens, hence why so many people (myself included) are in a VdV related dilemma.

Williamson played the first 45 mins for Newcastle's reserve match against Bolton as planned.
Apparently though he looked really rusty so will be unlikely to make the match against Swansea. Again its probably going to be Simpson CB unless Colo is back, then it will be Raylor Coloccini Perch Simpson
    .
However it should be noted that Simpson today rejected a new contract, so there is always the chance he might be dropped for Santon.

    Hennessey - Vorm
Brown - Jose Enrique - Hutton - Richards - Jones
    Silva - Ferguson - Young - Larsson - Drenthe
Sturridge - Suarez - Van Persie

    I'm thinking ...

Hutton, Drenthe, Suarez --> Evans, Mata, Yakubu, for 8 point hit

Makes any sense? Hutton has a terrible schedule, Drenthe is not 100 % and Suarez is facing FA trouble. Plus I have no clear captain for this weak, which Yakubu could be.

Have VDV and Silva (Bale also) and want Nani in, but I am thinking of shipping Silva for him. I just wonder if it is time to cash out on Silva with difficult fixtures and Xmas rotation, plus I have a feeling VDV could surprise some people against Sunderland. Am I crazy?

    Ok - Kompany out.

Should it be Walker or Assou-Ekotto in? (have funds for wither)

Already have a bit of money in defence - P.Jones, Baines and Enrique (Simpson).
With that in mind, I am leaning towards latter and use the difference later on to upgrade Ramsey.

I'm guessing Dyer sells for 4.6 or 4.7? In which case you have 6 million exactly I should think? If you can stretch to 6.2 you can in Sinclair or Eagles. If not I personally think that Jarvis, O'Hara or even Hunt could be better options than Eagles until WC. If you really want to throw in a differential, what about Song?

anyone think VdV is gonna fall again before the weekend? Basically I bought him for 9.7, he now sells at 9.8, so if he falls again my profit is gone, but it'd mean taking a 4 point hit, which I'm reluctant to do.

He's worth £10m at the moment so you have £0.1m cushion.

It basically just means if VDV scores points his value will go back up so don't chase value. If your team is good, value will find you.

Don't take VDV out this week - he's gone if he doesn't deliver this Sunday though.

I'm in a couple of leagues, one of which is a work league with only three of us in it. I'm leading by just over 100 points from the other two but I've just had to explain to one of them how to change formation....the poor guy evidently thought that because he played 4-4-2 in GW1 that he was confined to that formation every week! Looking over his previous weeks' scores, he has missed out on so many benched mid/forward points, the last being Sturridge's 8 points from yesterday.

He's missed: Ba's 5 goals and and two assists, Elmohamady's goal, Larsson's goal and assist, Jones' 3 clean sheets and a goal (not a result of formation, just weird leaving him out), now Sturridge's two assists. Plus bonuses for all of these (bar Sturridge).

Add to that he played his WC last week for 5 changes, one of which was Ba OUT!

Why am I only 100 points ahead?!

        And it's his second season....

It's a shame because it would be good to be in a league with mates or colleagues that took it semi-seriously. Although my other league is more competitive, I know no-one in it apart from the brother-in-law, so there's no banter/rivalry.

    Vorm (Krul)
    Enrique, Jones, Vermaelen (RTaylor, Monk)
    Nani, Silva, Walters, Bale (Dyer)
    RVP, Ba(c), Adebayor(vc)

    1) Walters & Vermaelen out for Mata & Shotton/Wilkinson
    2) Adebayor out for Sturridge

I still maintain that VdV is a better fantasy player than Bale so would prefer Bale > Nani/Mata.

I'm sure most would disagree with this though.

        It's coming down to:

        A) VDV>Nani
        B) Bale>Mata
        C) Nothing.

More likely to be C at the moment...

whats your full team mate? im in the same boat as you i think. this is my team as follows:

      vorm moreira
      pjones rtaylor enrique kompany turner
      silva vdv bale ferguson ramsey
      ade ba rvp

i have 2m in the bank and i want to take out ramsey for mata or nani. but to do that i need to free up some cash maybe downgradgin kompany.

if vdv is a doubt on saturday he will come out straight away for mata. planning on bringing nani after the fulham away game

You have 2 frees so I don't see a problem in doing what you're thinking about! Kompany to maybe Evans and Ramsey to Nani/Mata would be killer for next week. I really don't see Fulham scoring against us!

i aint got two free but im sick of ramsey to be honest. im going to take a 4point hit to bring in mata or nani.

do you think nani will do much in next two games?

            Ahhh sorry about that.

I think he will yes, others think that Nani won't but I think he will, he's averaging 6 points per game at the moment, that's gold.

TBH you don't need help, that team is fine for this week, keep your transfer and next week take out Brunt for either Walters or Larsson and you'll still have 2 frees to make any other potential changes the following week.

JKISTHE1- back to your fletcher comments on previous post.
Reminds me of G.Nev – Not blessed with ability but worked unbelievably hard to get where they are and showed tremendous passion for the club/country anytime they were on the pitch.
Shame his career is going to be cut short

Eduardo - bench Larsson or walters

Going to have to stick with Baines for a couple of weeks but after that the prospect of having RVP, Rooney, Silva and Mata is going to be very very tempting.
