With Chelsea’s win over Man City signing off the gameweek, we tip our hats to Swansea’s “Penalty Killer“. United’s return to attacking form merits our attention, while Emmanuel Adebayor’s spot-kick duties give us more food for thought on the Tottenham front.

The Player

Michel Vorm is arguably the season’s Fantasy success story so far. Swansea’s £1.5 million signing from Utrecht represents incredible value, both in Premier League terms and in our own Fantasy realm. With an initial starting value of 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Vorm’s displays and Swansea’s possession game have helped the Dutchman rise to 4.9, with over 30% of FPL squads including him in their ranks.

In many ways that figure is surprising. Vorm is far and away the best option for a keeper spot in our squads – even at 4.9, his form and Swansea’s ability to keep clean sheets at the Liberty Stadium show no sign of waning. Saturday’s display in the 2-0 win over Fulham saw the latest round of heroics. Vorm recorded six saves – his ninth return of FPL save points this term. He also stopped his second penalty of the season – diving to keep out Clint Dempsey’s spot-kick to keep Swansea’s clean sheet intact and earn Vorm further returns in the process. Somehow FPL bonus failed to follow; revealing a flaw in the EA PPI calculation, rather than in Vorm’s display.

Swansea’s form on their travels, however, has been the one drawback in their season so far and it’s a factor that is heavily reflected in Vorm’s points distribution. The home comforts of the Liberty Stadium have seen him return 56 points from 8 games, whereas on the road, he’s picked up just 20 points in seven fixtures; a home average of 7 drops to 3 away. Vorm’s abilities looks set to be put to the test over the next few home fixtures, though, with Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea heading to Wales in three of his next four home encounters.

With the festive wildcard available after the gameweek 20 deadline, the next five gameweeks sees a number of keepers dovetail perfectly with Vorm for home/away fixtures. Tim Krul, Wayne Hennessey and Paul Robinson all stand out in the sub 5.0 bracket, with Tim Howard and Brad Friedel –given both have a double gameweek 20- also proving worthy options before we’re given the opportunity to shake things up again.

The Team

There’s no doubt the loss of Nemanja Vidic will prove significant to United’s resilience at the back. Stung by the 6-1 home defeat handed out by City, Vidic’s return from a calf injury coincided with a run of 4 clean sheets in five but Fergie’s side were producing minimal attacking returns, with a single goal in each of their last seven home matches prior to Saturday’s showdown with Wolves.

Suddenly, the shackles are off again. With Vidic sidelined for the rest of the season, Fergie may feel United’s best form of defence is to go on the attack. Stung by their Champions League exit at Basel the previous Wednesday, United provided an Old Trafford response that gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over ahead of the festive schedule.

Wayne Rooney’s brace sees him enter our thoughts once again after an eight-game goalless streak. Nani’s double, supplemented by an assist, came courtesy of a move over to the left flank- a role that saw him end last season as top-scoring FPL player. With Antonio Valencia returning to the right wing and providing 3 assists, Ashley Young’s owners may be shifting a little nervously. Valencia, at 7.8, is 2.0 cheaper than Young and with an ownership of just 0.4%, could prove a handy differential if he establishes himself as a first-team fixture once more.

The champions’ timely return to form, ahead of a very favourable schedule, may well persuade many to invest in their attacking assets over the next few gameweeks; with Wigan and Blackburn rolling up to Old Trafford in gameweeks 18 and 19 respectively, suddenly Robin Van Persie may have competition for the armband all over again.

The Talking Point

As Tottenham laid siege to the Stoke City goal in Sunday afternoon’s showdown at the Britannia, a trip by Glenn Whelan on Luka Modric inside the box offered the visitors a chance to halve the 2-0 deficit. What happened next, though, was entirely unexpected. As owners of Rafael Van der Vaart sat back in anticipation of a converted spot-kick, Emmanuel Adebayor stepped up instead to coolly find the net.

Adebayor had taken the club’s last penalty at West Brom, prodding home the rebound after Ben Foster had saved his initial effort, but Van der Vaart had missed that game, with his troublesome hamstring playing up once again. Having previously been the number one for penalty duties, it was assumed he’d resume the mantle but it seems as though Adebayor has jumped ahead of him in the pecking order- a significant blow to the Dutchman’s Fantasy owners.

Van der Vaart has now failed to score, assist or return bonus since gameweek ten. The last five gameweeks have seen him pick up 8 points, with Gareth Bale bagging 44 and Adebayor 41 in comparison. Given that he’s the priciest of the three and with the likes of Nani and Juan Mata looking at some favourable upcoming fixtures, the sales are starting to snowball. Factor in his pesky hamstring and the form of Jermain Defoe and his owners are in something of a quandary.

Tottenham’s fixtures are undoubtedly in his favour, though; four home fixtures in the next five gameweeks, including a double gameweek 20, are supplemented by away trips to Norwich and Swansea- all offer plenty potential. Defoe’s own hamstring issues offered Van der Vaart a way back into the first-team at Stoke and, providing the Dutchman can steer clear of injury, writing off such a proven Fantasy performer ahead of a strong upcoming schedule may be a potentially perilous decision.

Evening everyone. Poor team value (104m)? Trying to fit the big hitters Reeson style? Then have a look at this. my eyes are burning after studying this (Shotton, Senderos and Bramble were also involved) but if you have nailed on players Gabbidon, McAuley, Simpson and Naylor (play J Evans every week) then you get the following selection of fixtures per GW:

    17 SUN WBA
    18 BOL QPR
    19 EVE
    20 NOR AVL
    21 NOR QPR
    22 WIG ful
    23 ful avl bla
    24 WOL AVL
    25 NOR wol
    26 FUL WOL
    27 EVE SUN
    28 bol
    29 NOR wig
    30 NEW EVE
    31 eve
    32 BLA NEW
    33 BOL QPR
    34 QPR BLA
    35 STO bol
    36 AVL WOL
    37 bol STO
    38 eve

Couple of dodgy weeks, but on the whole it could be awesome for us ubers.

      Van Persie Rooney Aguero

Having no Chelsea coverage didn't bother me as I am solid every week but starting to think that Augerio and Silva have slowed down.

Have two FTs and not sure if I need to do anything. Can just sit tight.

Incredible run of games. Still though, there are problems:

1 - Evans possibly won't be playing that much when the twins come back / Cleverley + Ando push Jones into defence
2 - QPR and WBA are average sides who don't really keep many clean sheets
3 - Right now it looks worth the money to pay extra for names like Jones and Vermaelen who are reeling in the points
4 - What if the Newcastle and Swansea bubbles burst?

        1. This is true. When Evans does miss out, it is auto sub time. For those with Enrique (missed that boat) then he can be your every week defender. With Fletcher out, I think the back 5 v Wolves is pretty safe, but the twins could hamper things.
        2. Aside from BOL and MCY, QPR have been decent at home and picked up some CSs away. WBA have kept one CS less than City.
        3. This is also a good argument, but most weeks they will achieve 6 points best.
        4. I readjust. They're only cheap. 3 CSs again this week tells it's own story.

So I have Jose Enrique. I also have Michel Vorm as GK, and would be reluctant to double him up with Naylor. My other defenders read Samba - Baines - Assou Ekotto - Wilkinson. What would you recommend I do? I must be honest, your plan looks a decent one, especially with the paltry amount of clean sheets around this season, fantastic work too!

cheers mate, I'm a bit weary now as it's tested the grey matter! I'm no expert but I do like different strategies.

In your case, I'd keep BAE and Enrique, play them most weeks and get three ultra cheapies to rotate to accomodate the big hitters.

Baines - keep till the DGW then chuck. Everton can't score nor can they keep CSs. I love him in his own right but he's a luxury.

Samba - scrap. Blackburn and Norwich don't do cleanies.

Wilk - keep, but only if nailed on, which I don't think he is.

Totally agree with Baines mate. I've got two free transfers this week, so I may use them to start the ball rolling at once. I was in a bit of a no mans land in anyway regarding my team. Not much left in bank after wildcard usage a few weeks back.

I've seen teams with my front 8 and a strong backline, but a poor team value means my defence has to suffer.

Verm - I love. Good chance of goals, CSs with great fixtures. Expensive and would I captain?

Jones - Expensive, not quite nailed on. Utd will struggle for cleanies without Vidic. Still a great option, though.

With there fixtures I think Man U will still get a decent amount of clean sheets. I'm doubling up on Jones Evans for the next 4 weeks. Your tactics seem sound though, just different to mine. I'd rather have six string players up front meaning you rotate two players to fill one remaining position and have a reasonably strong back line and still play 3-4-3.

Very interesting. I think my plan for most of the season is going to be 2 expensive defenders, currently have Enrique (Bought at 5.1) and Vermaelen, then get in 3 bargain bucket defenders, and as you say rotate.

Vermaelen, Enrique, Olsson, Hibbert, Rangel is my current backline. May just sort them all out with Jan WC, simplest way to do things.

I think ppi should form the basis of the points with some human touch element added on, to add some common sense. It's not that difficult, this years baps system has caused more controversy than ever before

That and the fact that I think the second assist doesn't really count towards PP1 because it was a handball and not a pass for a goal from open play.

As a Sturridge owner it was annoying as I drew a cup match 70-70 as a result of not getting anything, but thems are the breaks.

Need to ditch an expensive defender to bring in a big midfielder.
My expensive defs are Jones (6.4) Enrique (5.4) - supporting defs are Raylor, Naylor, Wilkinson.

It's hard to pick one to drop. I'm thinking the Liverpool defence may suffer with Lucas out for ages, and also that I could risk Jones > Evans with Vidic's season-ending injury opening up CB for Evans permanently (O'Shea and Brown were never the best CBs at United but were still regulars for periods). Thoughts? It is pretty painful to drop good defs but the game is going attacking again.

I am keeping for at least this week, Sunderland at home is nothing to sneeze at, only thing that would make me reconsider is any negative press on a further injury picked up sneezing this week or something, that and Martin O'Nil likes to keep it tight and choke the other team to death by playing 10 back.

i had that feeling too. like i had last week and the week before.

        so i sold him yesterday.

maybe the heartache will come this GW but my headache has gone.

      get rid.

use the cash to get in Nani or Mata or Bale or Yaya or someone else.

do it. do it now before VDV's price falls even further.

rather Nani on my bench raring to go next week than VDV on my bench wondering if he'll get a game or pick up a hammy twinge.

    Hi!

Need a very cheap keeper to go with Vorm - is there any point to take cerny anymore?

I have the same question. I might go with Ruddy just because Cerny will lose his place when Kenny comes back. As for Sorensen, i wonder if he will keep his place in the team....

Ruddy. Guaranteed starter. Only play him if vorm injured.

but looking fixtures, I wouldn't play kenny over vorm at once before january wc - so could I just go with 3,9 not playing keeper??????????

Just go Morreira in case vorm is injured. Ruddy is hopeless and you're as well sticking with Swansea.

Yeah tought of that, but there's always that winter and cancelling games......well I can make changes then or play one game without keeper.

There are better ways to spend 7.8m, wait and see how much game time Young gets this next GW, I wouldn't be surprised to see Valencia come in every second game for Nani or Young, just too much for that kind of game time.

The original idea was to get nani in gw18 but by then his price will be +0.5£... Don't want him now, though.

Guess I will wait and see how the next game plays out

Ok Doorsa got lost on last page, get Hennessey this week (Stoke at home after Europa, but side will be second string) or next week (Norwich home) for no hit?

Right looks as if Drenthe may fall in next few days and I am getting sick of him. I have this team so far but made by FT.

    Vorm (given)
    BAE Enrique Jones (Simpson Brown)
    Silva Nani Walters Drenthe (Dyer)
    RVP Ba(C) Ade(v)

    2.9M. Options are:

    A - Drenthe--->Bale or anyone less than 8.9 (suggestions?) (-4)
    B - Drenthe--->OHara or Jarvis (-4)
    C - Given--->Sorensen (-4)
D - Stick and play Simpson
