Micah Richards is on course for a return against Arsenal this weekend. The Toure brothers are to delay their departure for the African Cup of Nations. Damian Duff returns for Fulham in tonight’s Europa League game with Odense, while Mike Williamson hands Alan Pardew a fitness boost by returning to reserve action yesterday.

Reports suggest Micah Richards is set to be fit for Man City’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday. The right-back missed out at Chelsea in his side’s first loss of the campaign but Roberto Mancini is confident he will be ready for the weekend. With Aleksandar Kolarov injured and Gael Clichy suspended, Mancini hinted Richards’ return would allow him to play Pablo Zabaleta in the left-back position against the Gunners.

Mancini also received a boost ahead of next month’s African Cup of Nations. The Italian is a former team mate of Ivory Coast manager Francois Zahoui and their relationship has reportedly allowed him to delay the departure of Yaya and Kolo Toure for vital cup clashes. The tournament starts on January 21 and participants can call up their players a fortnight before the kick-off but City are expected to be allowed to hold on to the pair for their FA Cup clash with Man United on the 8th, as well as the first-leg of their Carling Cup semi final against Liverpool three days later.

Fabian Delph has returned to Aston Villa training ahead of the home clash with Liverpool. The midfielder missed Saturday’s win at Bolton with a knee knock but assistant boss Peter Grant expects him to be available for selection this weekend, as the fixtures start to pick up pace.

Gael Givet is set to give the Blackburn back line a boost by returning to action this weekend. The left-back was subbed off at Sunderland due to heart palpitations but has trained ahead of Saturday’s Ewood Park clash with West Brom.

Yesterday’s news that Darren Fletcher is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a bowel condition looks set to further boost the game time of Phil Jones. With Nemanja Vidic also ruled out for the season, the Scotsman’s unfortunate illness also leaves a gap in the champions’ central midfield. Jones’ versatility has seen him play in central midfield of late and with the ability to shift to right-back or centre-half also in his locker, Jones seems to be an integral part of the United first-team over the ensuing months.

Mike Williamson came through 45 minutes of Newcastle’s reserve clash with Bolton yesterday as he steps up his recovery from an ankle injury. Alan Pardew fielded a back-four without any recognised centre-halves at Norwich but Williamson’s recovery, in addition to the possibility of Fabricio Coloccini’s return for the weekend game at home to Swansea, will be a welcome boost over the festive period.

Damian Duff has recovered from a calf problem in time for Fulham’s Europa League game with Odense this evening. Danny Murphy continues to miss out due to an ankle injury and Mark Schwarzer is expected to shrug off a spine problem to take his place between the sticks.

on paper they're strong and the fixtures are strong.

but MCI seem hell bent on scoring goals. it doesn't matter if the opposition score, MCI want to score one more.

can't see many 1-0 scores there. always going to be 3-1 or 5-2.

    Vorm - Given

    Kompany - Jose Enrique - Ward - Brown - N Taylor

    VDV - Silva - Ramsey - Drenthe - Sinclair

    RVP - Adebayor - Sturridge

Im gonna forget Given because I feel that my midifeld is very weak at the moment. I have 2 free transfers and 0.5 in the bank. I'm thinking VDV > Nani and Ramsey > O'Hara? But to be honest I'm completely stuck :/

so i sold him this week,

I can't talk myself into selling a player who I'd consider captaining this GW .. ie VDV. Sunderland at home ... if he doesnt bag 8 or more, he's gone. (Probably on Sunday night)

seriously, i've had the same discussion with myself for the past few weeks and i decided to drop him.

He might do, but I think that's a risk worth taking this week.

Would you regret it more if you took him out (potentially for a hit) for Nani and VDV scored 14, Nani scores 3 or if you didn't make the transfer and Nani scored 14, VDV scores 3?

I'd downgrade one of your 6m midfielders- probably Ramsey if Drenthe is fit, to a >5m midfielder. This will give you much more money to play with to either upgrade your defense/ midfield.

yeah I was considering that actually. The money would go to my midefield certainly because Sinclair's 11 point haul were my biggest midfield returns since Silva in the 6-1 win. However, O'Hara is the cheapest player I would consider at this moment unfortunately

Yeah, no shame in doubling up on the Man U defence with their fixtures - look at Smalling too who might give you more going forward than J Evans. Might also be worth considering getting another Spurs player in there ready for the double GW.

Begovic & Wilkinson --> Sorenson & Walker may seem a little dull but I think it could be fairly effective.

Like Schwarzer & Krul as options, Sorenson too. Considering there's a WC in January, Guzan isn't the worst option in the world but they have some tricky games.

Frtaboy this keeper malarkey is tough, everytime I look at Foster's fixtures I get games where I just go NO, but that happens with every keeper, I just can't shake the fact that I think there may be better keepers for less (Sorensen, Hennessey) or similar amounts (Schwarzer)

then for 2 weeks I have 2 keepers away vs Ba, I'd rather have Westwood away at QPR, then switch in GW19, oh well I think I may see if I can get Tiote out and get Krul in otherwise it toss a coin for Foster or Sorensen

a sideways move, maybe Moses 😯 I have VdV, Bale, Silva and Nani, so said midfielder would just be bench fodder, I just need to free up a Newcastle slot.

Right, i'm new to this site... I think a serious debate is due about the dutchman VDV!

    my team:
    Vorm, Krul
N Taylor, Bardsley, Enrique, Simpson, Bosingwa
    Silva, VDV, Bale, Pilkington, Dyer
    Yakubu, Adebayor, RVP

Not doin too well, 0.1 in bank, 1FT. Don't want to take a hit. I have faith in VDV. I think if he gets given another chance after his stoke performance then he'll do well. But should i get rid for nani? Or should i sit it out? Or any other advise is very welcome!

You have to keep VDV for Sunderland at home. Not taking the penalty against Stoke was a huge surprise (for me anyway), but he's on corners and set pieces and a lot of Tottenham's play goes through him.

I can see games where Adebayor is picked up by the centre back partnership and VDV is left to ghost in and receive the cut-backs from Bale and Lennon. I'm going to keep the faith for now.

If teams score more then 1 which a lot of these are likely too then save points won't matter that much. If Tottenham come and score a few, and then Arsenal, and then Chelsea, their confidence will be gone and Norwich will score.

Worst: Wigan, Aston Villa, Everton, Wolves

Lately Stoke have been terrible at both home and away.
Spurs were robbed of 2-3 goals and Everton are just plain shit.
Before that they had conceded 1 to Blackburn (H) 3 to QPR (H) 5 to Bolton (A) 3 to Newcastle (H) and 3 to Arsenal (A)
That's what? 15 goals in 5 games with 3 at home?

All depends what timescale you consider - Stoke defence went through an awful patch a couple of weeks ago but they seem to be on the up again.

Overall it's Stoke conceding 9 in 8 home games and City conceding 15 in 15 overall. Marginal...

Yeah at the time there were a lot of worried ShawX owners and other Stoke owners. I had Wilkinson, don't get the impression he's any good, and he played lots then. The defence is settling back into shape again with ShaxX back.

That is what I am saying, you can't consider them on the up considering they could, and should, have considered 3-4 goals against Spurs.
The Everton game, well, it's Everton.

Fair enough, but you gotta play who you gotta play.

Watched the Spurs match and figured Stoke pressed pretty well and certainly kept Spurs quiet for the whole first half. It got messy in the second half, but ultimately Spurs failed to score from open play and had to rely on a penalty. You can point to the near misses, but in general any defence in the league would be proud of restricting Spurs to a single goal from a penalty.

Hence I put them on the best list! 😀

As a Gooner I of course find it ludicrous to think our defence is anywhere near the worst in the league. But relative to championship winning defences? I still don't trust it. I think our possession play and midfield shields it. But when it's exposed and under pressure, I don't trust it.

    Folks,

    my front 7
VDV / Mata / Silva / Walters (Gower)
    RvP / Ba / Studge

    0FT now.

Plan to do VDV>Bale & Walters>Nani next week.

Does that make sense? I know everybody here already have Nani and Bale, but I hesitate to do -8pt (again....).

My front 3 is RVP, Adebayor and Sturridge. I'd love Ba or Yakubu for the next two weeks but I really can't fit them in. I'm willing to ship Pilkington out, so is there anyone worth getting from Newcastle's or Blackburn's midfield? I'll have 5.6. I'm looking at Formica or Ben Arfa. Any suggestions?

shotton looked good as right winger but once pennant is back...
he is naturally an attacking RB but stoke cant fit such a player unless they are a goal or 2 down
so he will be a frustration imo unless pulis decides to throw caution away and go with an attacking wingback
caulker is always under threat of rotation from monk, especially this week if newcastl will paly with midgets in CB, since monk is always dangerous on set peices.
the other will consistently return 1-2 pts

reports that wenger is intersted in podolski. he can solve many of arsenal's problems as he can operate both as left winger who cuts inside (german national team position) or as a van persie like striker (koln's role) very consistent and useful player and always good in the big occasions

Afternoon gents...I posted this last night, worth consideration though:

I posted on the Stoke City ‘Oatcake’ site concerning Ryan Shotton’s (4M Stoke player classed as a defender, but playing somewhat OOP on the right of midfield) chances of holding down a starting place. Some interesting replies for those that are interested:

“Some way off yet but game time will make him better, he needs to get over beating himself up about any mistakes he makes and just get on with his game. He miss timed a ball in the box yesterday and after that he seemed to make a number of other silly minor mistakes because the inital one was on his mind…Other than that thought once again showed he has the raw material to make him a future stalwart of the team.”

“I hope he plays Sat because I think he will rip the dingles a new arse.”

“Played a solid game yesterday and helped at the back when he was needed. He showed willingness to take on his man with decent pace and put a few lovely crosses into the box. Add that to the fact he has a peach of a throw on him, hasn’t found his position yet and he’s only 23 and you get a lad that has great potential…If this talk of Pennant leaving us in January is true, I’d personally love to see him get a starting position as it will increase his experience ten-fold.”

“Better as a winger than a full back, needs a bit more game time to prove himself.”
“What he isn’t, and never will be, is a Premiership right winger or midfielder, irrespective of what he’s doing now. It’s possible he might make it at full back but I still doubt it in the long term. And as for potential, if he’s 23 ( I thought he was 22) then how long does that take to come through? He’s in danger of becoming overrated.”

Essou Ekoto knew he’d been in a game yesterday..bet he was gald to get back on the bus down saaarrff...Physically Shotts was too much for him, technically he’s allright and plays to his strengths. Nothing flash just hard to knock off the ball and backs himself, decent delivery too. Could be our most improved player by the end of this season if he keeps putting in performances like that one against Spurs.”

“i think theres a lot more to come from him, looking at yesterdays match, there is definately promise in him as a winger. He caused Assou-Ekotto a fair few problems in the firsthalf, and even when he began to tire in the second half, he still managed to carry the ball a good 50/60 yards down the line (something only a few stoke players can do). These surely are good signs for the future.”

“Me,I think he’s a good squad player but he’s not good enough to hold down a regular spot…YET…Pennants a better play but if his Stoke career is over we need to get someone in in january, otherwise Shotton will have to learn quickly…Someone used the word naive yesterday and I’ll go with that”

“His crossing isn’t good enough and for all his endeavour he doesn’t have enough ability to be able to beat full backs with the regularity that we need. He’s more likely to ‘make it’ (regular Premier League starts) as a an attacking fullback but that isn’t really a role we have at Stoke…There’s certainly room for him in our squad but I see him as being a sort of Danny Pugh type utility player. Hope he proves me wrong.”

“Some things he did very well, some things he looked naive and quite a few mistakes were made . He’s still learning and looks a very promising player in the years to come.”

“There is certainly an amount of pressure on Ryan and this is probably self made pressure. He has broken into the First team and knows that TP will be putting him under scrutiny during this period and you can tell that when he makes mistakes it gets to him.”

“Its all or nothing with Ryan. I remember the game against Spurs in the Cup. His crossing and general play was pretty poor that day. Yet on Sunday, in the first half, he was up and down and putting decent balls into the box and was my MOM for that half. Into the 2nd half and it was a different story. He was struggling to put the balls into the right areas and making the wrong decisions. There were a few times where I was pretty sure that if Pennant would of been on we would of punished Spurs on the counter. I do think that his improvement gives us hope, but not as a wide midfielder. Ryan is best concentrating on nailing down a full back slot. He could give us another attacking dimension from full back as he does give us more quality in the final third than any of the other contenders for that slot.”

“Although he’s played quite a few games in the Europa League, the last two matches are the first he’s started and completed in the Premier League. He needs a good run of games to get acclimatised to the pace and intensity of the Premier League, but once he’s done that I think there’s a great chance he can really compete for that right wing berth…Some of his mistakes are simply down to inexperience, but the more he plays those will hopefully become less frequent, and he has to work on his delivery, though that was much improved on Sunday until late on when he tired…And anyway, judging by his Radio Stoke interview on Sunday, TP clearly thinks the sun shines out of arse, so that’s a good start. “
