Rafael Van der Vaart gets back amongst the points as Gareth Bale misses out with an ankle knock. Wayne Rooney grabs another goal, while Craig Bellamy gives Kenny Dalglish plenty to ponder with another impressive performance…
Antonio Valencia
The winger was again preferred to Ashley Young in the United first XI, lining up on the right flank with Nani out left. Valencia wasted little time in vindicating Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision, providing an assist for Wayne Rooney within the first minute of the game and adding to his trio of assists last week against Wolves. Priced at 7.8, he’ll surely be the subject of plenty investment over the next few days, with home clashes against Wigan and Blackburn on the horizon.

Wayne Rooney
His return to form continued at QPR, with an early goal allowing United to settle early at Loftus Road. Added to his brace against Wolves last time out, Rooney is threatening to start another of his scoring streaks, having previously gone eight games without a goal. With his eye for goal restored, those aforementioned home clashes with Wigan and Blackburn will see many consider him as a viable captaincy alternative to Robin Van Persie over gameweeks 18 and 19.

Craig Bellamy
The Welshman was a constant menace to the home side throughout at Villa Park. With corner kick duties also part of his repertoire, Bellamy added an assist to his early goal thanks to a Martin Skrtel header, though his temperament got the better of him again, as he picked up his third booking in a row. This was only his fourth start of the season and Bellamy has failed to score or assist in only one of those appearances.

Martin Skrtel
The centre-half is proving to be a viable alternative to Jose Enrique in the Liverpool back-four of late. With Jamie Carragher increasingly marginalised, Skrtel has developed a solid understanding with Daniel Agger at the heart of the Reds’ back-four and returned a goal and clean sheet at Villas Park yesterday. At 6.0 to Enrique’s 5.8, Skrtel is only 4 points behind the Spaniard and has now netted twice this season, more than any other member of Kenny Dalglish’s defensive unit.

Jonjo Shelvey
Back from a loan spell with Blackpool which helped him pick up the Championship Player of the Month gong, Kenny Dalglish threw Shelvey into his starting XI, deploying him in front of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, pushed up in support of Luis Suarez. Shelvey reacted with an impressive attacking display, that suggested that he may well contest starts in future weeks. Fantasy managers should be on high alert to his potential – as a 4.8 midfielder, Shelvey would be a hot property if he were to look more secure in the Liverpool lineup.

Rafael Van der Vaart
With Jermain Defoe missing out against Sunderland, the Dutchman was initially partnered alongside Emmanuel Adebayor up top but Aaron Lennon’s withdrawal halfway through the first half saw Van der Vaart moved out right, as Roman Pavlyuchenko came on. His assist for the Russian’s winner was the first time Van der Vaart has contributed to a Spurs goal since gameweek 10 and with Gareth Bale also failing to make an appearance for the first time this season, those who chose to hold onto his services were rewarded with a timely boost.

Harry Redknapp r confirmed post-match that Lennon looks to have torn a hamstring but the Spurs boss is hopeful that Bale will recover from a sprained ankle in time for Thursday’s match against Chelsea. Lennon’s injury leaves Spurs boss with something of a quandary, though. He could retain Van der Vaart wide right, though Bale has also played there this season, too. With Defoe looking likely to be fit and Niko Krancjar and Steven Pienaar available, ‘Arry certainly still has plenty options for the all-London showdown at the Lane.

David Silva
The Spaniard’s winner at the Etihad was, incredibly, his first home goal since the opening day of the season. Silva’s overall consistency, however, means he has only failed to either score or assist in 4 of the 16 gameweeks so far- two of those have been as a sub. He has now edged ahead of Nani as the top-scoring midfielder again, sitting on 100 points.

        Both are hot form and I somehow thing Ba may do some damage after a low scoring GW (but nevertheless with some awesome chances). RVP is safe as I'm sure others in my mini leagues will pick him, however a Ba gamble could help me leapfrog my opponents... RVP has marginally better odds 1.83 vs 2.10.

      Your chances of getting those 4 points with Drenthe are minimal, I can assure you of that. Would in so case have to be with a bonus--I don't see Everton hitting the big numbers anytime soon. Getting Drenthe in when you have one or two FT could be a good move. No doubt he is dominating when he gets the chance to play.

    Repost with extra info - Do we think Johnny Evans is now nailed on for United? How many of the next 6 games do you think he will play? Is Jones worth the extra 2.3m?

    Will the extra money i could do Reo-Coker -> Walters, so do you think it is worth getting Evans instead of Jones?

      Replied on the previous page but you might have missed it:

      Yeah I think so, very much first choice alongside Ferdinand at the moment. Can see Rio being rested a couple of games over Christmas so I expect Evans to feature heavily.

      I was thinking about the same transfer but with Jones playing in midfield and getting into some great goalscoring positions lately I’m very reluctant to take him out.

      No room for both?

    Need to take a 4 point hit to drop Dyer to field 10.

    Vorm
    Brown Simpson Enrique Jones
    Drenthe Silva(v) Nani
    Ba RVP(C) Adebayor

    Given BAE Walters Dyer

    1FT, 2.9 in bank. Do I;

    1 - Save FT
    2 - Brown-->Evans/Gabbidon
    3 - Given ---> Sorensen
    4 - Dyer ---->Shelvey/sub 5M mid (to play in place of Brown)

      Why not just play Walters or Dyer? I've got a similar team and it's what I'll be doing if Bale doesn't make it.

      I'm looking at doing Brown - Evans or Given to Sorensen this week, or maybe both.

          Yeah Shelvey might be worth a punt, although it's a bit risky taking punts like that going into rotation season. Replacing Dyer with a certain starter is probably the best thing to do if you don't think he'll play, you've got the money to do it too.

            I could easily Larsson etc but that gives me a headache on which on my front 8 to bench every week. Dyer to gower/allen/moses could be good for other weeks but not this. Tempted by Shelvey as spearing still out.

            or just save the FT and go 4 at back or walters in place of brown?

              Yeah that's the thing, you really need bench fodder in that position long term. But you also need them to be nailed on this time of year, so Shelvey is risky.

              I reckon just bite the bullet with Brown or Walters this week and give yourself more time to find a long term Dyer replacement. The 3 you mention are my preferences too.

    I'm just wondering if there's anyone else I could consider for a Lennon replacement other than Nani - I have a feeling that he'll be rotated with Park, Giggs, Valencia, Young and Nani all capable of playing on either wing.

    Please RMT

    Krul (Vorm)
    Jones Baines Enrique Simpson (Naylor)
    Nani Silva Bale (Walters, Dyer)
    RVP Studge Ade

    Team value=109.8 with 0.4 in the bank and 2 free transfers

    I am feeling the stress of the Christmas fixture list and needs some help! The prospect of a fully fit VDV and the prospect of Bale’s price dropping like a stone if he misses another gameweek is making me look at ways back in for VDV. To do this the dispensable option appears to be Baines, but I really want to hold off until gw18. My strategy between now and the DGW is along the lines of;

    Gw17 – Walters > Drenthe
    Gw18 – Baines > Vorm & Bale > VDV

    The alternative may be to do Baines > Jags which free’s up additional funds for later on.

    Does this strategy look sound?Does anybody have any other suggestions or advice?

      It seems nobody is scoring week in week out. Best policy seems to be no transfers! For what it's worth on Spurs, I've kept Bale and VDV. But maybe that's illogical if their average score together is 3...

    First time request for help, please:
    What are the chances of Bale being fit for the game against Chelsea?

    And/or would it be worth temporarily swapping Bale for
    A) Modric or B) Cheaper alternative E.g. Larsson, Etherington.

    Current midfield is Silva, Nani, Walters & Bale (Romeu)

    Thanks in advance

        I know but I was thinking, well hoping that Modric pulls a good performance out as he always seems to do well against the bigger teams and is due a goal or an assist. As it stands if Bale doesn't play my sub will likely be Romeu who would probably only get a point.

        @Freshy I 've got Romeu as he seems the best of a bad bunch (E.g. not Ferguson) and seems to be getting a fair amount of game time recently so hoping the goals will follow
