Daniel Sturridge continues to prosper in spite of Chelsea’s DW Stadium stumble. Stoke’s record-breaking run brings their assets to the fore, while injuries are already beginning to bite for certain key Fantasy performers, making strong benches a must over the festive period.

The Player

While other captain candidates faltered, Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge returned on his recent form with another superb strike in Chelsea’s stalemate with Wigan. Released by a sublime Ashley Cole pass, Sturridge controlled and fired home in two touches to hand Chelsea a lead they relinquished thanks to woeful hesitancy from Petr Cech. Fantasy managers won’t care too much about that, however, it’s Sturridge’s form that is of interest.

Four goals in five games for the England U21 has seen him earn extra recognition from Fantasy managers and, with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 7.1 and rising, that seems certain to continue. Chelsea travel to White Hart Lane on Thursday night with Sturridge primed to test Benoit Assou-Ekotto and continue his goal streak.

Regardless of his fortunes in that one, with his starting role surely assured, Sturridge’s potential for future returns looks strong. Chelsea’s fixtures run into a spell of three home games in four from gameweek 18, with Fulham, Villa and Sunderland all at the Bridge. The Sturridge stock goes on rising.

The Team

Stoke’s 2-1 victory at Molineux was their fourth straight league win, lifting them to the heights of eighth place. The run has seen several of Tony Pulis’ players edge their way onto our radars.

Having notched six league goals last season, Robert Huth’s deflected free-kick against Wolves offered a reminder of his goal-getting abilities. While Kevin Doyle’s deflection reduced Huth’s contribution to an assist on Saturday, his substantial threat at set-plays had already seen him score a vital winner against Everton back in gameweek 14. Huth is clearly in favour once again and back as a key figure in the Stoke unit.

The same can be said for Matt Ehterington, who earned the assist for Peter Crouch’s winner – arriving off the back of his two goals in the win over Spurs in gameweek 15. The winger has earned back-to-back bonus point maximums as a result. Crouch himself has also come to the fore, with two goals and an assist, coupled with five bonus points, arriving in Stoke’s four-match streak.

All three must now be considerations, alongside this season’s big Fantasy success story – Jon Walters. In comparison, Walters has taken a back seat of late, earning just a couple of assists in Stoke’s winning run.

With games against Villa, Wigan and Blackburn to come in consecutive gameweeks, once the trip to City is disposed of, Stoke’s assets look well worthy of further consideration.

The Talking Point

Unexpected injuries to a couple of prime Fantasy assets tested the strength of many a manager’s bench over the weekend. Both Gareth Bale and Ryan Taylor picked up knocks in training last Friday but neither Harry Redknapp or Alan Pardew mentioned these respective this in the pre-weekend press conferences.

With the games coming thick and fast, recovery time is at a minimum and managers are rightly reluctant to take risks with their players’ fitness. Only this afternoon we heard the news that Jamie O’Hara is out of Wolves’ game with Norwich tomorrow night, meaning he has missed home clashes with both Stoke and the Canaries- both were potentially profitable encounters for his Fantasy owners.

Ryan Taylor’s 35% Fantasy owners will be anxiously awaiting any update tomorrow – with Newcastle not playing until Wednesday, though, and Gameweek 17’s deadline at 7.30 tomorrow evening, a strong back-up choice looks essential if he misses out again. Davide Santon impressed at left-back in Taylor’s absence, picking up the 3 bonus points against Swansea and Alan Pardew knows he has an able replacement at hand if he chooses not to risk Taylor.

Bale’s 33% owners will be hoping his omission from yesterday’s win over Sunderland was merely an exercise in caution, with a huge match against Chelsea on the horizon this Thursday evening. The Welshman had played every minute of Tottenham’s season up until the game against the Black Cats, but it’s clear they lacked a cutting edge in his absence. Aaron Lennon’s hamstring injury merely adds to Redknapp’s woes and may even continue to have a knock-on effect on Rafael Van der Vaart, with the Dutchman shifted out wide right upon his withdrawal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

worth keeping a close eye on james mcclean for sunderland….4.5 mid and impressed as sub in the two games under o’neill.. word on the sunderland forum is that bardsley was carrying a knock and hence why he was subbed off in the game against spurs.

This pushed Richardson back to left back and opened the door for McClean to play left wing……if news comes out officially bout bardsley injury then a bargain could be got for 4.5

Would like Evans alright but already have my United quota with Jones, Nani and Rooney. Simpson looks a runner for next couple of gameweeks.
De Laet is going for Caulker next week, straight swap - not worth taking a hit to do it this week. Am just hoping Caulker doesn't rise before then...

Again, it's irrelevant that he's playing Jones. Give yourself the best odds for clean sheets regardless of teams. The variance caused by doubling up will even out over 38 gameweeks.

You think doubling on MUN defenders away at FUL is a good move? I'm not so sure - FUL normally score at home. I agree though, Ramsey has been dire from a fpl perspective for ages. Would be just typical if I drop him and he goes nuts this week!

Jones offers as much attacking threat as Ramsey currently and the decision to include Evans would be supported by the fact Utd have the best defensive record way from home.

Hmm, yeah you could be right. I don't actually have Evans yet, but was planning on doing Brown -> Evans tonight before the price rise. I guess my options are either

            a) save the transfer for next week (when it could come in handy if Suares gets banned and the London games are called off), or
            b) do Brown -> Evans and bench Ramsey.

            Best move?

I like the idea of bringing Evans in and would consider doing it myself if I wasn't capped on Utd players after jerkin' in Rooney this week.

I heard that the London games being rescheduled wouldn't change the gameweek they would be played in? The Suarez point is one to consider though....

could be, but with big mids hitting big points, and RVP + one of ade/rooney/aguero seemingly essential, you'd be sacrificing midfield points for a 3rd pricey striker. if the +1 you have is rooney and you're concerned about his getting rested, than rooney > hernandez would be the way to go.

all that said, if a strike is going to happen (and these things take time to get sorted once they start, especially in the current economic climate), hernandez in for RVP (though anathema to most, including myself, around here) might be a savvy move, as united don't play in london until jan 22. there's next week's trip to fulham, but that's before the strike is scheduled to start, if it goes ahead. arsenal are playing in london every week from GW18-20.

very interesting point, the strike could play a big part. Would be a huge gamble but seems everyone has silva, RVP, nani, ade, bale etc so a move towards the next 'bandwagon' could be profitable. id have to lose RVP and nani (have 3 ufd already) so might wait until after this week! would like to see hernandez get more game time and fergie offer a quote or 2 of encourgement!

    Team:
    Vorm, (Westwood)
Evans, Taylor R, Enrique, Richards (Brown)
    Bale, Adam, Arteta, Silva (Dyer)
    RVP, Adebayor (Helguson)

the way arteta's playing of late, i think it would be a sound move shipping him out regardless of team finance. he's playing REALLY deep in midfield these days.

Gower is currently on 79 on FISO; I'd like to bring him in, but need .1 available first, and need another transfer so that Tiote--> Gower would be possible

do you think Gower will go up tonight?

considering either Simpson or Wilkinson --> Caulker to free up that .1

    Vorm, Walters, BAE, Naylor

0 in the bank and 1 free. Thinking of holding it. Thought I may as well take a punt on Moses as Wigan are at least home and the three on the bench don't have good fixtures. He has been pretty decent and attacking lately and wigan got a draw with chelsea so u never know. Is everything right??

Nice team, your weakest links are having 2 Sunderland players and Moses. You're bench players have tough fixtures so you have to go with what you have. Crazy move...sell Larsson and get Drenthe maybe....

      KDA

Brunt and Simpo cancel each other out, Studge vs. Tot

Ade will do jack all, Kompany CS, and Drenthe will bring a sheep back to life before killing it with a kick to the neck - proving Drenthe giveth and he taketh away.

      Simples.

Would appreciate some thoughts on the below transfers:

    2FT, 1.0m in the bank

    Shawross > Jagielka
    Sessegnon > Drenthe

Lacking decent bench coverage this week (NDyer, DaLaet - out), worth taking a 4pt hit to transfer one of the two to ensure cover in case Bale fails to show for the match against Chelsea?

    Cheers

You need to fix you're bench and it sucks having to use 2 transfers on that. Don't take out Shawcross, he has nice games coming up. Dyer > Gower, De Laet > Brown or 4.5 or less defender. Next priority should be to get rid of Sess.

Hi guys, is HBA worth bringing in against WBA? I have a FT and think he might do well if he is starting...definite risk though....but I am replacing him with Ferguson so no harm if he doesn't start...

    Current defence:

    Richards, Jones, Enrique, Brown, Simpson

Transferring Vermaelen in for Richards, was also looking at Brown>Evans but I've got Jones as United cover and it's already pretty solid, so I'm thinking of going even cheaper i.e Caulker, Shotton. That would leave me with some cash as opposed to not having anything left in the bank. (I'm also doing Eagles>Drenthe, which would use up the rest)

Still worth getting Evans in do we think, or would a cheaper option suffice?

Currently have the following team set up for next GW, thinking about leaving it as it is and saving my transfer so I can do a double change of Jones/Kompany or Verm/Enrique in for Wilkinson/Baines – lots of money tied up in Baines plus Wilkinson doesn’t seem to be getting the minutes and I want a full playing squad for the xmas schedule, this look ok?

    Ruddy

    Evans – Baines – Simpson

    Drenthe – Nani – VDV – Silva

Van Persie – Sturridge – BA

    Subs.Vorm / Allen / Wilkinson / McAuley

    cheers.

Is your rival's captain choice a punt or do you have insider info? 🙂

Either way, I like your team and also the idea of captaining Ba after he failed to live up the expectation of topping the captains poll last GW.
