Daniel Sturridge continues to prosper in spite of Chelsea’s DW Stadium stumble. Stoke’s record-breaking run brings their assets to the fore, while injuries are already beginning to bite for certain key Fantasy performers, making strong benches a must over the festive period.

The Player

While other captain candidates faltered, Chelseaโ€™s Daniel Sturridge returned on his recent form with another superb strike in Chelseaโ€™s stalemate with Wigan. Released by a sublime Ashley Cole pass, Sturridge controlled and fired home in two touches to hand Chelsea a lead they relinquished thanks to woeful hesitancy from Petr Cech. Fantasy managers wonโ€™t care too much about that, however, itโ€™s Sturridgeโ€™s form that is of interest.

Four goals in five games for the England U21 has seen him earn extra recognition from Fantasy managers and, with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 7.1 and rising, that seems certain to continue. Chelsea travel to White Hart Lane on Thursday night with Sturridge primed to test Benoit Assou-Ekotto and continue his goal streak.

Regardless of his fortunes in that one, with his starting role surely assured, Sturridgeโ€™s potential for future returns looks strong. Chelseaโ€™s fixtures run into a spell of three home games in four from gameweek 18, with Fulham, Villa and Sunderland all at the Bridge. The Sturridge stock goes on rising.

The Team

Stokeโ€™s 2-1 victory at Molineux was their fourth straight league win, lifting them to the heights of eighth place. The run has seen several of Tony Pulisโ€™ players edge their way onto our radars.

Having notched six league goals last season, Robert Huthโ€™s deflected free-kick against Wolves offered a reminder of his goal-getting abilities. While Kevin Doyleโ€™s deflection reduced Huthโ€™s contribution to an assist on Saturday, his substantial threat at set-plays had already seen him score a vital winner against Everton back in gameweek 14. Huth is clearly in favour once again and back as a key figure in the Stoke unit.

The same can be said for Matt Ehterington, who earned the assist for Peter Crouchโ€™s winner โ€“ arriving off the back of his two goals in the win over Spurs in gameweek 15. The winger has earned back-to-back bonus point maximums as a result. Crouch himself has also come to the fore, with two goals and an assist, coupled with five bonus points, arriving in Stoke’s four-match streak.

All three must now be considerations, alongside this seasonโ€™s big Fantasy success story โ€“ Jon Walters. In comparison, Walters has taken a back seat of late, earning just a couple of assists in Stokeโ€™s winning run.

With games against Villa, Wigan and Blackburn to come in consecutive gameweeks, once the trip to City is disposed of, Stokeโ€™s assets look well worthy of further consideration.

The Talking Point

Unexpected injuries to a couple of prime Fantasy assets tested the strength of many a managerโ€™s bench over the weekend. Both Gareth Bale and Ryan Taylor picked up knocks in training last Friday but neither Harry Redknapp or Alan Pardew mentioned these respective this in the pre-weekend press conferences.

With the games coming thick and fast, recovery time is at a minimum and managers are rightly reluctant to take risks with their playersโ€™ fitness. Only this afternoon we heard the news that Jamie Oโ€™Hara is out of Wolvesโ€™ game with Norwich tomorrow night, meaning he has missed home clashes with both Stoke and the Canaries- both were potentially profitable encounters for his Fantasy owners.

Ryan Taylorโ€™s 35% Fantasy owners will be anxiously awaiting any update tomorrow โ€“ with Newcastle not playing until Wednesday, though, and Gameweek 17โ€™s deadline at 7.30 tomorrow evening, a strong back-up choice looks essential if he misses out again. Davide Santon impressed at left-back in Taylorโ€™s absence, picking up the 3 bonus points against Swansea and Alan Pardew knows he has an able replacement at hand if he chooses not to risk Taylor.

Baleโ€™s 33% owners will be hoping his omission from yesterdayโ€™s win over Sunderland was merely an exercise in caution, with a huge match against Chelsea on the horizon this Thursday evening. The Welshman had played every minute of Tottenhamโ€™s season up until the game against the Black Cats, but itโ€™s clear they lacked a cutting edge in his absence. Aaron Lennonโ€™s hamstring injury merely adds to Redknappโ€™s woes and may even continue to have a knock-on effect on Rafael Van der Vaart, with the Dutchman shifted out wide right upon his withdrawal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Rarely do these gambles pan out. Jokes aside monitor the health of Zamora and Bent carefully. Regardless of Bent's health i think they could get CS'd again. But if Zamora doesn't play again I would be wary of playing Evans against a homeside Fulham...remember this is Evans, a good lad but trouble seems to follow him...in the form of red's and own-goals. No way Pool are getting another cleansheet, and Newcastle v WBA has 0-0 written all over it...as could MU v Fulham...but again watch out for that one.

one off i reckon as it was chelsea, maybe they'll do it more against the big boys. either way you wont want to play him v the big boys so shouldn't be an issue. he'd also still have his corners to fall back on.
if you have 4.6 - moses
if you only have 4.5 - gower
if you only have 4.4 - jones.
you get what you pay for and all three should outscore the holding mids like tiote and romeu

    Silva | VDV | Nani | Walters
    Ba | Adebayor | RVP

    Subs: Ruddy: N.Taylor: Simpson: Ferguson

*2 Free Transfers and 0.9 in the bank*

Was thinking Ferguson >Tiote & Walters>Etherington (due to Walters no longer in oOP)

Any suggestions as to who else would maybe a good transfer? was thinking of only doing ferguson as quite happy overall with my team.

    Comments much appreciated, thanks.

    a) Ward --> Evans for a hit?
    b) Ward --> Smalling for a hit?
    c) Don't be daft, keep the 4 pts

Wanted to get this done before Evans and Smalling go up tonight - thoughts??

      a. I don't think Smalling's significantly better than Evans. He might get an assist if you're v lucky. Spend the extra cash somewhere else in your team.

Brought in Tim Cahill at weekend to try add a differential to my team. Starting to feel like it was big mistake even though Everton have excellent fixtures imo.
Can anyone explain his loss of form compared with last season?

Thanks for the article. Interesting write up. In terms of FF probably forced to keep for him for at least one more week, i.e. Swansea at home

My take...Everton fans hate Moyes and Osman, but still Tim even though they know he's a shell of his former self and been unlucky this season. I think they're right, he needs to be dropped but not from the bench squad.

He got injured when away playing for Australia last Jan and came back 'crook' as they say. Hasn't scored since. Personally I think this is a Face/Off thing and the REAL Tim is off being paid a fortune in a Bahrain team, while an imposter got plastic surgery and sent as a replacement.

http://www.goal.com/en/news/3550/asian-cup/2011/01/19/2312927/asian-cup-2011-australia-sweating-over-tim-cahill-fitness Sure he got shot in the leg with a tranq or something near the end of the game and limped off. It all adds up!

Well... massive game tomorrow between Blackburn and Bolton.
We (Bolton) are down if we lose I think. If we drew I could see positive results v Newcastle and Wolves, but without it can't see results improving.

    Nervous

It's not like he has masses of money to spend. Holden being out doesn't help him one bit.
