Daniel Sturridge continues to prosper in spite of Chelsea’s DW Stadium stumble. Stoke’s record-breaking run brings their assets to the fore, while injuries are already beginning to bite for certain key Fantasy performers, making strong benches a must over the festive period.

The Player

While other captain candidates faltered, Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge returned on his recent form with another superb strike in Chelsea’s stalemate with Wigan. Released by a sublime Ashley Cole pass, Sturridge controlled and fired home in two touches to hand Chelsea a lead they relinquished thanks to woeful hesitancy from Petr Cech. Fantasy managers won’t care too much about that, however, it’s Sturridge’s form that is of interest.

Four goals in five games for the England U21 has seen him earn extra recognition from Fantasy managers and, with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 7.1 and rising, that seems certain to continue. Chelsea travel to White Hart Lane on Thursday night with Sturridge primed to test Benoit Assou-Ekotto and continue his goal streak.

Regardless of his fortunes in that one, with his starting role surely assured, Sturridge’s potential for future returns looks strong. Chelsea’s fixtures run into a spell of three home games in four from gameweek 18, with Fulham, Villa and Sunderland all at the Bridge. The Sturridge stock goes on rising.

The Team

Stoke’s 2-1 victory at Molineux was their fourth straight league win, lifting them to the heights of eighth place. The run has seen several of Tony Pulis’ players edge their way onto our radars.

Having notched six league goals last season, Robert Huth’s deflected free-kick against Wolves offered a reminder of his goal-getting abilities. While Kevin Doyle’s deflection reduced Huth’s contribution to an assist on Saturday, his substantial threat at set-plays had already seen him score a vital winner against Everton back in gameweek 14. Huth is clearly in favour once again and back as a key figure in the Stoke unit.

The same can be said for Matt Ehterington, who earned the assist for Peter Crouch’s winner – arriving off the back of his two goals in the win over Spurs in gameweek 15. The winger has earned back-to-back bonus point maximums as a result. Crouch himself has also come to the fore, with two goals and an assist, coupled with five bonus points, arriving in Stoke’s four-match streak.

All three must now be considerations, alongside this season’s big Fantasy success story – Jon Walters. In comparison, Walters has taken a back seat of late, earning just a couple of assists in Stoke’s winning run.

With games against Villa, Wigan and Blackburn to come in consecutive gameweeks, once the trip to City is disposed of, Stoke’s assets look well worthy of further consideration.

The Talking Point

Unexpected injuries to a couple of prime Fantasy assets tested the strength of many a manager’s bench over the weekend. Both Gareth Bale and Ryan Taylor picked up knocks in training last Friday but neither Harry Redknapp or Alan Pardew mentioned these respective this in the pre-weekend press conferences.

With the games coming thick and fast, recovery time is at a minimum and managers are rightly reluctant to take risks with their players’ fitness. Only this afternoon we heard the news that Jamie O’Hara is out of Wolves’ game with Norwich tomorrow night, meaning he has missed home clashes with both Stoke and the Canaries- both were potentially profitable encounters for his Fantasy owners.

Ryan Taylor’s 35% Fantasy owners will be anxiously awaiting any update tomorrow – with Newcastle not playing until Wednesday, though, and Gameweek 17’s deadline at 7.30 tomorrow evening, a strong back-up choice looks essential if he misses out again. Davide Santon impressed at left-back in Taylor’s absence, picking up the 3 bonus points against Swansea and Alan Pardew knows he has an able replacement at hand if he chooses not to risk Taylor.

Bale’s 33% owners will be hoping his omission from yesterday’s win over Sunderland was merely an exercise in caution, with a huge match against Chelsea on the horizon this Thursday evening. The Welshman had played every minute of Tottenham’s season up until the game against the Black Cats, but it’s clear they lacked a cutting edge in his absence. Aaron Lennon’s hamstring injury merely adds to Redknapp’s woes and may even continue to have a knock-on effect on Rafael Van der Vaart, with the Dutchman shifted out wide right upon his withdrawal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Seeing a lot of love for Moses on here as a 5th midfielder but thinking Gomez is worth the extra 0.3 with his set pieces. He's also on 4.2 ppg compared to Moses' 3.0, having played much fewer minutes (I assume he was injured). Anyone agree?

Just some thoughts. Was thinking about why there are certain players I can't touch. Yakubu, Dzeko, Balotelli, Lampard and the like. The problem is they're "explosive but unpredictable". A good FPL player is predictable and can get away with scoring considerably less every game. The "boringly consistent", if you like.

For example, averaging an assist every game selected (Average: 5) works out about the same as 2 goals every three games (4.67 if you're a striker, and 5.33 if you're a midfielder - which is an unlikely scoring record). Bonus points complicate this, but you get the gist of it.

For defenders, averaging a CS in 2/3 games selected (Average: 4.67) still works out better than averaging a CS in 1/5 games and an assist in 2/5 games ( Average: 4). The former is possible for a defender at a top six club if you pick fixtures well, the latter for a minnow defender with great attacking potential.

Clearly if the price is low enough, going for the explosive but unpredictable players (generally at minnow clubs) represents superior value. But it's gotta be loooooooow. And it's easy to get tempted away from your boringly consistent players. If you have the boringly consistent player, he may get outscored by someone almost every week. But you should generally stay away from the explosive but unpredictable player unless 1) they're cheap enough 2) you already have enough boringly consistent players 3) they're on an extended burst of form you think you can predict.

It's also worth noting that it's not surprising people get let down after kneejerking in an explosive but unpredictable player after 1 big score: the statistical term for that is regression to the mean - you observed an unusually high score and his next score is likely to be much lower.

Regardless of whether you gamble, you always need that core of consistent, almost boringly consistent scorers. Epitomised by David Silva!

NIce comment , you got me thinkin...

on silva - do you think he will remain consistant all season or is he in an unbelievably long run of form - e.g. he wasnt this good last season. Also will be get rested in the christmas period (december /january) because mancini wants to rotate his squad.
Are there any midfielders under the price of say.. 10mil that are "mr consistant" because other than the likes of nani, silva and mata there are very few , if any that give consistant returns in the midfield

I think Silva spent last season getting used to the PL, improving gradually. Now he's in the consistent zone - it's clear his average is pretty high. And the fact he's got here in less than 1 1/2 seasons is really terrifyingly good. Earlier in the season Mancini picked him pretty much whenever available, even with CL (and playing there too) - so I think he's nailed on for the Christmas period.

I think Larsson and Walters are the only consistent names below 10m that spring to mind... anyone who knows a few more chip in...

Regression to whose mean, though? An expensive player typically averages more points per game, and an explosive week for him can be followed by another week which although being lower than his average, is still better than a good week for a cheaper player who consistently brings in a weekly points haul around a lower average. Comparing these two players in isolation, you are still better off going for the expensive player.

In terms of your team as a whole, it is all about getting the right balance of the consistent players who will bring home the bacon every week, and the potentially explosive players. It's akin to a fund manager investing in a selection of boring but safe blue chip companies to ensure a basic level of performance in line with the wider market, but adding to this a selection of high risk high reward stocks which might go tits up, but could equally give you a performance which is much better than your basic index tracker.

Yep that's a point regarding whose mean - if the mean is high anyway, they're totally worth it. I suppose in that case you can treat them as "consistent" in the sense that their mean doesn't fall below some acceptable value. Instead of consistent in the variance kind of way. Certainly, the former definition is just fine for us in FPL.

And good analogy with the stock portfolio. In theory in both situations the ultimate objective is to maximize the mean score of your players. And you need to get the boring but safe / high risk high reward tradeoff right for that.

Dividing everyone's mean by their price to get mean value might be a useful first stat...

I wouldn't get a player in for just one week.. you have to spend another just to get him out. That aside, Drenthe is the obvious choice for next gw (home to Swansea), assuming he starts.

Wish I had something more original to suggest, but he's the most obvious transfer to make.

If it goes wrong, at least you can join in the moaning here 😀

Well I have VDV, not interested in Vermalen, simply because it involves too much re-shuffling.
