Daniel Sturridge continues to prosper in spite of Chelsea’s DW Stadium stumble. Stoke’s record-breaking run brings their assets to the fore, while injuries are already beginning to bite for certain key Fantasy performers, making strong benches a must over the festive period.

The Player

While other captain candidates faltered, Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge returned on his recent form with another superb strike in Chelsea’s stalemate with Wigan. Released by a sublime Ashley Cole pass, Sturridge controlled and fired home in two touches to hand Chelsea a lead they relinquished thanks to woeful hesitancy from Petr Cech. Fantasy managers won’t care too much about that, however, it’s Sturridge’s form that is of interest.

Four goals in five games for the England U21 has seen him earn extra recognition from Fantasy managers and, with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 7.1 and rising, that seems certain to continue. Chelsea travel to White Hart Lane on Thursday night with Sturridge primed to test Benoit Assou-Ekotto and continue his goal streak.

Regardless of his fortunes in that one, with his starting role surely assured, Sturridge’s potential for future returns looks strong. Chelsea’s fixtures run into a spell of three home games in four from gameweek 18, with Fulham, Villa and Sunderland all at the Bridge. The Sturridge stock goes on rising.

The Team

Stoke’s 2-1 victory at Molineux was their fourth straight league win, lifting them to the heights of eighth place. The run has seen several of Tony Pulis’ players edge their way onto our radars.

Having notched six league goals last season, Robert Huth’s deflected free-kick against Wolves offered a reminder of his goal-getting abilities. While Kevin Doyle’s deflection reduced Huth’s contribution to an assist on Saturday, his substantial threat at set-plays had already seen him score a vital winner against Everton back in gameweek 14. Huth is clearly in favour once again and back as a key figure in the Stoke unit.

The same can be said for Matt Ehterington, who earned the assist for Peter Crouch’s winner – arriving off the back of his two goals in the win over Spurs in gameweek 15. The winger has earned back-to-back bonus point maximums as a result. Crouch himself has also come to the fore, with two goals and an assist, coupled with five bonus points, arriving in Stoke’s four-match streak.

All three must now be considerations, alongside this season’s big Fantasy success story – Jon Walters. In comparison, Walters has taken a back seat of late, earning just a couple of assists in Stoke’s winning run.

With games against Villa, Wigan and Blackburn to come in consecutive gameweeks, once the trip to City is disposed of, Stoke’s assets look well worthy of further consideration.

The Talking Point

Unexpected injuries to a couple of prime Fantasy assets tested the strength of many a manager’s bench over the weekend. Both Gareth Bale and Ryan Taylor picked up knocks in training last Friday but neither Harry Redknapp or Alan Pardew mentioned these respective this in the pre-weekend press conferences.

With the games coming thick and fast, recovery time is at a minimum and managers are rightly reluctant to take risks with their players’ fitness. Only this afternoon we heard the news that Jamie O’Hara is out of Wolves’ game with Norwich tomorrow night, meaning he has missed home clashes with both Stoke and the Canaries- both were potentially profitable encounters for his Fantasy owners.

Ryan Taylor’s 35% Fantasy owners will be anxiously awaiting any update tomorrow – with Newcastle not playing until Wednesday, though, and Gameweek 17’s deadline at 7.30 tomorrow evening, a strong back-up choice looks essential if he misses out again. Davide Santon impressed at left-back in Taylor’s absence, picking up the 3 bonus points against Swansea and Alan Pardew knows he has an able replacement at hand if he chooses not to risk Taylor.

Bale’s 33% owners will be hoping his omission from yesterday’s win over Sunderland was merely an exercise in caution, with a huge match against Chelsea on the horizon this Thursday evening. The Welshman had played every minute of Tottenham’s season up until the game against the Black Cats, but it’s clear they lacked a cutting edge in his absence. Aaron Lennon’s hamstring injury merely adds to Redknapp’s woes and may even continue to have a knock-on effect on Rafael Van der Vaart, with the Dutchman shifted out wide right upon his withdrawal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Vorm

    Jones, Brown, Raylor

    Bale, VdV, Silva, Nani

    Yak, RvP, Ba(c)

    Subs: Westwood, Tiote, BAE, McAuley

0.7 in bank and 1 free. Planning to save that 1 free, do McAuley – JEvans and Yak to any striker for 6 million or less. Who do you suggest to get me through to at least wc?

      Klasnic or Holt/Morison

Looks similar to my plan, got Evans in one week early though because of price rise and the uncertainty of Bale which gives me decent cover.

Think I'm gonna do Ba > Studge next week, though we always tend to struggle with Fulham at home..

I have to choose a front 7 from:

          VdV Silva Nani Bale Drenthe

          RvP Yakubu Ba

It's a tough call, but think I have to go with one of my two Spurs players considering they're up against Chelsea. Unless you have a better suggestion?

Ba won't be rested - Newcastle will play him to their benefit until he goes to ACON (GW20 - after Utd game). Rooney may be taken off early but likely to start, RVP will be rested and brought on if needed (possibly the WOL game) - e.g Stoke game. Silva will get rotated I reckon, only 1 game though.

Garg just posted a good article on Twitter.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2075914/Royston-Drenthe-gives-David-Moyes-selection-headache.html

Surely they have to go with him and not worry about the defensive part of the game. They need his creativity

He also made comments about not wanting to win games 4-0 and being happier with 2-0. That said the article indicates that he'll be benched for the tougher away games - when he'd probably be benched anyway FPLwise.

        Sorry about that!

Anyway I fear that he might see some rests in away games when Moyes tries to handle the pressure Owen Coyle style. In some of those away games you wouldn't play him anyway, but in my team the 6m midfielder will play a lot and I'm a bit worried by what Moyes does say about him.

Moyes you twat! You've got no money, you somehow manage to get some real talent into your squad after Arteta's departure and you moan about the odd defensive slip up 🙄

Handling the pressure Owen Coyle style was dropping his best midfielder and losing the match.

          Hmmmm.... I see the plan.

Moyes doesn't like Scousers, and he's trying to bore them all to death.

There are a few other newspaper reports on the Everton website, very similar. I was looking to bring him in for Sessegnon, but now I'm not so sure. At least Sess is likely to play 90mins each week.

Repost - Do you think that Shotton is now nailed on for Stoke, and will play most games? He looks a decent buy if he is.

Anyone still have Aguero ? I'm worried he'll be rested vs Stoke since he played full 90 mins yesterday. So, Aguero -> Rooney ?

Yep, and im sticking for ther minute. Major revamp of my squad over the next few weeks, and as his returns havent been that awesome recently, may move him out. I think he'll start vs Stoke

Based on how Villa defend set pieces I think if I had Verm this week I'd probably captain him.

They were terrible last GW. Strange because they have two warriors in the air in Dunne and Collins. Or atleast I thought they were warriors in the air. RVP taking corners so that is something to consider. RVP (assists goals) or Verm (CS goals)?

Bale looking good for the drop.

Need it badly if the Wolves game is called off so I can do Walcott > Bale next week.

Who would you bring in next week?

A.) Yaks > Hernandez (I would have 3 Man U players including Nani and Jones)
B.) Yaks > Sturridge (Would give me Chelsea cover)
C.) Yaks > Ba (Looks extremely dangerous when he has the ball)
D.) Yaks > Morison (Seems consistent and Norwich always score)

On the basis that Ba's fixtures are stiffening, Sturridge. Easily beats Chico for value.

I don't know if you have any spare cash.
      Change Wilko (Evans/Caulkner/Naylor/Santon).
Also need to get Dyer as he is injured at the moment - think Allen/Shelvey(maybe)

Should I do Eagles -> Moses and Kompany -> Vermaelen?

I know Kompany has a good home game but I can't afford to get Vermaelen without taking a hit after he rises tonight...

Wouldn't do that even though I rate Verm. Arsenal's defensive injury situation was appalling before City (where they played 4 CBs) and gets even worse with I think Djourou injured in that match and going off for dodgy-looking Miquel. CS prospects may worsen for Verm and he may be stuck in fullback instead of the roaming CB position we know and love. All good for Kompany.

Also keep Eagles for Blackburn at least - dump if he doesn't deliver. Could be your big payoff.

You already have a rolls-royce defense, I would be downgrading it if anything. Get Evans.
