Daniel Sturridge continues to prosper in spite of Chelsea’s DW Stadium stumble. Stoke’s record-breaking run brings their assets to the fore, while injuries are already beginning to bite for certain key Fantasy performers, making strong benches a must over the festive period.

The Player

While other captain candidates faltered, Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge returned on his recent form with another superb strike in Chelsea’s stalemate with Wigan. Released by a sublime Ashley Cole pass, Sturridge controlled and fired home in two touches to hand Chelsea a lead they relinquished thanks to woeful hesitancy from Petr Cech. Fantasy managers won’t care too much about that, however, it’s Sturridge’s form that is of interest.

Four goals in five games for the England U21 has seen him earn extra recognition from Fantasy managers and, with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 7.1 and rising, that seems certain to continue. Chelsea travel to White Hart Lane on Thursday night with Sturridge primed to test Benoit Assou-Ekotto and continue his goal streak.

Regardless of his fortunes in that one, with his starting role surely assured, Sturridge’s potential for future returns looks strong. Chelsea’s fixtures run into a spell of three home games in four from gameweek 18, with Fulham, Villa and Sunderland all at the Bridge. The Sturridge stock goes on rising.

The Team

Stoke’s 2-1 victory at Molineux was their fourth straight league win, lifting them to the heights of eighth place. The run has seen several of Tony Pulis’ players edge their way onto our radars.

Having notched six league goals last season, Robert Huth’s deflected free-kick against Wolves offered a reminder of his goal-getting abilities. While Kevin Doyle’s deflection reduced Huth’s contribution to an assist on Saturday, his substantial threat at set-plays had already seen him score a vital winner against Everton back in gameweek 14. Huth is clearly in favour once again and back as a key figure in the Stoke unit.

The same can be said for Matt Ehterington, who earned the assist for Peter Crouch’s winner – arriving off the back of his two goals in the win over Spurs in gameweek 15. The winger has earned back-to-back bonus point maximums as a result. Crouch himself has also come to the fore, with two goals and an assist, coupled with five bonus points, arriving in Stoke’s four-match streak.

All three must now be considerations, alongside this season’s big Fantasy success story – Jon Walters. In comparison, Walters has taken a back seat of late, earning just a couple of assists in Stoke’s winning run.

With games against Villa, Wigan and Blackburn to come in consecutive gameweeks, once the trip to City is disposed of, Stoke’s assets look well worthy of further consideration.

The Talking Point

Unexpected injuries to a couple of prime Fantasy assets tested the strength of many a manager’s bench over the weekend. Both Gareth Bale and Ryan Taylor picked up knocks in training last Friday but neither Harry Redknapp or Alan Pardew mentioned these respective this in the pre-weekend press conferences.

With the games coming thick and fast, recovery time is at a minimum and managers are rightly reluctant to take risks with their players’ fitness. Only this afternoon we heard the news that Jamie O’Hara is out of Wolves’ game with Norwich tomorrow night, meaning he has missed home clashes with both Stoke and the Canaries- both were potentially profitable encounters for his Fantasy owners.

Ryan Taylor’s 35% Fantasy owners will be anxiously awaiting any update tomorrow – with Newcastle not playing until Wednesday, though, and Gameweek 17’s deadline at 7.30 tomorrow evening, a strong back-up choice looks essential if he misses out again. Davide Santon impressed at left-back in Taylor’s absence, picking up the 3 bonus points against Swansea and Alan Pardew knows he has an able replacement at hand if he chooses not to risk Taylor.

Bale’s 33% owners will be hoping his omission from yesterday’s win over Sunderland was merely an exercise in caution, with a huge match against Chelsea on the horizon this Thursday evening. The Welshman had played every minute of Tottenham’s season up until the game against the Black Cats, but it’s clear they lacked a cutting edge in his absence. Aaron Lennon’s hamstring injury merely adds to Redknapp’s woes and may even continue to have a knock-on effect on Rafael Van der Vaart, with the Dutchman shifted out wide right upon his withdrawal.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Oh my.... Lost ground on my mini leave leaving me 50 points behind.....

How's this looking for this week?
No transfers done as of yet..

    Vorm or Ruddy

    Kompany Jag Baines Raylor (ShawX)

Silva VDV Sessesgnon (Pilkington & Walters)

    RVP Ba Adebayor

Will prob go with RVP as captain but MIGHT try Baines to try and catch up on my mini league
Need to start taking risks as the guy at the top has a far better team tbh..

I know Pilkington isn't nailed on at the moment but might be worth holding onto my transfer?
    Only 0.5m in the bank & 1FT

    Thoughts & comments?

    Cheers

As much as this bonus point system is slated, on paper i think it is a fairly successful method of determining the best performers. For instance, here are the top 15 for the season so far:

    Rooney 410
    RVP 366
    Adebayor 357
    Silva 352
    Aguero 299
    Terry 297
    Nani 294
    VDV 285
    Ba 277
    Bale 274
    Yaya 268
    Kompany 267
    Lampard 267
    Dzeko 266
    Arteta 257

A decent list but obviously it clearly outlines, however, that the club you play for significantly determines your BP chances. For instance Rooney is well ahead but 7 BP behind RVP and poor Yaya Toure, despite being 11th on the overall list, is actually not even in the top 20 midfielders for bonus points.

Despite this impressive list though i still feel it is a system biased towards attacking players and as such misses an opportunity to reward both strong performing defenders and also holding midfielders. I guess it all comes down to whether or not you believe that old adage that goalscorers are the most important part of any team.

My thoughts exactly, the scoring system is already heavily stacked in favour of goalscorers, with this system it is even more so.

      Interesting topic.

That list definitely highlights the merits of being in a good team too though, with not a single one playing in a team outside the current top 7. I think that maybe being on the winning team contributes too much to the PPI, although you could definitely make the point that if you're on the winning team you've been a part of reaching the main target of football, winning.

I'm very slowly coming round to this new bonus system myself. I'd probably still go back to the old one if I could choose, but just tweaking this a little to next season would make it a better option than the previous system in my eyes. It's not awful.

There's 1 defender, 7 mids and 6 strikers there. They're all good, but yeah, defensive points simply are absent.

Still... low-scoring teams with a decent defence have a better chance of BP because of a lack of competition from forwards. In a way, since these defenders are extra-important for them, this is a correct allocation of BPs. In high-scoring teams the defenders have no chance unless they are attacking, but the forwards have a great chance of BP. Again this is correct as they're more important to the scoreline.

Defensive mids are screwed either way.

    Hi All,

Looking for some thoughts regarding the side below

    Krul Vorm
    Jones Enrique Shawcross Simpson DaLaet
    Silva VDV Bale Sessegnon NDyer
    Ba RVP Adebayor

2FT, 1.0m in the bank currently

    Shawcross > Jagielka
    Sessegnon > Drenthe

    Worthwhile transfers?

Main concern is the lack of bench cover (DaLaet/NDyer) if Bale fails to make the Chelsea game – is it worth a 4pt hit for another transfer, for one of either DaLaet or NDyer?

    Thoughts appreciated!

A little bit of encouraging info on Bale. The poster has an excellent record on injury/transfer info and he is suggesting Bale will be training tomorrow. Given the importance of Thursday's game I am sure Bale will play unless he breaks down in training. Unfortunately definitive news will be after the deadline.

Sorry. Forgot it is a members only forum. Post copied below.

      Bale and JD.
Bale should be ok, sprained ankle- nothing serious, should be fit for Tuesday training. Defoe also should be ok, Physio's working on both players to have them back for Thursday. Give you all a better idea on Wednesday when we see how they have reacted to treatment. Lennon having a scan this morning, no point in speculating until the scan results are in, hopefully at best just a small tear- which is 3 weeks or so.

no, its drugs in general, all kinds, including alcohol, i did it for 8 years and this year ended in a total breakdown, loss of self, depersonalisation (which is horrific might i add), and total shut down of emotion. not saying this will happen to everyone, but it eventually gets everyone, no matter how safe that person thinks he/she is.

Not looking forward to the FPL cup. It really did not go well for me last year.

I went out to a guy that took a TWENTY FOUR point hit

Should I read much into this terry injury scare? With no luiz, makeshift defense?

No Luiz means they are more likely to keep a clean sheet. He certainly has a knack for terrible defending!

He'll be ok. Fantasy-wise, I hope Bale starts as he will tear Bosingwa apart
