With the games coming thick and fast over the Christmas period, we’re covering the next three gameweeks in a Differentials ‘Christmas special’.

While a Robin Van Persie goal is about a predictable as sprouts for dinner at this time, there’s something slightly more magical about picking a player that no one else has, and seeing them bring home the points. With the January wildcard available from gameweek 21, there’s never been a better time to take a punt on a ‘Differential’. So go on, take a risk or two. If it goes wrong, you can always blame it on the sherry…..

Leon Osman

Leon Osman’s goal against Swansea was his second in two games, and with maximum bonus in both matches he has been a huge differential for the 1.5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers that currently own the versatile midfielder. Royston Drenthe may be the most eye-catching option in the Everton midfield, but with doubts over his fitness making him a rotation risk, Osman is the smart choice. The dimunative midfielder has been one of Everton’s key players in the last 12 months and, barring injury, he looks about as rotation proof as anyone right now.

Key to his recent upturn in form has been David Moyes’ decision to play him “in the hole” behind Louis Saha, a position he revelled in during the latter part of last season. With Tim Cahill struggling for form and fitness, it seems he could now be in for a run of games in this role, which makes him a very interesting prospect considering Everton’s upcoming fixtures. A trip to Sunderland and West Brom is followed by that double gameweek in week 20, and at just 6.7m he could be a great investment.

Kieran Richardson

Sunderland’s 3-2 win over QPR on Wednesday was only the second time this season they’ve scored 3 or more goals in a game, and Martin O’Neill’s arrival seems to have had a positive impact on several of Sunderland’s attacking players. Kieran Richardson may have been moved back to the left-wing after a run of games in the centre, but he still picked up two assists at QPR and along with Stephane Sessegnon, he looks a decent budget pick over the medium term.

Sunderland’s next two games against Everton and Man City aren’t the easiest, but with both fixtures at home they will still expect a couple of goals, and the trip to Wigan also offers potential for Richardson get amongst the points. With rotation rife at this time of year, the fact that Richardson has started every game since week four makes him a decent option as a fifth midfielder. Priced at just 5.8 and an ownership of 0.8%, he could also prove to be a handy differential.

Peter Odemwingie

After his bizarre falling out with manager Roy Hodgson last month, the injury problems that had plagued Odemwingie earlier in the season appear to have mysteriously disappeared: it seems the consistent form from last term has returned. Odemwingie has been hugely influential in recent games, and with four goals and three assists in as many matches, including that stunning solo goal against Blackburn, paying that extra 1.5 over team-mate Shane Long looks well worth it right now.

As one of the standout performers from last season, Odemwingie is capable of scoring against anyone and the prospect of facing Man City, Everton and Tottenham over the next three gameweeks, shouldn’t worry him too much. Few will have expected returns against Newcastle last time out, but Odemwingie fetched a goal and an assist in the Baggies’ 3-2 win. With Demba Ba available for a similar price, Odemwingie has been mostly overlooked, but with Newcastle’s fixtures tightening up and Ba off to the African Cup of Nations in a couple of weeks, Odemwingie could be an ideal swap to carry you into the New Year.

      Some options:

      - Jones -> Evans to free up 2 mill
      - Ba -> Studge
      - Walters/Larsson needs to be Bale. How are you planning to acc him?

        Thanks for the answer mate.

        - I considered Jones -> Evans but considering Jones is alright i dont think i will as he has better security and a higher potential to score more than Evans playing oop sometimes.
        - I am planning on Ba -> Sturridge before the African Cup of Nations so might hold till then
        - I agree but both Walters and Larsson have good fixtures and I am unsure how to fit Bale in. What do you suggest??

          "Jones is alright"

          😕 He's scored one goal in two seasons! Get rid, man 😡

          Studge has the better fix over Ba and plays for, argubly, the better team.

          Bale? Jones!

            I meant alright in terms of injury. Jones is making money and playing oop. He may have only scored 1 in 2 seasons but he hasn't been in the team for the majority of that time. Recently he has scored and came so close against blackburn. Ba is coming off a double and his fixtures are good. I will definately do the transfer soon just don't see the point now. Maybe in a few weeks i'll get bale when walters or larssons fixs get tougher

              You're not in the game to make money though. The game is decided on points not the most expensive team.

              If you pick the right players, team value will take care of itself.

              Evidence speaks volumes and the bare reality is that Jones might be an OOP but he still has to justify his place in your team. The evidence for now suggests that Jones isn't quite the scoring bonanza ppl make him out to be. He might have the potential but until he delivers the goods, Evans will do the same job for 2 mill less.

              If Rooney goes beserk tomorrow, how are you going to get him in? A cheaper defender gives you this flexibilty to improve your team without significantly weakening it.

                When Vidic Ferdinand and the likes come back where will that leave Evans?? I can see the reason to do it for say the next couple of weeks but after that then what?? Jones' job security is a lot better in my opinion. If Jones has scored or something in that time his price will have risen to say 7+ when I bought him for 6 and hence will have to fork out extra to get some mu coverage in defence back. With RVP and a ade dgw coming up i would just have to leave him. A jones-> evans is not going to free up enough for Walters/Larsson -> Bale as well as an upgrade to roon

                  Vidic is out for the season. Evans played the first 7 weeks when Vidic was out.

                  Even if Evans doesn't play, there are plenty of cheap defenders to do what Jones does.

                  See my team for ideas.

      - PJ could be Evans so that Morrison is upgraded
      - Ruddy needs an upgrade
      - Wilkinson has gametime doubts
      - Drenthe, best monitored first before getting in as we need to see his fitness levels and his ability to play consecutive games

        A: Unfortunately, we cannot link your history from an old account to a new one. If you have set up a team for this season using a different email address, you will not be able to view your History from previous seasons on that account. You need to look at the bigger picture. If you are some way behind the leaders, then this should have some bearing on your decision.

      Roughly, if you are 120 pts or more behind the no 1 player in the game, then you cap'n Rooney.

      If you are within 120 pts of the leader, play safe and cap'n RVP.

      Good luck!

      Only question marks for mine are Wilko and Welbeck. Will Wilko def start? Not sure how involved Welbeck will be, though a nice enough cheap link into the United attack I suppose.

      Would probably have Pilko first sub - could get something against Spurs defence.

      7/10 Set up for the fixtures nicely. Your problem is the non-players and the lack of TOT forcing future hits.

    Is it worth saving my trade this week and do the two next week to get Sturridge in for Yakubu (not enough funds to do it now?

        Yeah - thinking similarly as far as getting the funds:

        Jones->Evans
        or
        Baines-> Jagielka
        or
        Baines->Evans

        Then use the funds for either:

        Pilkington/Dyer->Bale
        or
        Yakubu->Sturridge

            Defenders are never worth a hit and Jones is a good player to have in any side. A punt on Mata could be an option but I would do it over 2 weeks to save the hit. I would consider saving a transfer it its too hard

                assuming the united defenders will get you clean sheets, nani would have a hard time making up 10 points (or more if it is Jones)

                I think I would do something about jarvis and dyer, but keep the united defenders, and see if rooney could do something

                i can see how you have a dilemma though

              I dont know, personally dont believe the defender rule. You are really taking the hit to get nani. If Nani does well, he could rise even more and price you out of that move as well. I dont know how you can go into a GW with a midfield looking like that 😀
              I would take hits front and back to fix it.

      Definitely too much invested in defence, it's killing your midfield.

      Downgrade either Jones or Smalling, possibly Richards too. Get some Swansea into your defenders, Shotton from Stoke is also a good shout.

      Use what you save to get Nani into the team.

          Take Jones out and get Nani in. Maybe Shotton in as the defender(get a 4 mil for sure, you have too much in defense)

          Second option which would also be ok would be to get, Drenthe and Walters/Larsson for Jarvis and Moses/Dyer

            You should be able to make that second option with your 2,5 over. Its a risk now, not having Nani- but the you cant have all the good players anyway. This would allow you to have an overall good team until the Jan Wildcard and having double united CS potential is not too bad if you ask me as an alternative to Nani.

          depends what price you bought him at too. If he was bought for 4m then it makes no difference. Its a hard one I must say

    I've made a move from the recognized midfield set up of "having one cheap player" this week and gone with 8 up front:

    Vorm
    Evans, Shotton, Enrique
    Silva, Nani, Bale, Walters
    Ba, Adebayor, RVP

    Ramsey, Jagielka, Simpson, Krul.

    It's a kinda pre wildcard gamble.....You likey?

      did so myself to be honest... i was thinking how the heavy christmas rotation demands more from the subs

      you should get rid of ramsey though 🙂

      It's a very solid team. I went for Drenthe ahead of Walters but that's just a personal preference, can't argue with his OOP status or pens

    RMT please.

    Vorm
    Jones, Evans, Enrique
    Walters, Drenthe, Nani, Silva
    Ba, Adebayor, RVP

    Subs: Krul, Gower, Brown, Simpson

    I have 0.3 in the bank. Also had two free transfers this week, already used one, any need to use the other one this week?

    Unsure of what midfield setup to go with...

    Thinking Walters Nani (C) Bale Sinclair (Larsson)

    Would anyone do anything different?

            7 shots on target? He'll score a hatrick if that's the case, Ruddy is useless

              he had 10 shots on target vs WBA a couple of GWs ago.. only got him 2 goals, and 1 of them was his rebounded penalty

              I recall someone mentioning premiership record

          true. i suppose also it would help you keep his price down in time for gw 20 9if you'd want him in by then)

        I seem to remember us keeping our first clean sheet away at Arsenal last season, wonder if history might repeat itself? Highly unlikley! 5-1 probably...

      Norwich have only conceded 1.5 gpg at home so far, but I think this average is about to go up and have backed Spurs @ 5-6 quite heavily.

      If you've got Samba you're never playing him for cleansheets, you're banking on goal/assist potential, so he really has to play every week IMO.
